After reading the notes here, I was expecting something dominated by fruit and on its way out, but I got a pleasant surprise. On the nose, cherry candy and eucalyptus; on the palate, tart raspberry, black cherry, and raisins, with smooth cocoa on the short finish, and good acidity. The powerful tannins that I have always found in younger Turleys were almost completely absorbed, showing only a little at the end. I like the monster tannic style, but I also like what this has turned into -- I still wouldn't call it light or subtle, but it is more nuanced than I would have expected. The short finish is the only thing that keeps me from scoring it higher. This has to be near or at its peak, but based on the hint of tannin still remaining it probably has a couple more years before it starts to go downhill. I am impressed; I didn't think this would age well.

Needs a bit of air, but interestingly probably a bit over the hill at the same time. Opens up and gives more and better fruit and vanilla after an hour, but could really use more fruit given the still big structure and the fact that its zin. Not bad by any means, still yummy, but drink soon as its not getting better, its getting less Turley.

Nice bright med ruby, vanilla-scented red fruit nose, tart for a zin w/ barely detectable tannins and alcoholic heat on palate. This bottle is quite different from the dull ruby fermented raisin juice character wine; hopefully some premox entered the picture last bottle and the remaining bottles will have retained some charm as this bottle conveys.

Typical Turley in all its richness and bravado. Still had aging potential despite CT recommendations and required a good few hours decanting and warming to room temperature. Beautifully supple with explosive dark black berries on the nose, tar, oak, and cedar aromas enrich the chewy palate. Finish improves as it sits.

This is the last of 3 bottles within the last year and a half....everyone has been super. Shows classic Turley briary Zinberryness, white pepper spice, little smoky cherry plum. Still very youthful with intense spice, slight alc heat....aged up well with smooth Port-like dark berry fruit, dusty wood spice, little smoked strawberry jam. Would like a little less alc fume....but that doesn't take away anything. Just think....this is the cheapest Turley made.....and it is aging and tasting very well!

Maybe I'm biased since one of my best friends introduced me to Turley but I really like this wine. It may be pushing past it's prime since the flavors were better an hour ago but I was also pairing it with Italian at the time. In summary, I'll be buying some newer bottles because these Turleys are not your typical zinfandel and recommend checking them out...

Time has served this wine well, tasted at the winery 5 years ago and all the briary tangy alcoholic tendencies have subsided to smoother, sweeter more complex fruit, dark purple in color, medium dark fruit nose with a jammy, fruit driven palate, delicious

Dark color with a pleasant easy nose of pungent red berries with a hint of cherry. Easy drinking and not hot at all being 15.3 % alcohol, which is low by Turley standards, with ample fruit and a nice all around balance. Not spectactular just good QPR, and still holding its own.

Lots of bright red fruit, but not as lush as the higher-end Turley zins. A bit acidic--probably better with food than on its own. A very enjoyable wine, but not a blockbuster.

Was hoping for a little more. Drank over dinner of grilled pork tenderloin and asparagus. Didi not decant, but did open 45 minutes before dinner and let sit in the bottle. The typical Turley Zin flavors were a bit muted by too much heat (and I love Turley and rarely find the heat to be overbearing). Next time I will give it a bit more time to decant and let the heat blow off.

Almost black in color with tons of viscous legs in the glass. Restrained nose of blackberry and cranberry. The flavor profile was also pretty muted with some dry black cherry and vanilla lurking. There was substantial heat throughout the finish as well. Most of the bottle remains, so I'll see how it's doing on Day 2 and hope for a little better showing, but this did not impress as much as previous bottles. Day 2: The heat has subsided for the most part, but the fruit has also left town. Oh well....on to the 2002's.

Consumed at home with Puttanesca sauce. Bright disc. Deep-to-opaque ruby/purple robe with red/violet rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of blackberries, vanilla, brier, dust, pepper and boysenberries. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, extremely well-integrated alcohol, a supple mouth texture and generous ripe tannins. Long, smooth finish. This is an elegant, food-friendly Turley bottling which should drink well over the next 4-5 years. I previously underestimated this wine!

Not decanted - brought out to dinner with Spiegelau glasses in tow...and consumed with rib eye steak. THIS is why I buy Turley. Awesome bang for the buck, and incredible value. Right out of the gates, this wine was showy, dark, pure and long. Full bodied and lush, this reavealed cassis, vanilla and well calculated tannins - the wealth of fruit concealed any hotness I would have expected from a stated 15+% EtOH. Okay this is going to sound like a troll, but this bottle was focused and dare I say...elegant in its own way. Here's a good sign - the bottle was consumed faster than the food. The 2001 version is much more balanced and integrated than its 2000 sibling. Fun, fun stuff...and worth every penny. Get some!!

High-octane zin. Reminiscent of a ripe Shiraz, but containing enough cassis and zinberry to set it apart. A touch hot, but certainly not too bad. Tons of sweet ripe blueberry, oak, and creamy vanilla. Fun for one night (like so many others I've had)...much more pleasing than the 2000 version and decent with New York corned beef sandwiches.

I sit here drinking this Turley Zin listening to my just received Warren Zevon album. Despite the tragedy, there is something right about an artist knowing what it inevitable but having time for one last effort.
It was dumb luck, but this is the perfect wine for the music. It is like Zevon. Loud, over the top, thoughtful, and rough in a way where you can sense all of the parts.
Huge nose of American oak and vanilla with super-ripe crushed blackberries. Touch of chocolate, more oak, and slight smokiness. Warren would be like this massive palate of black cherry liqueur, dark fruits, smoked herbs, vibrant mouth puckering tannins, charcoal, and roasted meat.
This wine is too much, too strong, too mouth-puckering, too loud, too in your face, and too rustic. I love it.
God bless you, Warren. It may not be pina colada at Trader Vics, but you would like this wine.

($30) This was consumed outdoors with BBQ at the Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX. The nose seemed to get blown away by the breeze, and it was a bit hot outside for red wine, but this showed a rich, sweet, fruity body with decent balance. The Carlisle showed it up, though.

Tasted at the winery. Bright disc. Medium/deep ruby robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately-intense vanilla, black cherry and spice box aromas. Tasted at the Turley tasting room in Paso Robles on 4/21/03. $22 from the tasting room.
This zin is a blend of their "younger" vines, averaging 30-40 years old. Most of the grapes come from Napa, though some are from the Pesenti Vineyard in Paso.
On the nose, this one has aromas of plum, berries, spice and oak. Especially oak. The interesting thing is that the oak was more prominent on the nose than on the tongue.
In the mouth, this one is an over the top fruit bomb, with plum and red and black fruits. A medium length, spicy finish. Good acidity in this wine, but to me the fruit was over the top, and out of balance because of that.
I did not purchase any of this wine, it was just not enjoyable to me. Give this one time for the fruit to settle down, and I may turn out to be disappointed in the end. However despite its limited availability (it is a Turley, though one of the more available Turleys), I was not disappointed to leave these for someone else. Those who enjoy over the top fruit bombs may enjoy this more.
