Probably I was more lucky than previous buddies as my bottle was at perfect maturity. Lovely already at opening it has become even better in one hour. Fresh and compote black berries, spice, eucalyptus, balsamic and some meaty note. Silky tannins, good structure/concentration. Really enjoyable bottle with some potential remained. Paired with rare fillet steak.

During a 2002 vs. 2012 tasting. This was decent but not great, showed that smaller wines from smaller vintages should have been consumed between age 10-15. The aromas were lovely, good tertiary Medoc complexity. The palate however showed the rainy 2002 vintage. A bit diluted and the tannins a little grainy.

Opened 5h prior. Farmyard and spice on the nose. Recessed fruit on the palate with some spice at first (this didn't last for long), soft leathery tannin, farmyard, and a 'flat' end. More cherry fruit emerged on the late palate as it opened in the glass. Later glasses showed more fruit with hints of blackberry and it perked up a lot with a rare steak when the tannins were appropriate and the wine was a good partner. A reminder that wine from France is produced to drink with food. This was not a great year and the wine is now in decline but this was the last of a dozen bought en primeur and we have had a good deal of pleasure from it. 86 on its own and 88 with food - 87 on average.

Pretty much as my note of December 2014 but less restrained when first opened. Good claret from a modest year but it needs a few hours to open (we gave it 4 hours). It is a food wine, of course, and was good with beef but it was also drinking well with cheese later and was soft and fruitier on its own after a couple more hours.

Once again, too restrained when opened - dusty tannins very evident. 3 Hours later, it had softened and showed plums and plum skins at first plus the same cherry/cherry skin fruit described earlier as it opened in the glass. Much better with food (ribeye) and drinking really well after 4 hours by which time the bottle was empty....... Has life in it yet.

Prompted by the comments of others, I thought I had better not hold on to this too long. Much relieved to find it still has a good nose, decent 'sweet' fruit and balance with soft integrated tannins. I don't think it is going to improve but it is a nice mouthful now, for a 2002. Very good with rare roast beef.

Two years ago I was pleasantly surprised, but not this time. The fruit was never the wine's strongpoint, but now it has jammified into a bitter, sour mixture that is rather like a dry redcurrant jelly. The hollowness is worse than before and even the trademark Cantemerle creaminess can't save it. The "fruit" tastes over-extracted, over emphasised, making matters worse. At 10 euros, this was cheap for a CC, but whereas the La Louvière 01 tasted a couple of nights ago represents outstanding value, this doesn't. I've had every vintage of Cantemerle since the 89: this is the worst.

Disappointing at first but much better 3 hours after decanting. Initial leathery middle and end but this softened gradually and integrated well with food. Cherries developed on the palate, as in my previous note, but increasingly maraschino rather than bitter, stony cherries. Much, much better with food (sirloin steak). Perhaps there is bottle variation but I think it is perhaps time to drink the rest of the case while it still gives pleasure.

Monthly tasting club LTC; No real theme (@ GH): Quite complex bouquet with cassis, red berries, chocolate, herbs and spices, good oak and some rustic impressions. On the palate there is a lot of beautiful oak, but it masks the rest. There is fairly astringent and high red fruit acidity and green bell pepper. Overall not really bad, but also not a wine I will look out for. The bouquet is the best part.

A very satisfying Bordeaux wine - not exciting but very good indeed! Decent color. Nose was very good, classic bordeaux with a hint of cool syrah. Palate was developed but still some fruit, especially cherries. Cedar wood. Fairly long grassy finish and a bit of crushed grapeseed that I fear will not evaporate with age. Clearly a colder year, but by no means a bad wine. Drink before 2012.
