Robe très sombre, nez de tabac, café, cassis et poivron rouge mûr. En bouche, c'est resté jeune et assez tannique. Le "petit" millésime lui enlève un peu de fruit, mais c'est tout de même un grand vin.

See my prenious post in Oct 21 - opened my next bottle. Strike on! What a gem! 3hrs decant. Elegant colour. Nose is elegant and elevating. Tons of blue and black berries, a bit of coffee and of char; Tertiaries have developed well. Vivid colour. Vintage was average, but this one is a stunner. Palate is confirming nose. Tannins have intergrated super well: still a very bit grippy, but never mind over an awesome meal. Drinking window finally and wide open. Drink now or never.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). 13,5% alcohol.
Dense, fully opaque blackish-red color with a faint, evolved pomegranate color. The dark-toned nose feels slightly evolved and subtly sweetish with aromas of dark plummy fruit, some toasty oak spice, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant, a light Fino Sherry-like streak of aldehydic greenness and a hint of pruney dark fruit. The wine feels ripe, quite silky and pretty open-knit on the palate with a moderately full body and quite savory flavors of juicy dark plum and meaty umami, some wizened dark berries, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light woody notes of pencil shavings, a brambly hint of black raspberries and a faint aldehydic touch of green almonds or green apple slices. The structure relies a bit more on the high acidity than on the somewhat resolved yet still moderately grippy medium tannins. The finish is long, savory and somewhat grippy with a dry, slightly aldehydic aftertaste of ripe blackcurrants and savory meaty character, some brambly notes of black raspberries, a little bit of toasty mocha oak, light woody nuances of pencil shavings, a juicy hint of dark plummy fruit and a touch of aldehydic greenness.
I've had this vintage once before, and back then it was a very lovely and serious effort. Had it not been suffering from a faint touch of acetaldehyde, which lent a vague green-toned note of sorrel or green almond to the flavors, this probably would've been better than the 2000 vintage, which felt a bit bigger and more polished in comparison. However, the aldehydic greenness took its toll on the wine and while you could taste the finesse and complexity, this bottle was a bit of a let-down. It was still an enjoyable wine, but knowing how good this vintage can (and should) be, this vintage turned out the be the most disappointing bottle in our 2002-1985 vertical of Cos d'Estournel, unfortunately.

Quite the range of tasting notes below, from drink now to relax and drink over next 5 years. I’m more the latter based on the last but one of the case tried last night. Plenty of fruit, beautifully integrated and good length. I will probably save the last one until 2027 to see how it is at 25 years old - I think it would also be fine in 2032 but not sure I have the patience.

Popped and poured, the view (I think correctly) being that this lighter vintage wouldn't withstand the decant required for the Montrose 2004. Mature, more tertiary nose, with more gamey notes than fruit. Really glorious on the palate, the fruit on the cusp of ceding dominance to earthy maturity, clean acidity, and a long, enthralling finish.

This was my last bottle. It opened over 90 minutes and drank great for 2 hours after. Some cool dark aromas but not a huge nose. The medium fruit still retains some complexity and secondary notes. Tanin fully integrated. Medium length finish. The balance of Cos was great even in this lesser year. A joy today. The best of my bottles. This is not going anywhere. Should have another 5 years of peak drinking....

Surprisingly full, rich and still prodigious fruit in this 2002 Cos d'Estournel. Showed much better than the 2002 Lafitte Rothschild I tried earlier this year. Removed after about 18 years in temperature-controlled wine storage. Bright color, throwing substantial sediment, which I separated by triple decanting, rinsing and returning to the bottle, and drank with dinner. Saved half the bottle, and it held up fine on the second day.

after some fiftheen years in my cellar still powerful and in good shape, with no sign of age. Tertiary scents at the nose which appear consistent at the mouth, where you can feel the multiple dimensions of CdE with wonderful and mouthfilling hints of spices. Maybe 2002 was not the best vintage but with this bottle all promises are kept. Still a few years ahead in its best drinking window. Perfect companion in this rainy and cold evening of May

Given it is current QPR, bad buy. I bought this about 4 years back at a relatively good price. Given that QPR, I think this is delivering decent value. That being said, the couple Piedmont wines I had over this month at half Cos' value are delivering similar pleasure points.

The wine poured a deep purple hue with some slight browning in the edges, indicating some marurity.
On the nose, the wine exuded the fragrance of mature fruits like blackberry, plum and raspberry, coupled with the scent of espresso and chalk. A slight trace of barnyard added a touch of earthiness to the bouquet.
The wine still maintains a good structure, and the dusty tannins are still present. Though the wine is a bit austere, especially in the mid palate, it still provides some fun to drink. The finish is medium length and overall, the wine is quite enjoyable, considering it comes from an off vintage.
Although the wine has already reached its peak, it is still in good condition to drink now, and it is not likely to improve much from here on. Probably terrible QPR at the moment unless you have some bottles laying around.

The wine was a dark ruby red. Eminently drinkable now. Smooth with minimal tannins. Light fruit raspberry/blackberry. Not sure how much age is left on this vintage. Recommend drinking over the next year or so.

This was donated for the Hong Kong Wine Society Annual Dinner 2022 that was served alongside 2012 Sassicaia for the main course - Beef Wellington. Both wines complimented each other with the main course. While the Sassicais was very muscular and sticky on the palate, the Cos was much subtle, more feminine, plenty of soft berries, silly tannins, the familiar cigar box, sweet spice and a medium finish. It is ripe to drink and enjoy it now. Does not have concentrated fruit or much acidity to take it more longer.

Excellent mature BDX, served at a wedding party, but too warm @23C+. So unable to score. Very nice integration of primary, secondary and tertiary flavour. Propably at peak. likely 92-94.

Spectacular out of the bottle, probably a little better after 90 minutes in the decanter, and just superb throughout a subsequent 4 hour drinking window. In a great place right now, but based on this bottle, I don't think there is any hurry here. I'd guess the prime drinking window could go on for another decade or more.

Very enjoyable Cos. Decanted for 90 minutes. Open and alive immediately with rich dark berries and some charcoal on the nose. Deepened with air. Black cherry and earth in the mouth with excellent acidity and balance. Lacked complexity and the whole package was slightly muted owing to the off-vintage but, nevertheless, a fine drink. Paired nicely with lamb, eggplant, and yogurt terrine.

Best bottle (Weindorf Kirchheim, Waldhorn Laube): Glass: Sophienwald Bordeaux Popped and poured. Clear, deep purpel color. Nice, classic left bank Bordeaux nose. On the palate medium+ acidity, medium+ tannin. Fine red fruit, some cherry, some fresh herbs. Very good balance, silky texture, good length. In a wonderful spot right now. 93

Last bottle. Great showing, similar to the one back in February - lots of earth, a little funk, intense and well balanced. Currant and black cherry fruit, lots of secondary notes. Long finish. Just what you want from a mature bordeaux.

Drank this over a 3+ hour dinner. This one has lots of potentials still. Since I have a case of this left, won’t be touching them anytime soon. Initiallly, the nose, and pallets, did not have any BDX notes. 1 Hour in, I get cassis, vanilla, oak, leather, which are the typical BDX notes. Given it’s a 2002, good job!

[Tasted Blind] This pours deep ruby in the glass with light bricking at the rim. The nose on this wine is quite murky not really clearly showing delineated aromas at all. The nose shows prune, figs, old leather, tree bark, and some light shrubby herbaceous notes. The palate shows medium minus tannin and medium minus acid with quite a bit of alcohol noted. The finish is non-descript and murky replaying some elements of the nose. I initially wondered if this was Southern Rhone due to the noted alcohol and overripe character with relatively little tannin. While there isn't really any Bordeaux character on this wine at all, I did wonder if it might be Bordeaux from a warmer year due to the ripe and alcoholic nature. On reveal I think this is just a polished, pushed, worked wine in a bad year that didn't really turn out.

Another lovely showing - probably better than the last one - fragrant - intense and so well balanced. Just a lovely bordeaux - all earth, currant and cherry with such nice balance. Bought on release for $50 - dont know what inflation would make that - but seems like a good investment to me.

A little limpy and low-energy upon opening but came together after 1 hour decanted. Peppery, with the high Merlot/non-CS blend really coming through this vintage. Tasted a lot fresher and younger than it was. Solid if not a great Cos.

Decanted 2 hours. Deep purple. At the beginning dominant herbs in the nose, thyme, slight lovage. After one more hour blueberries dominant, cedar, tobacco, and still thyme. Very good balance tannins integrated. Good length. Very good (especially for 2002 vintage), but not exceptional. At the top now and may hold few years more.

Now this is more like it. I don’t know if it reaches the heights of some other’s experience. Deep ruby color with a beautiful nose of red plums and rich soil. A touch of oak. This is deep and serious. The palate is maturing and is very classic is style. Maybe a bit rugged and four square but that’s ok. A touch of green tannin on the finish keeps the score from going higher. Some tobacco leaf too. I like this wine a lot and am glad the last bottle was just off versus a bigger issue. (92)

This bottle just isn’t right it’s not bad or corked - but seems out of sorts and maybe a bit hot. Bought and cellared on release. Lots of VA covers a core of really nice fruit. Medium bodied yet finishes short with a lot of rubber. I think it’s pre-oxed. Will try another bottle soon. (NR)

Nice classic aromas of wet leather, wet tobacco, dark red fruit and some earthiness. A nice balance but somewhat lightweight though enough structure, tannin, and minerality to complete this.
Surprisingly really nice and classic!

Good fruit, a little soft and lush. Fully mature, good herb and mint and menthol. Wish it had more structure. Dark fruit, coffee. Good. Ready to drink. Should hold for 5-8 years but maybe not longer. Pretty fruit forward for what it is.

Vivid colour. Drank along a Pontet Canet 2002. CdE was heaven, while PC was just lovely. Vintage is average, this one is top. Decanted for 3hrs. Nose is vibrant, dark, coffee, spices, passion. Palate is confirming nose. Tannins are still very grippy and firm (relative to age); Would consequently say that +3-5 yrs will help integrate. Next one in 2026.

Fully developed, this is drinking just great today. No decanting is needed, just pop, pour and enjoy all the round textured red berries, tobacco, exotic spice, wet earth, and herbs that fill the nose and your palate. The elegant finish shows only a minor touch of dryness at the very end, which does not detract from the overall experience of the wine.

Stunning. Utterly proper, on-point Bordeaux. Black cherry, mineral, screaming tobacco and leaf. Very pure, still young but clearly starting to open back up. This has miles and miles ahead.
Well, this was way beyond my expectation. From opening, it delivered an opaque dark color and let us guess that it was in a superbly healthy state. On the nose(after one hour) well this delivered just about as much as we would wish from a St Estephe; dark brooding healthy fruits(who said '02 was a poor vintage?) deep profound echoing with mineral(wet stone) spice, lead pipe and pencil shaving but none of them too much, in fact quite remarkably integral from one another. On the back end, oh boy, this certainly delivered a home run as it had an exquisite texture, bordering full, and the sheer after taste from the fruits were exquisite. A beautiful Chateau, living way up to its reputation on a vintage which was supposed to be lesser. In fact, I believe the lesser ones from Bordeaux are my favorites. Cheers,

Another delicious showing. Expressive right on the pour - but tightened up a little with some air. After an hour, only some medium cedar and earth with dark plum and currant notes (despite an enormous Riedel bdx glass!). Palate is super though. Slight firm, but really nicely balanced with medium tannins, medium acidity and lip-smacking currant and dark plum fruit, great finish. This was at least a 93 and might be higher if the nose opens a little. Revisit the rest tomorrow. :)
Glass from the following night (just with the cork in the bottle) - a little drier and not so fresh. Nose is still not so pronounced, palate is super smooth with lovely balance still. Based on this showing, I would think time to drink up.

This needs some air—I decanted for 1 hour before going to the restaurant, and it took another 45 minutes for this to come to life. Then it was superb, classic Cos, great nose, textured palate, with black currant, graphite and perfect tannins that finish for 45 seconds. I expect it will be at its prime for the next 5 years. 94

Triple splash decanted then given air for 2 hours at home before taking it to our fav French place for dinner. Soft for a Cos d'.....almost feminine given this off year......nice cherry fruit early on, mushrooms, forest floor, leather.....excellent with crispy duck in a reduction sauce. Perfect pairing.
Decanted twice and drank over two evenings. It opened up quite nicely and was just as good, or possibly better, on Night 2. It was very enjoyable to drink with food and exhibited classic Bordeaux flavors. Although this vintage may hold for a while longer, i think it is a good time to drink up.
Following the Pichon, the Cos simply soared. Where the Pichon was secondary, the Cos was still primary with fresh blackberries and currant in the nose and palate. Time has eased the massive tannic structure, but the graphite remains. Finishes very long and strong. Just crazy how good this producer is.
A little thin on PnP, but really filled out after 30 mins in a decanter and a few in the glass. Classic Cos. Fully mature, drinking well now, and I don’t think will get any better from here.
Brought by CC to Brigid's home dinner. PnP drank over a few hours. On the nose a little closed initially. Could do with a decant. Smells and tastes of dark fruits with smooth tannins. Probably starting to lose some fruits. Ready to drink. Will it develop tertiary flavours with more age? Went went with beef steak.
In a very good place. A bit lean, but plenty of gorgeous fruit with tertiary notes creeping in. Maintains a sense of youthfulness. Terrific length and character.
Enjoyable and fully mature. Fruit now slipping the slippery slope, thinning and souring as you’d expect from 02. Drink up. No decant required as enjoyable after 10-15 min.
Very similar showing to the last bottle in April. Lovely medium weight Bordeaux with earthy juicy fruit, nicely complex and well balanced. Light current, cherry and plum notes. Again, very savoury, but with a nice core of sweet fruit.

very subtle aromas in the nose, leather, vanilla, cigar. On the palate good fruit, spices, earthy, cedar and tabacco. Soft tannins, with 2 hours decant perfect to drink now,
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). 13,5% alcohol.
Dark, almost fully opaque blackish-red color with a somewhat evolved maroon hue and a thin brick-orange rim. Roasted, somewhat smoky and slightly sweet-toned nose with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some toasty oak tones and sweet smoke, a little bit of charred sausage and some gamey meat, light woody notes of pencil shavings, a developed, sweet hint of pruney fruit and a touch of toasted exotic spices. Contrasting the somewhat sweet-toned nose, the wine is noticeably leaner on the palate with a medium body and savory, acid-driven flavors of fresh blackcurrants, some woody notes of pencil shavings, a little bit of sweet pruney fruit, light leathery tones, a savory hint of meaty umami and a touch of brambly black raspberry. The structure relies more on the high acidity than on the moderately resolved medium tannins. The finish is long, somewhat meaty and moderately grippy with savory flavors of ripe blackcurrants, some meaty umami, a little bit of peppery spice, light tertiary notes of beef jerky, a crunchy hint of fresh plummy fruit and a meaty touch of charred game.
Despite the relatively bold, sweet-toned nose, the wine turned out to be quite classic, sophisticated and even surprisingly meaty on the palate with quite balanced overall feel, thanks to the relatively high acidity and well-proportioned fruit. Although 2002 is not particularly memorable for a Bordeaux vintage, this has held up very nicely and although is starting to show some evolved, tertiary qualities, I can imagine this vintage will continue to improve for some years more. Very enjoyable at the moment, but will reward if left in a cellar for a handful of additional years. Drink or keep.
This is really nice! A bit of earth and dirt completes a very tasty wine. Not overly deep, it nuanced and showing its pedigree. The rim is still crimson— no browning. I would still drink by 2025.

The nose is heavy perfume like Chanel #5. Great color, great nose and and the wine swirls on the palate with deep, dark fruit. It’s got a good amount of tannins and is just amazing
Surprisingly good. Quite delicate for a “modern” era Cos, impeccably balanced and showing classic Cos notes of five spice, cedar, cassis and cigar ash. A bit of blueberry and creaminess on the finish. Good aromatic lift, acid, and sneaky tannins. It has a certain glossiness to it, but at no point does that obscure the terroir. Very ready to drink now (after a couple hours decant) but will probably hold for another 10 years.

Drank this with a great dinner and enjoyed a nice Sauternes for desert. This bottle was excellent, after decanting for about 1 hour, with intense nose of leather and cherry tobacco, then adding some vanilla spice as it opened up in the glass. Some floral notes creep in with a little more time. On the palette cherry fruit sticks out as well some very nice tannins that are thoroughly enjoyable. A lot of classic earth tones and I began to pick up some coffee/espresso in this as well. My all time favorite chateau in Bordeaux. I'll take this over any of the first growths.
Another lovely showing for this wine. Showing only a little brick on the rim. Nice earthy, red plum dark cherry fruit. Polished and smooth on the palate, with nice freshness to go with the earthy leathery red plum and currant fruit. There is some nice sweetness, but this comes across as more savory than anything else. Really nicely drinking wine with nice complexity. I'm guessing that I need to hit the other 4 bottles sooner than later.
I was worried after reading some of the reviews on here, but this is by no means dead. Still has plenty of fruit and spice. Drink up as I would not expect this to improve much from here.
Opened but not decanted 2 hours ahead for dinner with friends in rural Thailand. Fully opaque red-black. Nose is classic Cos ‘Asian spices’...really lovely, sun-warmed cedar shingles, good depth of poached spiced plums. Palate is moderately fresh, medium acidity, surprisingly good depth of red and black plum fruit. Rich finish but short of length. Surprising... above my expectations especially as it was sourced in Thailand and had endure a 2-day journey from Bangkok in an un-refrigerated van. Nose was better for an extra point or two. Same experience when we opened 3 more bottles over New Year's Eve dinner of Thai food.

After an hour in decanter there was dense chocolate covered cherry fruit. Heavy, concentrated, meaty, but with the occasional perfume high note. Not much in the way of earth or other soulfulness. Thought I sold these '02s or maybe accidentally mixed up an '00. Better than I was expecting anyway.

PNP (in hindsight, incorrectly). At first, chocolate dominate with a distinct new world style coming through. 3 or so glasses later and this become more classic St Estephe with a heavy charcoal/ tar feel to it (unpleasant). Mid way through the bottle and it settles down, with little fruit or balanced tannin however. Surprised by the high rating of others. Disappointing.

92-93: Agree with most of the recent reviews, this wine feels like it's close to hitting another gear, not quite sure it'll get there. Most of the tannins have been resolved, the acid is there, but this wine is really wonderful right now. It could surprise in another year or two. Classic Bordeaux notes, there is some fruit left, however. Just shows what a masterful performer can do even in an "off" year. It's 17 years old and still going strong. Excellent.
Opened and poured after 10 minutes with no decanting. I found a very nice color, deep garnet/maroon, with just some slight bricking around the edge of the pour. Aromas initially were oak and nice vanilla spice, with just a touch of fruit [cherry]. I found it a little closed on tasting, but as I mentioned this was after only 10 minutes and with no decant. Left my glass for an hour and came back to it to find much more going on, and good things! Some more classic Bordeaux character, an earthiness and more cherries. Tannins are strong but not overpowering the wine. This was fun to drink now. I came back to the 2nd half of the bottle on the next night and WOW. This wine was really great on night 2. The vanilla spice from the first night was really strong and I was picking up really good espresso/coffee. The fruit on the palette was great and the tannins were pleasant all the way through a moderately long finish. I know this is selfish and it is better to share, but I am glad I got to drink this whole bottle.
92 but moving up. This was nice drinking all around. Felt like serious wine with depth, complexity and balance. Probably finally nearing a plateau, but concur with the community that this could improve for a couple more years.

Many say this is one of the wines of the vintage, and you have to admit, this is far, far better than I would have expected from a 2002. A deep and dark purple, almost black! Blackcurrents and blackberries. Highly tannic. Yet balanced. And great structure. I'm impressed

1hr+ decant and could use more. Drinking nicely but has age left in it. Cherry and oak on the nose, with more subdued French tones than most of the Bordeaux’s I’ve had. It has a great texture that makes it consumable over a long time frame. Wine is very fruit forward with massive cherry. I’ve never had a wine that smoothers and encapsulates the palate like this one. Small sips are like full mouthfuls. Long finish.

Winorama: A winter in Wineland III; 1/4/2019-1/13/2019 (Portland/Willamette, Eureka, Napa): Interesting comparison to a right bank wine ('09 Lafleur-Gazin). This is obviously a nicer wine and I'd also have said a bit younger in its drinking window although it was more approachable than I originally expected. Was from a Coravin pour where the bottle was almost kicked so it's possible that by this point air had been getting in. Darker black fruits. Some crushed gravel. Lots of blueberry. Bit of earth. Decent tannin. This was actually quite drinkable for me as is although agree that it probably wasn't drinking like a new bottle just uncorked.

Really impressive on this occasion, lovely plump fleshy fruit and velvet texture, everything feels ripe and vibrant. Structure is ripe although the wine does not appear to have that much density, but as a glossy friendly glass of Cru Classe it is delicious for current drinking.

Youthful blackish garnet color with no bricking. Pleasant but (very) shy nose -- chocolate, some cedar, faint licorice, and little in the way of fruit. The tannins are still present but starting to round out. The wine shows nice balance and the finish is surprisingly long. In the end, it's a little boring. It equally lacks anything to complain about and anything to praise.
Approachable and surprisingly classic drinking very well now. With little to remember but little to complain about. Integrated without more improvement in time. For some this was their favourite. For me 8.5

At Charter Oak with Peter and Randy. Drinking very well now. Good structure and balance. Fruit is there, but restrained in this vintage. Will last 5+ more years.

Somewhat lean and lighter body than usual for Cos, due to diluted vintage. Still has some fruit. Enjoyed with a pasta and ragu. Not going to get better, would drink up.
Lots of cool menthol greated my nose and tongue. Twisted with cedar and some graphite and the vestiges of fruit from a diluted vintage. This is not a wine that will benefit from further cellaring and would be a bottle to drink near term.
One the lean side with notes of graphite and flint and woodsmoke. Drinkable enough but does not seem to have enough fruit left to improve much from this point.
Purple color with a bouquet and flavor hinting of cassis on first tasting, but very soon overwhelmed by harsh tobacco notes, making it unpleasant and very unbalanced. Quite different from the other 2002, which was mainly herbal, although the bottles were side by side in my cellar for a long time. Matt Kramer in the latest issue of the Wine Spectator reminded me again that holding wines too long searching for the mystical peak is most often a mistake. Robert Parker has for many years said the same thing, emphasizing that few wines should be held beyond ten years. For a number of years, I have been drinking through bottles that were simply cellared too long, wines that would probably have been quite exceptional, but were clearly on the down hill when I drank them. I am learning, even if I am a slow learner.

Tannin to fruit ratio is heavy on this one however it is still holding together, perhaps for no more than 5 years. Left bank typicity with some granite and dried herbs and some wood notes at the end. Not bad, went well with lunch however not the quality you’d expect from this estate on a better year.

With an hour of air, cedar wood, cassis, forest aromas, tobacco wrapper and peppery spices unfurl, once the wine hit the glass. On the palate, the wine is close to full bodied, with soft tannins and round textures. The finish shows off a citrus note on top of the slightly, spiced, fresh cassis. With another hour of air, the wine filled out, adding truffle, smoke and licorice. This is starting to drink quite well, however another year or even a few more years will add more nuance and softness. But this is not a wine to make old bones, so I'm planning on drinking my remaining bottles over the next decade, or so.

Purple color with a bouquet and flavor dominated by herbal notes with only a faint suggestion of plums. Balance off because of still very prominent tannins. Little nuance or depth and a moderate finish. Much less compelling than its 2000 sibling. Doubt that it will improve in bottle. With any well known wine such as Cos d'Estournel, there is a big risk of label bias, jacking up tasting scores, but tasting every wine blinded would be difficult, at least without a personal wine stewart.

This is moving up slightly in my rating. Seemed to have a very nice fruit mid-palate and less tannic than I remember from when I drank last time. May be nearing a plateau, but good drinking now.

Nose has blackberry, licquorice, currant, and big bouldery minerality. Not roasted in an ‘03 sort of way, but brooding and a little hot. Even after two hours in glass struggling to get much expression here. Palate is actually more approachable and has ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit with soft tannin. Decent midpalate and finish. Technically sound if unremarkable drinking right now.

A lovely aged Bordeaux. Lots of nice tannins and rich earth notes. Hints of dried fruit, must and wine cave in the nose. A great wine to accompany a steak dinner.

From coravin. Bouquet of oak with very faint fruit. On palate iron and blood notes with more wood but the fruit is hard to discern. Tannins are still thick but a bit of tartness typical of not so great years. Medium to long finish of dried toasted oak. I'm sure with air something else will come of this but for now I worry this bottle is past it's time.

Pop n pour and drank over a 2 hour window. This gives off a nose of cassis, damp earth, pencil and cigar box that leads way to a softer, juicy red fruited and cedar driven palate. Quite good given the context of the vintage.

In great shape at age 15. Gorgeous dark ruby with a brilliant red rim. Nary a sign of age. Amazing viscosity as well, with big red legs. Excellent nose of iron, lead pencil, and mulberry. Wow! Super smooth, super sleek in the mouth, with medium body and richly fruited. This is one incredibly sexy wine, right at its peak of drink ability. All tannins are resolved, but nothing suggests any decline. Just a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. Finishes in a suave, sophisticated fashion. I haven't tasted many Bordeaux from this vintage, but this is certainly the best of the lot. 5-14-17-9: 95/100.
I would not go into details of its appearance, nose and flavours.
I would say this is Cos for "poor man" like me. 2002 is not a strong vintage and is reflected in its reasonable price. It is nice to drink, yet nothing special about it.
It tastes pretty good when pnp, but doesn't get better after aeration. Tastes rather unpleasant on day 2 after vacuum-pumped and refrigerated (as I usually do to my left-over wines). I don't think it will get much better after cellaring.

I liked this better than some - this is a tasty bottle of Cali! Oops, it's St Estephe. More fruit driven than I expected, sweet cassis, still a bit of vanilla, good length. B

I think this is what it is now. Good Bordeaux from an off vintage. Flavors are good, but not great, balance is in order, still tannic, but not as overwhelming as my last bottle three years ago. Maybe will get slightly better over another couple years, but will never be a 95 pointer (not that that was expected).

Tight and young, red berries and jam like qualities, tannins still dominate and needs time. Apparently one the success stories of a week vintage. Will be good after 3-5 years of cellaring.

Heard this was drinking well, so I took a turn. Highly expressive nose right out of the gate, marked by black licorice, menthol, minerals and a touch of new oak. Smelled a lot like a Priorat. The palate is similar, ready to go and showing mildly sweet black fruits with a long and distinctive finish of menthol. Quite silky and open for a 'young' Bordeaux. This is nice and reasonably balanced without too much oak or sugar, and I enjoyed it, but this didn't really taste much like Bordeaux, showing more of an anonymous international style. Maybe more typicity develops in the cellar, and this will certainly keep for many years to come.

Tuesday Night Double Blind Tasting, $60+ (Bin 75): Dark color, not giving away a lot. On the palate, structured and pretty big. I actually thought it might be Italian Merlot. Was pretty surprised when we saw what it was - would never have guessed it to be '02, was much more like a young classic vintage. Came from a very well-stored cellar, so all may not be this young, but this one still needed a few more years.

Had at a wine dinner (btw the other Bordeaux was a '02 La Miss, and the Cos crushed it). Very much a surprise in terms of quality for the vintage. Drinking nicely, full of class and quality...lighter than classier years but beautiful. Haven't seen it for sale but I imagine it's a value, and one of the wines of this vintage.

Decanted just before dinner. First bottle of 2 cases purchased EP for $51. Remarkably rich and ripe for a 2002, nice nose of black fruits and black licorice. Full mouthfeel, fine, lingering finish.
Drinking fine now but no rush; I suspect this will evolve in interesting ways for at least a decade, maybe two.

Tremendous effort for a 2002, probably my best so far. Full bodied and fully mature, opulent and balanced. More length on the palate and I'd scored it even higher.

Pretty consistent with previous experience (scored 93 before too). This bottle drink great on pop and pour but gave an hour of decant. Paired with ribeye, showing some good red and black fruit. Certainly still relatively primary - very dark in colour no bricking at the edges. At early stage of perfect drinking window but will be long lived. I'd say now - 2030. Great wine for the vintage.

Cos d'Estournel Vertical with Aymeric de Gironde (Ripple Restaurant in DC): A nice surprise. At the first stage of peak, cassis, a hint of cedar, mocha, lactic and red pencil. Excellent concentration, good acidity and noticeable tannins, typical of the 02 Bordeaux. There is enough fruit concentration to support the acidity and structure. Very enjoyable.

15 Vintages of Cos d'Estournel (Ripple - Washington, DC): Rich with dark plums and currants on the nose, along with earth, cedar, leather and pepper. Full but smooth, the smoothest wine so far in the tasting, still rich but accessible, even bright. Still plenty of solid tannic structure, some brightness from the acid, very pretty currant fruit doused in wet leaves, leather, tobacco. Silky, starting to show elegance. My least favorite vintage of the night, which is saying something, because this wine is beautiful.

Lovely Bordeax that is coming into maturity. Decanted for 2.5hrs and it truly needs it. The nose of chocolate leather and blackberry compote. The Taste is balanced and has a lovely warm blueberry pie with caramel sauce. I suggest this wine will only benifit from another 10yrs of long term aging but a pleasure to enjoy today.

Andrew and Howard's birthday dinner: A refreshing Bordeaux before the main event … A quintessential Left Bank Bordeaux nose of blackcurrants, cedar, cassis, graphite and spices. On palate, elegant and refined but seeming fully ripe and concentrated. Flavours of dark plums, black cherries, blackcurrants and soy. A very complete Bordeaux. Clean and dry with good acidity. I’ve had the 2002 Cos before. It is a much underrated wine, in its leaner style … Into its drinking window now but no hurry needed.

Dark, concentrated, and youthful. Red and dark fruits, pepper, and licorice. Lots of spiciness. Oak still hasn't integrated at this stage. Firm tannins. Lacks a bit in the mid-palate. A smooth, elegant finish. A strong showing from 2002, and still young for the vintage. I was surprised by the ripeness and purity of fruit with this wine. Give it time.

Decanter Masterclass 8 November 2015, with Dimitri Augenblick. Slightly underwhelming wine, less complete than 2005 and 2010 and quite modern. Notably, a classic vintage, a touch floral and overtly mint, quite a simple wine. The alcohol and medicinal notes were very distracting

Generally agree with other notes. This is delicate almost thin in body. It was generally unimpressive on day 1, improved a bit on day 2. My opinion is that it really wasn't worth the cost, but still drinkable. Most say this won't improve but Im going to give my next bottle a year or 2.

Very deep, dark purple with strong almost meaty flavors. This is not a lightweight. I didn't get a lot on the nose. Palate has moderate fruit although a bit more evident with time and air. WIne leans towards darker fruits and still drinking very young and showing very little of secondary let along tertiary qualities. No rush here

This could be the wine of the vintage. There is ample depth, sweetness of fruit, silky tannins and a regal character with notes of dark chocolate, boysenberries and spice in the finish. Decanted 30 minutes, the wine got better and better as it built up steam. Yes, if you want to picky, there is a touch of grit in the finish, but there is such a beautiful wealth of quality to the fruit, I did not care. And due to the weakness of the vintage, the wine sells for a song, compared to the top vintages of COS. This is not a wine to invest in, but it's definitely a wine to drink.

Dark balckberry fruit on entry that gives way to cassis, graphite and slate notes. Finish: a bit monolithic but there is more spice and red fruit notes to come in over time. Solid Cos.

Upon popping the cork greeted by a sublime perfume of vanilla, tobacco and earthiness. Tasting a sip straight from bottle already quite open for business but gave it a two hour decant. In the glass the wine was of a very dark inky colour with no lightning around the edges which surprised me a little bit. Beautiful wine in this tough vintage, no doubt, noble St Estephe, earthiness, vanilla, forest floor, kirsch - ends astringent and very drying, a tad too drying for my liking. Enjoyed a couple glasses over a period of 4 hours and towards the end I noticed a little bit of disturbing pepper like aromas, by that time the wine had 6 hours of time in the decanter. In short, definitely in its perfect drinking window, I would decant briefly. Should last another decade if kept under perfect conditions. For full disclosure this bottle had been stored at sub optimal conditions for the last three years.

Enjoyed this wine along with pork roast enwrapped in a crackling made of bacon and fresh herbs. Very distinctive bouquet. At first, cedar wood, mocha, tobacco and leather. After some more time in the decanter, the wine showed additional aromas of black currant, blackberry, heart cherry, pencil shavings and some ash. Very nice and classic. Sinewy on the palate, but not plump at all. Full-bodied, medium acid and with ripe tannins that leave a smooth impression. Red fruits, red currant, cherry, coffee, earthy and fine wood. Long-lasting finish. Already approachable, but there is no reason to rush things. Drink or hold.

A Comparative Bordeaux blends tasting (France, NZ, US etc) with Peter: A lovely nose of leather, black currants, cassis and soy. The wine divided the group. Some thought that the palate under-delivered on the promise of the bouquet and that the acidity hid some of the fruit. Others, who were not put off by the acid profile, had the 2002 Cos as their wine of the flight, thinking it was a big wine, with serious fruit volume and structure. Many thought the wine a First Growth from a leaner year. I was closer to the second group. Even though the wine is quite approachable, I think it has many years ahead of it. Cabernet Sauvignon 58% and Merlot 38%.

Filled with licorice, cocoa, spice, earth, cassis and blackberry, this subtle wine sneaks up on you with 20-30 minutes of air. The tannins soften, the wine fleshes out and the textures gain silkier characteristics. This is an outstanding wine and because the vintage has a mixed reputation, for Cos, the wine is priced fairly. Drink it for pleasure now, or age it for more complexity.

Cos d'Estournel dinner with Aymeric de Gironde & Charles Thomas (Les Amis): Tasted after/alongside the 05, this really came across as "weak". Dark ruby. Nose of aniseed, spice. Dark fruits on the palate with resolved tannins. However it still seemed rustic, with a tad of bitterness towards end of palate. Medium-length.

Excellent. 91+ pts

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, St. Estephe (Rodwell House): Black-red in colour the nose is subtle with complex oak spices and brooding fruit. The entry is ripe fruited with plenty of blackcurrants and black cherry set against sweet spices and layers of complexity. The wine feels bold and powerful with a gravelly texture and plenty of material in the mid-palate, but quite oak-dominated, almost New world in style. There is plenty of ripe blackcurrant, prune, casis and blackberries that mix with the sweet spices that linger to an extended length supported by firm, powdery tannins. An excellant wine that has all the faculties but lacks some real class.

Bordeaux tasting (Trapezaria restaurant): Clear, deep purple color. The nose is clean, showing medium+ intensity, with a developing character of leather, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, ripe blackcurrant and plum, black olives, graphite. The wine is dry, medium+ body, medium intensity, medium alcohol (13.50%), medium acidity, medium tannins that felt quite round for a wine from St Estephe, but then again its already been 12 from the vintage, green bell pepper, capsicum, black fruits jam, sweet oak, dense in the midalate filled with plums, juicy and a full medium+ finish. Outstanding quality, ultra premium price, can age but its hard to resist drinking it now

My tasting note from one year ago applies to this bottle as well. Still quite unevolved, although its grip has loosened. This time round I'll add to the descriptors: hollow core, stemmy, and a bit gritty. Bottom line: I'd be happy to have this wine on my table any night; but one needs to manage expectations with this wine -- like many wines of this vintage, enjoy it for what it is, rather than complain about what it is not. As far as drinking window goes, drink now; it will be on its plateau of maturity for many years, but will not evolve into a better wine than it is today.

Still ridiculously young, even after three hours in a decanter. Blueberries, vanilla and a touch of tobacco on the nose and more of the same when tasted. Relatively short profile - moderate lengthy and hints of complexity yet to properly develop.

Occasional tasting group (@ My place Bordeaux 2002 plus some other nice wines.): Drank Pagodes de Cos beside the Cos d'Estournel 2002. The second wine has a beautiful bouquet and is in a really nice drinking stage now. Supple and round tannin and all in good harmony. On the other hand, on the palate the wine doesn't deliver what the bouquet promises. A bit thin on the mid-palate. The Cos itself had a deeper bouquet with even more beautiful oak, smoke, cedar and cassis. On the palate also more concentrated with the same impressions as in the nose and some licorice and bell pepper as well. The other (experienced) tasters who got these two wines blind, only knowing it was 2002 Bdx, were not sure (except for one). They agreed the Cos was more luxurious in the nose and more concentrated on the palate, but the Pagodes was so much more friendly now. They wondered if the second bottle, the Cos itself, would improve with more ageing. Personally I think it will. Three more years of cellaring will probably be wise I suppose; So around 2017. My personal scores for today; Pagodes 89 and Cos 91+

Drank with rack of lamb roasted with mustard and rosemary. Kind of disappointing. Still quite tannic, could find a nice core of fruit, but way down there. I'm generally not a fan of highly rated St. Estephes, not sure if it's the blend or something else. But I was hoping to really like this and came away underwhelmed.

2013 Sailing Trip in the Dodecanese; 7/12/2013-7/21/2013 (Athens & The Dodecanese): Decanted for 1.5 hours and this is needed at this stage. Once the wine develops it reveals a spicy, peppery nose with a good mineral edge and dark fruit. On the palate it carries on a mineral tune, good fruit and elegance. Very pure old school bordeaux. Much like the Palmer 02 it lacks the density and depth of fruit that a good vintage would have but still this is far from a poor vintage wine. The Tannins are firm and at times with a rough edge but nothing that a few more years cannot fix. Lots of life in this. 92+ and definitely has improved vs last time we came across it.

Surprisingly unevolved. Dark color. Lacks complexity now, which I believe is because it fools you with its youth. Still, you can coax the underlying layers of smokey tobacco and cool stones of St. Estephe. Also surprising depth and fruit for the vintage. If you had this wine blind, you'd never peg it for a 2002. Nice wine.

Decanted for 30 Minutes. Useful as the wine is tight and sharp to start. Dark in colour with a red tint. On the nose is very cab sauv, with oaky notes but still the fruit dominates. On the palate it gets it a bit wrong and although enjoyable it is a bit dissapointing for a cos. Granted its on the young side but the tannin is a bit astringent and there is a dry feel to it from the mid palate to the end. Good nose but on the difficult side on the palate. We are Cos grouppies and we have tried most Cos from the 70s onwards but this 02 , at least at the moment, is on the dissapointing side. 90 wait and hope.

From a half bottle: color is dark, nearly opaque garnet with just a hint of age; mild, dusty nose, and a palate of medium, fairly reserved fruit, pencil shavings, bit of tobacco and coffee grounds, moderate but mildly mouth gripping tannins, nice acidity, pretty decent balance. No blockbuster, for sure, but a very pleasant wine that will probably be more enjoyable in another 6-10 years as it develops more complexity and bottle sweetness. First time I have tasted this since release, when it seemed to be one of the bigger wines of the vintage. It has definitely leaned out and shed weight. Not nearly as elegant and enticing as the 2001 version.

Forward in style, this began showing well after 30 minutes in the glass. Round in texture, with ripe, spicy blackberry, cassis, earth and tobacco, it was already a pleasure to drink. It has the stuffing to improve, but if you have more than a few bottles, there is no reason to wait.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - 2002 Horizontal (Blue Water Cafe): Medium red. Less distinctly Bordeaux on the nose than the Poyferre with a modern and ‘universal cab sauv’ profile. In the mouth it’s quite smooth with darker fruit and spicy notes on the palate. Finish is dry and a little clipped. This seemed to improve in the glass and became slightly more complex as the night went on but it’s definitely a more approachable and modern style of wine that lacks Bordeaux character. Good.

Quite concentrated color. In the bouquet a bit reticent and dusty cassis, but that is probably because the wine was popped and poured. Also lush oaky and tobacco flavors. On the palate beautiful juice, cassis, a touch of sweetness and beautiful oak. The tannin is still firm and for the vintage the wine has a very good concentration. Will probably be at its peak around 2015 and later.

Was having a rack of lamb for my B-Day and decided a bordeaux would be perfect (and it was). PnP and revealed a nose of dark fruits, earth, spice, oak and some licorice/graphite. Hard as nails for the first 30+ minutes with some bitterness and harshness. Started to open and mellow at about the 1 hour mark and was drinking great after 1 1/2 hours. Took on lots of body and ripeness and performed like a big cabernet for a while. Settled down after about 2 hours and became super smooth with impeccable balance, excellent complexity and a long, slightly fruity finish. Very elegant and polished after a couple of hours and a terrific example of a very good bordeaux. Excellent now and likely to be even better in another couple of years.

Beautiful, slightly mature garnet, dense. Closed. Dark berries, earth, some cassis, rather dense nose. Still purple with red rim. Not closed but nose dominated by the pencil shavings, cedar and graphite thing. Same in the mouth, although it has a couple of bitter notes that softened after a couple of hours. Medium tannins and acidity (could have done with more). a lot of good descriptive notes on this wine... the wine's aromatics take some time in the decanter to come around and become more typical... structurally the wine is not as lush and inviting as is typical of Cos lately and is more defined by firm, barely ripe tannins and moderate + acidity... balanced wine with good length, great intensity, very good complexity at this stage... wine has finesse now but will acquire more with time, a firm but fine texture, and very good expression of place. Clearly not at its peak, for that give it another 3-5 years, but drinking well now.

what a great nose. consistent notes. I wish I had more of these left. Contrary to the wine press, I think 2002 Left bank is a very good vintage, certainly better than 2004, and perhaps 2003 (for St. Estephe at least)

Two hour decant. Inky black core- nose of violets, earth, cassis. Midpalate dry and gritty, rustic- black fruit- tongue coating finish. 90+ great potential but hold for now-tannins need to resolve.

Decanted over six hours. At first, reticent nose of dusty sour cherry and a darker, stewed-blueberry fruit note. over the next few hours, the nose remains consistent, but intensifies. The palate is initially thoroughly shut down, with a fairly faint note of earthy cherry to match the nose, but broadens fairly quickly to fragrant cherries, plums, blueberry pie filling and earth, the whole framed by persistent but harmonious tannins. Needs the decant, but rewards it handsomely.

Second wind of the night. Incredibly supple and smooth texture, with complex red berry, cherry, cassis, spice, and herb flavors intertwined with creamy vanilla and chocolate. Wonderful, and continued to evolve as we drank it.

Terrific after a lengthy decant. Pencil lead, mocha, dirt/forest floor, dark berries and currant. All in balance. The only thing giving away the vintage is an average finish and unremarkable persistence. Extremely impressive.

from memory nose - complex aromatic nose - tobacco, dirt, funk, some fruit mouth - plums, earth, licorice, other stuff that i cant remember. A slightly more austere showing that the 2001 Cos, which had more sweet fruit profile. The 2002 paired well with the cheese plate. Drinking well now and should be in its window for a few more years.

I purchased several bottles upon release, when I was drinking young tannic wines. Because of my impatience, I opened one immediately (2004), but it was too green to enjoy. This vintage hasn’t aged much since then.
Upon opening, there’s not much on the nose, and the wine displays gripping tannins. The initial mouth feel is chalky; no glycerin/glycerol. After about an hour, the tannins settle down and it becomes smoother (but not silky). The fruit was barely perceptible. Maybe dark fruit, maybe currant. I also sensed some oak. I agree with other reviewers that the wine has its best years in front of it – maybe 10 more years in the cellar. But who knows if the tannins ever will be in balance with the fruit.
I prefer the ’96, then and now. In a few years, maybe it'll be a different story. The minimum drinking window for the 2002 vintage should be 2015.
No score at this time.

Had this during a dinner featuring a number of wines, mostly new world. This stuck out with a balance that nothing offered earlier. Nice dark fruit, good acidity, alcohol in check, sweet tannins, decent finish. Lighter in body than I expected, was a solid offering that I think is still young and has its best years ahead. A diamond in the rough for a generally panned '02 vintage. I wish I had given it a better stage to shine, oh well, no score due to a bit of palate burn, just impressions.

WLTV Tribeca Grill Offline 5.24.10 (Tribeca Grill NYC): Very aromatic. Nose of toasted oak, black currant, bell pepper and spearmint. Similar notes on the palate. Medium to full bodied. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium tannin and acid. Medium long finish. Very well balanced overall.

Bought on release. Beautiful evocative nose on opening, deeply colored, heavy in the glass. A lush mouthfeel is driven more by the density and glycerin of the wine, as the fruit is pretty, if just a touch lean (especially when compared to the fruit driven vintages in 2003, 2005, 2009), which gives the wine a nice tension, and interesting complexity from leather, spice and minerality. Very good length. Some excellent values in 2002, keep them around!

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, St. Estephe (Rodwell House): Deep, black-red colour; aromas of spice, toasty oak and chocolate. Feels open and approachable. Full-bodied, the entry is rich and opulent, balanced by a medium+ acidity and secondary flavours of chocolate, coffee and mocha, whilst the fruits are more dried like Xmas cake, fig and even raisin. A fairly powerful wine but not massive, the mid-palate has a solidity and grip through to the ripe fruit tannins. Medium to long finish, I thought it might be 02 or 04. Some good depth and layers of complexity, yet slightly extracted on the finish with a slight heat. Long winding finish.

Nose is very tight and concentrated. Sophisticated and very classic bdx elements none the less; oak, cedar box, pencil, tobacco, quite dominant coffee element, ink, coal
Way too much acidity, closed on the palate, massive tannins, sour cherries, chewing tobacco, chocolate, coffee.
Very tight, too young to drink, but it is still an elegant and serious wine. When ready will surely by a great wine and representative for its origin.

Nose of blackcurrent, tar, graphite and liquorice. In the mouth, the fruits are not very present and the wine is till astringent. Tanins do not have any vegetal aspect, but they are still quite young. The wine needs to age at least another 5 years.

Suave and sophisticated and typical of '02, obviously well made wines with aromas of cocoa and blueberries, eucalyptus and mist, fairly tart on the finish with extremely well integrated tannins. When the acid dissipates a little more the silkiness of the wine should be more transparent, I would give it 2-3 or more years before opening one but its certainly tasty enough right now. Decanted for 45-60 minutes before drinking and consumed over dinner for 2 hours.

Dark and inky. Nice luxuriant fruit on the nose, but not overpowering. Black fruit and licorice, but again restrained, in a left bank sort of way. Classy effort. I would love to sample this again in 10 years, as the tannins need to integrate further. Promising.

decanted, light sediment. great nose, dark ruby, sweet red fruits, asian soy spice, cassis, leather and a slight pleasant green streak. The oak is of very high quality but seems a little dominan on the finish. tannins seemed polished and resolved. drinking well now, but will keep. This is no blockbuster, but a rather a well-made delicious traditional tasting Medoc.

Popped-and-poured, unfortunately. Nose of creme de cassis. On the palate, completely shut down, acid and tannin masking what feels, primarily from texture and mouthfeel, like some very plush fruit. I'll wait at least a year before I try another.

Enjoyed this. In a pretty good spot. Light bodied (relatively), but good fruit with some coffee, cedar and tobacco. Somewhat tannic still on the finish, will be interesting to see if the fruit holds on longer than the tannins.

I actually managed to hang on to this bottle for nearly 3 years since drinking the first of two that I had purchased and the extra time made quite a difference. Decanted for about an hour prior to drinking. Shows a nice note of cigar box, old leather, red currants and just a touch of spice. Quite a complex and mouth-coating palate experience with dark fruits and lots of grip from firm tannins which are starting to integrate nicely. No need to rush this one but if you must, give it a quick decant for an hour or two and you'll surely enjoy it.

This is a great young Cos. The nose is starting to open and show a wine that seems better than when tasted just after release. The classic Cos aromatics are in place with dark red fruit, Cinammon, allspice and clove intermixed with classic Bordeaux Autumnal aromas. The palate is compact and needs time to develop but one gets the sense of ripe, classic fruit that is just a tad austere at this state. The finish is balanced and the tannins are rich for the vintage which seems to be getting better in bottle.

The Wine Summit 2007: Château Cos d'Estournel - Saturday, June 2, 2007 - afternoon: Dark ruby – bit fuzzy – thin rim; light pleasing nose – scented – berries with a floral edge; ripe berry fruit – black currants – light tannins but they ride along with the fruit; elegant styling; finishes with the fruit and tannins. A pleasing wine to drink. We also drank this at the Thursday evening BBQ and at lunch on Friday.

Took the bait from the eBob discussion that this was 'ready'. It is not. However, this is was very nice. Decanted 2.5 hours. Very dark in color. Lots and lots going on aromatically. Dark fruits and cassis, leather, minerals/graphite and other high-toned aromas that I can't put a label on (espresso, spice, vanilla?). Palate is dominated by tannins at the moment, but there is loads of fruit, linear acidity and minerals which are all in great balance. Was much tamer with the filets, but I would wait 5-10 years to let this come together.

Dark, almost black. Very powerful and full-bodied. It didn't perform as well as it could have. Much more open on day two. Lacking complexity at the moment. This will be outstanding in the future without a doubt but it needs a lot of time to come around. At $60 this is quite the find considering its obvious potential. Most people at the tasting guessed 2003 due to the power. 89+ for now.

Dark garnet to purple in color. Nose shows cassis, coffee, tar, and a hint of citrus. On the palate, cassis, mocha, earth, tar, and significant tannins combine to make a sustantial flavor profile. This took about two to three hours to open up a bit. Good potential and enjoyable now with air.

Opened with the 2001. Also deep purple with a reserved nose of spice, cassis, ceda. A little more alcohol on the nose than I expected. Palate with mouthfilling berry and cassis flavors. A touch of bitterness at the end. Not off putting, but present. Moderate finish with more noticable tannin. This was a nice wine, but not up to the 2001. Of course it is a year younger, but already the '01 is much more expressive. Better on the second night.

Lots of cool menthol greated my nose and tongue. Twisted with cedar and some graphite and the vestiges of fruit from a diluted vintage. This is not a wine that will benefit from further cellaring and would be a bottle to drink near term.

1/21/2018 - tcosgriff Does not like this wine:

Still plenty of solid tannic structure, some brightness from the acid, very pretty currant fruit doused in wet leaves, leather, tobacco. Silky, starting to show elegance. My least favorite vintage of the night, which is saying something, because this wine is beautiful.

Drink it for pleasure now, or age it for more complexity.

This St. Estephe has a sweeter profile - more blueberry than currant. Very pleasant, but not too interesting. Medium finish. A little acidic at first but mellowed out after a few hours.

Rich and ripe, but also restrained and very classic, with cassis, cigar box and sweet spice to the fore. Sophisticated and complex, with deep reserves of resonant, powerful flavour and a long elegant finish. Highly rewarding to drink - and drinking very well now, both fresh and mature.

Excellent now and likely to be even better in another couple of years.

a lot of good descriptive notes on this wine... the wine's aromatics take some time in the decanter to come around and become more typical... structurally the wine is not as lush and inviting as is typical of Cos lately and is more defined by firm, barely ripe tannins and moderate + acidity... balanced wine with good length, great intensity, very good complexity at this stage... wine has finesse now but will acquire more with time, a firm but fine texture, and very good expression of place. Clearly not at its peak, for that give it another 3-5 years, but drinking well now.

Drunk as part of a vertical tasting with FWS of the 1990, 2001 and 2002. This was the least impressive of the night, though still delicious. I shall probably leave my remaing bottle for a few years before trying again.

Fantastic after 3 hours in the decanter -- good vibrant fruit on the nose and a wonderful long, dry, tannic finish with loads of tobacco, leather and spice.

Windy City Wine Tasting (Lincoln Park, Chicago): Best of the tasting - decanted 14 hours. Immense depth and quite popular.

Decanted. Dark ruby color. Bright black raspberries, bitter chocolate, leather & tar. Clean, structured wine, though a bit astringent. Some tannin to resolve. Very good young Bordeaux that needs time. 91+

Popped and checked to see if decanting was needed. It was not needed. Dark purple color, fairly exctracted. Nose of new French oak, cassis, wet stone. Awesome nose, no hint of alcohol. In the mouth, smooth, low acidity, up front fruit, fine tannins. Great balance. Outstanding super second. Best Bordeaux to date for me. 94+

Bordeaux Blind (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Ruby purple. Fresh flowers, red fruit, some minerals, pleasant but somewhat reticent. Comments: Clearly a disappointment, this wine very well may be closed. Not recommended, for now.

Bordeaux Blind (Wine Exchange in Orange, CA): Dark garnet. Earthy nose is fairly complex but is followed by a let-down of a midpalate. Seems to be shutting down, palate-first.

Very tannic. Even when decanted for 4 hours. Nose still very closed. Powerful maskuline taste of espresso, tobacco and licorice. Good potential here. Leave for another 5 years.

Nose was a little closed, even with decanting. Some fruit and a little oak but tannins seem to dominate. Needs much much more aging but I think everything will eventually shake down well.

Garagiste 2002 Bordeaux Tasting (Garagiste Warehouse, Seattle, WA): Very dark in glass. Nose somewhat closed, but seemed to open a bit after 2-3 hrs into the event after revisiting later. Aromas of black fruits, coffee, graphite, cedar. Palate had sort of a wonderful spicy blackberry and cassis. Moderate tannins overall. Quite nice. My #5 overall.
