Dark red-purple color; dense appearance. Muted aromas of dark fruit. Muted flavors of dark fruit, but difficult to distinguish individual flavor components. "Hot" and tannic, with somewhat gritty mouthfeel. (This was a wine I should have consumed 10 years ago. It was still drinkable, but mostly dead in terms of its aroma and flavor components. Mea culpa.)
Underwhelming. Felt flat and didn’t hold my attention very long. I thought perhaps my expectations were too high and I wasn’t being objective, but when I went back to it the next day with lower expectations, it was still not very interesting.

Some barnyard, secondary fruit, lead, cedar notes balanced with tannin & acidity decently integrated with a medium finish. Good, not great. I don't think there is benefit in hanging onto these but the end isn't imminent.

This bottle received a good decanting immediately before serving. The cork and wine were in good shape, there was a modest amount of sediment, the color was dark and rich. The wine was sublime with a lot of ripe mature fruit and a good balance of tannin and fruit. It was polished and a pleasure to drink. Very nice. I expect this vintage may last longer but it is very good right now.

Dead. Tasted over 3 days and left to slow-ox in bottle in fridge (taking out each day for a couple hours to warm to cellar temp). Cranberry and red currant. Acidic. Absolutely no cassis or cedar - just the rubber tire (which is gorgeous in the ‘82). Absolutely no improvement over 3 days. Really ticked off as I bought this at the chateau, in 2008, and cellared throughout at around 13°C. Did I cook with this? Nope. Drain pour.

This bottle was decanted twice. Like the other bottles I have reviewed, the cork was sound and there was a lot of sediment. The wine was in good shape and a pleasure to drink over two days. Although this vintage seems like it will last longer, its nice now and I don't see a lot to be gained from holding further.

During a structured tasting session. Good tertiary aromatics here, but the wine was a bit too sinewy for my liking, while 2001 is showing well, often the mid palate is on the thin side.

Powerful yet still tannic Pauilac: pencil shaving, vanilla, tobacco, cassis, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke, mushroom, medium to full body, strong long finish. Wining with Bss and Derk.

This bottle was double decanted about three hours in advance of serving. The cork was in decent shape and the wine looked, smelled, and tasted good upon opening. There was a lot of sediment. I can't add anything to all of the posted tasting notes. The wine was a pleasure to drink, and the vintage appears to have some remaining life.

Decanted for a good hour and well worth it. A year and a half since we had this before ( Papies 92) and continues along the path of beauty. Classic , elegant, proper Pauillac austerity , good secondary evolution but far from reaching its peak on that front . This is a beautiful wine , with a good 20 years in the tank and we are ever so happy to have 7 more bottles. 92-93

Tasted next to 2001 Gruaud Larose. Less evolved in terms of colour, still very dark throughout. Expressive nose, dark fruit, floral notes, graphite, spices, tobacco. Approachable on the palate with noticeable, but unobtrusive tannic structure, bright acidity, good fruit. Vibrant finish, good length. Really good. Drink or keep. 92-94

Back in 2003 I bought 3 cases of this wine and have steadily been drinking it on occasions like birthdays and Christmas. This week I will be opening two bottles, this one and then another with my wine class in celebration of another year on earth.
I'm shocked at the color of this 21 year old- medium ruby, with a touch of bricking. I could call it garnet but it still shows youth in the glass. The nose is stunningly mature yet still gives off aromas of some primary fruit. Blackberry, cassis, leather, tobacco, mint, rose water, black plum, vanilla- the list could go on. It is so complex and earthy. The palate is dry with quite a tannic grip on the forefront. Medium (+) acidity makes for a sour note on the initial attack. As the wine warms on the tongue I get all the primary, secondary and tertiary flavors I picked out on the nose with a helping of sour cherry to keep it sharp. The wine is medium (+) bodied and is a comfortable 13% ABV. The finish is medium (+) in length and tapers to mainly tertiary flavors, the fruit running out of steam early. The sourness and acidity make it a mouthwatering wine that begs to be drunk. This is by far my favorite label. I paid $60 back in the day for one bottle that now runs $200. I would says it is at peak and has another 3-5 years left. It deserves more than the 90 points it got originally. I would say it is a 92 pointer and I have to go with 5 stars. Pairings would include any manner of meat, cooked in pretty much any style. Love this stuff.
Smoke, cassis, pencil lead complex bouquet. This medium-bodied dark fruit flavored is surprisingly fresh at this stage with mild tannins in the aftertaste. More than adequate grip and concentration in the mid-palate, this Bordeaux will hold and possibly evolve for 3-4 more years. This is a very attractive 2001 vintage that has held up very well.

This pours medium ruby with light bricking at the rim. The nose is of charcoal, grilled beef, sweet cedar, dark cherry, old leather, and celery seed. The palate is medium in tannin and medium in acid and some of the structure is marked by just a little of the new oak astringency. The finish lingers pleasantly. Quite a nice wine, though delivers perhaps a little behind expectations.

Took about an hour an a half to start opening an revealing itself. I drank it five hours after being opened. U should def taste in between that window to see when it is at its prime. Nice finish for sure. Would love to have more. At the right price. Nose was beautiful an it hit the pallet pretty gently but could dEf benefit from some more bottle age.

Drinking similar to one year ago. Nice, elegant integrated fruit, nose of strawberries, hay and currents. Feels lighter in the mouth than expected, anticipated a heft that was not present.

Decanted for a good hour. Andreas who had this blind struggled to place it calling it a 2000 Pauillac at the end saving some of his pride for calling 1996 Lagrange (Papies 93) a cote rotie. Has a decent richness to it but also an austerity and shyness on the nose and really needs to develop a more secondary side to it to climb the points ladder. Very solid and elegant still but needs a more expressive side. 92

My friend Jimbo is in town and I promised him some good wine. Back in 2003 I bought three cases of this stuff and now I am opening bottle #26, having tasted the evolution over the past 15 years or so. This was a spectacular example of perfectly aged Bordeaux. It is at peak right now, showing layers of tertiary fruit, rich cassis, gentle acidity and soft tannins. Balanced perfectly with a sublime mouthfeel. I’m super happy with the results of my patient cellaring. I believe this cost me $59 back in the day, now it will run over $100. A good deal if you ask me that gets 92 points and 5 stars. Probably need to think about the rest of the case as I don’t think there is much left in the tank with this claret. Here are my class notes. Salut….
Chateau Lynch Bages 2001, Pauillac, France 13.0% ABV
Appearance- Deep garnet Pronounced nose of dried blackberry (Cassis), leather, earth, tobacco, cedar, forest floor. Fully developed. Palate- dry, medium (-) acidity, medium (-) tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, pronounced flavors of dried blackberry (cassis), tobacco, leather, forest floor and charred wood. Long finish. Conclusion- outstanding quality, drink now: not suitable for aging or further aging.
From magnum. Once again proving that 2001 on the left bank is a Bordeaux vintage that outperforms expectations, this LB was text book perfect with everything you expect in a great Bordeaux. Fruit, some tar, leather, good finish, chewy color heading into brick. Perfect match for grilled steak. Wish I had more.

Phil in Town; 6/25/2021-6/26/2021 (Matts House): In a really good space. Cedar, bay leaf, and dark fruits. Very polished and very round on mid palate. Not decant time as pulled after 3 corked bottles in a row of other wines.

A fine claret in gradual, graceful decline. It’s really a very classy wine, fully resolved and self confident. The fruit is largely gone but the acidity and tannins ensure this just delightful. I’d suggest this had a few more years close to peak.

Not quite what I was expecting. Red to granite in colour, dusty sediment. Aromas of smokiness, drying berry fruit, cassis, leather, spices, garrigue/herbs. Barely medium bodied. Acidity is still good, with a slight tanginess of the fruit still hanging around. Cassis, plump ripe plums. Dusty chalky mouthfeel. Drying but not overpowering tannins …. more in the background now. Not a big or imposing wine. More calm, subtle, elegant. Touch of flintiness on the finish. Longish finish.

It's easy to underestimate the quality of such a light to medium weight wine. Nose is gentle blackcurrant and violet with bramble on the palate. There's a good tannic backbone and decent finish. Enough charm to make it an enjoyable and good wine for a lesser vintage.

While the aroma and palette were both quite enjoyable, the body had diminished to light-med and the finish has become quite short. Still not overly oxidized but not what it has been in years past.

Decanted for a good hour and frankly lost some of its umph in the process. Not sure what more to say here but after having a great bottle ( Papies 93) the rest have been wobbling 91-92s and missing the spot fo greatness who have come to expect from this great wine estate. Actually their 2006s and 2007s are drinking superbly now. 91 this time

Decanted for 30 minutes and a much needed endeavour. The nose was so pretty, classic, elegant and full of aroma and was probably the highlight of the wine. We have had mix results with this great wine and we feel it needs a decent decant at this stage to really develop on the palate. Trust us it will not fail even on a pop n pour situation but needs its time to hit its full stride. Lots of life here. 91-92

Well put together. Don’t see any improvement to come (unlike say Giscours 2000) but a good drop. Needed 45 mins in decanter which did it a huge credit. See earlier for blending. Will last a few more years in tip top condition but why wait? Middle of the road and safe. Worth the current money? Only with Brucie Bonus discount code. Enjoyed it though.

Summer grilled lamb paired very well. A wine from Bordeaux-showed some finesse, soft fruit rather than a bomb, age has made the tannins very light. This bottle seemed to have 5-10 more years at this level.

This definitely needs decanting to open up on the nose , a good 30-60 minutes will be very rewarding. Light sediment too. Post that sit back and enjoy the show of elegance. Its a lovely example of a well made Pauillac 19 yrs young. The nose is textbook and on the soft side, the fruit is very much present and healthy but also with that austere side ( vs the more juicy St Juliens for example) and restrained side. The tannin is soft almost silky and the wine is in total harmony. A proper wine that will put a smile on classic BDX lover face, every time. 92-93
Mid-weight, cedar box, blackberries, hint of caramel, a generous and gracious wine. I would peg this on the early side of full maturity. Further improvement is not out of the question. On the other hand, it is lovely now.

This bottle was purchased on release and properly stored. When opened the cork broke apart even though I used an Ah-So to assist. However the wine seemed fine with good color and initial aroma. The bottle was double decanted. the wine opened up and was very enjoyable; mature but with good remaining fruit and not too old. The remainder was quite good the next day. I think it good to drink this vintage now but I also think it is no immediate danger if kept a while longer.

From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this deep garnet wine retains plenty of red fruit and is a joy to drink. A blend of 78% Cabernet Cauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, it accents its fruit with notes of tobacco, tapenade, savory herbs and lavender. Medium-bodied and without any heat from its 13.0% alcohol, it delivers its flavor payload in a milieu of supple tannins and nicely integrated oak. Solid on the mid-palate and finishing medium-to-long, this is a high achiever for the 2001 vintage. Comparably cellared bottles should easily reach their 25th birthday. Drink now-2026.

My last bottle from this vintage. Opened, but not decanted for 30 minutes at a NYC restaurant. Had this alongside two other older Bordeaux wines. The 1995 Ausone and the 1990 Pichon Longuevulle Comtesse de Lalande. This was my favorite of the 3. It had the most fruit left and some nice balance. Not great, but very good.

Its been a good 6 years since we tried this last (Papies 93) and this was exactly what we expected. Proper class here, effortless almost, classic and super well made. Well evolved fruit, earthy feel to the wine, soft leather and cedar touches but still good level of healthy fruit and a vibrant feel. This is a world class singer that delivers without any need to scream or overtry. 93+

Fully mature, I feel the wine is at the beginning of a very gradual decline, and should really be consumed over the next couple of years. The nose is its best feature with deep aromas of blackcurrant and cedar. The palate does not really lives up to its initial promise, and while well balanced it is a little harsh with tannin. Likewise the finish is over tannic and on the short side.

[Magnum] The nose here is the gateway drug that can get people into Bordeaux, or even real wine more broadly. That isn’t to say that it spellbinding or magic in absolute terms, but rather a staple old classic, distinctly Lynch, distinctly Pauillac, reference middle-tier Bordeaux. Damp earth and leathers, chocolate covered cherries, dense blackberry fruit. Terrific earth influence that mostly blows down after 90+ minutes in the decanter, then shows super lush black and blue berry. Actually got this magnum in Bordeaux in 2014, and it delivered the classic drinking experience. Flickers of development in the right spots but mostly youthful. Thrilled with how approachable it was but one can clearly make out the blueprint for modern Cabernet here. The strongest 92+...

Dark ink color with mature brown meniscus. Classic earthy nose, barn hay and a touch of manure, along with very ripe grapes. Smooth mouth feel, palate is a bit bland, probably past its prime. Tannins are minimal, but very complex including leather, over ripe blackberries, minerals, and a touch of eucalyptus. Extremely long finish, mainly the ripe grapes and touch of minerals.

First bottle from a mixed case bought en primeur from the wine society. Mild blackcurrant nose carrying through to the palate and long finish. Light to medium bodied with plenty of softish tannins. A well proportioned wine that is exactly what you’d hope for from a lesser vintage. Was never going to be a good QPR. Drink over the next few years.

A generous gift. Enjoyable but had hoped for a little more to be honest. Nice enough but not memorable. Agree with others it will hold at this level for several years but unlikely to get better. Can think of better wines, better vintages with better QPR to pair with a steak.

Aged Bordeaux night at a NYC restaurant. We had: 2012 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg, as a starter, followed by, in order, 1995 Tertre Rôteboeuf, 2001 Château Lynch-Bages, 1986 Château Gruaud Larose, and then ended with 2001 Château Rieussec.
A clunky finish (out of balance?) made the Lynch come in behind the other two Bordeaux for me. The rest of the group liked it better than I did. Still a really good wine, and it probably has years ahead of it.

I feel the wine has reached its plateau for drinking, but has the composition to stay at this level for the next decade. The nose is deep with blackcurrent and cedar. The initial promise is not fully matched on the palate as the tannin has stayed quite gripping, but showing a decent depth. The finish is its Achilles heel, being short and displaying a lingering sourness. An hour in the decanter is recommended.

From the oenotheque machines at Hedonism in London. This was a pleasant surprise. Typically don’t like my Bordeaux to be that young, but this was drinking very well. Some black fruits, some acid (the good kind), some cigar. Very fresh and well integrated. If I was being picky might say lacking a touch of the character that old wines seem to get, but still quite nice.

Xmas Eve 2017: out of a wine fridge (temperature: 50 F), approx. 20 minutes decanted at room temperature; purple crimson color; started with intense cinnamon and cedar aromas in the nose and mouth, next sip both flavors faded a bit into the background and revealed red and black berries (especially strawberry and blackberry), chocolate, bread and some coffee; some slightly snappy and bitter tannins on the palate; light/medium body; restrained, round texture; medium finish.
Aroma/flavorwise the 2001 Lynch Bages was outstanding. However, the austere texture and restrained body weren’t fully fitting to the promises the nose delivered. Don‘t think the wine can improve further but will stay another 10 years on the given level, good storage conditions provided. 90-91 points.

Decanted and let breathe 90 minutes before I drank the first glass. Solid bouquet of cassis, currant, cherry, & vanilla, with tobacco leaf developing over time, on top of faint notes of leather & earth. Beautiful ruby color, but minimal legs. Plenty of cherry & currant fruit on the palate, with smooth tannins and balanced acidity. There was some cassis on the middle palate. The fruit continued into the medium-long finish, becoming more tart, with oak and vanilla completing the experience. This almost-full-bodied Pauillac exhibited some minor complexity within a well-defined structure. Do not hold this one much longer. I enjoyed this 2001, but would have preferred a bit less oak in the finish - though this is not an issue if paired with cheese or other foods.

Nicely rounded harmonic wine with just a little hollowness in the middle palate that prevents a higher score. This can be drunk now with pleasure but will last for years to come. Will it improve from here? Hard to tell, but We'll just have to wait and see.

Entering into maturity it is definitely ready to drink. The nose gives aromas of blackcurrent and cedar, with good firm resolved tannins on the palate. Good initial depth in the mouth does seem to fade somewhat leaving a rather clipped finish. However, a very pleasant wine starting to drink at its peak but not one to be laying down for future evolvement.

What a wonderful winery that makes superlative wines year-in and year-out. Only a Fifth Growth? Really? It was perhaps a little thinner and less unctuous than some of the better vintages; however, all the layered complexity and classic Bordeaux bouquet that I associate with Lynch Bages were there. Aided immensely by being paired with the later courses of a multi-course meal at a fabulous new restaurant in Seattle called Eden Hill.

Drank from 6L imperial. Medium ruby color and medium bodied with a freshness driven by a backbone of acidity, this "non-hyped" 2001 vintage is turning out to be way better than advertised. Classic Paulliac nose with Cedar, black fruit, earth and gravel. On the palate cedar, black currant, blackberry, and lead pencil. Finish was not as long as I was hoping for, but persistent nonetheless. Very nice wine. Highly recommended and great QPR for vintage Bordeaux.

I was right off a Lynch Bages vertical tasting and this one wasn't in the same league. A nice drinkable bordeaux, light for Pauillac, but nothing exciting. I'm not a big proponent of getting a great wine in an off vintage. I'd rather get less of the great vintage.

Decanted 1 hour. Appearance still quite youthful with a medium/deep ruby core and pale rub rim. Nose shows rich blackcurrant fruit, cedar, lots of tobacco. Medium/full bodied, rich blackcurrant fruit, tobacco, very fine tannins, balanced acidity, expands into a dark-fruited, lightly savoury, very good length finish with a touch of smoke and vanilla. Excellent, with that touch of richness I associate with Lynch-Bages, drinking well but no hurry - may even improve a touch from here.

Can you believe that my previous matured L&B was drank twenty years ago? This bottle was opened eighteen hours before was served. It wasn't decanted. Bumbly St. Julien more than an ordinary Pauillac. Black as the deepest place in hell but it is not nothing more than of its lineage. With little wine in the glass, crimson tones prevail. Intoxicating lactic flavors (mainly forest-yoghurt and soft butter) blend with mild peppermint and balsamic eucalyptus smells. All with elegance, without abruptness. A perfume. Palate is less dense than I expected but still its texture leaves a velvet step. It preserves acidity, tannins are already tamed and it does not have an excessive length. Those are the signs of the age for this vintage without a single note of astringency, veggie either. Wonderful. A nice surprise to finish the year. It ain't over until the fat lady sings...

Part of the 1990-2005 Vertical Tasting. Although this wine was very good, it really didn't stand up the competition of any of the other years in the tasting. I don't think this wine will have as long of a life of good drinking years as any of the others. It has fairly strong spice tones, and seems to already showing some recession in the full, rich fruit that is the basis coming out of the vineyard for all Lynch-Bages.

A very good and now aged & mature 5th growth Pauilliac bdx from one of the vineyards that define this region. Hard to comment on a QPR with the wide range of bdx prices - a fair QPR at our acquisition price. Very mature and ready to drink but under proper cellaring conditions still has at least a good 5 years to go - not youthful any more but enough balanced tannins & acid left for more time. Not sure how much further upside there is with further cellaring though - totally ready to drink now and would recommend starting to drink up any remaining holdings soon. Surprisingly lightly sedimented, purple with orangy tint and bricking present, soft mouth feel, medium - full bodied, very well integrated and a reasonable aftertaste. Very strong initial barnyard funk which blew off relatively quickly with a 1 hour decant and this could easily have taken more air in the decanter - 2 members of our group initially thought it was a bit corked but this impression was completely gone by the end of the bottle. Once the barnyard blew off a beautiful somewhat muted floral nose of dark cherry, cassis, dark stone fruit and a hint of allspice emerged. Regionally typical flavor profile of initially balanced oak, cassis, black fruit and dark cherry with more earthy, leathery and smokey flavors on the late palate and aftertaste. Definitely recommend this wine but as noted above I would recommend starting drinking up the holdings.

Birthday wine with beef burgundy. Outstanding together. A deep garnet color with a bit of bricking starting to show up on the edges. Perfectly balanced in the mouth right now with fully resolved tannins and a supple feel. Nose a bit tight with dark berries and cedar. A fairly mature and complex taste, but no predominant flavors really jumping out. A bit of subtle leather. I don' personally think this one is getting any better. I'd drink up.

Clear crimson in the glass. Some red berry fruit coming through on the nose, raspberry and cranberry. Missing the Pauillac / Lynch signature of earth backed power and masculinity. Obviously too young right now, but underwhelming nonetheless. Seems thin and tired already. Sadly the restaurant was out of the '96... this bottle wasn't even close.

During a Pauillac themed wine tasting dinner. Decanted for 1h. Dark ruby. Discrete nose of dark fruit, forrest, cedar. Very young still with little tertiary aromas. On the palate this is nerveux with a lot of positive tension. Medium bodied, clean fruit and acidity. Tannins still young as well. Good Pauillac. This bottle was really early in its drinking window only.

Overtones of pure elegant perfume, this wine has an incredibly floral bouquet. Undertones of age - leather, lead pencil shavings, dried blackberry, hay and decomposed brick wood. Structure show great density but with a soft touch and ripe tannins. This wine is starting to drink very nicely now.

Decanted for 3 hours plus. Typical Medoc nose, palate improves with airing comprising dark berry and possibly damson, and 24 hours later, a suitably dry finish. This was one of my better purchases when a 2001 Medoc was offered almost free if I wanted 1998 and 1999. 2001 though lighter than some other vintages has considerably improved with time in the barrel and bottle and now outperforms other vintages that lack longevity.

This takes about 2h to open up properly but then a complex nose of spices, leather, chocolate, figs turns up. Smooth tannins, leather, tobacco, earth and the fruit somewhat in the background. Dry, but not austere. Some heat on the mid palate and finish (on opening which then fades away). On balance I might sound negative but this is really a lovely wine with a long persistent finish. Good drinking now but will keep. 92-93p

Textbook cedar and tobacco. A big and dark-fruited palate suits the strong body. Everything is well-balanced. Nice tannins elide onto the finish with a hint of oak flavors.

Cigar box and cassis aromas, with quite a deep, relatively full bodied mouthful of Pauillac blackcurrant and spices. It just lacks a little sparkle mid-section and the finish drops off rather, otherwise it would be very good indeed.

Amazing solidity of fruit and balanced tannins, with no sign of having aged too long. Every bi the grande dame we'd hope for after cellaring for 12years.
Starting to enter maturity with a lovely restrained fruit and good alcohol balance. Hints of tar, berry, spice and a lovely finish. To be savour from now for 5-8 years.

No decant. Extremely refined nose and great bouquet that just keeps on evolving. For a rather medium vintage this is a great accomplishment. Drink rather sooner than later.

Medium bodied, crisp, crunchy, bright red fruits on the palate. More interesting on the tobacco and cassis nose. There is a tart quality that is starting to develop in the finish. This is probably not going to to get better.

Decanted to remove sediment. Notes taken after two hours. Lovely perfumed notes of cedar, leather, and fruit on the nose. Cedar and sweet cherries on the palate. This is a lighter-bodied, elegant Bordeaux. In a nice spot right now and I doubt it will improve. Drink up.

2001 was always an undervalued vintage, especially after the mega-hype of 2000. I bought this in 2005 and it's been a bit of a bargain. Now with over 12 years of age this is lovely quality claret. Rich fruit and spices, tobacco etc on nose with no jamminess. Tannins still firm within a complex fruit and spice mix. Good length and balance. WoFW 16/20
Very nice- had taken a glass worth via Corovan weeks before. Held up just find. Decanted and had with steak. Lovely Nice tannin and fruit. Will last more years but showing well.

Really good surprise. Great deep ruby and immediately open and approachable. Classic LB tobacco and power but noticeable forward fruit profile as well. A really nice combination and only confirms my view that 2001 is a great vintage. Always been good from the outset whereas the 2000 are still very difficult and not well integrated and to me a sign that things are not as great as advertised!
Medium ruby red. Classic and exressive Bordeaux aromas. Earthy, distinctive, cigar-box flavors. This wine, while neither deep nor long, portrayed classic bordeaux flavor from a middling vintage.

maybe bad bottle or wine is shutting down. decanted for two hours . Fruits are mild, mostly leather, stone, slight musty, acidic, tannins are medium. I'll wait a couple of years to see if this hopefully improves
We added this wine at the end of the night as our meal was winding down to sample alongside a 94 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace and 89 Niebaum-Coppola Rubicon. I really enjoyed this wine even though I was getting tired.
Dark garnet in the glass and deep dark fruit on the palate. The wine was seemed to me to be very approachable and while not new world it has a more fruit forward style to it. Very well integrated flavors and excellent acidity make this a great wine to enjoy with either food or without.

Mid-deep garnet with browning edges, hugely perfumed with intense leather, cedar, mint and blackcurrant, although showing much more age than expected at 12 years. Mid bodied, red and dark fruit, fine grained tannins, savoury. Delicate finish and very, very long. Best to drink up now though.

Saftig, frisk syre. Svakt sursøtt preg i fininsh. Fin lengde med relativt bløte tanniner og noe innslag av pepper. Drikker bra nok, men trenger luft.

Drank at Davy's This needs a lot of time in the open to get the flavours out. It is ready for drinking with a good integration of the tannins. All the classic lynch notes. A little short on the finish.

Decanting advisable. Dark in colour, youthful and glossy. Full on fruit on the nose, light oak, youthful nose , open and fresh. Very nice nose. On the palate it feels within its drinking window, roundish but with good tannin which is starting to move to the silky front. For sure enjoyable at this stage and with good life ahead. A touch mild on the the mid palate and light on the finish but a very good wine nonetheless. 92-93 from us and a lot better than the last 2 time we tried it.
Thick legs. Purplish/brick orange hue with a garnet rim. Nose shows wet earth, cassis, peanuts and hints of chili. Medium structure with moderate layering. Tastes of berry jam, tobacco, mushrooms and spices. Quite acidic and thin tannins. Perhaps the wine has reached its prime or an off bottle? Either way, it was alright and I expected more.

Drank two bottles about a month apart with consistent notes. Wine never came together - tasted over several hours. Kept waiting for more, but tasted more of a bitter taste of grape skins without enough dark fruit to balance it. Hoping other vintages provide greater satisfaction.

Five Decades of Lynch Bages with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): Dark in colour, youthful. Quite reserved on the nose, with some oak by products such as coffee, mocha along with a light core of dark fruit. On the palate it is a bit on the easy side, very pleasant, great balance as with al LB wines. The tannin is still evident . Nicol said it very well about this wine, it is nice but doesn’t excite me at all. 90-91

Medium to full bodied; Very nice wine with plenty of ripe black fruits, sweet vanilla, tobacco and pepper. Really enjoyed the wine which matched very well with Argentinian steaks... Also had Cos d'Estournel from the same vintage (2001) during the dinner. The cos was more elegant, refined and balanced, while the Lynch Bages is more muscular and bold. I liked them both.

Lovely wine, developing well but no rush to drink soon. Nice texture, plump fruit, creamy oak and fine tannins. Blackberry, mocha and a little meatiness, only medium bodied and probably lacking the full complexity and depth of better vintages but still, very good drinking.

Judgement Day - 2001 Bordeaux vs. 2001 USA Cabernet Blends (Holiday Inn Chicago North Shore - Skokie, IL): Tasted blind. Interesting wine with a rustic nose but a somewhat modern palate. Had a really dusty nose with leather, dried roses and some charcoal...just lovely. The palate had a richer fruit profile, mostly rich red fruit with pipe tobacco, floral notes, and moderate tannin. I actually called this wine correctly as a Pauillac and ranked it 2nd out of 12 wines.

Another lovely bottle. Lots owhite pepper, leather, menthol, earth and sweet black fruit on the nose. Nice blanced of crunchy acid, sweet black fruit and some persistent tannins. Not the fullest bodied Lynch Bages, but a very pleasant drink and a great food companion.

Israel VS The World - Blind tasting (Wine Route Savion): Tasted blind. The original intension was to taste the '08 vintage "against" Castel Grand Vin '08, but because of a blessed mistake, we got the '01 vintage instead. It was an unfair match. Excellent wine, expressive and complex, with ripe fruits, farm and earthy smells on the nose. Medium bodied, good acidity and almost undistinguishable tannins. Mach complex and interesting than the Grand Vin.

I really liked this wine - fantastic juice - cassis, cedar, earth/mushroom on the nose - slight hints of meat. This wine was rich on the palet - no austere as I read in reviews. decent finish - not epic which is why I didn't give this a higher rating. Picked it up for $60 which I thought was a good deal - see it's selling for over $100 - and couldn't really justify that cost. Definitely has more time left - though I can't see it getting much better than it is.

Elegant, medium bodied and refined for Lynch Bages, at 11 years of age, it's already mature. Wet earth, tobacco, cassis, cedar, forest aromas and soft textures are in abundance. There is no compelling reason to hold this wine for further aging.

Sharp, spicy, and salty(?). I don't know why, but I couldn't get past that taste, and this lingered on for the whole night after 45 minutes of decanting and another 30 minutes to breathe in my glass. My co-taster said that 5% of all French wines he purchased turned bad. I bought this at the duty free shop in Hong Kong. Very, very tight, with a polished texture. Very dry fruit with hints of tobacco, and espresso, but I really could not come up with a fair assessment. We put this up against a 2001 Canon-la-Gaffeliere, and it could not put up a fight. Needs a re-taste.

Just read RP's rating of the LB vertical and decided I'd try the first of my half case of this wine -- and wow am I glad ~ this wine is drinking perfectly right now, not nearly as complex as some of the better LB's, but very good. Cassis, cedar, mineral and earth flavors, elegant structure, nicely balanced. Definitely drink now.

Informal wine lunch at Chateau Loreto. Somewhat reticent nose gives up cherries, other red fruit and a little bit of coffee and tobacco. This is a very elegant but light style of Lynch Bages - more St. Julien in style than Pauillac. Not a lot of fruit or complexity. Classic claret, but not a great Lynch Bages. Last tasted this wine about 2 years ago with consistent notes. I'm afraid that Parker got this wine right when he first reviewed it and I doubt this wine will surprise to the upside in coming years. Paid $32 on futures for this. See this now selling for $80-$120. Paying more than $50 for this wine is a waste of money.

I should probably be locked up for crimes against wines for this one, but there was a scant half-glass of the opened bottle left so this was grabbed from the cellar, popped and poured. Too cold and no standing time. Oh well...
Even at coca-cola temperature there is a lovely fresh minty nose here, with plenty of fresh blackcurrant fruit and a dab of licorice. Wow this really is cold! Will come back to it, but promising...
EDIT : After a few hours to come up to a respectable serving temperature this is showing well. A real mouthful of succulent blackerry and mint with a tiny green tingle at the back of the palate. Tannins still firm however and oak yet to fully work its way through. This is a wine that screams "Lynch Bages". Whether or not that is a good thing will dpeend on your personal tast but it's a fine example of the supple modern style. Not to say this is a shallow wine - the quality is evident and there is plenty of backbone and chewy green tobacco complexity - but for a Pauillac it's big, fruity and fun. Very nice, but another couple of years will help.

No decant. A good wine for an evening blizzard. Leather, white pepper, menthol and tobacco on the nose - none of the green pepper I often get on Lynch Bages. Still quite tight and young on the palate with persistent but not unpleasant tannins. Leather and black cherry fruit leading to quite a long finish. Went very well with a rich and salty pasta puttanesca.

ruby red with light brown tinge around the edges; aromas of black olives, cassis, damp earth, smoked game; medium body, fairly smooth and elegant style with red fruit and gravelly undertones; well-balanced and solid, just not all that powerful. Decanted 1/2 hour. Dark ruby red color. Wine benefited fom .5 hour decanting, but not sure would have not benefited from longer resting period. Nose of iron, graphite, barnyard, and muted raspberry & cherry scents. Taste is well balanced, soft & mellow tannins, tart raspberry and cherry flavors were present but slight, but iron and and barnyard were prominient and match prized bordeaux. Drink now.

Decanted 2.5 hours. Deep, nearly opaque, garnet-red color. Lovely nose of earth, tar, some barnyard-ish aromas, and ripe red fruit. Complete and seemingly mature on the palate with well-integrated tannin and good fruit throughout. Moderate, slightly tannic finish. It didn't have the power or complexity of bigger vintages but the balance was impeccable. To my taste this was a classic, mature Pauillac. Drank from Greg and Kathy's cellar in West Palm Beach to accompany cheese and Greg's homemade baguette.

Nice dark ruby color. Splash decanted before dinner. Still a little tight, but opened up over an hour or so. Very nice nose with a bit more red fruit than typical for Lynch Bages. Palate a bit light for LB, with notes of cherries and strawberry, slightly sweet but not cloying. A nice wine drinking well now, likely to improve over the next couple of years.

Tasted alongside the Haut-Bages at the winery. This is young and has nice freshness. Good deep nose and flavor profile. Earthy, olives, tar, cigar box and some good red fruit and maybe even some plum. While this had some nice depth on the palate, it was still wound rather tight and I was not overwhelmed by this. The finish was good but I expected better from this pedigree.

This wine was not decanted before serving but the bottle was opened at least an hour in advance. The nose had lots of French Funk. The wine initially was closed but there was potential for richness. We decanted the unserved portion of the bottle; some of the nose Funk disappeared and the wine opended up. As time passed this showed itself to be a very nice wine. Lesson learned - the wine needs a full decanting well in advance of serving. It may also benefit from some more time in the bottle.

Some good and some less good news...first the good news it has an extraordinary nose typical Lynch Bages,it tastes also like a good lynch bages...it is also already nicely evolved...just one remark it keeps a little light bodied and I think it will always remain light bodied...still very enjoyable to drink though...The latest news on the street is they say 2001 is better then everyone think(that's right),but some say it is better than 2000...I don't agree...I can remember plenty of Bordeaux 2000 tasted young that where faboulus, memorable(Chateau Armens,Tourelles de Longueville,Amiral de Beychevelle)...they just need some cellar time that's all...www.everyoneweb.com/chateaujochen

Lo-hei dinner with the monthly group (Canning Room, Grand Park City Hall): This was decanted for about a couple of hours. Still rather monolithic, but clearly a good wine, full of Pauillac power. Nose showed notes of vanilla weaving in and out of green pepper, grassy leaves, and rich, warm, earthy notes. Warm and rich are probably two words I would use to describe the wine actually. The palate showed plenty of drive and power, with full cassis and tobacco leaf flavours wed to clean acidity. First class finish with more cassis notes and bittersweet smokiness. Excellent, but just shaded by the 1996 Leoville Barton on the night - that wine had the benefit of 5 years more age though, I have no doubt this will be very nice in the next half decade.

Opened and poured two glasses which I allowed to sit for an hour, and then consumed over the next hour. A pleasant, useful Bordeaux, drinking nicely now, but not as strong an example of good value in 2001 as, say, Pichon Baron, among others. Good notes of cassis and blackberries, with softening tannins suggesting the wine is ready to drink and unlikely to reward extended cellaring in the way some other 2001s can.

After mixed reviews, I didn't expect much. But, this bottle showed very well. Plenty of firm tannins and acidity that make me think I opened this a few Christmas' too early. This could easily go another 5-10 years. Don't be in any hurry to open this. Drank with Tbones off the grill for a Christmas Dinner with Theresa. I wish I had more of these to enjoy over the next few years. Double decanted for sediment and aroma. It continued to improve over the course of 4 hours, Iwish I had decanted it earlier in the day.

Another fine example from the underrated 01 vintage! I double decanted this prior to dinner and found the nose intoxicating and the color a deep purple--very young in the glass with excellent pedigree and fine tannins. The fruit is wonderful and I would be inclined to enjoy these over the next decade--a fine acompaniment to the rib roast!

12.5%. Deep purple/ruby color. Familiar nose of cassis, licorice and raspberry. Medium body with softer tannins. Lush and pure. Good finish. Ready and very easy to drink, entering its early stage drinking window. Very similiar styled to 1999. Went well with pharma ham on pasta with white egg sauce, and steared ribeye on red wine source. Lynch Bages never failed me so far.

Before I open this bottle I knew that it was a baby to open...but since I opened a lot of 2001 bordeaux lately and they are all very lovely to drink right now I wanted to risk it...I loved it,it was nice to drink very smooth very soft and nice tannins...it is a very traditionally lynch bages.Because there was almost no nose and the fruit was a bit hidden I gave it 89 and not 90...better than the 1998 lynch bages though...

Lynch Bages is a very bold representation. The color is deep and inviting and the aroma rustic and earthy. A medium bodied wine that is tightly wound. Currant, earth, leather, dried black fruits. The finish is bold with course velvet and lingers with the hallmark of it's pedigre. Let this one age another 10+ years.

Mid Aug 2005: classic nose with cassis, pencil and cedar; plenty of tannins in the mouth; medium body.
Only for 2-3 years in bottle this is a very young wine and too early for a lasting verdict. It's time to reevaluate this wine in about 5 years when tannins will start to melt down.

Had this after the 99 Montrose, with spicy pork not decanted. Very nice fruit and smoke on the nose, very open, lovely red color. Medium ruby red. On the nose, aromas of plum, barnyard, minerals, and crushed walnut shells walnut shells early on, with new oak and fainter cassis strengthening with time in the glass. Surprisingly expressive and complex nose at this stage. In the mouth, a nice attack of ripe red fruit, with sweet tannins driving the finish. Nicely round and palate coating, even though this is a medium bodied wine. The only possible criticism of this wine, other than its medium weight and power, is the slightly simple character of the wine on the palate at this stage--the complexity is just not there to merit a really stellar score. Still, the components are all there and in fine balance, so I see no reason why this should not be drinking very very nicely in ten years. 90+.

The STG and Me take on 2001 Bordeaux (Susan's House, Seattle, WA): My favorite WOTN. Gorgeous perfumed nose. Asian spice and tea on the nose follow onto the palate, where thay are joined by sweet blueberries. A touch surmature and about as ripe as I want in a Bordeaux, but thankfully short of over-the-top. This was a half bottle tasted immediately and after 3 hours of decanting. Out of the gate this was all butter & oak. (I almost cried. Lynch Bages is a favorite of mine and I'd be devastated to see them start stuffing it full of oak.) After three hours of decanting there was still plenty of oak but the tell tale character of Lynch Bages began to poke through: Black fruits, leather, cedar and a touch of smoke. The tannins, acid and fruit were very well balanced and I believe there are enough tannins to absorb the oak over time. I'm not going to touch this for at least 6 years. Rating this is tough, 85 before the oak settled down, ( but then I don't like oaky wines.) I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt - it will easily be a 93 once the oak is integrated.

Clear, bright crimson, a little light colored. Oaky dark cherry nose, tangy and bright.
Bright, sweet oaky tannins. Bot complex. Short and a little light. Some soft herbs. Not very concentrated but pleasant, soft. Don't expect it to age well long term, drinkable now. C+/B-

Mea culpa.)

Nope. Drain pour.

Tasty but not phenomenal. Classic left bank notes of dark fruit, wood and tobacco. However, those notes are muted compared to the best vintages.
Drank with a 2011 Beaucastel which, replacing the tobacco with plum, held its own with this vintage of Lynch Bages.

Appearance- Deep garnet
Pronounced nose of dried blackberry (Cassis), leather, earth, tobacco, cedar, forest floor. Fully developed.
Palate- dry, medium (-) acidity, medium (-) tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, pronounced flavors of dried blackberry (cassis), tobacco, leather, forest floor and charred wood. Long finish.
Conclusion- outstanding quality, drink now: not suitable for aging or further aging.

Softer and elegant LB showing a nice maturity with complex notes of charcoal and tobacco on the finish. Years ahead of the '00 and better for drinking now although that vintage will ultimately crush this.

Complete and seemingly mature on the palate with well-integrated tannin and good fruit throughout. Moderate, slightly tannic finish. It didn't have the power or complexity of bigger vintages but the balance was impeccable. To my taste this was a classic, mature Pauillac. Lesson learned - the wine needs a full decanting well in advance of serving. It may also benefit from some more time in the bottle.

After three hours of decanting there was still plenty of oak but the tell tale character of Lynch Bages began to poke through: Black fruits, leather, cedar and a touch of smoke.
