Opened the cork and it broke which means it was stored correctly or the cork was bad. The taste was somewhat sour, fruit had diminished very high in alcohol.

Strong tannins and acidity. Very hard to compare to the 2003, Christian's 20th vintage. Best to try again two years from now. When you get past your first nose your second nose will reveal the characteristic Dominus even more so with the distinct Dominus tasting qualities.

The wine is still a little tight and does not show well given 15 years age. Good plum color but it takes a good while in the decanter to begin to open up. I wish I had held it another 5 years although a decent wine as it now.

This drank beautifully for an off-vintage with rich but not overripe dark fruit flavors. Full-bodied with lots of glycerin, it builds to a satisfying complex finish with notes of dark spices and intense blackberries. Pretty much ready but will definitely hold.

Color was dark purple in the glass with clear, long legs. On the nose, black pepper & cedar, wet leaves. On the nose, blackberry, spicy. Medium tannins & acid. Alcohol guess at 14%.
Liked this very much. After the wine had another 30 minutes of air it resembled the 1988 Dominus that was also part of our blind tasting.

Nose is subdued, red currant, remarkable heat. Very viscous appearance, heavy staining legs. Palate is closed upon first pour but seems to possess the stuffing to open up. Notable heat and ironically a hint of herbal acidity on the mid. Very soft on the palate, tannins are perfectly integrated. 90+

Decanted for 2 1/2 hours prior to drinking. Enjoyed with a beef tenderloin with a red wine/port mushroom reduction sauce...exquisite match!! Dark ruby red in color, beautiful nose and palate characterized with dark fruits, slate and leather. Beautifully balanced with an average finish. Nice wine but definitely not up to the typical level of Dominus.

Robust notes of purple fruit with hints of green pepper and spices. Great concentration. tannins were smooth and fully integrated, suggesting this wine is in perfect drinking condition. No need for decanting. Despite its age there are good energy and freshness. A cab Sauvignon blend that displays left bank power with right bank roundness.

Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party (Porter Creek, Mpls, MN): Dark red, borderline very dark red color. Pop and pour, drank 1 glass over an hour. Loved the nose, open and earthy, minerals, dusty, cherry, plum, focused, pencil lead, leather. The palate was more vibrant and energetic than my last bottle, medium bodied, elegant, dusty minerals, graphite, licorice, leather, cherry. The tannins seem much more resolved and integrated as well. Long finish. Best bottle to date. 93+pts.

Not quite as good as the bottle that I had at my neighbors a couple years ago. Decanted for about 2.5 hours. Very nice nose has classic Cabernet dark fruit note, graphite and some earth - leans more to old world than new. Full bodied palate still had plenty of dark fruits and supple tannins. some tertiary aromas of saddle leather and floral notes crept in. Medium/Long finish. Well made wine for sure, just missing that something special to push the score higher.

Much more Bordelais than Napa...which is not such abad thing. Very dark red. Nose not big. Subtle plum seems the dominant fruit. Very good, not close to great. This was a bottle signed by Ed. Moueix 5 years ago that led to our visit to Petrus.

Back, Back in the USofA (StrEat Restaurant, Austin, Texas): The most modern and "Cali" in style, this dark ruby to purple wine nose reveled ripe and rich fruit ,chocolate, baking spice, green pepper, and bright cherry. On the palate tasters note jammy blackberry and cherry pie filling, with licorice and chocolate. Well structured and tannic, showing considerable oak it finished with medium plus length. Note that this was supposed to be a 1999 to keep an every four year theme, but the 99 disappeared so we went to the next millenium here.

This wine isn't as good as many other Dominus vintages but it isn't bad - and it's coming into its own now. Not much fruit but what there is black fruit, plenty of secondary flavours of tobacco and tar. Length is moderate. It develops more the longer the wine airs - we started at 60 mins and drank it over the evening finishing about 2 hours later. I'd decant for longer next time.

Dark red color, no bricking. Dark fruits on the nose, plum and cassis, but tobacco and leather predominate. Palate is medium depth with round but prominant tannins. Spice on the finish. This certainly does not show a ton of fruit, but if you are looking for some deep secondary character, this will do it. Very nice. Amended on 5/14/11. This wine has continued to evolve over the last few days showing much more fruit now. Dark cherry aromas are now prominant on the nose along with those previously noted. The palate has continue to integrate even further. This was lovely to begin with, a solid 91, but it has improved to 92+ to 93pts now.

No notes taken. Popped and poured in the garden with the neighbors. This is a surprisingly good bottle of wine given the vintage. The taste is a great combination of dark fruit and chocolate. The texture is silky smooth. Understated and elegant. Not a wow, but fun.

A little austere, sure, but this still has a lot to offer: besides the currant and crushed berry, there's licorice, olive, some bell pepper (especially on the finish), and peppery allspice and cinnamon. Drinking great in its 10th year, and would last probably 5 more. Definitely has more Old World character than most California wines. A nice mature Dominus, remarkable from a weak vintage.

Churchill's: PlumpJack/Cade (Maumee, OH): Popped and poured. Nice nose - soft candied (in a good way) plum, Christmas spice, a little herbal and medicinal greenness. Smooth, elegant, CREAMY. Silk. Perfect age. Not at all heavy. Integrated tannins, fairly light, medium acidity, medium+ body. The whole package really comes together here. I'm amazed that the reviews here are so lukewarm, but I tend to prefer the leaner and greener style. $105

20 Years of Dominus - Part 6 - The Early 2000s: I rather liked this wine a lot. Like the 1998, from a weak Napa vintage, but Moueix did great in 2000. Iodine, blackberry, a distinct iron metallic/fresh blood smell and flavor. Tobacco and licorice and good acidity. Shockingly good follow up to the 1998.

Popped and poured right out of the cellar. Tight with dark purple color. Decanted over 2 hours. Nose of crushed dark fruit, strawberry, vanilla, milk chocolate. Taste of licorice, some wood, smoke but no tar. Little bit of heat at first that never quite disipates but still a very smooth wine. Medium length finish. Worth the price? That's a tough call. I'm curious to try the better vintages. No score but I'd call it Very Good.

This wine clearly has the largest bid ask spread between the amateurs and the professionals of any wine in a long time(just have a look at the community notes and compare with the IWC of 90 and RP of 96). Being an amateur, I completely side with their underwhelming sense of this wine. Yes, it has a wonderful deep color and the nose is an eleqant bouquet of currants and herbs, but... The mid-palate is well integrated but not special and the finish is short and uninteresting. why do all the big name reviewers get so excitedt

DUO, Miami Medoc BYO Wine Dinner (DUO, S Miami Avenue, Miami, FL): Ringer #3. Flight 5 #2. Abe horowitz's ringer. Abe thought the lean 2000 Cali vintage would compare favoroubly to the Medoc wines. Ellen and I agree. To us it was clearly preferable to its French counterparts. It drinks much better than its press, and compares favorably to more heralded vintages of Dominus.Ripe rich opulent wine.

Nose of sweet red cherries and coffee led to somewhat muted fruit harsh tannins. After around 30 minutes the wine improved and the fruit was much more apparent and the wine matched well with red meat and strong blue-veined cheese. The tannins were still very apparent. For the money, not impressive.

Drank from my last magnum. Very unresolved and immature, but very promising. Extremely acidic with bitter dark fruits, spice, and wet earth. The alcohol level in the wine was not well integrated as it finished long with a sharp burn in the back of the tongue. As it ages, it will mellow out and the alcohol potency will decline, and hopefully give way to a beautiful wine since all of the components of a champion are there. Mark my words that this wine 8-10 years from today will be a knockout.

The nose was slightly floral with hints of chocolate and toasty oak. The flavors were earthy, woody and some chocolate. The wine also had a long finish which was slightly sweet for a few seconds then developed into a smooth dark fruit taste.

Winestreet Tastes Spain and California: Ruby red color. The nose showed red fruit, coffee, and earthy elements. In the mouth this shows dark cherry fruit and licorice. I would call this just barely medium bodied. The finish lingers nicely. This is the fourth time I have tasted this wine, and have enjoyed it every time. However, tasting it in the context of other vintages really helped understand the limitations of this vintage. This should definitely be served with food.

Consumed with duck and beef tenderloin on New Year's Eve. I had tasted this at a local store in mid-December and thought it tasted great -- even out of a plastic cup. I shared this bottle with seven other people, and the focus was really on the celebration, not the wine. The nose was very impressive. The wine was mouth-coating and full-bodied in the mouth. Plenty of fruit with a hint of expresso/chocolate. I didn't rate this at the time, but I would say somewhere from 92-94 on this night. A great contribution to the celebration.

Young Dominus Vertical: Wine tasting. Starts with floral and black cherry components. Same fruit on palate with spice hints. Tannins are well integrated for now, I think this is already entering its peak drinking window and should hold at this level for close to a decade.

At 10 years old, this wine still drank very well. Went great with a nice filet mignon. Fully integrated and still lots of fruit. Color was still very consistent. Still has time left.

Outstanding, did not decant maybe could have been better if I had. Flavors just lingered and the finish held a long time. I might give my last bottle another year but not beyond that.

No notes taken. Popped and poured in the garden with the neighbors. This is a surprisingly good bottle of wine given the vintage. The taste is a great combination of dark fruit and chocolate. The texture is silky smooth. Understated and elegant. Not a wow, but fun.

Good but not great. A bit of tobacco with blackberry. Light tannins, with yet a sharp edge.

The bottle opened very thin and flat. However we decanted and let sit for 1-2 hours. Paired with Rack of lamb and twice-baked potatoes. The wine opened up beautifully into a complex, fruit-filled experience.

Uninteresting, bland wine that got beat out by two other Napa wines at half it's price. Fun to try it but can't justify paying the price for it.

This time I decanted for 3 hours before drinking. Clearly helped and the complexity--herbs, chocolate, and tar--come thru much better. Still I stay with my earlier tasting notes.

Good, expected more from it. Wine seemed a little flat nothing to grab hold of you middle of road tannins and fairly complex with a long finish. Not the best not the worst but for the money there are much better wines out there. I will have to try a 99 or 01 and see how they comapre.

From a label with a formidable reputation, one would have expected more.
Clean, pure fruit with little stuffing or nuance; a simple smooth finish and hollow midpalate.
