Salvaged a broken cork, and pleasantly found the wine was still good. Filtered, decanted for two hours. May have waited a little too long for this one. Still dark in color, no bricking. Slight fig and dark berry on the nose. Very soft and smooth tannins with faint but delicious dark fruit on the palate. Short, non lingering finish. Drink now

Better than expected - a hint of sweet on the nose (but not too much), nice fruit up front, full body in the middle, and then just keeps on going, nice longgg finish. Pnp. Enjoyed with steak.

Quite dark purple-blue in color. Blackberry and cinammon on the nose. Notes of coffee, blueberries, blackberry with bramble, and a hint of sour raspberries. Strong tannins. One gets the feeling that this wine has reached its peak but has another ten years or so of drinkability.

Allowed to slow ox in the bottle for a couple of hours. Pretty consistent with my TN from mid 2010 except that the tannins have softened considerably. This is cassis/blackcurrent driven from the nose right through to the moderate finish. Medium to full bodied vith plenty of fruit and decent balance. Nice wine but very one dimensional with no secondary characteristics emerging. Still shows a little oak but it seems to be integrating. Can't see this getting much better at this point.

1.5 hour decant. Dark garnet color. Black cherry, black currant, cassis, black olives, spice and cedar notes. Full bodied. Cherry and soft tannins on the mid-palate. Long finish. Good structure and acidity. Drinking well at this time. Paired with roast beef.

Dark red with very slight mahoganey edge. Ripe fruit, supported by oak and green note. Tasty but unfocused dark fruit flavours. Broad and slightly alcoholic. Tannin is masked by the glycerin.

Delectable aromas of black cherries, black currant, blueberry pie, dark licorice, and black tea. Very well-structured Cabernet with a solid spine along the full-bodied, muscular palate that's full of black fruit, damp earth, dark chocolate, coffee, and toasted vanilla. Tannins start to kick-in 20 minutes after opening, which lend to an attractive grip toward the long finish. This is an excellent, quintessential Napa Cabernet. Drink now until 2020.

Menthol, grilled herbs, black cherry on the nose. Plush, menthol, blackberry, black cherry, herb palate with seasoned oak spice that is fairly well integrated. With little tannin, the acidity frames the wine and does an admirable job dialing back the midpalate and extending the finish to a rather odd note of maraschino cherry that seems a bit out of place, and a bit of heat. The overall impression I get is that of a fairly well contrived Californian Cab, that is unfortunately contrived. It's a little more than loose and even though the oak is in there, it comes off like lipstick on an injected and wrinkleless OC cougar. Manufactured and soulless. Why am I so harsh? I love Whitehall Lane (pre 2005) and there is no excuse for a 2005 to taste like this.

2 hour decant, and it improved greatly over time. Nice nose of dark fruit. Blackberry, spice and smooth tannins on the palate. Long finish with good acidity. Paired with steak. I prefer the 2005 Whitehall Lane Reserve, but this was an enjoyable bottle.

I'm a big Whitehall Lane fan. My past bottle from other vintages have remarkable....at least 90+ IMO. I buy several bottles from each year, and have not been disappointed until the 2005 vintage. The wine was still very good (87-88), but not a typical Whitehalll Lane. Not a "big Cali Cab". Hoping th 2006 and beyonds get back to what I remember.

Decanted 2 hours. Nice nose of cassis with some tobacco and a little oak. Medium bodied with decent dark fuit and notes of tobacco and a slight menthol component. Quite short on the finish with a bit more tannin than i was expecting based on other reviews. Definitely smooth and refined in the typical Whitehall Lane style but just not as good as other WL wines i have had although i usually buy the reserve bottlings. May improve a little over the next couple of years (87+ pts).

1/2 bottle consumed at The Capital Grille (Kansas City). Interesting that this bottle featured a screw cap. I am a fan of Whitehall Lane - and this did not disappoint. Initial aroma is dominated by vanilla and toast - but then settles down after some time in the glass and the dark fruit becomes more noticeable. The tannins are certainly well represented - but the wine is not overly astringent - just enough to stand up to the perfectly prepared beef tenderloin. I agree with the professional review that this wine should age nicely for the next 3-4 years.

I can only describe this as a little of everything and allot of nothing. Not complex at all. Now, having said that, it is a very drinkable and likeable wine but at the same time a forgetable wine. Nothing in abundance so nothing stands out. Best I could do on this one.
Day two: Held up nicely yet pretty much of the same however a good bit more spice today. A very drinkable and a good happy hour wine, yet not at 30.00/btl

From half bottle. Nice nose of cassis, black cherry and vanilla. Medium round palate with little tannin and fruit forward with bright pure fruit of mostly cassis and currants, touch of herbaceousness, creamy vanilla and charcoal. Medium finish with some red fruits and earth. Nicely done, but not too terribly complex for the price.

She was waiting for us at the table poured into a decanter. I was asked to taste it right off the bat... I reluctantly took a sip (I could still taste toothpaste and mouthwash) and sure enough, I couldn't tell anything. It seemed fat and dumb. I smiled and nodded. Ah hah! Some pellegrino to 'wash up'. OK, here we go... the nose didn't reveal much. In the mouth it was OK- fruit, ripe black fruit. Thick and sweet concentrated fruit with a bit of persistence on the finish too. Some acidity, but the smoothly polished berries really had things covered. Fast forward 2 maybe 3 Hours in??? After a Negroni cocktail, 2 glasses of Taittinger brut la Francaise and 2 glasses of an '05 Chassagne-Montrachet RED (yup,) the notes got a little fuzzy. We drank these with steaks, the girls had fillets, Jon and I had Kansas City Strips. The acidity had apparently taken a stroll up Whitehall Lane and was waiting to gracefully dance with my steak and truffle fries. At the end of dinner I dug my nose in there and pulled out what I thought was a DISTINCT scent of sheet rock. Jon, who earlier had picked out 'Peanut Butter' in the Taittinger (AWESOME!) said he smelled it too, but that is was actually joint compound (He can build a house in his sleep). There was such a strong and unmistakable aroma of fresh joint compound on sheet rock it was remarkable, wine never ceases to amaze. For under forty dollars it wouldn't be bad; but it was $89 off the menu so... Plus, really ripe wines don't seem to be my style, but tasting different things is fun. Here's to looking.

Decanted for about 1 hour and then poured into a Spig Bordeux glass. The wine has a deep purple/red color. The nose has tabacco, leather and dark cassis/currant (not sure which - but dark flavors). The wine explodes with chocalate, plum and good fruit. The wine is bright and is held together with very light tannins and offers a smooth finish. Nothing over the top about the wine - just an easy mid-week drinker. 88-90 - drink now.
