  • 1972 Bordeaux horizontal tasting: First time trying the 72 Margaux. This was very light but fairly acidic, reflecting the challenge of the vintage to get the fruit to some sort of ripeness. Perhaps Margaux added less sugar than others, and adding some of their own 71 woukd not have helped much with the concentration either…On the other hand and unlike many of the other Bdx the wine was very clean on the palate. An “honest” 72 Bdx?

  • Drank this at Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine to celebrate a fellow wine mate's birthday.

Dark orange to light brown in colour, giving the age of the wine away. On the nose there are notes of tea leaves, orange peel, plums, incense, young strawberries and herbal notes. On the palate the primary have all but faded, replaced by bark, tobacco, cherries and orange peel.

Smooth, delicate with some levels of intensity, this wine has really aged gracefully over the last 40 years. Very rare to get an old wine of such quality. Overall the nose has performed better than the palate, and impressively the wine is still pleasant and charming after all this years.

A very refined wine with beautiful flora notes and feminine style.

  • Beautiful, mature red.
Immediately on pouring the perimeter filled with a heady cassis scent. The nose remained very fresh, intense and complex - amazingly so! Cassis, rhubarb, strawberry and dark gooseberries, after an hour more deliciously savoury, winter stew, spicy lentil soup, smoky charcuterie. The palate however never caught up, initially following the nose but subsequently very thin and faded, certainly nothing musty or unpleasant, just nothing much there.

  • This is just perfect.

I have recently experienced more and more of the 70 decade wines open up and be extremely rewarding and this was the icing on the cake, WOW!

The colour was like a young Burgundy, completely clear with a distinctive red flash.

The nose first detects a bit of strawberry, red fruits, sandal wood and smoke. Then after air, the smoke, char, earth, cedar wood explodes!

The palate same story. Tobacco, red fruits, green bellpepper, this turned to dark cherries mixed with red summer ripe fruits, charred wood, ashy earth floor, white pepper. Genius!

The bottle was in pristine condition, a fill, cork has done it job and the label showed a perfect cellaring and the drinking window hit just right. So maybe it was cosmos giving me a thumps up, I don't know. But this sure was a bliss!

  • For more than 40 years of age this wine is still young, lively tannin comes with berries and plum. Floral and feminine in style. Decanted for 2 hours and her power and nose start to come off. A ready to enjoy wine with important ones.

  • Broadbent in 1997: lean, twisted, ...nose and flavor better than expected ... ; in 2000: some sweetness, a dash of fruit, tolerable acidity ... 2* - myself in 2013: miracle of softness and complexity; not the best, but a charming bottle of a neglected year.

  • Mouldy nose, very thin on the palate. Not oxidized or too old, I think this is just not a good wine.

  • Colour is very light garnet with tawny on the rim. Nose lacks concentration but has typical Margaux aromas, like cedar, coffee, tar and leather together with ripe plummy fruit and sweet spice like cinammon. Yet ... the volume is turned down... In the mouth it is very weak almost watery, lacks depth of flavour and is almost watery. The wine is not dead, not even tired, it is just very lean and lacking in concentration but I believe it was always like that. Looks like it was never great though it has impressive keeping qualities. Tannins are melted, acidity is quite high but finish is short. Definitely a mature Bordeaux wine but very weak.

  • Christie's Pre-Sale Tasting (Amsterdam): Old and light, little to it on the nose, light but smooth, good length. Not bad.
