Initial attractive funk on the nose eventually gave way to a much riper profile. A more red fruit defined bottle than some others. Could have benefited from more bottle time.

Sensual nose with asian and baking spices, violets and dry soil. Smooth on the palate with soft red fruit, light earth tones, and a long finish. A testament to both the vintage and winemaker

Role Reversal Lunch at La Paulée-Dujac Whites (Monts-Luisants) and Lafon Reds (Quince, San Francisco): Light tawny center to watery rim-this looks fully mature. Flowers and green herbs that only become more noticeable over time. Very complex flavors-undergrowth, strawberry and plum fruit that is remarkably sweet and persistent, some soil, and faded tannins. This supple, elegant, completely expressed wine was prototypical Volnay and a great way to finish an extraordinary lunchtime tasting event. Amazing how well some of these delicate 1985's have lasted.

Showing some browning and appearing somewhat muddled, this bottle nonetheless had an expressive nose and intact palate. Good spice tones. 92-93

A somewhat discombobulated bottle with a muddled palate. Sweet red fruit, some damp earth, but not much complexity here. Pleasing though.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys La Paulée Auction; 3/7/2019-3/8/2019 (Le Bernardin Prive - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Great nose of mushroom, earth, mature red cherry and floral hints. Less excited on palate, but I was told it was more interesting when opened 4 hours earlier.

Jasper Volnay. Floral and unexpected green-stem notes. Lucid, pure and graceful red fruit to sour plum palate with depth. Terrific.

Light brown/red. Definite old Burgundy nose. Cherry leather no funk at all. Lots of soft tannins left. Long dry finish.
