  • amazing quality/price !
This second wine of Pape Clément ( with now 18 years behind) is still full of strenghts (in terms of colour, of nose, of velvety effect on the palate) Well balanced, it's elegant

  • Nose: Some inky and floral qualities with cassis and assorted herbs. Palate: Black cherries, cassis, and a medium length, very elegant finish. Last bottle notes were on 2/18/12 and this still rocks but would recommend drinking up soon. 92+ points.

  • Very kindly given to me to try by Alex. This was quite a revelation; a second wine that reflected its terroir and could overlap in quality with some classed growths (something often claimed by merchants re second wines but rarely justified imho) Dark red core with light red rim with just a hint of some development. Nose had Graves tar and gravel with violets and plums. Palate had tarry plums, sweet liquorice, graphite and a mineral cassis finish with some nice acidity. Tannins were present but quite juicy. This is not a big wine but it is elegant, precise, well delineated and light on its feet. Other reviewers have this developing to about 2018. On the evidence of this bottle I would say that whilst it is starting to drink nicely now it has the structure and balance to develop further for 3-4 years and to give pleasure for some years thereafter. This was lovely and very enjoyable by itself or with food. Mrs Wood and I had a glass with Coq au Vin which went really nicely and the rest by itself which was even more pleasurable. 92-3 at the moment, but this will increase, I am sure.

  • Just lovely. After an hour poured off to the shoulders but not decanted, we just loved it. Light on its feet, but very tasty. And that is coming after a California Cabernet. Wish I had bought more but have two more.

  • Quite an evolved wine for such a young age. This 2005's bouquet boasts fantastically precise cassis notes supported by briary notes and tertiary underpinnings of mushrooms, sweet black licorice, sous bois, and the hallmark of graves - melted road tar. Delineated by bursts of fresh acidity, this second wine shows a knack for superb (yet unobtrusive) cellar tecnique, dazzling pedigree and stupendous terroir; and the medium-full bodied palate matches the bouquet like a mirror. Magrez hit the nail on the head with this entry which is unmistakably 2005 Graves.

Unctuous and still slightly structured (the tannic shape is almost like an odd mix of structure behind the velvet that is, in my best guess, 70% maturely integrated...but all 100% of them are so, so, so juicy and sweet!), the juice in my glass is not shy and is well into its drinking window, but, I suppose the plateau will be moderate but evolutionarily slow from this point on to roughly 2016+ if kept in a cool cellar. For those who do not mind highly evolved wines on the cusp of loosing freshness of fruit, this wine should hold on for 3-4 years thereafter. This vintage just goes from strength to strength.. Should be interesting to taste the 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 all side by side in a few years.. Now if I can just not drink them all..

For the sheer pleasure factor I would want to give this wine a 93-95, but the heat on the still long and delicious finish takes away from that a bit (even only at 13%), and so does the fact that while super delineated, the qualities in this wine overlap in a muddled way (taste this wine next to the grand vin and you'll know what I am talking about). Still, at this price, if you can still find any... I hope you have bought the entire inventory before even reading this far into my review (and if you still haven't, well then shame on you!).

  • 3rd March 2013
The last bottle I tasted was in 2010. Based on the tasting notes of that bottle, it would appear thar I left it late to taste the second bottle.
The nose is not intense with any specific bouquet. There are some legs though not significant. The first mouthful tasted a little sweet and further mouthfuls brought out some chocolate. The finish was not especially long. As such, I would prefer this wine in its youth rather than after a longer cellaring period.
Still, it is a medium bodied wine that can be enjoyed.

  • Day 3 review. Medium purple. Elegant with underbrush, red fruits, graphite, earth and fresh herbs. Medium finish and plenty of flavors. Really a nice wine and should drink well for 5 plus years.

  • Fragrant and earthy, with notes of black cherries, black currants, blackberries cassis, sweet licorice, cigar box, eucalyptus, tar, sandalwood, and a whiff of barnyard. The cherry and cigar box notes intensify in the glass, picking up shards of gravelly minerality. Seamless on the palate, full-bodied, well-integrated, with a velvety texture, and great purity of depth and fruit. Outstanding. 92+

  • Nose: Inky, lilly aromas with some funk and black cherries. After aeration less funk and more spicy black cherry with good gravelly minerality. Palate: The inky flavor shows initially but after about 2 hours of bottle air things start to unwind nicely and the black cherry is most noticable with the mineral presense as well. Very soft tannins and an elegant finish. Last tasting notes on 9/20/09. This has evolved beautifully so it will be interesting to determine when to open my last bottle. Perhaps 1 1/2 -2 years max given the approachability now. 92+ points.

  • My first bottle of Pape Clement, grand vin or second wine. Brilliant red color. Fine legs off the glass. Aromatic nose comprising of vanilla pod and interesting nuances of sour dough. No big burst of berry fruits but instead a very smooth dark grape body. Velvety medium finish that is very classy. A longer more complex finish would have warranted a higher score. Nonetheless an excellent wine!

  • Unfortunately my last bottle. Delicious one more time with it's velvety palate with fully integrated tannins and medium-long finish. The colour shows some development / signs of maturity. This will certainly drink well for a couple more years but I don't think it has the structure required for putting down for the longer term

  • Once again excellent. Unlike most of the 2005 bordeaux, here the tannins are soft and perfectly integrated. I think this greatly balanced wine is at its peak now and do not see a reason not to drink within the next 2 to 3 years

  • 27th Nov 2010: though still young after 5 years of cellaring i was eager to taste this wine. the colour was intense red, setting up the senses for a full bodied wine experience. the bouquet was aromatic, can't place the smells (the bbq smoke interfered :) ). the taste was filled with youthful flavour, though smooth and the finish medium, this will definitely benefit from a few more years of cellaring. A really lovely and enjoyable wine.
    The body is Medium/Full.
    The wine is textured Smooth.
    The wine finishes Medium.

  • Dinner at Gourmet Plus with two Bordeaux Blends (Gourmet Plus, Frankel Avenue): Pretty pleasant. Alcohol was the first thing to hit me on the nose. It was always more or less present in the wine, but toned down a little with some swirling to show floral notes, some plums and prunes, smoke, gravelly earth and some minty eucalyptus. Made me think new world Cab at first. The palate added to that impression as well. Sweet, ripe, thick, plush. Not OTT though. In fact, it showed nice clean cassis tones, some mineral, some earth, more smoke and some amount of acidity. A nice elegance in spite of its size I thought. Finish was shortish and brambly, but certainly not unpleasant. Guessed it as a Graves when told it was not a new world. A very decent second wine.

  • At first, alc does show up but with time integrates into the red currant spicyfruits, mineral nuanced , almost smoky nose. Ripe powerful fruits on the palate with lots of juice, lots of weight accompanyin plump but firm structurals. Quite ready drinking after a while in the glass. This opens up to an in-betweener of ultra modern and deadbeat classical bordeaux wines.

  • Drank side by side with Heinrich Gabarinza 2005, which has a somewhat similar nose. Much preferred the Gabarinza 2005 though (complexer, fresher and more substance) for a price 30% less... I do not know at what price other taster purchased this, but at 50 EUR (2009 price) this wine does not score very high on my Q/P scale.

  • Vikings Sunday at John Glas house: Nose: Dark, dense inky quality with some assorted herbs and spices and leather hints. Palate: Ink and dark fruits initially with a lengthy spicy finish. After aeration more red fruits were present. This wine was decanted two hours and spent a lot of time in glass. It is just a baby and should have a long and very promising life ahead. Nice effort from Pape Clement.

  • Drank at "Cucina Povera" Restaurant, Athens, Greece, over my birthday dinner.
Fairly dark ruby-garnet. Fantastic Pessac nose, with herbs, spices, cedar wood and creme de cassis. Mid-bodied and round, with polished tannins, good fruit and high acidity. Long finish. A great wine to drink now, while waiting for its bigger brother to evolve in the cellar. Even rounder and more harmonious than when previously drank at the same restaurant.

  • Consumed over three nights; by the third it had faded considerably but was still quite good. An opulent wine and a great QPR for a quality Bordeaux. Despite its youth, it is drinking remarkably well now.

  • Drank at Cucina Povera restaurant with friends.
Dark ruby turning to garnet. Great nose with cedar, coffee, cassis and herbs.Mid-bodied, round, perfectly balanced and forward, with juicy tannins, excellent fruit and balancing acidity. Very long finish. Really enjoyable. Everyone of us loved it. To drink now, while waiting for the Chateau's first wine (Chateau Pape Clement 2005) to reach maturity. (91-92)

  • Rich, full wine with soft tannin and slightly prominent initial notes of pencil lead that fade over the course of several hours and leave a very well-balanced wine. A steal at the price.
