Fragrant with violets, dark fruits, wet stone, dustiness, liquorice and underbrush. Body lighter than expected, rounded but still present tannins, good acidity. Nice Bdx, looks younger than its age.

9th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, not as strong a showing as last June's fab bottle, toasted oak flavours a bit too prominent, underlying class and attractive fruit, little upside now, but no rush. F (17.5).

Similar to previous bottle nine months ago. Mid to full ruby. Classic cigar box and tobacco nose. Densely silky with good mid red fruit, nicely balanced structure with elegant line. Decent finish. Classic Graves. Decanted 90mins but surprisingly little sediment in this bottle. Holds well over the course of the evening. ****

In 2002, 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot -5 % Cabernet Franc I pretty much completely agree with rayq's recent note. A difficult vintage and I think this shows. Slightly short, pretty obvious and lacking as ray writes 'classic claret qualities'. For me the Domaine de Chevalier white is definitely the better wine.

lovely bright garnet colour. On the nose some classic pencil lead and blackberry but also a hint of red fruit, in the sense of brightness of fruit. On the patate this is ready and resolved but there's a slightly offputting note of heat in the finish. Seems higher than the stated 13%. Also not particularly long.I was expecting a more classic claret and it has undershot that, it's a chateau I greatly admire so saying this with regret. Good but not great. I notice other notes from people I respect rate this higher so I look forward to checking the next bottle.

8th of 12, opened 30 minutes then decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, step up since last bottle in September 21, very lovely, fine attack, layering developing, proper Graves flavours, surprisingly fresh, upside yet, 20+ years. F+ (18)....... even more pleasurable than technical mark!

Pretty good for 2002 - an underestimated vintage (IMHO). PnP - Red fruit, dark meat on nose and palate. Fresh, but fleshy with pressure on the palate. No big change after a few hours nor on the next day. Very good, not great. Plenty of time ahead, no need to rush!

Tasted this wine at the Domaine de Chevalier Masterclass during the International Congress of Chinese Cuisine & Wine at the Goodwood Park Hotel.
Poured from an Imperial (6L) bottle.
Very mature and ready for consumption. Some green notes coupled with tobacco leaves, leather, sandal wood, and spice wood. Freshness and vibrancy, which was amazing after 20 years, is still evident, with blackcurrant.

Plenty of ripe red cherries at first, with some sour cherry coming next and an interesting blend of the two on the finish. I liked the bright acidity and tension a lot and on the first night, thought it was one of the best I have opened recently. On the second night, however, a rather unpleasant note of kirsch took over the finish. Still, overall much better than the last two 04s and I preferred it to the 00. For really long-term cellaring, there's a lack of substance as well as the usual earthiness, but it should be very good over the next few years.

I think this was the last one pre-Derenoncourt. If so, that could explain why the fruit is civilized, there is plenty of earthy Pessac in the background and it has a very classical feel to it. Still a little pinched and with some tannins, but very enjoyable. I will wait a little longer for the next one.

Absolutely exquisite aged claret showing just how good lesser vintages can become. Not especially dark, nor brown. Earthy, raspberry nose. Sweetness and delicacy on the palate without becoming frail. Good over 2 nights.

2+ hours of air in glass container. Drank over the next 2 hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherry, plums, blackberry, tobacco, green herbs, blackcurrant leaf, gravelly earth minerality. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), resolved medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of spicy green bell pepper herbs, blackcurrant leaf, blackberries, red cherries, plum, tobacco cigarette ash, gravelly earth minerality. Medium+ finish. Very good quality. On paper it may seem dilute and weak, but the overall effect is actually quite charming in a very old school traditional claret way. Time to drink up and enjoy.

Fully ready to go, the wine is medium-bodied, bright, crisp and focused on its red berries, forest leaf, cedar and tobacco character. This is a bit on the lean side. Fans of old-school classic Bordeaux will probably like it more than I did.

5th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, little changed from my earlier notes, last in December 16, very satisfying, glossy Graves, tad modern maybe, still fruit forward, more power but less complexity and grace than previous night's Haut Bailly 01, should continue to develop over next 15 years. F+ (18).

Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.
Outstanding! Perhaps the best bottle I have had in many months. Perfectly balanced, fruit perfectly pleasant, sweet tannins (a term I have not used in some time). Liquid sunshine.
This bottle reminded me of why I drink wine.
Decanted, but I think letting it breathe for a while would be enough.
I have three more, and I will be drinking them soon. Why wait?

Domaine de Chevalier Birthday lunch (McLeay Street Bistro, Potts Point): First obvious oak here, slight vanilla backed by cream, slightly unripe black and red currant, leather. Juicy, fleshy, tannins quite resolved though it's still surprisingly broad. Impressive considering the vintage.

Nicely evolved in terms of colour. Quite open on the nose, expressive but not overly complex. On the palate well balanced, but rather thin, a bit green and drying towards the finish. Bright acidity, peppery. Decent length. 88-90

Faded and dusty merlot black fruit, some spice, pepper and meaty notes on the palate. A lovely nose of cool, wet stone, leather, old wooden chest and a tiny bit of smoke. Very fresh with great balance and clearly very well made given the vintage. Delicious but stopping some distance short of greatness, I'm pretty certain this isnt worth the money. 92

Coravin fun - Bordeaux + ring in & Dom. de Chevalier (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. A youthful version of the 90 but with slightly more dustiness. Red berry compote, leather ,autumn leaves, cedar. In the mouth the wine is fleshy and savoury, juicy and, well, lovely. Balance of tannins, fruit and structure is near perfect. There are some savoury meaty notes here as well. Great effort in a shit vintage. Really nice.

Lovely wine in perfect window. My last note was spot on. Gave this 30mins in decanter and back to bottle. Initially a little funk, which blew off to leave a lovely sheen that I always seek in Bordeaux but rarely find. Got deeper with more air but not necessarily better. Excellent and pleasurable if not worthy of a higher score.

In the last year this has entered into the start of its prime drinking window, but needs a 6hr slow ox to remove the rustic 2002 tannins (see my previous notes, do not decant for long). Subtle spice and wood aromas, much less than strong vintages (no cedar or tobacco notes here) and palate is blackberry and coffee (rather than cassis) with less richness. However there is depth, a decent mouthfeel and the tannins are smooth (with a slow ox) although never sweet. Finishes a bit short and dry, but its all very correct and enjoyable. Should drink well to 2025, possibly improving to 2020 - there is enough fruit there.

Monthly Tuesday group #006: Bordeaux 2001 versus 2002 (By VD): In the quite luxurious bouquet dark berry fruits, cedar, vanilla and tobacco. On the palate a firm wine with dark berries, some green bell pepper and other green impressions, a firm dose of red fruit acidity and tight tannin. A bit harsh and although the overall impression is quite luxurious it is not in great harmony. Nevertheless a beautiful wine and no real hurry. 89 - 90

1st of 12, perfect cork and level, decanted an hour - deepish garnet, purple rimmed; classy bouquet, black fruit, bramble, earth, nail varnish; medium bodied, nice sweet core, glossy, nice mid palate but ends a tad short, decent ripe fruit, seems ready but does it flatter to deceive? Very good indeed (17/20).

Coravin fun - Dom. de Chevalier plus lunch (My place, parramatta, sydney): From Coravin. aromas of biscuit, toast, red berry, slightly earthy notes, brambly as well, perhaps some mushroom…quite autumnal…on the palate it's lightweight but integrated, balanced, with flavours of leather, biscuit, red berry, silky tannins, long. In a really good spot, for me.

Bright red/purple. Initially red currants on the nose. Increasingly smokey with time. Palate disarmingly soft and sweet in the context of the vintage. Very well integrated, lacking only a little complexity to be truly fine--but hardly less enjoyable. Nothing under-ripe. Classical with time in hand.

From Coravin. Aromas of red berry and plum fruit backed by plentiful pencil shavings, biscuit, graphite, cream and spice. With time tobacco, slightly meaty notes, cedar and leather. Lovely nose. In the mouth the wine is juicy and rich, spicy with flavours of liquorice, berry and plum and a slightly chalky tannic grip. It's quite broad on the palate with plenty of mid palate breadth. Nice.

13% abv. Light purple/ruby. Nose had an interesting mix of cinnamon, charcoal, red raspberries, dark chocolate and a hint of spearmint. Lighter bodied. Acidity makes this bright and fresh with tannins that will allow this to age many more years. Possibly my best purchase this year.

Consistent with my last note, but seems to work best with slow-ox. 6hrs was good. Deepened in glass after pouring and held up well for hours. This will improve for next 5yrs and hold for at least 5yrs afterwards. The dryness is reduced with extra air, but it is a feature of 02 Bdx after all...

No decant from voluminous Zalto Bordeaux glass. Young colored, which means brilliant red and no signs of ageing. Enchanting nose showing lavish red fruit tones. Light hearted palate, not overconcentrated but funky. Let's see what's going on here next five years. For now, great fun.

Dinner with Mark, Aaron, and Jordanna: Really comes along with about an hour of air. Starts off a little simple but puts on weight with air and shows a smoked nose, a little scorch, earth, and fruit that tends to the dark end of the spectrum. This is good. A pure fruit palate. This bottle had enough acid; not flabby at all. The last one was probably an aberration.

Great nose and quite classic for Chevalier. But the taste is not classic. But I like it a lot. Very dark and concentrated. Very much a wine you need food alongside. Opened and poured in large glass about an hour before drinking. Quite concentrated dark chocolate, dark berries, violets and earth. Funny how I am a great fan of DdC, and I found this not to be a classic. But loved it very much.

30min decant wasn't enough, 60min double decant was perfect. Classic, plenty of body. Smooth tannins, finish a little dry... But very classic, balanced and 'correct'. Til grillet lår av kje a la provencal. Åpnet en flaske av denne for snart fem år siden og noterte "grønne tanniner uten sjarm". Nå er det grønne tilnærmet borte og sjarmen tilbake. Urter, sigar og steinstøv på nese - Graves=gravel=grus.... Tett men lett i munnen; intens men frisk. Laaaaang. Ikke veldig mye frukt igjen, drikker veldig bra nå. Veldig morsomt å følge en vin på veien; neste og siste flaske om 2-3 år.
Medium dark rust red color. Aromas of cassis, tobacco, cedar, and herbs. Palate has an interesting mix of smoke, cherry, currant, tobacco, and herb notes that cover the tannins that are almost fully integrated at this time. This is drinking pretty well now and will likely improve a bit more with further time in the cellar. Drink or hold.

Oh yes. Considerably better now in September 2011 than the last bottle I opened in April 2009. Slight brown rim developing around the deep red core, the fruit is now back in the foreground, with redcurrants and maraschino cherries vying for attention. Plenty of more complex elements: cigars, vanilla, even a little burnt caramel. Give it a little air but not too much. After the relative disappointment of the first bottle in 2009, I'm so glad I waited another 2+ years before trying it again. Lovely stuff.

I'm very happy to share the excitement with you! After few years of waiting, it is finally showing some of its charming faces! Utterly beautiful, although a little rustic! Rich nose of black currants, strong dark fruits showing, as time evolves, tobacco, vanilla, incense with a touch of stem, eucalyptus, also candies fruit showing! Complex and yet beautiful! Charming! On the palate, very young and rich, good depth of pure red fruits! Still very deep ruby red in color with very little brownish disc, almost invisible! My guess is the wine still can evolve for a couple of years and can be kept for minimum seven years from now, possibly longer! A very good wine indeed! Charming Pessac Leognan!

Dark red color. Lovely nose-very fruity and mature. The taste however is more complex. Lots of earthy notes as well as fruit. Not a lot of tannin, so it will be interesting to see the lifespan of this one. But I quite like it as it is now. Decanted 1 hour before dinner. Black currant+berries, medicin cabinet, liqourice, chocolate. Long aftertaste.

Domaine de Chevalier Tasting (Blacksalt): A bit diffuse on the nose at first; very symptomatic of 2002 Bordeaux but also shows the true strength of Graves in a rain filled season. The drainage performs miracles as 02 Haut Brion / Mission and Haut Bailly were also atypically strong. Great earthy nose with plenty of tobacco and nuanced cherry. The minerality speaks clearly.

Domaine de Chevalier Wine Lunch (Blacksalt): Thought the nose had a nice combination of smokiness and cranberry. Palate was a bit more feminine that the 2001, and not as dense and structured as the 2000. The palate was characterized by red florals, cassis, some black fruits and smokey minerals. Certainly a nice wine that did well against the 2001 and 2000 Chevaliers.

I am a shrimp compared with Robert Parker but how his and my judgements can vary so greatly on this wine (whatever my difference in tastes with RP might be I can usually understand exactly where he is coming from) I do not know. This is exquisite - balance, warmth, controlled pleasure, minerality, place - this has it all for me. Indeed my top wine of the year. I feel increasingly alienated by Bordeaux but, for me, this wine remains true to what made the region great in the first place.

Pretty dark cherry core. No evolution on the rim. Really nice nose which kept evolving. Started with smoky mushrooms and earthy notes to more cassis and other dark fruits. On the 2nd day, surprisingly the oak was showing a little too much and finally settle down again on the 3rd day. Integrated tannins with a lower acidity than I would have expected from that vintage. Overall, a nice and enjoyable Pessac but a little young right now.

Very acceptable but not outstanding. It's generally reasonably balanced, with good length. Some cedar notes on the nose. The fruit is very much in the background and I agree with some of the other tasting notes that the oak is far too much in the foreground. Tannins resolving well... I have another bottle left which I won't open for another couple of years I think. It's a nice wine but don't expect pyrotechnics.

Much the same as my last tasting of this great estate. The 02 comes across with a rather big, complex nose of vanilla and wood. The fruit seems somewhat cloaked by the extensive use of oak, but the wines remeains pleasant with mellow tannins and a medium+ finish. Elegant and balanced as expected from DdC, but the 02 remains in my opinion a vintage for consumption within the next 5 years. Good, but not a stunner.

Ruby red, medium body with nose of red fruits and some earth elements which I have trouble defining. Bit unsure about the oak which feels somewhat heavy and dominant, but overall a very good wine in my opinion. Long finish and firm tannins which makes me believe this wine will drink well over the next years. Looking forward to taste another one in a few years time.

Lovely wine in perfect window. My last note was spot on. Gave this 30mins in decanter and back to bottle.

On the 2nd day, surprisingly the oak was showing a little too much and finally settle down again on the 3rd day. Integrated tannins with a lower acidity than I would have expected from that vintage.
Overall, a nice and enjoyable Pessac but a little young right now.

pretty, floral nose. nice texture - silky on the palate. but did not improve as it took air. lacked fruit and fell a little flat on the finish. just ok.
follow up on 3rd night. much better. cherry fruit has filled out with dried herbs, tea leaves. nice. has even added a little length.

Wonderful wine. Bouquet is really opening up now, compared with a year ago, followed by a good, rounded mouth filling taste.

Parker is right-on about this wine. It is delightful but not significant but will improve over the next three years.

Red ruby in color, the nose is a little bit four-square, not as fragrant as the vintage 2000, on the palate, the fruits do exist, but just don't see the attractiveness there! Sleeping?
