I really enjoyed this bottle. All about power, even if from a lighter-bodied wine. Didn't take notes in the social(ly-distanced) setting, the the current community average of ~91 seems about right.

Much better than my last bottle in January but still not something extraordinary. There’s a bit of red fruit left, some notes of underbrush. Quite lean, lacking depth. Past it’s prime I’m afraid.

This particular bottle hasn’t aged well or the wine is past peak. It comes across as dilute, lean, unexpressive, though with just a faint hint of what this wine was years ago. The fruit is very subtle and understated, there’s a few notes of cedar and tobacco. Let’s see if I kept this too long or if other bottles are better. Disappointing.

Dinner at DC by Darren Chin (DC by Darren Chin, Kuala Lumpur): I had quite forgotten having had this wine about a decade ago. Like the 2002 Simon Size Savigny Vergelesses that we had alongside, this seems to have shut down a bit when we had it. The quality was still clear, but everything was a little tight. The nose was pleasant enough, and also showed a nice Savigny typicality, with curls of smoke around some blackcurrants, with edges of brighter strawberries, and then notes of earth, bramble and spice. This really smelt like a slightly smokier, but slightly less meaty cousin to the Size. The palate also shared some similarity with the earlier wine in its structural tightness, with a chewy structure and plenty of juicy acidity running through flavours of sour cherries lined with mineral, earth and another twist of thorny bramble into its long finish. Like many 2002s at this point of their evolution, this seems to have gone to sleep a bit. Would be interesting to try in another 3-4 years' time.

From 750: Perhaps a little past prime, but very, very good. I usually drink Ecard's wine early. It always drinks well young. Ecard is a perennial over achiever. Oak apparent on the nose and palate. Enough fruit survives to make this a good burgundy. Dont push your luck if you have this in your cellar. Drink up!

A very easy to enjoy Savigny. Feels like it is drinking at its prime, with fully resolved structure and inviting brambly black fruit and spices (including some mint notes). Juicy with a good length. It does feel slightly hollow in the midpalate, but that doesn't take away from it pleasure factor today. I'd drink it over the next 3-5 years.

Garnet color, very mature. Nice red fruits, cherries, minerials and earthiness. Lovely, but time to drink up. Alas, my last bottle of this vineyard from M. Ecard.

Opens with some serious sous bois. Funky, too. The red fruit hits upfront with a rather vivacious attack for this point in its evolution. It's very lean, cool, mineral driven-cherry fruit flavors. It's not long, and rather is-what-it-is, but that's ok, as it is right tasty. Great values and I continue to be very fond of Ecard's Savignys.

Just barely approachable, with plenty left in the tank. A wee little bit funky, the acidity and tannin are still sticking out, but the underlying material is visible beneath. Lovely, aromatic, real Burgundy.

Cork was stained up to the top and even appears to have been the tiniest drop that leaked although it dried and sealed. Ruby in color. The nose is very nice with cherries and some damp, wet earth. With air, a bit of funk comes out. On the palate, this tastes young and undamaged. Still more primary than I would have expected a pristine bottle to be. Lots of fresh cherries, a bit of layering unwinds with air showing some minerality/earthiness. Nice texture. Slightly tart but within reason. Nice wine and a reminder of what good values Savigny can be.

Opened with dinner after a corked bottle of Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Beze. Lovely from the get-go: round, red-fruited with all sorts of umami scents (beef blood, seaweed, soy sauce), balanced and rich. Nothing out of place at all, just beautiful stuff and the reason that we drink wine.

Wow. Drinking very very well. Perfumed nose, beautful entry and palate with sweet fruit predominating. Good clean finish. Not the power or depth of a very top Burgundy, but batting well above its weight for the appellation and price point. Probably would have been good after food, but my wife and I polished it off during the meal.

Chapitre d'Automne de la St Hubert (Nicolas Restaurant, Keong Saik Street, Singapore): This was simply lovely. Most of us voted it red wine of the night in spite of competition from an Echezeaux, a Bonnes Mares and a Gevrey 1er Cru. Dark purple colour with a pinkish red hue on the rim seemed to suggest youth, but the nose had taken on a nice interesting ring of a sligthly older wine already, with lovely aromatics like pure, sappy morello cherry, dried strawberries and lifted hibiscus and rose water mixed with very Savigny scents of meat, leather and earth. There was more of the lovely purity of fruit on the palate in the form of sweet cherries and fresh strawberries, alongside more rose water and a nice truffly touch. It finished with a hint of earth and dry undergrowth. Not the most complex of wine, but so wonderfully made, with a good weighty palate, beautifully integrated flavours and lovely balance. An absolute joy to drink.

Nice entry, a lot of berry fruit on mid-palate, acidity too obtrusive at beginning but mellowd some with time. Good, not great, length but a clean finish with low tannin. As noted, took wll to a slight chill. Nice wine to drink in summer with summer food.

Red Burgundy 2002/2003 1er Cru Blind Tasting (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Blind tasting. Moderate red color. All red fruit with a slightly earthy nose. More pale fruit on palate with lots of structure, clearly showing as 2002. Needs lots of time, which was why this group didn't much appreciate this wine tonight, ranking it last place.

Group #12, My #3. Full red color. Nice rich sweet red fruit nose with floral and briar hints. Nice rich balanced black cherry fruit - good pedigree here.

Bright sour cherry and strawberry on the nose follows on the palate. Juicy, but with plenty of structure. My only quibble is that it seems disjointed right now -- the (rather creamy) oak, structure, and fruit came across as separate components.

$24 retail, after discount. Fruit driven - bright red cherry / strawberry. Round and juicy in the mouth, without much underlying tannin or acid structure. Light - med bodied. Probably best drunk over the next few years. Especially nice served slightly chilled.
