An impressive BBM, with all the power, authority and structure of a Grand Cru, but unfortunately no longer with the fruity charm and playful finesse of yesteryear (my previous tasting note is from eight years ago). It is now a serious, honeyed and salty wine, with excellent drive and length - it's just that the fruit and floral fragrance have all but vanished. Will last though.

I had purchased this at auction a few years ago and was worried that I should have consumed it earlier. Turns out that the wine was still performing quite well. While I was under-impressed with the nose which was closed but had some apricot and pear tones to it the palate had very nice acidity and salinity with medium mouthfeel but a very satisfying finish. Time to drink up as the wine wasn’t improving in the glass and given prior comments may be on the decline

Not a hint of premox, yay! Delicious, excellent texture and viscosity, classy acidity and minerality to keep it balanced, ripe as per the vintage but in no way over the top. Bested by A Ramonet BBM but by maybe a point. Classy juice!

dark golden hue; for an almost 15 year old white, i worried it was oxed - but fortunately, it was not! nose has no funk at all - some muted white fruit and hints of flint. in the mouth, some pineapple notes, good acidity, some flint, white pepper and some salinity; body is medium. old world and probably at its peak; but i am very happy with this bottle and glad i have one more which i will endeavor to drink in the next 3 months.

Shap's 1st annual Xmas party: 92-93 Nose was initially dominated by toasted oak notes, had pretty ripe fruit and almost reminiscent of an older California chard. The palate couldn't have been more different. Very nice mineral presence balanced the oak, decent acidity kept the wine fresh and overall very smooth and easy drinking wine. Mature but by no means over the hill.

Casual Champagne/ Burgundy Dinner Post Auction (Smyth - Chicago IL): Very floral start with tropical notes, lemon curd and lots of concentration. Rich and very forward, slightly short of acidity, but making that up with chalky minerality. In its peak drinking window now. One person thought this past its peak, but that might reflect a preference for mostly younger wines.

After a recent bottle of his Batard from 2005 this particular bottle had livelier and more enticing aromatics, yet the mouth feel and texture were leaner and more reserved. Some more complexity and structure within about an hour from opening yet surprisingly shy in context of the vintage. A very nice showing nonetheless from a bottle that could have easily aged another 3-5 years although would not expect much more in terms of development.

A Birthday for Dave (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose starts off with toasty oak notes, gradually settles and evolves over 20 minutes to show the fruit, meyer lemon and wet stones to compliment the oak. The palate still feels youthful too, plenty of oak still there, though it is certainly well done and showing signs of integration. There's nice weight and texture, creme brulee, almost a sweet note to the creamy citrus fruits, toasted oak and a medium plus finish. Very good, and still improving. 93+pts.

White wine of the evening. Really impressive Bienvenues-Bâtard by Pernot. Lovely nose, ripe peaches, apple, almost exotic. Flint, mineral, honey, almond, sweet spice. Very clean and pure fruit on the palate, silky texture and a wonderful mineral finish which lasts for a very very long time. Wow!

A private tasting (Jan-Dirk Taams' residence, Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Excellent depth and definition on the nose, ripe citrus, flowers, well-integrated oak, pure and primary, "aerien" even; wonderful palate, complete, many nuances of ripe fruit, well-structured, excellent intensity, excellent balance, seductive; great length. At peak, time in hand. A standout in these first two flights.

Bright and fresh with some matchstick that blows off. Some lemon and floral lift on the nose, and a mouthwatering freshness, and limestone feel. I would have guessed a Chevalier Montrachet. Pure fresh and clean with outstanding flavor density without weight. Lovely texture, poise, focus and a sense of weightlessness that belies its power. Beautiful stuff. 95pts

Paul Pernot Featured at the Lieu-dit Cru Blind White Burgundy Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind in Pernot BBM flight. Slightly floral with spice hints behind explosive, concentrated peach an dapple with some tropical fruit hints. Big and dense, no signs of fatness. Great now, this should age gracefully. Also a WOTN contender that everybody enjoyed.

A private dinner (at home): Pristine bottle, rich colour but no (prem)ox, as fresh as a daisy. Purchased on the basis of a jubilant tasting note from Jancis in 2009. The nose is starting to develop the predicted richness (even more so after several hours in the decanter); the palate has good weight and stuffing but is still tight and minerally (quite exceptional for the vintage) with oak in check. Lovely flavour intensity and length. Needs more time; it should have the energy to age well.

Generally I'm liking the 05 white burgs lately, and this was no exception. Went from good to very good as it warmed up and got some air. Still reserved, with lots of life left.

absolutely stunning bottle of wine. no one guessed that this was a 2005. there was such great cut and finishing acidity; none of the fatness that can come with some 2005 whites.... this wine had richness without coming off as fat... mouth filling... unbelievably long finish... painful intensity... just a beautiful showing of a great bottle.

Probable infanticide here but wanted to crack the first of a six pack. Pale yellow color. Very shy and reticent on the nose at first, but definitely not premoxed. The first sip revealed razor sharp acidity and was basically like chewing on liquid slate. Over the course of an hour this opened up a little to reveal great depth of limy citrus fruit with no hint of oak, very viscous and a great persistent finish. This is giving up only a fraction of its potential right now and will let the rest slumber for at least 5 years. Definitely grand cru stuff.

Absolutely stunning wine. Nuts, carmel, fruit -- so amazingly complex and yet well-balanced. Lived up to my memory of the fantastic barrel tasting we did there last year. May be the best chardonnay I've ever had.

France Trip Part 3 - Burgundy; 6/20/2006-6/23/2006: Barrel sample tasted at the domaine w/ Paul Pernot. Lovely. Rich flavors of apricots, honeysuckle, nuts, and flowers. Caramel. Love the weight and concentration. Great balance. Should be excellent.

Barrel sample tasted at the domaine. Like the Pucelles and Batard-Montrachet, this is also a bit closed onthe nose presently, with the Folatieres being more open and expressive at the moment. On the palate, finer /brighter than the Pucelles. Terrific balance. Light caramel flavors, with appley fruit. Looks to be excellent.

Similarly fearsome dark golden but this one performed well. Last ounces became honeyed 3 hours after opening. What a joy.

Labor Day Burgundy Insanity at Paulee du Hersh 9/1-2/18 (Denver, CO): Slight petrol on the nose. High acidity and ever so slightly out of balance. Drunk alone with dinner I’d love this but unfortunately every flight has a loser.
