This bottle was in spectacular shape. It tasted very Bordelais with notes of smoke, tobacco, stewed fruit, and mushrooms. Certainly past its peak, but still managed to develop over the meal, even taking on some interesting salinity notes. This was a really fun wine to track and taste, and a real privilege to taste a historical wine before Paul Draper's time.

Currants, red berries, bright, crunchy and crisp on the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with accents of lead pencil, tobacco wrapper and wet earth. Not profound, but quite the treat when you consider its age.

Montebello was only in small type, but I confirmed identity with winery. Ripe and leathery, dust, menthol, doing quite well. Very satisfying showing for a pre-Draper MB! A-/B+

Dinner With Paul Draper in NYC - older vintages of Ridge (Cafe Boulud): Nice nose but quite dry on the palate and perhaps past its best but it is still quite elegant with classic black mineral and black spice flavors.

Ridge Monte Bello vertical 1964 - 2002 (Institute of Directors, London): Malty, mature, sharp and a bit short, but this still has some fruit and life and is rather attractive
