The structure of the 99 is still apparent, tending to make the wine a more classical Claret. Some nice freshness remaining, notable graphite and minerality. Nice intensity.

{magnum} This PnP was in fine shape, and drank well, if slightly different across two days (I preferred day two). There's nothing terribly complex about this, but it's earthy, gentle, and elegant natured all in the framework of a medium>med+ body made it pretty irresistible when considering another glass. Lots of soil, some forest, tobacco and a pretty mixture of black and red fruits form the core. In this format, it's still got the goods/freshness I seek, and it's therefore a solid companion to food. Thank you, Corey. Easily recommended
Merry Christmas to me pt 2. Absolutely killer with standing rib roast. as expected. Not as full as the last time I had it, but nonetheless classic Saint Julien. Ripper.

Tart cherry aromatics with some herbaceous green elements, wet soil, graphite, and tobacco. Med body, med acid, med tannin. Very well balanced in the mouth and shows it’s structure on the finish. This should open up nicely with air. It will drink great for another 10+ years.

Last of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, as last bottle in 21, attractive, plusher but simpler than Barton 99 on same night, plateau, no rush. F (17.5).

Decanted for about 90 minutes. The bouquet was not particularly fruity - tobacco, hint of bell pepper and quite earthy. It tasted like classic left bank bordeaux; a tad austere and not a lot freshness but still very enjoyable. Everyone quite linked it.

Bordeaux WIMPS #166 30th June 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): This is showing well. Have quite a few 1999s for sentimental reasons and they have been a mixed bag. This has some fine red fruits with a contrasting and very pleasant nettle / green bell pepper note. With some air jus the suggestion of a couple of pipette drops of tangerine oil. Palate is youthful with resolving if not fully resolved tannins. Just a spot of ginger adds to the mix. Very enjoyable.

Slightly cloudy medium crimson-ruby. Strong cola notes on the nose with a bit of raspberry and alcohol. Absolutely delicious wine with a fruit bowl of flavors such as plum, nectarine skin, raspberries, lingonberries, and cola nuts. Perfectly integrated and delicious.

Aged Bordeaux Lunch at SSG. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl 1855. Appearance is not clear with fine sediment, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of leather, integrated toast oak, dark licorice, muddy earth, dark currants. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), chewy high tannins, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of dark minerals, sweet leather, ripe dark currants, tobacco, dark licorice, dark spice. Long finish. Good quality. Fruit quality here not particularly strong and acidity dipping. Better to drink up. Don't wait on the tannins.

Delicious, pure left bank Bordeaux. A tough comparison after the brilliant 1999 Pavie (what a surprise that wine was). Rally everything you can want: true cassis fruit, a touch of leather, medium body and good finish. Does not feel overdone at all - looks like they took what the vintage gave them. In fact, the middle is a touch lean. Not exciting but that’s ok. Very good wine. (91)

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of spices, toast, black fruits, black currant, cedar. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is smooth not grippy. Drank from magnum.

So this is more similar to the first bottle and very impressive. Mature ruby by color. The nose is terrific: true left bank Bordeaux - cassis, new leather - wow, the fruit really shines. Maybe a touch of mint. Palate follows - good maturity, some leather and earth. Maybe missing a bit in the middle - this keeps my rating from being higher. There is a tannic spine that emerges with air suggesting a drink now vibe before the fruit is overtaken. As good as it can be and a nice wine for Sunday dinner. (91)

Needs a couple of hours airing. Dark fruit and chocolate. Nice mid palate tannins lead to long and slightly bitter finish. No need to hold any longer. Lovely wine!

Surprisingly fresh and still with a lot of life left. Medium+ tannins and acidity, which is well integrated. It delivers blackberries, forrest strawberries, lots of black currant, a less pronounced tone of clay and some dark chocolate. The general balance is very good and the aftertaste long and pleasant. A solid 93.

Gareth's Magnum Dinner, part 2 (Noize): Magnum. Really dark and youthful - liquid graphite, with cedar and bitterness. Good acidity and a nice welterweight feel on the palate made it extremely refreshing despite the relatively uncompromising flavour profile. Went beautifully with the slightly sweet mac n' cheese it was served with. Mmm...

Alas I’ve left this wine too late for my palate. I had this wine a few years back and it was stunning which is why I left my final case thinking it might improve further. For me it hasn’t. The nose is still there but the body has gone slightly stewed and lost its energy. We opened a 2nd bottle thinking it might be slightly corked but it was a similar experience. Perfectly drinkable but, for my taste this is past it’s peak.
Good stuff. Still plenty of life left. Needs at least a couple hours breathing to blow off the tannin. Then gives way to soft nicely integrated. Not a whole lot of structure. Nice but not great.

11th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, previous bottles last in 14 VG to fine - mature but not old transparent garnet; usual medoc profile with strong liquorice element, attractive if not particularly complex or special; medium bodied, ok length, not particularly persistent or concentrated, bit underpowered and sense of fading fruit, quite silky, no upside but no real rush. Just F (17.5).

Opaque garnet purple. Nose of currant, plum blossom, cedar, blackberry, earth. Compact but expressive layers of black currant, graphite, glossy leather, and hints of tobacco on the palate. Firm tannin and surprisingly bright acidity. Moderately long finish of dark plum fruit, iodine, and gravelly grip. Lovely wine showing well but young at this juncture.

A classic, the vintage is in a perfect place now, plum, graphite, ink and stable, cigar, leather, clove, the palate kicks in with quite present but just enough tannins, leather, minerals, acidity is there, finish with a touch of graphite and hint of cassie all in balance

Lite mindre riktigt bra, men aldrig dålig. Det här är absolut på plussidan.
Drack till varsamt pannstekt smöröst innanlår från kronhjort.
Jag är på 93-94 med fortsatt möjlig utveckling.

Dinner with the wine group (Hillside Supper Club): Medium ruby, slight bricking appropriate for its age; minerally, red fruit, forest floor; palate is medium-full bodied, tannins still present but plush, good medium-plus acid, fresh, approachable but not fully mature yet. 92 with a decade ahead of it. Day 2: smooth, balanced, fully integrated tannins. A solid Bordeaux, modern styled for a left bank but very balanced. 92

Super Seconds and the Like (Capitalle Grille, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. Splash double decanted and recorked 12 hours before serving. Drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. This got a little lost in the shuffle of a fast moving train of wines. Some thought this more modern, but I I thought it was really good, sneaky good in fact. Sultry, tart cassis and dark berries, good minerality and an earthy perfume. 92(+)pts.

A fun Poyferre from our recent Capital Grill BDX dinner. My takeaway on this wine is it would have excelled much more in our minds and palates had it not been drank along side the '55,'70 and '89 Ducru and the 83 Montrose. Tonight it came across as youthfully fruity and rich and not ready for prime time. It also reminded me that the style of the producer might lean a bit modern and not totally in my wheelhouse. Tonight 91/92pts but perhaps on its own or with some aged CA Cabs present this scores a point or 2 higher for my palate. A perfectly delightful BDX overshadowed by the more classically styled heavy weights present tonight.

Decanted about 1 hour and consumed over two hours. Deep garnet-red color with moderate browning. The nose was classic St. Julien with nicely balanced and moderately complex aromas of cedar, tea, tobacco, and plums. Moderately rich though starting to dry out on the palate. The tannins seem completely resolved and the fruit is starting to fade but this is still a very nice drink. Purchased on release and stored in my cellar since.

Lovely deep ruby with a pink rim. Maturing. Sweet black currant fruit with sexy notes of earth and musk. Maybe a touch of anise. This wine is at its peak. The structure is resolved, the feel is rich and the palate is decently long. Lacks some depth and complexity but this is a fun mouthful of Claret. I feel the critics underrated this wine. (92)

I love the rusticity of this wine that gives it another dimension. Great earthy, funkiness. I probably would not have guessed this to be a St. Julien in a blind tasting, but I enjoyed it just as much knowing that there used to be producers that made wine like this.

At 20 years of age, this is still going strong. It still possesses the charm that elevates it to one of the more enjoyable wines from the vintage. Lots of dark and red fruits, barnyard, tobacco, and espresso. Nicely structured, and should provide some nice longevity. Sweet earthy fruit on the palate. Still at its peak; can hold or drink now.

Up its game by a notch! A more expressive and grander displaying, the quality of the red fruits in here is simply outstanding, not in scale but the depth, more vivid and very lively, along with a touch of minerals, beautifully crafted! I simply enjoyed every mouthful!

Needed 2 hours open to come around. Nose: barnyard and that distinctive aged Bordeaux sois bois nose that I love. Leather and some dark fruit notes still hanging in there. palate: smooth, a little tannic dryness on the mid-palate but transitions nicely to some dark fruit, earth and a long interesting and nice finish. Served with prime NY steaks and the match was damn near perfect. Would buy again.
Further note - vacuum sealed and put 1/3 in fridge and forgot it until the 4th (3 days open). It was at it's best. Richer, smoother and much more complex and complete.

Wraysbury Dinner (R/Y/B/A) (Home): Double decanted 3 hours. Deep ruby. Lovely nose, classic St J, cedar and cigar box with ripe blackcurrant fruit. More depth here, and density, than a bottle at the 99 horizontal in May. A generosity here. Lovely balance. A very solid **** indeed. Plenty of legs left in this.

Pop and pour - This baby didn’t get decanted, just swirls in the glass (Bordeaux Somm. Riedel) ehich was enough to open this beauty up.
The first black berries (cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry etc.) then it moved on to red berries and some delicious aged hanged meat (that A4 graded Wagyu sweetness) with ever so fairly notes of tobacco and cedar. The iodine/medicinal notes were not yet developed.
This still has years to go, but has reached it maturity window now.

Wow, my last bottle was flawed/corked. But this one shinned! Drinking really nice as a pop and pour, it opened up over an hour and got even better. Smooth, with no hard edges, but just enough tannic grip to balance out the fruit. A great nose and a long finish.

Still going strong! All I can say is, to me personally, this is what a genuine bottle of claret is all about, you have a fine-polished mineral palate along with substantial amount of red fruits, fragrant nose, it is simply irresistible, still a long life ahead! Clear purple. Fragrant nose of smoke and cedar. Silky palate with medium weight and a relatively austere finish. A delicious unpretentious claret which pairs beautifully with food. One of the reasons I love Bordeaux - even a mediocre vintage can still deliver so much pleasure.

Pnp and drank over 3h. Dark garnet with translucent rim. Nice nose with dark fruit and forest floor, on the palate medium bodied, the fruit is still fairly juicy but cannot entirely stand up to the plentitude of wood spices, earth and tobacco. Fine to medium tannins. Very nice and drink now, nevertheless the Langoa Barton is the better St Julien in this vintage

Not had a corked wine for some time but this clearly was. Drinkable but not much fun. Fairly dark garnet with translucent rim. Beneath the cork taste, there seemed to be a nice, traditional claret. Tannins are fine and almost entirely resolved. Seemed around 89-91, for once the Poyferre does not seem to reach the quality of the exceptionally good Langoa Barton in the 1999 vintage. Need to try the 99 Leoville Barton.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ My place Bordeaux): Drank over two days. In the bouquet dark forest fruits like cassis and blackberries, cedar, smoke and some graphite. Same on the palate. A slightly sweet start. Luxurious oak, beautiful acidity and round, still powerful tannin. This was my last bottle and in fact that is a pity, because although this wine is mature, I think its absolute peak will be reached in a year or two if you have a properly stored bottle. Beautiful wine which holds the middle between classical and modern made. Enjoy between now and 2020. 91 - 92

Drank over the past few nights with aid of my coravin. Ruby color showing some age. Some cedar, some tar in the nose, but overwhelming aromas of tobacco and coffee dominate. Still a bit of dark fruit here, but lots of lead pencil, cedar, forest floor and coffee on the palate. A very pleasant wine, and unmistakably bordeaux, but nothing particularly overwhelming. A better bottle overall than the wan 1998, but still not a particularly memorable bottle. I'd drink this sooner than later.

I purchased this en primeur, so perhaps my judgement isn't clouded by lingering doubts of value for money. And anyway, it was a long time ago that Cru Classé Bdx provided value for money, if we're being honest. OK, down to business: garnet colour, early stages of bricking, medium concentration. Textbook Claret nose: cypresses, hot earth, cedar, decaying blackcurrant fruit, barnyard. Medium bodied on the palate, good fruit, still, some tannin left, good acidity. Long finish, cigar box, cedar trees, smoke and hot earth. Great. This wine is by no means exuberatingly flamboyant but it certainly gained in posture and poise during the course of the night. It's outstanding, without question, and not because it brings heavy caliber guns to the table but because it slowly wins you over, with balance and smooth persuasion. Tasted against a more expensive top drawer Rioja from a much better vintage and this chappie didn't blink an eye. Drink now

I felt that this bottle fell a little short of my expectations, especially given how much I generally regard this producer. Most aspects of this wine were just medium - the nose, the finish, the mouthfeel and the development. There was generally a sense at the table that it was an unmistakeable Bordeaux (which I view as a great thing) with some nice road tar, pencil shavings and cedar and the wine was well integrated, about what you'd expect from this vintage 15 years on. I would look to add this wine only if it were offered at an appealing price, otherwise drink up.

Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose shows ripe blackcurrant, cedar, touch of earth and vanilla. Medium/full bodied, cedary blackcurrant fruit, generous and rich but with sumptuous balancing acidity, soft tannins just showing a trace on the good length finish. Excellent, drinking well but should be fine for some time - to at least 2020.

Traditional Bordeaux as far as I'm concerned, wouldn't fool anybody in a blind tasting. Drinking very nicely right now, integrated tannins (but still present), good balance with acidity, nice classic aroma profile, good length. There's pleasure in drinking this.

This deep garnet wine (purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion) was double-decanted, allowing approximately three hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. The wine was then presented to our Friday tasting group in double-blind fashion. My taste was unblinded. The nose continues to show attractive aromas of black cherries, Asian spices, cocoa and cigar box. On the palate, it is fresh, medium bodied, has medium sweet tannins and provides a silky mouth texture. The flavors mirror the nose and the alcohol (listed as 13%) is seamless. Solid in the middle and medium-to-long on the finish, this '99 is definitely in its "sweet spot." Assuming well-cellared, it should be enjoyable for several more years. Drink now-2020.

This classic Saint Julien pours a rusty maroon color with quite a bit of bricking orange on the rim. Thick long legs cling onto the huge Riedel Overture stems. Rather closed on the nose initially but progressed throughout the entire night. Prominent notes of wet earth, mushrooms, cassis, pencil shavings, red fruits and a tinge of smokiness populate the nose. This wine is a bit green, though it shows much promise towards the opulent, classic Bordeaux style. A bit thin on the palate, though the wine is very fleshy and chewy, thanks to the nice balance of merlot in the juice. Leather, tobacco and smoke are prominent before big red juciy fruits kick in with finesse. There is only slight acidity in the end. Tannins are supple and well integrated but the astringency is still there. This will undoubtedly be a gem of a wine in a couple more years. Too bad it's my last bottle!

Too young. Over several hours of decantining tannins would not stop strangling the fruit. There is a supple, soft wine under there, and you can start tadting it just before your tongue curls up. Give it at least a couple more years.

I thought I had none left, then found a remaining bottle. Like the last one I tried, this is full of jammified blueberry, spicy cassis and plum flavours. Made in a very sweet and hedonistic style, this needs to be drunk at a cool temperature, no more than 19°, otherwise (as I found out) the sweetness becomes cloying - I stuck mine in the fridge to great effect. Behind all the cutey-pie fruit, there is great elegance, but not enough grip or body to really hope for much future development. Giving lots of pleasure now, so there's no point in hanging on to any, although it should keep for another year or two. I enjoyed it, but...it's a bit over the top, the opulence needs a drier finish. Oddly enough Moulin Riche is actually better than LP in this vintage to my taste.

This deep red/garnet wine (purchased upon release) was double-decanted, allowing two hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. The sediment is moderately heavy at this stage. The wine was then taken to a walk-around wine and food party. The nose shows beautiful aromas of kirsch, Asian spices, cocoa and cigar box. Medium-to-full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, medium sweet tannins, well-integrated alcohol (listed as 13%) and a silky mouth texture. The flavors mirror the nose and the middle palate is solid. Long, smooth finish. This is a '99 which is drinking extremely well at the present time. Assuming well-cellared, it has the stuffing to provide pleasure for another 5-7 years. Drink now-12/19.

Deep color, with no fading at the edge. The nose is fairly intense, displaying dark fruits, earth, cedar, and a slight floral component. Bordeaux Night - 10 years and Older (Zeffir, Dunlop Street): A good wine, if a bit untypical. I picked it out as a 1999 left-bank, but guessed a Pauillac given its surprising power and rather thickset nature. It ceratinaly had a rich nose, perhaps more so than all the otehr reds on show, with a warm depth of dark cassis and black cherry aromas wed to notes of leather and earth, and bits of roasty, toasty, slightly prickly wood spice. A bit in your face, but it was complex and rather attractive nonetheless. The same could be said of the palate too. It had surprising power and depth for a 1999 St Julien, showing slightly bretty animale and leather notes on the attack, before a rush of dark fruit, led by authoritatively ripe cassis flavours, filled the mouth alongside pats of wet earth and a bit of spicy heat pulling into the midpalate. There was lots of warm depth here. Past that, there a hint of roasted capsicum emerged just before a long, powerful finish set in with earth and tobacco, exotic spice notes filling the back-palate. While somewhat mellow, there where still fine tannins giving the wine a sense of structure. Big, powerful, maybe lacking a little cut and focus due to slightly lower acidity, but this was certainly not rustic or clumsy. Indeed, there was even a sense of finesse behind all its size. I am not sure how much the wine will improve from here on, but it was a pretty good even as it is.

The last of my stash, much better than the last two I've tasted, full of lively blackcurrants and blueberry flavours, with the usual touch of cherry and spices. Nice finish, but this is just on the edge, it needs drinking up over the next couple of years.

Decanted 1 hour. Gobs of fruit on the nose and palate. Earthy and fruity in the middle with some silky tannins filling the mouth. A long bright finish.

Decanted for 1 hr. Had it with duck breast, good combination. Great color and fine balanced nose, both still very young. On palate this had softened (just from memory) quite a bit. Medium bodied. Good fruit, typical bordeaux tannins and earth. Will not get much better. Perfect drink now as i am finding out for all 99s.

Decanted roughly one hour. Virtually opaque balck-garnet color with only hints of brown at the rim. Dense, brooding nose of blood, cassis, earth, tobacco and cedar. Full and densely fruity on the palate as well, though the tannins have all but faded away. This is all about power and muscle whereas the '99 Ducru that accompanied it was elegant by comparison. Lovely wine but slightly outclassed by the Ducru. Took from my cellar to Rabbit Bistro in Eugene, OR.

From 750. Deep robe, mature disc. A little rancio at first, but thankfully this blew off a little bit. A flawed bottle? Cork was pristine. Showed nice cassis, leather, menthol and chocolate. Medium body, med-high acidity and pretty firm tannins. A lot of the aspects on the nose carry through to the palate making for a pretty complete 99.
A little more lush than the las Cases and far more ready than the backward Barton. Would be worth trying a second bottle, I think.
4/5

This was opened 2 hours before service. Nose had tart cranberry, some spicy oak and mocha. The palate was modern with bright fruit, charred wood and coffee. Didn't have the classic Bordeaux characteristics I'm looking for, but was a nice pairing with a grilled flank steak.

Outstanding - fine Bordeaux. Pure currant, blackberry, and even some black cherry. Long finish goes on and on. Drinking very well right now and doesn't need much time after opening.

At age 12, this is tasting mature with its tobacco, mushroom and earthy, cassis and cranberry driven personality. Medium bodied, this lighter style of St, Julien will offer the most pleasure over the next 5-7 years.

Much more subdued than our last tasting where we suspected this was a Napa mountain cab. We certainly tasted the black fruits, but this one had a lot of red fruit as well. Tannins very integrated. We decanted this for an hour, rebottled, and took to a local BYOB French Cafe. Excellent.

Pop and pour. The nose was closed at first, but soon began to show cassis, graphite, a bit of sour cherry, saddle leather, and some light coffee. The palate was a bit soft and didn't have much in the mid-palate for me. It did have nice underbrush, leather, graphite, cassis and mushroom flavors integrated nicely together.

At Nancy's at Christmas. Color is deep and rich. Lovely perfume, more like a Margaux with it's violet femininity. Really gorgeous. Lovely fruit on the palate, silky yet rich. Earthy. Nice balance; harmonious. Very long finish. Excellent wine all the way around. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.

Purple hue. Nose of cedar, pencil lead, black currant, leather, licorice. Big fruit and big tannins on the palate, muscular and tight, with notes of blackberry, black currant, earth, tobacco, and a hint of green pepper. Moderate finish with minerals and structure. Needs lots of time.

Opened 3 hours before dinner and decanted just before serving. If this was a blind tasting I would have guessed a Napa mountain Cab as it is loaded with black fruits. Still loads of tannins (though very well integrated) so we suspect this bottle has many years left in it.

A bit of spice and very classic mineral, dust, fruit. Palate is balanced, great backbone, lovely red fruits. Nice finish that lasts a while. Excellent. Just as good as the barton, but with a different emphasis to the flavor profile (light balanced vs. chewy delicious).

Popped and poured. Nice, mature garnet red color with little fading. Classic (to me) St. Julien nose of cassis, tobacco, loam amd kirsch. Mature as well on the palate with much of the tannin now resolved and ample fruit remaining. A tad hollow in the middle but otherwise very, very good. Paired well with roast pork loin.

Very clean and almost polished in style. Elegant, in fact this bottle was like a left bank Bordeaux in shorts, little less of everything compared to bigger vintages. Good balance. Like other 99's this is perfect to drink now and I really don't see it improving much from here. Decant one hour, not more.

Very good mature and open nose of cedar and black currant. Excellent grip supplied by mature tannins. Full bodied and silky mouthfeel. Better than expected, and better than 1999 Lynch Bages tasted in parallell. This last bottle out of 12 is actually the best of the bunch...should have kept them longer!

Always a reliable wine to me. Leoville Poyferre does deliver every single time. Dark ruby in color, nose of very rich dark fruits plus a touch cherry liquior, very smooth on the palate, a touch of tartness, and the finish is a bit short, but overall a remarkable wine. Bravo to the wine-making team. Can hold for a number of years in a cold cellar.

Had as BYO wine at The Inn @ West End. Kindly opened and decanted by Gerry the proprietor.
The first whiff gave a lovely note of blackcurrant, with classic cedar. On the palate I again detected a slightly 'woody note', like the smell you get from some corks of freshly opened bottles, different from classic cedar, more matchstick in nature; I've had a couple of Langoa Barton, also 1999s, displaying this same quality [comments appreciated].
I felt the wine was subdued, but given time, and the arrival of my main dish of lamb and potatoes Dauphinoise, it finally came into its own. A lovely finish of blackcurrant and graphite complemented the meat. Not complex but pure, elegant and concentrated with a good length.
The tannins soften nicely after an hour or so.

After the Lafon Rochet was finished, I figured I'd open a bottle of this 1999 Leoville Poyferre as it has been one of my go-to, ready to drink Bordeaux wines. And although this was a good bottle, it was nowhere as interesting as the Lafon Rochet that preceded it. The fruit was ample enough and so was everything else (acidity, tannins), but for the first time, I thought the flavors were muddles and un-distinctive. I would have liked some more focus from the fruit I also wonder if the tannins are beginning to dry out ever so slightly. This was my last bottle, so I no longer have a dog in this race, but if I still owned any of this, I would try to drink up in the next year or two.

Decanted for about 30 mins. Deep garnet color with lots of cassis, cedar and some pencil shavings on the nose. Medium to full body with nice balance. A touch of earthiness and lots of fruit on the palate. Medium length finish. I believe this wine is just starting to come into it's prime drinking window. Matched very well with Filet Mignon.

An outstanding wine. Well integrated after 2 hrs in the decanter. Pure, fresh fruit is still there; this wine could remain in the cellar for a while. No hurry to pull the cork on this one; but don't hesitate, either. Smooth and unflawed. Classic.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #039; Bordeaux GCC 2nd wines (By BS): Beautiful and complex bouquet. Very juicy black berries, mainly cassis. Coffee. Friendly soft and round tannin. This bottle seemed to be more ready than the one I had earlier this year. Other source, so storage temperature might play a role here. Definitely a complex, friendly and very enjoyable wine. Nevertheless blind exactly the same score.

I'm declining to rate this bc I have doubts about its provenance (end of bin special - potential heat damage). It came across as flat and tired - little fruit and the finish, although lengthy, was flavorless and one-dimensional.

A very solid wine. The amount of fruit did fade a bit, but Oh Lord, the nose is just very pleasant, very classy nose, on the palate, a bit thick, a bit tannic! In a cold cellar, at least a good 5 years to evolve(given the amount of tannins on my palate) 10 years to go is no surprise to me! But of course, you can enjoy these baby now, it's your choice. Enjoy

Had this last night with cast iron seared filet, quinoa and caprese salad. Nose is pretty ripe and loaded with black currant and tobacco. Some game and funk on the nose by way of a touch of brett. Soft and medium bodied on the palate with very nice freshness. Sappy on the finish. Still has some tannins to resolve and there is ample fruit. As a matter of fact, this is ripe enough to remind me just a little of some Super Tuscan-like fruit. Incredibly good food wine that is an easy drink and very likable. Not yet at peak, but probably not more than 5 years from it. Drinking well. Purchased for $32 in 2005 and 13% alc.

Berry Bros & Rudd - Bordeaux Psyche (Berry Bros, London): Nose: lovely fruitiness, chocolate, cedar, wonderful fruit in fact. Mouth: tannin, not much fruit at all. some licorice. Not much mouth feel or length on the finish. Disappointing as so much was offered on the nose.

An easy afternoon with close friends. 2009 (@ My place): Beautiful and elegant bouquet; complex, good cassis. Medium to full bodied. A lot of cassis, some liquorice. Soft but firm tannin and good bitterness. Beautiful now when decanted a few hours before drinking. This wine will evolve for the next 3+ years.

Meesook's good bye and good luck dinner. Opened it 3 hours before serving it. I thought that 2004 Flor de Pingus would be better than this, but a half of us liked 1999 Poyferre better. It has real good balance and nice taste. Smell is not strong enough for me though (my nose did not work well because of USDA Prime beef). Anyway, we were happy and nicely drunken. What a happy dinner!

Saturday Group Kicks Off with Haut Brion: Served along-side the second bottle of 1999 Talbot as a flight, this showed more youth, with slightly riper and more blueberry-like fruit. International in style was one comment, and I can't disagree -- at least relative to the Talbot. Guesses ranged from places spanning the planet -- so, this one really can't fit into the classic camp. Nice purity of fruit and good density on the palate. The finish is a bit longer too -- but, in the end, it's a bit soulless for me. This could be interesting in a few more years, but today, I like the Talbot.

This is a fairly forward and ripe Poyferre, I'm not sure how much of that is the stylistic change since mid-90s and how much is the ripe style of the vintage. Cassis laced with espresso, little notes of cigar tobacco and lead pencil. Gets some soil/earth notes with time. Not "classic" Bordeaux, but a nice bottle of ripe Cabernet. B+

Beautiful St Julien drinking pretty good right now. Muscular nose with plenty of smoke, dark fruits (cassis), hint of violets and herbs. Full body, med tannins, velvety, I was surprised by the persistence of this Poyferre considering the vintage. Again waves of dark fruits and smoke. Lacks a little complexity. Built to last at least 10 more years. Hold or drink.

Attended a special cigar related event in Ft. Myers, FL, that weekend. Quite a few wine geeks amongst us.
Opened up this bottle once I arrived at the event. Allowed it to breathe for about an 1 1/2 hrs. Good nose showing faint hints of moss/moist peet, some minerality, & a hint of smoked meat.
I've heard that the '99 Bourdeaux were a bit light & watery, maybe why this (2nd growth?) wine was so easily accessible at this early stage . . . the wine still satisfied. Had it w/ pizza.
Wine still a bit tannic, could still go for a couple of more years in the bottle. It had decent acids. The initial flavors were predominantly woodsy/minerally w/ a hint of smoke. After 2 1/2 hrs some black fruit flavors (balckberry & blueberry) emerged.
Medium bodied. Not overly complex but overall a good balance was present. Enjoyable.
Received some good complements from several people present who also tasted it.
Liked it. Called the wine shop to have a couple of more bottles reserved.

Opened and left for 30 minutes. Fairly dark colour, still red at the edges. Forthcoming nose with ink, tar, red plums and some cassis. Attack still closed; palate somewhat disjointed, with noticeable tannins (but not harsh), acid and fruit/sweetness not fully integrated. Plenty sweetness gives this wine a friendly edge. Aftertaste shortish. Not overwhelming, but nicely balanced. Already enjoyable with food. Not great, but certainly very good.

Very dark colored but medium-bodied with some complexity in the bouquet and on the palate this is a claret that is hard not to like. Tannins present on opening suggest that it will continue to improve in the bottle but it's drinking pretty nicely already.

Saturday I was home alone, so grilled some more lamb chops and had a simple meal. Eyed the leftover Pinotage but couldn't face it, so opened the 1999 Ch. Leoville-Poyferre (St. Julien). Opens fairly quickly, with creme de cassis fruit surrounded by toasty oak and tobacco aromas. Not a really big wine, but it picks up steam over the evening. This was to my tastes the Poyferre that began the swing towards modern, but this isn't over the top. While it's modern it's not international- seems very Bordeaux to me, with earth, graphite, and cigarbox. Some have said drink up on the 1999s. but I think this will be fine for 8-10 more years, though not a wine for 2030.

Oh my lord, I found a bargain! Very St Julien, very 1999! Early drinking but can last for at least 10 years to 2016, see if I am lucky enough to taste another bottle! Ruby in color, smell of tar, red fruits, I have to say that the amount is just right, not a rich wine, for those who is look for the fruit bomb, recommend you not to choose this one! But for those who love the classy wine, here you are, don't miss it! Enjoy the drink! Cheers! ^_^

Very nice Bordeaux. Drinkable now. Opened up more quickly than I expected given its young age. Signature earthy Bordeaux aroma, but interesting sweet notes on the nose and palate - honey and lavender. Very light on acid and tannins. This wine is also an outstanding value, running $15 or so less than the '95 and '96 vintages.

Deep red color, almost black at the center. Intense nose of cedar, cloves, licorice and black currant. Complex and intriguing. On the palate however it is something of a let-down, doubtless due to this being a less-than-stellar year. It presents quite tight, with dry tannins; there is good acidity there to be sure and a medium-length finish.

Had this with flank steak from the BBQ. Decanted 2hrs before dinner and drank over three hours. Great fruit nose upon opening, dark fruit. Got better and more refined in the decanter. Lovely but still bit tight nose at dinner. Color showed some age but is still nice dark red. Fruit had gotten a bit lighter. On the palate just great. Nice fruit and backbone, certainly no "fruit juice". Not long but very nice finish that said "wine". Indeed as some have said a great wine for an "off vintage".

Tasted by the glass at Le Sommelier in Copenhagen. On the nose, an extravagant floral bouquet that made me think of a Margaux. In the mouth, good dark primary fruit of moderate concentration. Slightly disjointed today in its components, but this may round out nicely with time in the bottle. Perhaps the lack of a bit of grip in the mid-palate keeps it from being an unequivocally outstanding wine, but still impressive given the year. 89-90 points

This was my least favorite of the Bordeaux at our tasting although I still gave it a very good score. Interestingly, the 1996 Leoville Poyferre was my favorite Bordeaux. This was an earthy wine with a hint of petrol on the nose. Smooth for a young Claret. Notes of cherry but otherwise on the simple side. Short ot medium finish in comparison to the other wines on the table. Medium bodied. 88-89 points.

When I had this in October I thought the bottle was slighlty corked because I tasted nothing but oak. So, I looked forward to RobA bringing this and the 96. The '99 is a pleasant suprise. The nose is full of St. Julian cedar, rasberry, asian spices, and cigar box. While slightly tannic at first, by the end of the night it had smoothed out revealing more ripe rasberry and tobacco notes on the finish. A good sub-$25 buy.

1999 Leoville Poyferre
Lite mindre riktigt bra, men aldrig dålig. Det här är absolut på plussidan.
Drack till varsamt pannstekt smöröst innanlår från kronhjort.
Jag är på 93-94 med fortsatt möjlig utveckling.

Nice nose with dark fruit and forest floor, on the palate medium bodied, the fruit is still fairly juicy but cannot entirely stand up to the plentitude of wood spices, earth and tobacco.

A slightly sweet start. Luxurious oak, beautiful acidity and round, still powerful tannin. This was my last bottle and in fact that is a pity, because although this wine is mature, I think its absolute peak will be reached in a year or two if you have a properly stored bottle.

Dark ruby in color, nose of very rich dark fruits plus a touch cherry liquior, very smooth on the palate, a touch of tartness, and the finish is a bit short, but overall a remarkable wine. Bravo to the wine-making team. Can hold for a number of years in a cold cellar.

Leoville Poyferre 1999

Decanted for two hours. Iinitial bursting of cherry sweetness on the toungue, short finish that was somewhat harsh, but subdued some.

This is drinking great right now, and should be terrific over the next 8-10 years as well. Dark, dark cherry and black currant, with smoke and leather. A hint of licorice and cedar. Delicious.

Enjoyable claret, with clean dark fruit and some woody notes but perhaps not enough acidity to bring it all together.

1999 Château Léoville Poyferré St.-Julien
WIML85/86,WA89,WS87
Tasted double blind on February 11, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Bretty nose, not much more. Simple red cherry flavors on the palate. Could be a Frenchie but why break our streak of 1999 California CS? Pass.

An evening at Doug's: this was a touch musty/corked. but not enough to detract from the wine - just took a bit away from the fruit. still retaines some nice black fruit, medium body, spicy and with good balance, bit sweaty.

Dynamite wine. Wonderful St Julian nose, nice long finish. Blackberry and dark cherry. Some pencil lead notes. Firm tannins but not over the top. Drinking well now and no doubt will last quite a while.

Century Wine Club - August 2005 (Scarborough Wines): Deep purple on the rim with a decent shine in the glass. Black to blood red is hue. HUGE and dry. Almost sand-papery on the palette. Showing abit of age on the nose, but not overly in the palette - decent cellaring potential. Blackcurrents and blueberries. Rating Very Good.

1999 Bordeaux Tasting (Cafe Caprice, Austin TX): This was the good stuff. My Co-WOTN. Dark garnet color. Good extraction, laser focused fruit, effusive nose, and that gameyness that I just love. I need to find myself more of this.
