Much better than I was expecting, given its age - but not until the second glass. Initial pour was exactly what I was expecting - big fruit, some torrefaction, wafting honey and pineapple on the nose, etc.; palate was, initially, just as uninteresting. I was drinking this next to a 2004 Breze from the Loire (f'n brilliant), so this was, I thought, completely doomed, banished to the shadows. But, as this bottle still had an excellent color and fill, it was like the racehorse that came from far behind on the final stretch; it didn't overtake the Breze, but it put up a good fight, offering more depth and freshness to the fruit, and even some minerals that were not at all apparent on first pour. It was a a solid pairing with butter poached lobster, corn bellini, crispy potatoes, and osetra caviar. The 14,8% abv was fairly well integrated at this point in its life cycle. A good surprise; thankful for its vg condition. Still has some years, but I see no reason to wait. recommended
Nose: caramel, mushroom, vanilla cake, cinnamon, coconut, sugar cane, white chocolate Notes: It's been a while since I've had a Marcassin. I have always consider Marcassin Vineyard to be the second best white from the US right after The Judge. I can say Marcassin has a trade mark creamy and caramel yogurt like nose that I consider relatively distinct which makes this wine quite an attractive one and this nose I find quite consistent in its wines across different vintages. The 04 was no different. Relatively cloudy and golden, the signature nose was very attractive and drew everyone's attention. Nevertheless, the palate failed to catch up with the excellence found in the aroma. I do feel that the 04 should be slightly over its peak drinking window and is starting to go downhill now. I do not believe at this stage there will be additional benefit of holding on to this wine further and whatever inventory one has should be consumed to avoid further deterioration. Vinetasters: Northern California family-owned chardonnays and pinots (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Worryingly dark colour but this doesn't seem to show any unwarranted oxidation. Unctuous and cloying, this is a wine of absolutely no shape. It is a blob of fat. Bitter, burnt caramel sweetness, and utterly lacking in anything resembling structure. Shapeless, amorphous, and repugnant. My 9th, group's 9th.

Poured a darker amber into the glass. The nose on this wine is really not mistakeable. Delightful. Petrol dominated palate. Aged fruit, incredible depth. Toasted citrus. Oregano in the middle of this wine. Very crazy and intense wine. White pepper finish. White WOTN without question. Definitely top 2 aged Chardonnay experience for me -- the 97 Paul Hobbs Walker Station is the other.

This last bottle from my order delivered the goods. The oak has long since disappeared, all that remains is was sweet, ripe, pears, apples and flowers. The offers ampe concentration, fresh, sweet fruits and soft, elegant, full textures.

Guys Wine Night - Bring something you've been saving (Jason's House): Shared a bottle with 5 others. Even at this age, this is one of the biggest and most full-bodied chardonnays that I have had. Having said that, there is also a ton of minerality in it that tries to balance the massive fruit and oak. I found the nose to be better than the palate. It is buttery, woody and has burned marshallow on it. As I expected, it got better as it warmed up. There was some spicy ginger on the palate. Everyone else at the tasting found it to be very complex. I didn't find that, and wonder if my mouth couldn't get past how big it is. There was a small amount of alcohol on the finish, but not much. I liked this the least out of the group, as it was shockingly voted above a 1996 Insignia, 2007 Realm Dr. Crane, 2000 Plumpjack reserve and 2006 Saxum James Berry 32. For myself, it didn't make my top 3, scored 92-93.

Great Dinner at Jason's: Bring a bottle you have been saving: Golden. Great Californian oaky nose. Crystallized ginger, vanilla, creme brulee. Broad, dense and very complex with an unusually (for such a big wine) terrior driven presence. Very long finish with a zing of alcohol at the end.

This is a delicious Chardonnay, with Marcassin's signature herbal (chamomile) notes, and still-vibrant pear fruit and honeysuckle flowers, along with some wood and minerals. This is not as layered, long, or quite as seamlessly integrated as the really great Marcassin vintages (e.g. 1996, 2007) but this is still a stunning wine that is aging gracefully, developing tertiary complexity.

Took to a wine dinner. Not really a cali chard fan, but had purchased this a few years ago on reputation alone so wanted to check it out. This was a very odd style of chard to me. The nose was expressive and showed tons of smoke, chalk, lemon, vanilla. On the palate there was more of the smoke, vanilla, lemon, minerals, spice, and lots of chalk. The finish was long and there was good mouthfeel and lots of acidity as well. The color was also cloudy which was unique to me. Going Away Dinner @ Ripple (Ripple - Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.): This was the most controversial wine of the night. The nose and palate featured exaggerated tones of dense lemon oil, smokey minerals, wood smoke, and marzipan. I've had a lot of chardonnay that has featured these flavors, but never like this...I think the CT user herberto put it best when he described this as a science experiment. To me it lacked elegance.

Tooch's Goodbye Tasting (Ripple - Cleveland Park - Washington, DC): This wine was met with mixed enthusiasm by the tasting team. Thoughts about this wine are usually prefaced with: "This isn't really my style of chardonnay, but..." Yes, this chardonnay demands attention. It stands up and grabs your palate and takes it for a crazy ride. The wine is very cloudy in the glass. The aromas changed with air, and each time I smelled this wine I detected another aroma. All sorts of aromas: lemon custard, roasted peanuts, smoke, almond biscotti. Big and bold are words too weak for this wine. Flavors of pineapple upside-down cake, apricot, lemons, buttercups, etc., etc. It's extreme on the palate, but by no means overoaked. A sweet vanilla flavor lingers underneath, but it's equally matched by a dose of chalky minerals. The oily, buttery mouthfeel, combined with the acid, makes this a really intense experience. It's not white Burgundy, but it's a treat.

OK, I have to give this wine its due. I'm not really a fan of this style - this is no-holds-barred, pedal-to-the-medal super ripe Cali Chard. The intensity of fruit is amazing. Ripe, ripe ripe but not cloying. Not obviously overoaked. With this much ripeness, this could be grapes from anywhere made in a lab - not much sense of place. But boy what a delicious science project.

I was reluctant to write a note on this because my experience was different from all other reviews but I can't say that there was any clear flaw with the bottle. Color was bright gold with a slight green tinge. Nose showed lots of vanilla and toast masking some white peach. Oak tones also hid the fruit on the palate. Full bodied with a nice long finish. Its pretty massive. I just didn't get nearly as much acidity or minerality to lighten up the weighty components. Still enjoyable and I would never have guessed 14.8% alcohol.

The best California Chardonnay to share with visitors from other countries. They never see the wine in Bordeaux. They are very aware this is our benchmark Chardonnay. Deeply colored, with powerful notes of aromatics of ripe tropical fruit, vanilla, pears and floral scents. This very concentrated, fresh wine fills your palate with lush, ripe, pure fruit and ends with a long, clean, balanced finish. Everyone from Bordeaux remarked how much they liked the wine and that it did not show any heat, even with its high alcohol levels.

absolutely mind blowing wine. had a nose of lanolin, Taste was layer after layer of mineral, citrus, hazelnut, and perfectly integrated oak. Every sip was different and evolving. The nose and taste were amazing, I could have smelled it all night. The 1996 vintage of this wine was my WOTY for 2008, although the year is early, this will be tough to beat for 2009. May be two years in a row for Marcassin

Interesting nose, almost showing some premox initially, but eventually "blowing off" and showing rich, nutty, floral and fruit. The palate had a distinctive smoke element, along with butterscotch, lemon/lime, and a wet stone component. Big and rich, but not a wine for everybody. Enjoyed at the Fat Duck.

Fantastic wine. Very delicate and flavorful at the same time. My only complaint would be that the acid was a little light, but even despite that it didn't come across as flabby. Very impressive.

absolutely mind blowing wine. had a nose of lanolin, Taste was layer after layer of mineral, citrus, hazelnut, and perfectly integrated oak. Every sip was different and evolving. The nose and taste were amazing, I could have smelled it all night. The 1996 vintage of this wine was my WOTY for 2008, although the year is early, this will be tough to beat for 2009. May be two years in a row for Marcassin

Characteristic cloudiness. Potent, bright wax and citrus/nutty notes. Weighty but with a great mineral backbone and plenty of structure to support. Full bodied with great intensity. Delicious.
