At a wine bar. Popped and poured, and gulped down within one hour. Just humming at this point, and great on both the nose and palate. Well kept bottle to be sure, but 1982 continues to show in its wonderful long-lived wines.

Last time trying this was 3 yrs ago and wasn't a huge fan. This time, again perhaps bottle variation at play, was quite nice. Definitely on the decline, but still classic.

Notes of tobacco and pencil lead upon opening. Beautifully complex after about 30 to 60 min. Slight dried cherry, blackberry with pronounced coffee, leather and graphite. Medium bodied, still juicy and fresh with pleasurable acidity. Resolved tannins and with incredible persistence. Drinking beautifully

Paul D's Graves Greats (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): On first pour there is something odd about the nose, suggestive of low level cork taint. Mercifully after 10 mins in the glass this largely blows off and the wine is enjoyable. There is something a little minty to the nose in addition to very Graves tobacco characteristics. Lovely savouriness to it. There are some notes of grated milk chocolate to the nose too. A treat.

Glorious Graves at Piccolino (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Deep garnet. Intense cigar box nose, blackcurrant fruit, spice. Medium bodied, quite rich dark fruit, cigar box, soil, soft tannins, fresh acidity, fans out into a long finish. Excellent, drinking beautifully.

Parker described it as one of the worst wines he had. It misses fruit. But 1982 has been a tough year for the winery and was not at all the standard it offers today. Taste: pure, raw, taninne, low fruit, hard and good with our beef filet.
1982 Château Pape Clément Graves ($25 in 1984). Soft cork. Tried two-pronged device but cork pushed into the bottle. Decanted. Light-mid brick, amber edges; spicy, herbaceous (58% Cabernet, 42% Merlot), cedar, leather nose; fading fruit; palate not as good as the nose; soft body; soft tannins; short thinning finish. w/beef and bearnaise sauce. 16 UC Davis scale, 90 other scales.

Drank with a friend who had introduced us to this producer by sharing a lot of 05 mags. That wine is still resting happily in the cellar, but these 82s are drinking well right now. Paired with a rib eye and it is just a perfect combination. Drinking really well at the moment but not going anywhere soon. More secondary in style. Enjoyable.

One of my favorites of the evening. It's just good aged Bordeaux. There is something to be said for the '82 vintage. Bought a lot of a bunch of different producers earlier in the year and so far have found they all drink well. This was no exception. It's your middle-level Bordeaux. Incredibly tasty, but not really deep or complex or evolving. This is in drinking window. Don't think it's going anywhere, but no real value in holding longer either.

Nez sur fruit noir, cuir, poivron., très expressif. En bouche, tout est bien fondu, tanins soyeux, c'est ample et de bonne longueur. Peut vivre encore plusieurs années

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind: Tasted blind. Rich and concentrated with just a faint (enjoyable) barnyard hint along with earth, mushroom and smoked meat. Very good balance and length. I haven't had this wine in many years, and it was much better today vs what I remember from a decade+ ago. Served alongside the 1997.

Saturday Blind Tasting - Bordeaux '03 and Older (Chevalier Fine Wines): Served blind and next to the '97 Pape Clement. Gorgeous broad nose that has dried plum, horsey notes and earth tones. The palate is complex and still fresh. Big burst of flavor and concentration on the mid-palate. Terrific showing.

Similar to earlier notes; mid-brick, amber edges; earthy, smokey, tobacco and cedar nose; mid-body to soft; good flavor; a little short on the finish; time to consume last bottle.

Regular dinner group (@ PZ): In the bouquet coffee, mocha, tea, smoke and beautiful oak. On the palate a beautiful and mature wine. Still juicy. Coffee, chocolate, sweet spices, beautiful oak, earth, mushrooms and autumn flavors. Still very good and pleasant acidity and soft tannin. This is a fully mature and extremely beautiful bottle. The wine will not improve anymore, but becoming at this age and being still so beautiful, if you have a well stored bottle it will probably still be nice around 2020 or even an bit later. But until 2040 as the drinking window in CT indicates now is imho quite ridiculous.

Bordeaux Left Bank (semi blind) (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Fairly light color, orange-brick on the rim. Wonderful complex in the nose with thick ripe fruits and then iron, blood, brick, dust and earth notes. On the powerful palate elegant with fruits, pebbles, iodine earth and a great finish. Still going strong but probably better enjoy now.

Opened the bottle with plenty of curiosity but little expectation given Pape Clement was not exactly a top Chateau in the early 80s. Very top shoulder fill, completely soaked cork which however came out entirely with some efforts. Pnp - given the age a still relatively young and healthy garnet with only slight browning at the rim. Initially nose and palate dominated by sous bois, cedar, a little barnyard and high acidity. Took about 10 minutes before a little fruit appeared. Pleasant drinking but clearly the wine is way past peak. Despite the age, the palate is not entirely soft and mellow but has still a bit of roughness, hinting at a wine that was perhaps not stellar even in its best days. Impressive indeed what progress has been made at Pape Clement in the 90s (the 95 and 96 is excellent), and in the 00s if you like their modern style, as this is clearly not even at the level of an (admittedly very good) 82 Phelan Segur.

The wine had a pretty good cork for its age, and a base neck fill. The color shows the advanced age on this wine, dark black core with heavily browned rims, almost as if oxidized. On the nose there are clear aromas of mushroom, underbrush, cassis, blackberries, old leather boots, volatile acidity, crushed stones, with small amounts of black pepper. The flavors on this mid-bodied wine were quite rustic, very dirty dusty earth flavors, with some dark fruits, leather, dark chocolate, flavors and a rancio note on the end. The wine is very smooth, great tertiary flavors but weak finish, there seems to be some rustic beauty behind it.

somewhat tired and a bit thin, but with some nice tertiary flavors of underbrush and leather. This had worst cork (dried-crumbly) and fill (but still VHS) of the several I brought to '82 cheapie dinner, so it’s possible other bottles could show better. B-

Even after an Xmas binge, one whiff of this will reset your senses to quality. Should have been drunk a little sooner since its now going soft, but the initial earthy nose is unforgettable. Don't let it sit around or the essence evaporates away.

85-87pts. O.

Before the 2nd Testing, I was impressed from the first testing in 2000 then I did it again at the end of 2006. Vintage 1982 is not the good year for Pape Clement but it's not bad or ugly as Paker said. This bottle from the private cellar is such a perfect condition. it's pretty good for us !! At its peak position, I can rate 90/100. If I had a chance to get it again and it's not too expensive, I will.

pristine bottle, cork intact with minimal penetration. considering the vintage and the quality of this chateau the wine is a bit of a disappointment. initially, the wine seems slightly madeirized. however, this dissipates after a few minutes. the bouquet is not very forthcoming, however the presence of fruit is evident. subtle hints of plums and raisins. good mouth feel but short finish. the wine is fully integrated and will not go anywhere from here.

Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red/purple center with orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed cherries, honey, roasted meat, and soil.
In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with attractive richness, moderate acidity, and good length.
While not a blow-away wine, this is attractive and delivers a nice 1982 experience after 3+ hours in a decanter.
