PnP, last and best bottle of 12. On the nose red fruits with a warm, herbaceous touch and a hint of tertiary notes, on the palate full bodied, smooth and long. At its peak now, for sure not a high end wine, but for its price it was incredibly good.

Decanted two hours before dinner. Not much different to my last note. Great nose, warm, red fruits (mainly prune) and a hint of tertiary notes, on the palate still some edges, good freshness and medium to long finish, still slightly drying, needs food. Good structure to age but perhaps not enough fruit for further improvement, better to drink in the next 2 to 3 years, good price to quality relation.

Bottle 4 of 12, still improved within the last two years. Has benefited from the decant. In the nose prune and leather, mature, superb. On the palate still remarkable tannins but all in all very approachable. Medium to long finish with a bit dry end. Definitely not over the hill, I think people usually do not pay enough attention to wines in this price segment but it would return it back. 89 points with potential for more in one or two years, don't hurry to drink, it will last for at least another 6 years.

This one showed a little more its age but still had elegance and class, dried blackberry and anise with smoky-oaky notes and a fuzzy finish. Acidity is really good and just the right amount with lovely cassis notes on the finish. I have more of the Casona in the cellar but that was the last bottle of the 2005 Hecula ... Though I do have an '03 calling my name now

Medium minus aromas of cream, leather, meat, herbs, alcohol and mushrooms - lots going on but quite muted. On the palate the wine exhibits ripe berry fruit, slight cream, alcohol heat and fine, talc like tannin. Medium plus acid - it's quite juicy and flavoursome and, though the nose implies pretty much all tertiary characteristics, there is some ability age further here based on the palate.

Clear wine with a deep garnet colour and dense slow falling slightly inky legs. The nose is clean, of medium+ intensity and in a developing stage, it shows aromas of very ripe blackberries, ripe plums, anise, black and white pepper, leather and gamey notes. It's dry in the mouth with a medium- slightly flabby acidity, high ripe and rounded tannins, medium+ somewhat warm alcohol, full body with fleshy texture and medium+ intensity flavours of ripe blackberries, ripe plums, anise, black pepper and leather. Medium- finish. A very good quality wine, a good expression of Monastrell that has evolved very well, it has a fairly good amount of concentration and some degree of complexity. However a bit more of complexity, lenght and acidity to balance it would have made this an outstanding wine. It's drinking very well at the moment, maybe at it's peak, and it should be able develop in the next 3-4 years, maybe more.

My last of 4 and clearly the best. The drinking window on this wine is supposedly past but for my tastes I believe that the wine has at least another three years and is likely drinking near peak now. The color of this wine is a dark garnet with no signs of aging. The bottle had a lot of fruit and better balance than earlier bottles. Still a bit of tannin but it is definitely in the background. Quite a nice QPR at $10-12 per.

Last week I posted a piece on the Ottawa Life blog about the new 2009 Hecula that's in the LCBO now ... I mentioned that it was a great buy for what you get ... then I looked into my own cellar and noticed I have a bottle dating back to 2003, but that's not the one I decided to open on this night (give me a week or two and curiosity will get the better of me) instead it was the 2005 Hecula that caught my attention first (probably because I have a back up bottle). At first sniff and sip I found the wine a little tight (still?) or maybe it had just become all wooden in character: there were signs of dark berry (blackberry) and hints of cedar and roasted coffee beans ... that cedar seemed to intensify in the first half hour until it was all you could smell ... but the palate didn't show these signs, instead in had licorice, spice and cassis flowing freely on the tongue. Now here's where things turned wonky. After about half an hour in things started to turn on their head: the nose was much better adding sweet black licorice, cinnamon and cardamom all mixing well with the blackberry; the cedar started to dissipate and the coffee notes became pleasant hints ... but now the cedar seemed to be moving to the palate, masking the original flavours. Fast forward another half hour and voila this wine finally found its way, the nose had lost much of the cedar (it was now just a whiff in the background, and the palate had also shucked it's wooden flavours turning them to black tea and graphite, plus the licorice, spice and cassis were back in full force ... it was also smooth as silk as it glided over the tongue. Advice here would be to open and decant, or if you have the patience: open, pour a bit out to give it some air and let it breathe an hour or so - this is one delicious wine after that.

Slight brickishness color. Herb and earth on the nose. Well balanced and structured with fennel, mild fruit and meaty flavors. Medium acidity, tannins, with sweet licorice and anise, with a little coffee and vanilla on the finish that lingers a long time. Wonderful.

Didn't reflect on notes but overall good impression.
Dark purple, medium bodied. Great nose, if slightly rustic. Smooth yet assertive on palate with great fruit appeal, and decent minerality and acid. Good finish.
Didn't like to stay in air too long, lost freshness. This one should be a pop and pour.
Good value.

Interesting...Much earthier than other Monastrell's I've tried. Earthy with lots of cherries. I prefer a slightly fruitier punch up front. Not my favorite, but builds interesting throughout the glass. I was watching it throughout a viewing of David Lynch's Dune (1984), which I had never seen. FYI, any alcoholic beverage can improve a viewing of this movie.

Earthy, slightly rustic nose with licorice and a hint of oxidation. Fruity and earthy palate, licorice, high alcohol, no perceivable oak, soft tannins, short finish. Not as good as the 2004 or 2006 in my opinion, but a decent and uncomplicated bottle of Spanish wine. Drink now! After 2 days open this bottle was completely oxidized and undrinkable. - 86 points

Fairly dark in color. Dark fruit and vanilla on the nose. Starts off smooth and full bodied but soon the acidity attacks and the pretty firm structure is exposed. Pleasantly dry, which is surprising, but very succulent. Some minerality even. Delicious stuff, even though the 14% ABV tastes on the finish.

Light nose of dark fruit and some minerality. Light blackberry and cranberry upfront, very dry, good acidity, shortish finish with just a tinge of black raspberry hanging on. 14.5%

An interesting wine. Dark garnet colors. Nose of dark cherry and some floral tones, along with an dusky herbal note. On the palate, again dark fruits -- plums and blueberries coupled with a flinty tone. Medium finish. Pretty good balance, with noticeable tannins, but still an easy drinking wine. Can't decide if I really like it or not, but a real bargain price for this complexity.

Deep dark purple. Hot nose, dark stewed fruits, oak. Very nice mouth feel, medium to full body with firm tannins though quick finish. Nicely fruity, cooked berries: blueberries, raspberries. Very drinkable and not as hot as nose suggested. Wonder if a couple years would mellow tannins.

Great wine, dark ruby and good intensity on the nose, smoke, tobacco, brazilian goiabas jam, in the palate tannins very present, a touch of bitterness, but in general well rounded and balanced. Tannins will soften more, though, I believe this wine can still improve for a few years yet on the bottle.

Dark ruddy garnet color with brown-ish rim. Nose: gamey damp leather, blackberry reduction, licorice, mint, and a floral element (violet?). Palate: absolute essence of ripe blackberry with bruleed fig, more of the floral element (some eucalyptus in there?), and mocha latte. Solid acidity. Moderate/firm leathery tannins. Lots of earth and some heat on the moderate/long finish. Attractive and tasty, if somewhat monolithic. Excellent value.

I thought this was pretty good. A bit of mouvedre gameyness on the nose. It mostly settled out into a good version of a homogenized cheap spanish red. I think I might have paid $10-14, which means it's not a great QPR, but alright.

Incredible QPR for an old-vine Mourvedre/Monastrell from Spain. Nose of blueberry/blackberry, leads to a smooth and easy-drinking palate of black fruit and hints of floral notes in the background, with just enough structure to balance the food-friendly nature of this very pleasant offering. Well-made and pleasing. Makes me wonder if some of the prior postings had corked bottles?

Good, not great. Floral and gamey nose. Flavors are a bit overripe, unstructured. Some cream mid-palate. Heat on finish, but not too bad. Decent complexity, individuality. Fair QPR.

In-your-nose ethanol assault even after a couple hours post pour. The heat continues on the palate where sour cherries, prunes, and all spice peep through towards the finish. You can definitely taste the wood here with strong overtones of bark and moss. Finish is short, astringent, with sawdust and air dried sausage notes.

Redish purple. Aroma of blackberry, spring flowers and a hint of orange zest. Plum and dark berry flavor with citrus and minerals. Finishes long with firm tannin and a bit of pepper spice. Great value! I cannot remember when I have had a nicer sub $10 bottle of wine - this would still be a great value at twice the price.

This wine is still very tight. It needs at least 90 minutes in the decanter to be fully enjoyed in the near term. Very dark purple color. Early on this wine was very dry with very little of the fruit showing through. After about 2 hours of aeration the wine showed lots of black fruit aromas as well as leather and a touch of smoke. Across the palate there were blackberry, pepper and leather notes. This wine is quite tannic and the finish is drying.

Much prefer the 2004, or maybe my tastes have changed. That prior vintage seemed more intriguing, with more to offer, while this is a sledgehammer to the palate. Blunt force trauma induced by jammy dark fruit. It lacks elegance and balance, but I can see the appeal if you're into a riper style. Has a spicy kick to it.

This score is after being opened for 15 hours. My score when i first opened and poured would have been 75. The fruit has since mellowed and lost some of that simple one dimensional cheap cherry taste and the tannins have subsided. I am surprised that it improved this much being open in the bottle this long.

Spanish mourvedres have been all over the place for me, and looking at the notes this one is no exception. I made the mistake of aerating this first which killed something. So note is based on unaerated glass. Nose redolent of dried dark fruits (black cherries and figs) with a whiff of herb...rosemary it seems. That trademark "stinky" mourvedre barnyard funk is there, with the usual tar and licorice aspect. Some smoke on the nose to that's very attractive, and a weird menthol character. Actually one of the better Spanish mourvedres I've had, and decent qpr. Will buy again.

Unblended Monastrell wine (Mourvèdre), aged for 6 months in French oak barrels. Decanted for one hour. Deeply purple-red colored wine, with abundant fragrances of dark cherry fruit, spices, cassis and some vanilla. On the palate : a well structured, medium to full-bodied wine, with noticeable but quite smooth tannins and a nice balance. Fairly long finish. Good QPR.
Behoorlijke afdronk. Goed prijs-kwaliteitverhouding.

If you like MOURVEDRE..ie Tempier Bandol...you will like this wine. Opened and drank with cheese, nuts and crackers. A medium dark garnet. OK nose. Aromas of dark cherry, flowers and minerals. Deep flavors but also light on the palate. The finish is short but deep tastes and chewy. The Tempier is $50 and this is $10....you get 85%..but not as much oak as the Bandol .....Really something for the price but you have to enjoy Monastrell/Mourvedre.

Poured out half the bottle. Sour, flat, and uninteresting. Very green, no evidence of the blueberry flavor that many seem to detect. Even blueberry needs a little residual sweetness for balance, this is just sour juice, and not in a good way.

POP AND POUR: It has a cheap wine nose, like sweet fake grapes ground up with stems and seeds. The taste is big and earthy and has a smokey (but subtle) "summer sausage" finish, certainly not a fruit bomb. A little firm on the tannins. A wierd wine; I do like the finish but the nose is not great. 30 MINUTES LATER: Nose has a little less stem, taste is slightly more fruit bomb.

Very dark color. On first opening, very dry & mouth puckering, a bit to acidic for my tastes. Was covering up all the interesting flavors found on the second day. Day two found to be really good wine, still a bit high on the acid for me but within a tolerable range. Interestingly, the acid did not go well with food on either day. Was best sipping after the meal was done.

This bottle followed a value pinot noir and value zinfandel. Compared to those, it came off a little fake-fruity. It's firm and has some dark fruit elements, but wasn't as clean as the other wines. Some wierd sediment in the bottom of the bottle, but it didn't bother anyone.

Took to a party so don't have detailed noted. But great color, deep and dark. Interesting and very aromatic nose. Ripe black and red fruit. Rich and viscous. Chocolatey but almost with a savory element. Silky tannins. Great QPR and seemed to be enjoyed by most at the party. Gotta get me some more!

great QPR, but it fell apart a little bit after 3+ hrs of air. I think that this one is best enjoyed after 1-2 hrs in the decanter.
regardless, strong blue/backberry, and some super sweet almost strawberry on the nose. Almost reminded me of the red powder from a fun Dip packet.
After some additional air, the oversweet nose took on an almost rotten apple note, kind of like when you walk past a crabapple tree late in the season when the apples on the ground start to turn and ferment a bit. A little off putting, but not a complete wine killer.
tart acid on the palate, but great body, and the berry fruit comes through well. Tannins are perfectly integrated with the acidity, and neither override the fruit at all.
I was happy with this one after a couple bad experiences with the other Castano offerings.

Intense dark burgandy red in color showing lush and delicate notes of fresh red roses, cherries, vanilla and charcoal under a thin layer of slate. Wow! Medium to light in body with great acidity that lifts those fine tannins right off the palate leaving a lush rich cherry flavor lingering on the palate behind a tidelwave of bright red fruit! I'm having trouble writing and tasting as I'd rather keep dipping my nose in the glass! Good straight-forward wine that will age beautifully. 4.5/5

Clear and brilliant mahogany red color. The nose on this is dark and brooding with a pure vanilla base that has a layer of smokey minerals on top of it. Dark cherry fruit sits behind this with a lush thick fruit that seems to be waiting to spring forth. In the mouth this wine full bodied with a firm and fine tannin structure that balances the acidty well. Deep black raspberry and red raspberry flavors fill the mouth with a dusty spice coating, that shows more as an accent than a primary flavor. I have a feeling this wine could mature for another couple of years quite nicely. 4/5

Compared side by side with it's sister wine and found this to have a bit more body. Similar in color, deep garnet but a bit more complex in it's fruit. This was also a hot/spicey wine upon opening due to it's high alcohol content, yet it thinned down wonderfully after 30 minutes in the glass. This will probably be even better with a little more age and time in the decanter. Once again, what an incredible value these Spanish wines are....need to buy more before the prices begin to go up as more folks discover them!

In-your-nose ethanol assault even after a couple hours post pour. The heat continues on the palate where sour cherries, prunes, and all spice peep through towards the finish. You can definitely taste the wood here with strong overtones of bark and moss. Finish is short, astringent, with sawdust and air dried sausage notes.

Blunt force trauma induced by jammy dark fruit. It lacks elegance and balance, but I can see the appeal if you're into a riper style. Has a spicy kick to it.

30 MINUTES LATER: Nose has a little less stem, taste is slightly more fruit bomb.

great QPR, but it fell apart a little bit after 3+ hrs of air.
