Great bottle, fill into neck, great colour, and the cork gave a nice hiss and pop on removal suggesting a great seal as well. The wine was quiet for 15 minutes or so, and then absolutely blossomed. The bouquet included all the buzzwords associate with Pauillac, and Lalande in particular, with red cedar, forest floor, damp leather, lead pencil, chocolate, and rich blackberry and red cherry. Spicy cigar tobacco with traces of smoke and ash emerges as well. The palate benefitted with decanting and grew into a robust and fully mature Pauillac with creme-de-cassis, blackberry, chocolate covered cherries, and sweeter cherry fruit in the finish. The wine was still well structured with tannin, acid, and fruit flavor all stable and well balanced. Just excellent and so happy to have had such a perfect bottle.

The fill wasn't too great. Only a mid-shoulder fill but the cork was in great shape and came out in one piece.
The initial nose was promising something incredible for the night! And boy did it deliver!
This had 4 stages - both the nose and the palate.
First stage - intense (green) acidity with all kinds of tropical fruit and then some dusty tobacco wood.
2nd stage - HERE COMES THE CASSIS. This is so lovely - so elegant but still powerful. Blackberries, Creme de Cassis, cedarwood, a bit dusty earth. lovely.
3rd stage - it's all about the tobacco - now the tobacco wants to join the party. All the other notes are there but tobacco definitely wants to be the main focus.
4th stage - everything intertwined and settled into their places. Fantastic! I really really loved this bottle!

Pichon Lalande Tasting: (IN fill, reconditioned at the Chateau in 1981, Adouzed for 2 hours). Initially more dark-fruited than the -28, complex nose, minerals, ‘youngish’; In the mouth: fresh wine with still much fruit, quite angular and strict, actually more so than the -28, surprisingly big bodied. After 45 minutes it falls slowly apart. 93p for the first half hour.

Although I will not score this wine, because it is too old for real pleasure, it was in fact really impressive. The bouquet showed sweet spices and celery. On the palate chocolate, celery and reductive flavors, completely dissolved tannin with still some bite and a good balance between sweetness and acidity. Too old but still well structured.

Red-brown in the glass. Pop-corn and capucino notes on the nose. Broad, dense and powerful, yet elegantly light on its feet. Complex, balanced and harmonious. A hair longer on the aftertaste and this would have been perfect.

Wines for the Acker Merrall Bicentennial Auction (The Pool - New York NY): Walk around tasting. Lots of earth, cigarbox, with fully matured memories of black fruit. Certainly very interesting and enjoyable, but a wine I consider more interesting than tasty.

Colabruin. Klassieke rijpe Bordeaux-neus. Flink wat maggi in de geur. In de mond nog een verbazingwekkend goede structuur met mooie tannines.

31 Vintages of Pichon Lalande 1928-2005; 12/16/2008-12/17/2008 (IOD, London): Still quite deeply coloured, it looked vigorous so no surprise at the big assertive sweet nose, some medicine, some violets, a bit dilute on the palate, but this was very pretty and the finish lingered long and attractively
