Medium yellow in color. Open knit aromas of white and yellow stone fruits, meyer lemons, honeysuckle, smoky green herbs. The palate is rich, ripe and sweet - this is showing Auslese must weight typical of the 2003 vintage, with honey poached tangerine/peach marmalade, herbal spice, decent acidity and a very long off-dry finish.

Drank last nite with Chinese takeout. Yellowish-gold in color, fairly aromatic, pleasing nose of citrus, white flowers and petrol. Quite sweet on the palate--no doubt a reflection of the hot 03 vintage--but also quite acidic, with a very flinty minerality. Long finish, but quite acerbic at the back end. There's a plentitude of ripe peaches and apricots here, but nicely combined with a stern acidic background--which I would not expect from this vintage. The wine is a bit too sweet (particularly for a spatlese) but still I enjoyed it quite a bit. Were it a tad more demi-sec, I'd have scored it much higher. Very nice surprise, particularly for this vintage.

Light gold in color. Lovely aromas of flint, resin/petrol, ripe orchard pit fruits, orange/lemon zest. Quite sweet in the mouth showing very ripe peach/nectarine compote, honey, orange citrus, medium (+) acidity and a very long off-dry/sweet finish. This is definitely a ripe 2003 Spat.

Pretty saturated yellow in the glass - almost golden. Mature nose with a little petrol, lime, apricot, nectarines, flint, green and red apples, smoke, peach, honey, On the palate, it’s almost creamy with nice freshness, even though the acidity could have been a little higher - the downside of 2003. Long finish.

Light gold in color. Superb aromas of white flowers, green herbs, citrus zest, orchard fruits and flint/petrol waft to the nose. The palate is round and creamy with honey, crushed pears, peaches with citrus zest, good acidity and a long perfumed finish redolent of flint/slate and touch of varnish.

After opening there’s gentle petrol and lime zest. Very creamy texture though as it opens it tends to sharpen. Showing seductive flint and juicier citrus. Fresh quince and whole green apples. Very much alive after being open for a while. Lively acidity and even some fizz incorporated in the texture. You could age this longer but it’s so on point right now. Wonderful combination of youth and maturity.

Served with a mildly spiced Indian dal, this showed very well and also very young. Focused on cherry and ripe peach fruit, there was also a fine vein of minerality, and surprisingly brisk back-end acidity. It's certainly a big spatlese, but the balance is good, and there is plenty of refreshment value. I had grabbed the bottle expecting a bit of a monster, but it still showed the typical Brucke style, under the guiding hand of Donnhoff.

Purchased some bottles of this by auction a year ago, always do not know how the lower acidity of this for Germany extrem dry and warm year is showing in a mature wine, first of all this bottle has a high extract, the nose is like a honey-pot with ripe tropical fruits, very dense and fullbodied appearance, for me more like a Auslese, maybe because of this very warm year, volouptous tropical fruit but not lacking supporting acidity, even though acidity is quite lower as in classical Riesling years, over all a stunning roundness and a whiff of slate in its long aftertaste, stunning bottle reaching the top now, but no need to hurry up for the next 5- 10 years, ****-?, 91-93+?

Pizza at Bill's (Wilmette, IL): Oops. Missed the AP on this one. In any case, this was very similar to some of the other 2003 Dönnhoff that I've had, in that it truly is not a vintage that should be skipped. Sure, the acidity is a little bit less here, but that's made up for by some real dense extract. The fruit is definitely on the sweet side, and the monumental size of this wine is something to behold.

Still very young – with the vintage mark of roundness and sweetness. A bit short and one-dimensional for Dönnhoff, but the balance is impeccable, and even on the third day after ope4ning, there are no signs of decline and the acidity is still crisp and alive. Dinner chez moi.

Nose: Rounded and layered nose with balanced tones of red apples, petrol, peaches, and some mineral tones as well. There is nice depth with some class to the nose as well.
Taste: Medium/light bodied with medium+ acidity that is nice and refreshing. There is a nice fat quality to the tones of red apples, peaches, petrol, and some ginger tones as well.
Overall: This is a really good donnhoff. The acidity is well balanced with a round quality to the tones as well. This is drinking beautifully, but it isn't in any danger of falling off.

Deep yellow lemon color with green reflections. Intense and sweet nose, with subtle aromas of pineapple, yellow peach, pear, candied lime and melon, with very little traces of petrol. The wine is very fruity and racy on the palate, with plenty of fruity flavors in the aftertaste and mouth-watering acidity. It does not have the richness, nor the complexity of a Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spatlese, but it is nevertheless easy to drink and enjoy. 8.5% alc (92/100)

A touch of lemon on the nose with minerals, and a bit of tropical, spearmint. Creamy. Rich on the palate, with tropical aspects, decent balance, but soft as expected for the vintage. Herbal. Missing acid and a touch unfocused. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 3/6, Finish - 3/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0/2 = 10/20.

Impressive - a powerhouse of tropical fruits, pears and red apples with developing smoky and petrol notes already quite prevalent, and a minerally core and acid spine that I normally don't associate with most '03 German Rieslings. This seems a lot more developed than the '01 opened alongside, but the components here are really nicely balanced with plenty of depth, power and length - great wine that I think only suffered from accompanying a bottle of the '01.

Much fresher and more youthful performance than the Hermannshohle, also fruitier in general I guess with its tropical pineapple goodness. A different kind of tropicality - more brightness and vivacity, and as a result a much more fun and lively drink.

Donnhoffs and Thai (Sticky Rice, Chicago IL): nose: good and crisp nose with nice fat tones of minerals, green apples, tropical citrus', bits of ginger, and peach tones. Good depth and expression with very pure flavors
taste: bits of petrol start right off with wonderful fat and round tones of minerals, green apples, peaches, and a good helping of tropical citrus tones
overall: showing off much better then the norheimer dellechen. More depth and expression on both the nose and palate that is drinking well at this time. Good crisp acidity that provides great balance with excellent round flavors

8.5% alcohol. AP# 77530100704. this rides the teeter-totter of too ripe and too sweet and too flabby; yet, it holds together reasonably well. it just lacks an overall integration of parts and, ultimately, acid. still, a fun sipper tonight with some popcorn.

The nose is ripe on this wine - shows ripe white peaches, lemon curd, as well as a touch of minerality. On the palate, this is balanced, but lacked distinctiveness you would expect of a wine of this class. Was not as racy as I would like, but overall pretty nice for the vintage

Very pale almost clear. There is an almost red fruit aspect to the nose --- this is mixed with peaches and cream. This is in sharp contrast to the apple and honey of the JJ Prum yesterday. Roasted pineapple and current fruit on the palate – a bit candied on the finish. It has a feel that is light as a feather, but there is good richness and intensity. Quite harmonious for such a young wine, it should approach its peak in 2010 and hold there for a number of years. (93)

TTG#10: Summer Wines? (Tokyo American Club): Clear and bright, limpid enough to be described as water with texture, except that it has good light yellow color. Very expressive nose dominated by that signature bright incisive cherry and stony dust, but supported by a strong degree of tropical fruit. On the palate, big texture that rolls around very smoothly but manages to have a bit of cut as well (though less than in other vintages). Still in a primary stage, the palate pretty much follows the nose except for some spice that begins on the mid-palate and builds on the finish to combine with a tiny touch of cool kirsch. Bigger and not quite so incisive as I would hope, but packed with flavor. Will be interested to see how this ages.

This was my third time trying this wine, and unfortunately, the third time was not the charm. Although still showing excellent balance and potential, this wine seems to have shut down in a big way. There was nowhere near the amount of boisterous tropical fruit that it's shown before, and the finish was a bit attenuated. Perhaps this was just a slightly off-bottle, but I'm more inclined to think that it's just shutting down a bit. Nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable wine and I'm confident it will improve.

[Farmington Continuing Ed. Wine Class] Vibrant light yellow color, followed on the nose by a soaring intensity of clove, melon, lemon tart, pear, and a hint of pine. In the mouth, the unctuousness is arresting - loads of pink grapefruit, green apple, and pineapple backed up by mouth-watering levels of acidity. Very impressive stuff, with a killer minute-plus finish. Superb now, but will benefit from a few years of cellaring and likely last 10-15 years.

Light yellow color, nothing unusual for a Dönnhoff Spätlese. The nose was a bit subdued at first, but openened up over the course of the evening. Baked apples, pears and a floral note on the nose, plus the slightest hint of roses, reminding me of a muscat. In fact, I have been told that well-ripenend riesling starts to smell a bit like muscat. The complexity of this wine was stunning. A medium-bodied wine on the palate with notes of honeyed fruits, apples, pears and spice. Perhaps lacking a bit in acidity for my taste, but the minerality is very intense. Almost chalky, flinty in the finish, which stays for a very long time. While not especially sweet, this wine conveys a sense of balance that sets it apart from its peers in the unusual 2003 vintage. I prefer the Hermannshöhle (as usual), but this wine is no slouch either. On the second day, I found that the wine improved even more as it gained definition and cut. It is technically impossible that the acidity improves, but that was my impression nevertheless. If you decide to drink it now, give it some serious air time. Can be drunk now (if you prefer young riesling), but will not hit its peak before 2010-2020.

Much fresher and more youthful performance than the Hermannshohle, also fruitier in general I guess with its tropical pineapple goodness. A different kind of tropicality - more brightness and vivacity, and as a result a much more fun and lively drink.

A little less sugar and a little more acid would've improved an already very good wine. Secondary characteristics, like a faint note of petrol, just beginning to show. Slumming, we drank this with fried chicken.

Very nice wine. Not quite as ephemeral as Donnhoff usually is, but also not overburdened by the 2003 vintage characteristics. Just starting to show some secondary development, but lots of evolution left. Glad to have a case...

8.5% alcohol. AP# 77530100704. this rides the teeter-totter of too ripe and too sweet and too flabby; yet, it holds together reasonably well. it just lacks an overall integration of parts and, ultimately, acid. still, a fun sipper tonight with some popcorn.

Drinking surprisingly well at the moment. More mineraldriven than expected in this hot year.

The nose is ripe on this wine - shows ripe white peaches, lemon curd, as well as a touch of minerality. On the palate, this is balanced, but lacked distinctiveness you would expect of a wine of this class. Was not as racy as I would like, but overall pretty nice for the vintage

Tasting Group Dinner w/ Alan Rath - Rieslings & Thai (True Thai, Minneapolis): Ripe apricots and orchard fruits. Surprisingly fresh acidity considering the vintage. Ripe but not over-the-top. Drinking very well now.

Wine Pot Luck 03 Chave, 90 Lafite, 85 Groth Reserve et al: Very young and in need of at least 10 years of bottle age. Nice acidity and bright fruit flavors. Not overly complex but enjoyable.

Liked it. Awesome Riesling. Wasn't wowed by it compared with other Donnhoff wines, but people have said 2003 is a bit off for this wine. Will definately buy more.
