Open 4 hours. An absolutely majestic nose headlined by roses, violets, spring undergrowth, and a little bit of wild strawberries. It smells like the woods in the spring. With air the rose adds a very feint chocolate giving a Turkish Delight note. The woods, flowers and cocoa return on the palette, but the fruit maybe a bit more black than red, wild brambles. A light iron minerality too. On the third glass, a little cola, like Fentiman’s cola, botanical style. This is an exceptional pinot noir, and I can’t wait to try other vintages.

Light red. Minor deposit on decanting. Briary raspberry and red cherry. Oak evident. Ditto palate. More lifted raspberry fruit. Medium length. Coarse finish. I’m not as enamoured with it as previously. Drink up. Day 2 - Nose more refined, fruitful. Palate more balanced, more black fruits evident. Black cherry. Still short but much more enjoyable and not fraying from being open for a day.

eleven-vintage Ata Rangi vertical (K&L Redwood City): dark ruby colour. dark fruit dominates the generally sweet nose with vanilla and rose notes and just subtle earthy whiffs. in the mouth it is currently rather open-knit: dark and red fruits parade across the palate, tangy and bitter notes appear and fade, as do spice and herbal accents. the tannins are grippy but smooth, and the acidity is subtle but persistent. very good length.
at nearly eight years, it seems to me that this wine has not yet quite fully come together… i expect it to improve with even a bit more age. 40% whole cluster, 35% new oak for eleven months
[low-yielding season with smaller berry size. the driest growing season in about two decades affected by high winds. late season rains gave the vines a boost of energy]

👀 Slight purple-ish hue which is faded more towards brick red colour now, translucent. 👃🏼 Barnyard funk, animal, sweat, smoke. 👅 Structured pinot, even at this age shows good acidity and plenty of well integrated smooth tannin. Almost no primary fruit left at this stage, a bit of morello cherry. Mushroom and animal sweatiness predominate. A rounded, structured, good quality wine but a bit too hot and short on the finish. Very Burg like.

Fine briary ripe red fruits. Spicy. Good power. Ditto palate. PC quality. Reminiscent of Chambolle. Very good Pinot. Lovely interplay of fruit, acid and tannin. Beginning to drink but better in 5 years. Deserves its elevated status.

PnP. Seemed a bit more restrained and not as impressive with this bottle as compared to last. Medium to light weight with good balance but not particularly good. Disappointing.

PnP, or whatever the screwcap equivalent is. Medium red. Intoxicating nose of raspberry and cherry with a hint of spice. Lovely flavors on the palate echoing the nose but with more spice on the finish. Seems to be drinking really well although nicely balanced so could age to see what kind of secondary characteristics develop. Not sure I will wait. Lovely.

Few hours of air in glass container already. Drank in Grassl Cru. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of black cherries, dark red cherries, dark licorice, some borderline cola. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), structured medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flaovur intensity, with flavours of black cherries, dark red cherries, dark licorice, baking spices, bits of brambles. Structured long finish, with lingering black cherries. Very good quality. So much fruit substance, but maintains its balance. Great candidate for ageing. Give this at least another 5 years.
Quite full bodied, earthy. Coming to the conclusion that the best grilled salmon pairing is MV6, so this is a lot of the Abel clone, so wasn't the best match.
Still, a lovely Pinot, good to drink on its own, but I'd like to try this with some duck.

I really enjoy Ata Rangi wines ...... Always more restrained and striving for Old World sophistication. On this occasion I think I drank the wine too cold as it was PnO out of the cellar at 13degrees and it never really got going. It was lovely nonetheless and my score is reflective of the last glass (isn’t it always the case) which was revealing of a wine with a lot more to offer ....... Very good fruit, not overly complex but beginning to show some complexity. And really nice mouthfeel - silky. Honestly, at this price and vs a lot of Burgundy I doubt anyone would be disappointed.

Dark for a pinot. Nose is somewhat muted, but red fruit, gamey and floral notes typical for this region. Well balanced, medium bodied wine, strawberry jam with plenty of smooth juicy acidity, but already quite nicely integrated. Slightly herbaceous notes, very friendly on the tannin front. Definitely a sense of the oak, but shy minerality that comes through towards the end. Finish is medium long, alcohol nicely in check at 13.5%. Actually - quite nice. Will pick up a few more bottles for the years to come, suspect it will show better then.

Deep red colour. More strawberry jam character, very floral. Supremely juicy palate with that big citrusy acidity driving out great length. I get a coolness and suppleness to the fruit here which is really promising too. Lovely fine, dusty tannins. Promising.

Medium Ruby, deep and shiny color. Nose of cranberry, raspberry, some blue fruit, spices, vanilla. Great entry on the palate, very much in the Nuits St.Georges les Vaucrains style (if you want a Burg comparison) with lots red fruit, earthy tones, and solid structure. Mineralic finish. Reminds me of the 2016 Burgundies, lots of lively fruit but also very good structure and acidity. This 2015 is my best showing of this estate so far. 94-95

Spicy, with a little alcohol showing at the moment - which i expect will disappear in time. Deep red berry and earth. silky smooth tannin and nice acidity. Hold but very good.
Screw cap. The wine was medium ruby in colour and offered red fruit, Asian spices, some liquorice, herbal notes and earth on the nose and palate, with good acidity, firm tannin and very good length. The firm, medium-bodied wine seemed very young and needed two hours in a decanter to open up. For the long haul. I would hold for at least five years. 90+(?).

Negociants Australia Portfolio Tasting 2017: Tight nose with some light oak, spice and red fruits. The palate is more open with good fruit weight and length. There is some spice to bring some interest and very good structure. Leave this alone for a while.
