Great bottle, perfect cork. Pale yellow colour, no sign of oxidation. Fresh fragrant nose, crushed dried herb Sauvignon notes, lemon zest. Lemon sherbet, orange rind, and strong crushed herbal spice, a very youthful impression, but very nicely balanced. Long finish, clean acidity, refreshing and with great flavour intensity. Drinking beautifully.

Consumed late 2020 & early 2021. Admittedly waited longer than I should have. The 2005 Carbonnieux Semillon-Sauvignon blanc had lost some of its structure and complexity. It was less flavorful than it would have been in 2015 but ended up being a pleasant simple white wine and we drank all 6 bottles

Smell slightly oxidized but does blow off after awhile. Nice acidity, stone fruit, grassiness and spice. Don’t know how much longer this will hold so drink up.

Unfortunately I only had two of these. The first was undeniably corked. The second however was a brilliant surprise - golden color but crystal clear, a little musky and subdued on the nose but peach, honeysuckle, white apricot, with vanilla overtones on the palate and still a crisp acidity to clean up a long finish even after 14 years in the bottle. Wish I had some more.

I was somewhat harsh in my last note. Really for the money it has held up far better than a lot of other more expensive white Bdx I had forgotten in my cellar. No, it’s not and never was a mind-blowing wine, but it wasn’t supposed to be, either.

Golden colour. intense herbal fragrance, oak spice and lemons, oxidative richness, hints of toffee. Fleshy, medium bodied, melon and citrus fruits, well integrated oak spice, plenty of herbal zest. Quite open, the fruit is lighter now and becoming a more secondary flavoured wine. Interesting but no more than 1 glass.

Age has given this an attractive honey colour ... unfortunately it doesn't have similar depth of taste. Just okay. An inexpensive young wine that has evolved into an inexpensive old wine.

Big Bordeaux XV: Featuring '86 Mouton and Margaux (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium dark gold. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes. Lemon, beeswax, honey and lacquer on the nose is followed by similar notes on the palate, medium plus bodied, adding lemon peel, a somewhat oxidative Lopez-like character, and getting better over the half hour too. Despite this getting better, I think the smart play is to drink these over the next few years and not push it too far. A fun bonus starter from Robert that we rarely seem to drink.

Of the two bottles left, I selected the darker one, which was a gold, bordering on copper color. The cork kept its seal, as there was no apparent evidence of seepage.
The wine was oxidized in the end. I'm hoping the remaining bottle, whose color seemed to be correct, will be in good shape.

Spectacular. The nose is aromatic but straightforward. But the approach is robust and complex - baked fruit, hints of crisp citrus on the finish, which is exceptionally long. Love this. I cried to drink my last bottle! Paired amazingly with barramundi and simple accompaniments. Plenty of life left in this. Drink now or age another 5+ years.

Stunning white Bordeaux, this has improved dramatically since last seen in 2012. Still not giving a huge amount on the nose, but the palate is complex... full of baked pineapple, cut grass, hint of banana, but structured and dry. One of those wines you think will be sweet and lush, only for it to pull back into neutrality at the finish. Superb. Absolutely no hurry to drink this, easily another decade in the tank.

Medium straw, smoky, some spice, not particularly aromatic but with attractive weight, fresh contrasting acidity, showing some pleasant orangey fruit as it warms, good length finish. ***

My last (of 36). Drunk while still showing well. Gooseberry, clean melon and asparagus. Hint of green herb and green peppers. Rounded and dry finish. Will surely seek out another vintage of this superb Graves (well I am 62 and a bit old fashioned!!) Drink soon.

Blind. Bright yellow. Ripe nose almost suggests chard but obvious semillon on the palate nails it as white Bordeaux. Flavors of quince with pineapple and herbs. Great showing.

Light straw color. Tinge of green. Very polished. Undeniable semillon nose. A bit of sweet mold and singed marshmallows. Beautiful mouthfeel, with lemongrass, grapefruit and unripened pineapple layered through a light honey. Mouth-watering acidity but paired with honeyed viscosity. So glad I had one left as the wine is drinking better now than my previous bottles. Just an outstanding experience.

Rationing my wine intake and on the treadmill in preparation for Myanmar at the end of month. Coravined glass. Superb dry asparagus and firm peach flavours, splash of fresh green herb and still no sign of age. Must up my drink-by date from this year to 2018 on this showing.

From 75cl, perfect cork, P+P. Such a perfect, delicate wine we just enjoyed and didn't analyse... much. Honey and lime (blossom on the nose, juice on the entry); vivid acidity, gossamer-light bodied, but immense depth of flavour; superb architectural structure (fan vaulting, for those familiar with King's College Chapel). The antithesis of a blockbuster. Just fabulous now, so unless you are very brave, or trust Mr. Parker completely (drinking window to 2025) drink up before it starts drooping. 93P

Daughter's birthday BBQ. Strictly for the wine appreciating oldies! Showing a pronounced vanilla and capsicum aspect, the ripe melon fruit however still shone in the middle palate. Has proved and remains a crowd pleaser of highest quality, but for drinking up by the end of 2016 to enjoy at this level.

light gold colour suggests this is further along the aging curve than bottles i've seen new at retail. decanted prior to dinner at vinci in lincoln park. this took a few hours to open up, but WOW once it did. bright floral tones with honeysuckle especially prevalent. dry but with a wonderful touch of honey, deceptively sweet but not? doesn't make any sense to describe in words.. one of *those wines. seems some variation between vintages and even bottles but i'm all in after tasting this.

No detailed tasting notes taken, but this is similar to the bottle drank last Dec. This has that darker, more nuanced molasses note added to the typical SB-Sem characteristics of this wine. Went well with a cold pasta salad of vegetables, avocado, and feta. Still a few bottles of these '05s left, but will probably drink them up during the next year.

Tastes like what it is: a touch of wax and lanolin and an overall stone fruit aromatic profile from the Semillon overshadows that of the Sauv Blanc and the oak is muted and has a light touch but there are some subtle caramel notes. Hints of oxidation but not like a white Rioja. Very nice and well balanced. Long term upside.

Has really darkened in color, and had that almost sweet brown sugar aspect to it that others and I have reported previously. However, that feature was much more nuanced this time than in an earlier bottle, so it was really a big plus. If this is typical for an 8 year old Bordeaux white, I'm a fan and glad that I held some of these bottles for this development to occur.

From a half. Medium yellow-gold color (much lighter than my previous bottle); nose has citrus, waxy, some spritz, some more mature notes like caramel; palate is medium-full bodied, citrus fruit, salinity, balanced with good midpalate acidity, oak noted on my very first bottle seems to have integrated completely; finish is medium length but thins out a bit toward the end. Quite good, would buy in halves for everyday drinking. Probably best in the short-medium term (within a few years). 89-90

After my pervious experience with this wine (see tasting note from May '13), this bottle has the color and flavors that I've come to expect. I see that Honest Bob also had the "darkened" version of this wine. I should probably lower my score for that bottle (as it's not the style that I prefer), but I did find it an interesting departure from what I typically drink in a Brdx white. Had the most recent bottle with a zesty, cold pasta & vegetable salad and goat gouda, which are good pairings for this wine.

From 75cl, perfect cork. Like pinoteer's bottle (TN 13.05.2013) this was a distinct shade darker than my other remaining bottle. Bright gold. It turned out to be fully and perhaps prematurely mature; enjoyable, if not exactly vibrant. Plenty of oak, now perfectly integrated, this has the oily texture of a traditional white Rioja. Lemon, check. Pollen and honey, check. Don't get any of the tropical fruit notes other TNs have recorded. In this condition 89P.

Much darker than other bottles in my cellar. Perhaps it was a little oxidized, but the flavors and aromas were still quite pleasant. In addition to the usual lemon, it had a brown sugar or molasses flavor (not sweet). Very interesting. Still good acidity.

Recent purchase. Drunk at cellar temperature upwards. Nose of vanilla oakiness, fresh green mixed salad, coriander leaf and citrus dressing. Flavour dried apricot, pineapple with a lime/lemon zest and green capsicum backbone. Fabulous viscosity. Oak fully integrated, bone dry with great length and considerable intensity. Semillon dominates. Fine wine indeed leaving me with perhaps four years+ to enjoy my remaining 35 bottles. Excellent value for this quality.

Noticeably light on the nose. Crisp and fresh with lemon. Able to taste the Semillon coming through the chardonnay. With a pleasant absence of oak, this was a good re-introduction to Bordeaux white. Not substantial enough to partner the excellent lemon sole, but would match well with shellfish.

From a half. Color is deep orange, significantly more advanced than another half that I have. Cork appeared intact without leakage but nose is sherried; palate shows some oxidation, much more mature than previous bottles, decent acid, reduced fruit. Clearly a flawed bottle, though I can't figure out why since the cork was still intact.

Two years of bottle age and I sense the oak that others described. I'm not so experienced with white Bordeaux, so this did not detract for me as it does with so many new world whites. This has really come round in the last 18 months - excellent nose of minerals and restrained fruit. Previously the wine was a bit tarte and sharp, but now it has rounded out with the softer elements of the Semillion working well with the crisp Sauvignon Blanc elements. One of the most interesting bottles of white wine we've ever had. Had an aroma of vanilla, butterscotch, and lemon zest. It is a great way to see the difference that the aging in oak does to a white. Favors of vanilla, caramel and green apple. Ready to drink!

I have to start this with the note that i dont like strong oak flavors in my white wines. This is a nice wine but is far too oaked for my tastes. Nose: Oak notes start here. Vanilla and carmelly fruit notes. Palate: Still lots of oak notes. Decent complexity and there is some fruit under the oak. Perhaps it will integrate with more time. Acidity is decent. Nice wice but not my style, though I can see this being rated highly by others.

Pichon Baron Vertical (01, 00, 98, 95, 90, 89, 88, 86, 82, 66): This had been opened and loosely recorked prior to the tasting. I didn't catch how long it had been open but it was ready to go from the moment poured. The nose gives super ripe, tropic fruit along with a smell I linked with anise/black licorice (others had different descriptors). Regardless, it was beautiful and had me thinking ripe Loire (say Cotat) more than Bordeaux. Totally different on the palate, showing ripe fruit with good flavor intensity but really nice acidity that takes over from mid-palate through the long, lingering finish -- almost Chablis-like in its weight and cut. Analytically it seemed like two wines (ripe Loire/solid Chablis), but for me the two halves worked together seamlessly to produce a gorgeous result that paired very well with the first course (skate with white beans).

From a half. Color is deep yellow to light gold; nose has some hints of tropical fruit like pineapple, distinct waxy lanolin component, some citrus hints; palate shows good fruit, some tart lime on the midpalate, coats my tongue as if it was a bit thick but also light; finish is medium length with great cleaning acidity and hints of tropical juicy fruit like pineapple. In short, this is far better than when I tried this wine last year and is improving rapidly. It is probably still young but enjoyable now (not so enjoyable this time last year). 89-90

Great surprise; the previous bottle was oxidized & awful. This was from the same retailer & stored identically. Bottle variation from where? Crisp lemon and honeyed apple notes, wet rocks, not nearly as much oak as yesterday's Smith Haut Lafitte. All in all, a beauty with years until peak. I can only hope the rest of my bottles are more like this one, and not the first one I opened some months ago.

I agree with below. This wine is built for the ages as far as white Bordeaux goes. Those that have bad bottles should not put a score or rate the wine. Excellent style for what it is. Excellent structure in the acid that should help this last for a very long time. Get some great east coast cold water oysters and go at it.

I tried my first bottle a few years back, and it's very clear to me now how much this wine benefits from aging. It's deepened so nicely, having a great golden color and slightly oxidized flavors - creamy butterscotch, with some nuts and pear thrown in there. And the acidity was still there as well. This is one of my only experiences to date with aged white Bordeaux, and it's been a very positive one. I'd like to get some more of this to see what happens after a few years.

Disappointed. Like others, can't decide if the bottle was flawed, or it's supposed to be this way. Mostly must, with a little citrus and vanilla on the nose. Palate almost syrupy; some apricot/citrus with a short, almost effervescent finish. Glad I only invested in a half bottle. Wouldn't step up for any more of this one, but might consider a more recent vintage based on the raves from the wine merchant.

This has really come round. Tonight we had it with dinner (Tilapia with a curry/butter/lemon sauce). It was rounder and fuller than the last bottle we drunk and I think it is fully ready to drink now and showing very well. Lovely wine. It just showing the slightest hint of the effects of oxidation on the finish--a bit of butterscotch that, for me, precedes a white wine's decline. For me, it is a point. Drink now and probably for the next year or two, but I do worry that it may not make old bones.

Nice light golden color. Nose is a bit musty with some citrus, some cream. Palate has good balance, some fruit, some tartness, nice short to medium-length grapefruit finish. Fairly full bodied, a bit waxy. Honestly, this is a decent wine and I'm glad I tried it, but not worth stocking up on at $20/half. Very oaky?, but not enough acidity to let it age.

Very pale colour; barely any viscosity in glass (and equally rainwater-like on palate). Initially massive blast of oak comes into focus and balance after decanting for 20 minutes. At this stage the oak is very dominant, wheras the 70% Sauvignon Blanc have -alas- aromatically and taste-wise gone to sleep; more present the silkiness and fat of 30% Semillon. Short watery finish with almost no resonance. I think Parker has got it right with his drinking recommendation (until 2025): this wine is palatable, but not displaying its potential quality right now. I'll wait another 3-5 years before opening the next bottle. Whether his score (93P) is plausible or not I am not experienced enough to judge - all I can say that the wine in my glass screams "88P" and the highest rating I could imagine it ever attaining upon full maturity is 90P(+) So I'll settle for 89P.

Popped and poured through an aerator. This is aromatically fantastic: apricot, grapefruit, lemon, vanilla. All of that's on the palate, where the subtle oak ads a marshmellowy, almost custard-like aspect to the lengthy finish. Still quite youthful, without much secondary character, although all the flavors are well integrated at this point. Very big, fat wine, too, with great acidity to match. It will certainly drink well for much longer, but I suspect it's at its apex, at least as far as my palate goes. 92.

From half bottle... I had a half bottle of this earlier from the same lot that was utterly shot, dark golden and fully oxidized. Badly disappointing given that this is my favorite value white Graves and the high scores for the 2005. Anyway, I figured, time to drink up! This bottle is slightly advanced in color, but not as bad as the first. Wow, what a difference! This is a sensational white Bordeaux, tangy, long, mouth coating, honey meeting freshly cut grass, dry yet rich, fleshy yet lean... AKA balanced, but with an extra dimension of verve. Not complex, but I'm not gonna wait to see if more develops. Too risky and this is too delicious right now. 93 points for all it's zest, length, class, and enjoyment.

Brutally young, but how wonderful. Honey, straw, sandalwood, lemon curd, hints of spice and saline. The 12% alcohol came across a little hot tonight but by no means pervasive. The acidity, in it's current state, was pacified with food. A good hour-and-a-half opened this beauty up like the virgin it still is. Brilliant, limpid color and nose that is really hinting at the future. Best around 2014-2016?

Bordeaux Dinner at Dino: 82 Canon to 05 SHL Blanc and a lot inbetween (Dino's Washington, DC): A wine that is stylistically dissonant from the SHL Blanc and most likely two notches qualitatively inferior. The Carbonnieux Blanc is far lighter on its feet (and in color)…a food wine, so to speak. Melon, light floral notes and some slate stone are present on the nose. The palate expresses a balanced sense of grapefruit and lemon, but the finish is far more curt and less focused than the SHL Blanc. This is a wine I’d prefer on a porch deck, chatting with friends while grilling vegetables, alas the price doesn’t seem to justify its quality. 90FW

Drank at Caiola's in Portland, ME to accompany a phenomenal antipasto plate. Very pale, greenish color. Beautiful, intense nose of lemon, grass, violets and apples. Good acidity and rich fruit on the palate. Better even than the last time I had it (8/21/08) and not showing any signs of closing up. A beautiful expression of white Bordeaux.

Clear pale lemon gold w/ a watery rim. Light legs. On the nose, it is clean and moderately intense. Youthful notes of grass, light citrus, and a touch of baking spice. On the palate it is dry w/ medium plus acidity. Moderate alcohol, slightly thin body. Flavor is moderately intense showing grass, pineapple, and citrus. Nice length.

Full disclosure: Carbonnieux has been one of my favorite wines year in and year out ever since I got into wine. So take it with a grain of salt (the wine was not tasted blind).
Lemon in the glass, inviting nose of grapefruit and mineral. Powerful, elegant flavors of apple, grapefruit, well integrated vanilla and butterscotch, all over some steely minerals. Perfectly balanced, with a long finish; this wine sets up camp in the back of your mouth and stays there for seemingly ever. A great vintage of a great wine.

NSMFOW August '08: Mostly French New World Partnerships (The Grapevine, Salem, MA): I had this same wine a couple of weeks ago and it showed much better tonight--not sure why. It was served at a better temperature (slightly warmer) this time. Light yellow color. Nose of white fruits, flowers. Palate of tart apple, some pear, some orange rind, anise. Good minerality, acidity. Nice finish. This is a really enjoyable wine.

Mineral, lime zest, lemon, and flowers on the nose. The palate has unripe pineapple, rich apple and lemon, and a slightly toasty edge. Quite a long finish! A very nice, complex wine.

Light yellow color. Nose of white fruits, flowers. Palate of tart apple, some pear, some orange rind. Good minerality, acidity. Nice finish. I'm not getting the complexity of some of the other reviews, but I am, admittedly, not an expert in white Bordeaux. Drank as an aperitif. On the whole, a nice wine.

Tasting Group Dinner - Bordeaux (Fugaise, Minneapolis): Intense nose of melon and white flowers. Steely, intense flavors of salty seashell, lemongrass, bitter melon, and orange peel. Bracing acidity. Super-long finish. This is complex and resonant, and seems to have a ton of potential, although at the moment it's tight and stern.

Good example of a white Bordeaux. Nice balanced taste (melon with some citrus), very floral nose, and dry finish. Had with a cheese plate, and held up well against each of the types. Price is the reason I didn't rate it higher, I feel that their are better examples available at less than half the price.

bordeaux tasting (Binny's Highland Park): nose: really full nose with great flavors of melon, tangerines, lemon-lime tones, a bit of vanilla and just a bit of minerality
taste: explosive flavors with a velvety edge to them of tangerines, melon rines, lemon peels, and various citrus fruits
overall: This had been opened for a while when I got to it, so that definitely helped it. This one has a lot of elegance, but there is also that fun youthful exuberance to it right now. It needs more time to really show what it has, but this is an outstanding wine that is just delicious

Citrus peel, ripe yellow fruit, flowers, straw and a hint of smoke and spices in the open nose. The palate is smokey and spicey, with ripe yellow fruit, a hint of honey and a rather long after taste. Good acidity. This is better then before and drinking well now.

The Cabbonnieux was my first experience with white Bordeaux. I actually thought the Semillon came through strong as I detected quite a bit as fresh cut grass on the nose, and I associate this with Semillon.

fruity and buttery - and yet so crisp and acidic in the mouth. lots of malolactic fermentation and new oak? Its a great wine, but its almost like two different wines in one. The aromas stemming from the first whiff to the last are cream and vanilla, perhaps just a bit of pineapple, and then something subtle but pungent like mushrooms. But the palate is stiff and unyieldingingly fresh like new cut grass. Aftertaste goes on and has a cilantro or peppermint quality which is not unpleasing but somehow lightyears away from the nose. May it become more integrated in the bottle in a few years! Would serve with lobster gratiné au truffe noir with some vanilla infused cream, fennel and orange salad. Excellent now, almost want to say outstanding but it may be stretching it.

Much, much drier, more acidic, less rounded than I had hoped for, based on Parker's review. The 2003 was initially a very rich, earthy, buttery wine, with a nice Sauvignon Blanc edge. The 2003 seemed to have lost its well-roundedness and become not much more than a decent Sauvignon Blanc. The 2005 seems to have started where the 2003 left off. Not much more than flavors of Sauvignon Blanc here. Gone are the mushrooms, hay, and buttery flavors I had hoped to find.

The best white Carbonnieux I've had... made in a more serious style. Eucalyptus, minerals and herbs in the expressive nose. On the palate serious citrus-like acidity, melon and ripe apple, minerals, herbs... This is very primary now, but good with food. Give at a year or two, three to fully blossom.

In short, this is far better than when I tried this wine last year and is improving rapidly. It is probably still young but enjoyable now (not so enjoyable this time last year). 89-90

Excellent structure in the acid that should help this last for a very long time. Get some great east coast cold water oysters and go at it.

This is one of my only experiences to date with aged white Bordeaux, and it's been a very positive one. I'd like to get some more of this to see what happens after a few years.

Palate almost syrupy; some apricot/citrus with a short, almost effervescent finish. Glad I only invested in a half bottle. Wouldn't step up for any more of this one, but might consider a more recent vintage based on the raves from the wine merchant.

It just showing the slightest hint of the effects of oxidation on the finish--a bit of butterscotch that, for me, precedes a white wine's decline. For me, it is a point. Drink now and probably for the next year or two, but I do worry that it may not make old bones.

This is a sensational white Bordeaux, tangy, long, mouth coating, honey meeting freshly cut grass, dry yet rich, fleshy yet lean... AKA balanced, but with an extra dimension of verve.

Redcurrant and sappy apple flavors; energetic, with good balance. Needs 2-3 more years in cellar.

Tasting Group Dinner - Graves (Heidi's, Minneapolis): Consistent with prior TN. Crisp flavors of bitter melon and white flowers, framed by tight, almost steely minerality. Complex and layered. Delicious but very young.

My first experience with White Bordeaux just hanging out; sure I have had with wine pairings at restaurants and in France. Very impressed! Great complexity, smoothness and flavors. Kinda had some tastes from Chablis, Chard and Sauvingnon Blanc. Wonderful!

A perennial QPR in the white Graves category, the 2005 in bottle is crisp and flavorful, showing tequila and lime aromas and flavors. It has tightened just a bit, but shows very nice balance and thirst-quenching pleasure.

A goot sauvignon blanc, but as I have found many times before with this wine, the semillon seems missing in action. What's there is very good, though.

Better when slightly warmer. Too chilled, and this tastes like nothing much more than sauvignon blanc. A bit warmer and some of the honeyfruit comes out.

fruity and buttery - and yet so crisp and acidic in the mouth. lots of malolactic fermentation and new oak?
