Annual Jadot Dinner - this time with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago): A sensational bottle of this wine and captures all the upside of the vintage with none of the troublesome downside. Gorgeous, intense nose of an array of orchard fruits with chalk, mineral and light honey layers. Palate has towering proportion and pin point grace of a classic Montrachet. Long finish. Bravo.

Put this with a label from a more “heralded” producer and people would be falling over themselves telling you how it’s one of the greatest wines they have had. Alas, Jadot will never quite have that status.
The colour is golden, but the nose and palate are absolutely fine. Served blind and decanted for 3 hours in advance, which helped it open according to the server. Make no mistake, this is a huge wine, meal in itself. Full bodied, I suspect there was some new oak here but it’s well integrated, and a long finish. Quite a lush wine with medium acidity and definitely not a lean year (I called 02/05). A persistent finish and a wine that got nicer closer to room temperature. Just delightful. From BV

Louis Jadot (& Clair-Daü) Dinner with Frédéric Barnier (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Blind in vertical. Sometimes this wine has been brilliant, sometimes not. Tonight's bottle was dark and advanced to start with an oxidative aromatic start. Flavors were fresher, brighter, and more interesting, but nowhere close to the wonderful 2005 and 2009 vintages in the next glass. And while this seemed to get slightly better with more air, it never lived up to the standard of previous great bottles.

Champagne Dinner in Champaign (NAYA - Champaign IL): A wine that has been frustratingly inconsistent, but tonight's bottle was excellent. Robust, powerful and certainly fresh with pear, poached pear, sweet spice, toasted almonds from start-to-finish with floral and mint hints. Rich and still complex. I really enjoyed this bottle, others enjoyed it even more (I believe it earned 97 JT points).

From Jeroboam, decanted just prior to pour. Still very light coloured, even with a residual tinge of green. Initial impression: closed, little nose, palate slightly hollow. After 15 minutes started to open up, classic fruit flavours, very gentle oak, reserved. 30 minutes: real expression of classic white burgundy. What a treat. Was left wishing for a bigger pour. To see if the improvement continued. On this showing I believe it would have.

Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth - Chicago, IL): Reserved aromatics and showing way too advanced on the palate. More honey and toffee notes than you'd like and texturally flat.

Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Barely forthcoming nose to start, with more robust flavors with plenty of ripe/ mature peach and apple. Good weight, but not quite showing Grand Cru density of complexity. A wine I've found to be very inconsistent, this bottle was very advanced and a poor performer. Not sure whether to say it showed as "89 points" tonight or was oxidized. Very disappointing vs other excellent bottles I've had in the past, but better than a few duds.

Shows some age more than expected with light butterscotch aromas. Shows older than expected and a night lean and tight. Drinkable, but disappointing. Seems too old already sadly.

I haven't had much luck with Jadot Montrachet. This bottle was sound, and drank fine, but was not impressive at all. At least it wasn't premoxed, as five of the last six have been.

Chicago Wine Flock...Burgundy Al Asks "Is it Grand Cru?" (My home - Chicago IL): Served blind to the group, this was correctly identified as the Montrachet (vs the Villages). Floral with ripe apple and excellent concentration and power. Everything in great proportion and balance. Open only 30 minutes before serving, this kept getting better in glass.

After five pox'd bottles over the years, I really opened this expecting to pour it down the drain. Surprise, surprise, no premox. Deep, rich, and as would be expected this was too young. I thought it was decent, another lover of white burgs gave it more credit than I did. So the dilemma, given premox, is wait, or keep opening and drinking young.

Sharp on the nose with faint soapy notes initially. A little less wood and more density would make for a better result. Nonetheless a reasonable effort for Jadot

Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Capella Hotel Dining Room - Washington DC): Popped and poured. Started with great spice and gobs of ripe apple, toasted almonds, sweet spice....just far more advanced than should be. While this freshened up over the course of several hours, it was never nearly as good as prior bottles. 85 points to start, 90 points an hours after opened. Perplexing wine, but of course that's all too common with white Burgundy. Inconsistent with other great bottles of this same wine, from this same case.

Annual Chicago winos visit - Dugat Py Chambertins, DRC RSVs, SQN and etc. (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This was totally outshined by the Sauzet version. Initially very ripe and a bit cloying. There is also a hint of oxidative note. With air, freshen up nicely by gaining mineral expression. Dense yellow citrus fruit driven palate impression, lemon curd, smoke, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, dense yellow citrus fruit driven palate impression, slightly lacking acidity and sweet medium long finish. IMO, too may white Burgundies don’t get the second chance after the initial judgement of premox. I highly recommend to decant, as the wines often become lighter in color and fresher in expression.

Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Paris Club - Chicago IL): I haven't had this wine in 2 years, so am very pleased with how it is progressing. Lots of lemon, lime and lemon custard aromas to start. Slightly more tropical notes emerged with more time, but at its core this wine retained great fruit, concentration and energy. The last sip, almost 5 hours after the bottle was opened, was the very best.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago IL): Lots of floral and spice support for lush, ripe apple with tropical hints and some roasted almond character. Similarly lush and forward flavor profile, but there is sneaky acidity and minerality providing length, finesse and nuance from middle through long finish. I don't think I've had this since shortly after release. I like where it's heading but I think it still needs plenty of time to shed more baby fat.

So many thoughts and descriptors - light nuts, light yellow olives, super intense and alive. Energy and life on the palate. It flies all around your mouth. Creamed corn and sweetness. Wet side walk. Holy crap this was awesome.

My first Montrachet. Tight at first, eventually tropical aromas poured out in addition to crushed flowers and butterscotch. My god, there is amazing depth here. The weight is enormous but not tedious with serious length. No premox issue here. I kept some in the glass for a bout 3 hrs where it only continued to open up and express. I am so grateful to have tried this wine.

'88 Northern Rhones at Siggy's: When popped and poured for the kitchen helpers prior to dinner this seemed really nice, but by dinner darkness and premox had overtaken it. My notes from early on show an expressive nose with tropical fruit, grapefruit, honey, lemon and what I labeled Drambuie. Compact flavors and coarse texture on the palate with nice acidity and a very nice finish. Makes me wonder how great a proper bottle of this could be.
