Popped and poured. Bought from a store a couple years back. Same impression as BDEBLANK — almost amarone like, particularly on the nose with all of its dried fruit. The palate was dominated by tobacco and black cherry with some remaining freshness that saves this from drinking too port-like.

A beautifully mature Cabernet. PnP, not decant needed. Opens with black fruit, cassis, plum, light leather, earth, slight cedar. Lots of flavor with black fruits, cassis, anise, leather, earth, cedar. Beautiful balance. smooth silky , long finish. In a great drinking window. Based on this bottle, no hurry to open but drinking really well.

To late, at least for this bottle. Almost amarone-like upon opening. After decanting for an hour, much of that had blown away, but still came across as tired.

Last bottle of this. I see I posted an unenthusiastic TN in 2010 but can't recall how other bottles showed in the ensuing years. This bottle was fantastic. Decanted for a few hours.. No sign of bricking. Rich, lush, dark fruits, on the palate. Tannins resolved but I think this wine is on a long plateau. Pure pleasure. Can't imagine how good the Reserve must be.

Opened 2hrs prior to dinner & decided to slox-ox in BDX glass & btl the rest of the way. Color is opaque garnet red. Fantastic perfuse, tertiary BDX like scents of cigar box, pencil, dark fruit & underbrush. The cigar box & dark fruit carry over to the palate where we pickup licorice, herbs & a hint of stoniness. I love that this has structure and energy to support its massive concentration keeping it fresh and weightless in a relative since for the varietal. An outstanding 20yr old Bob Foley ( original winemaker) Pride Mt Cab that would stand up well in a flight of BDXs or CA classics like Dunn HM or Ridge Monte Bellow. Purchased on release from Pride many moons ago and still going strong. Can't imagine this getting any better nor dropping off soon. 14.5% alc was perfectly integrated and un-noticed. A good 1/2" of sludge at the bottom of the btl though:). A really fun Christmas Eve wine that our "kids" loved too!

pretty funky nose, so overripe it was like grape jelly. Alcoholic on the palate, still medium-bodied and concentrated. Cedar notes and almost honeydew melon.

Dark purple-red in color. Soaring aromas of ripe cassis, candied black raspberries, graphite, hint of ripe pipe tobacco and cedar. This still shows concentrated and smoky black small fruits, cocoa, medium (-) acidity, fully absorbed oak, fine tannins and a sweet and mineral tinged finish. Still 20 years young!

Delighted to say this is still going strong. Went great last night with Cathy's short ribs braised for 9+ hours. Tannins from this once-brooding, mountain-grown cab have finally resolved, and the flavors of cassis and plum were apparent, as well as scents of cedar and mocha. This was pure pleasure to enjoy over dinner at home and the rest of the evening as we "sheltered in place." I don't see it evolving further, but IMO it could remain on the plateau of maturity for 5 more years. We'll see; have 3 more left out of 6. Looking forward to drinking my last bottle (of 6) of 2001 Pride Cab Franc next, all of which I bought direct from the winery when I was on its mailing list.

Still plenty of life, but perhaps a bit better a few years ago in a more youthful state. Black cherry, cocoa powder, tobacco, fig, vanilla and sweet spices. Rich and juicy, but seems just a little tired on the back end.

It’s not old yet, but getting there, clearly in late stage, probably declined from its peak. A bit earthy, slightly unbalanced, and dull. Not my favorite bottle of Pride

Big mountain Cabernet with blue - black berry fruit, graphite and grippy ripe tannins. Finishes with a bit of heat, so drink on the cool side. Still very primary after 18 years, this will have a long life. Not showing any signs of age in the color either. Not sure this will ever soften and improve adding complexity as it’s so big in fruit and tannin. Probably best with a big piece of grilled beef.
On the third night open this wine finally softened and filled in showing juicy blackberry fruit, a bit of mocha, softish ripe tannins and no sign of heat. Delicious.

Double decanted this at 4PM and started drinking it around 7PM at Ana & Josh's place. It showed a fair amount of sediment on the decant and doesn't need much air. Semi opaque ruby red with cherry red edges. Profuse aromas of; tobacco, cedar, expresso and berries. Love the BDX like nose! The mouth feel is sensual, resolved and yet still lifted. Rich, chocolate covered berries, cherries, raspberries, cedar, licorice, and spice on the palate. Big mountain fruit but not heavy or flabby. Delicious new world that is still in my wheelhouse and always makes Josh & Ana happy since they have fond memories of visiting Pride with us. These might go till 2020 and beyond but I doubt it improves from here on out. This likely hit its peak a few years ago. My last of 4 and quite good tonight.

huge wine, classic big calif cab with great fruit but moderate tannin on initial coravin. uncorked 2 weeks later and had mellowed after 2 hr decant, little dirty on the palate like old style St. Estephe. Probably 3-5 yrs from pea and will last a long time.

Double blind. Dark color. Notes of licorice, black fruit and herbs. Shows more ripeness as it sits, along with chocolate. Quite ripe on the palate- to the extent that it reminds me slightly of an Amarone- definitely trending towards prunes. Ripe fruit and chocolate carrying the finish. I believe we all guessed Napa sauvignon here.
Wow! Here's an amazing example of where the general bottling of an estate wine just might eclipse the "reserve". Perfect storage from this bottle bought on release revealed a pristine cork which revealed an eruption of aromas. Seductive notes of bing cherry, raspberry, and dark fruit and not a touch of earthiness in this 16-year-old. On the palate perfectly resolved tannins, a touch of acidity but well-rounded dark berry fruit, a touch of butterscotch and caramel and a long lingering finish. I wish i had more of this wine—oh wait—cellartracker shows I do have one more bottle. Hmmm…tomorrow?

violet color with slightest browning. Nose hint of baking spice, still fruity. Palate still fresh fruit, cherries, hint of peppery bite. Open on PnP. Really nice complexity, vibrant (purchased from winery recently), still had good life to it. 94 pts

P&P Dark garnet colour. On the nose the wine is much shyer compared to the display on the palate. I did not want to decant for several hours risking to loose what might be left in there. No worries. There is still lots going on. The wine is packed with ripe dark fruits and tertiary notes are present at about the same level. Some acidity which could probably carry the wine for another few years and just the right amount of oak makes this a very pleasant experience. At a great point right now.

Deep, dark reddish-purple in color with ever so slight clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of maturing ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries and plums with overtones of cedar and tobacco & earthy/dusty, spices, mocha, minerals, toasty oak & vanilla. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, maturing, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with cocoa, spices, earthy, minerals, toasty oak & vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & may be close to or at its peak of development.

Sadly, the last of my 2001 Pride Cabernet. This bottle drank extremely well and still had plenty of life, a few notches better than the previous two bottles. Fruit took center stage over the oak, which has receded to a slight herbal character. Killer wine, wish that pride wines were still made in this vein. Great job Mr. Foley.

Also tonight at Trio in Jackson Hole. PnP and singing from the get go. Tobacco leaf galore, raspberry, cedar, cassis, and smoke. Drinking great, no need to hold but I suspect this will be at this level for a good long while. Fortunately one left for another special occasion. Velvety and resolved. Great with Bison burgers and pizza.

Lovely rich beautiful bottle, with a touch of heat to it. My last one. I'm not sure it's got more than another 5 years on it, my guess is the unattractive qualities will come out as the fruit continues to fade.

This btl came directly from the winery a few months ago with obvious perfect provenance. I double decanted this at 4PM and we started drinking it around 6PM. It showed a fair amount of sediment on the decant leaving a low neck fill after I poured it back into the btl. I put the cork back in until we started drinking it around 6PM. The color is still dark crude with pretty cherry red edges. This has a powerful, in your face, nose of; tobacco, cedar, expresso and berries. Love the Pessac like the nose! The mouth feel is sensual and resolved. Rich, chocolate covered berries, cherries, raspberries, cedar, licorice, and spice on the palate. Big mountain fruit but not heavy or flabby. Rather, very focused and impressive. Excitingly fresh and vibrant. Long! Delicious and a perfect pairing with tenderloin tonight. I'm excited to have 2 more left and I plan on drinking them within the next 1-3 years. This is CA mountain Cab at its very best!

Second Sunday Group: 2001 CA cabs (Anvil Club): Deep opaque color. A bit reticent at first, dark berry and plum notes were eventually coaxed from the glass. Tannins are still quite firm here, with dark fruit, spice and vanilla flavors turning to red fruit through the finish.

Big fruit with nicely integrated tannins and a touch of age. Did not expect this to be so youthful as other 01 Napa cabs I've had have lost a good deal more fruit. Great right of the bottle. Continue to be impressed with Pride if you like the style of a big bold smooth easy drinking cab.

This started out with a huge floral, oak free, nose when I popped the cork. I noticed a decent amount sediment so I decided to double decant quick and put the cork back in since it smelled so great already. After back in the blt I ended up with a low neck fill left. Still smelling great. I took out the cork again an hour or two later and about 20 minutes before dinner and poured a glass. Gone was most of the lovely floral fruit from the nose to be replaced by burbon oak barrel smells. There was still fruit on the palate but it seemd like it had slipped a couple notch since my last tasting 3 years ago. The oak now seems more prevalent. I have three left. Next time I open one I won't decant and see if that helps? Maybe I gave this too much air? I'll try annother blt in the next 6-12 months.

Black ruby, barely fading at the edges. Opened up over 3 days. Initially, blackberry, currant, cherry, and slight cedar. Later, more black cherry and coffee. Big bodied, rich, and still chewy with ripe, wonderful, ample tannins on the long and delicious finish. This is still acting like a young wine, and is going great places. Wish I had more.

Awesome Dinner with Friends (Erasmus, SQN, Saxum, Pride, Dehlinger++) (Out and about): My last bottle of a bunch of these. This is still a big, young wine and not yet at peak. It keep developing. The nose is cassis, slight cedar, a bit of rosemary. Great lush texture. Still some firm tannins. Showing tight layering on the palate. Slight heat on the midpalate, but finishes beautifully. One of those Napa wines that will drink well on its 20th birthday and beyond. I remember a lot of people questioning if the oak would outlast the fruit. That is not the case, there is still some oak here, but a lot more fruit.

This is black with not a hint of bricking. Decanted and then the licorice, blackberry, and espresso are so expressive. Not quite silky, but nearly, at first sip. Then short, but sweet mid. Ends with medium tannins that tell you its going to be around for a while.

Coravin'd for2 hours in the glass. Very dark purple/black color, thin clear rim. Toasty oak, coffee and sweet berry jam on the nose lead to soft, rich and slightly hot flavors of mocha, ripe berries and plum. Nice texture, low acidity. Fully absorbed tannins would suggest that this be drunk soon. Nice wine but doesn't really sing "Napa Cab." Drink now through 2015

On the positive side, the appearance is youthful as is the taste. But it's incredibly oaky, too much for me and I am oak tolerant. It's lively, youthful and concentrated, so if you love oak, perhaps you'll like it. It's anonymous though. I wouldn't even know it was Cabernet Sauvignon if I didn't see the label.

Probably the best wine I've had this year and enjoyed during Thanksgiving. Deep purple color and wonderful fruit. Still has quite a bit of punch for a 12 year old wine and will probably last a few more years. Structure reminded me of the 2001 Mondavi Reserve Cab.
Out of the decanter this was herbal and structured with hints of fruit and classic earthy Cabernet character....the palate was medium + bodied, ripe but balanced and it really blossomed with time. Stacked against '99 monte bello, '01 Tanbark Hill, '02 Bin 707 and '02 KJ Napa Mtn., this was the wine I kept coming back to....as the night progressed, this got better and better....if I had more, I'd happily drink it over the next 3-5 years +...beautiful Cabernet.

Drank next to the 1998 Lafite, this showed relatively well. Needed three hours of vigorous decanting to round the initially harsh tannins. Rich fruit profile bordering on overly ripe and roasted. Cassis, blackberry jam, espresso, menthol. Medium finish.

Had my next-to-last bottle of this a little over a year ago and pretty much forgot about this one. Wow! It just keeps getting better. Cherries and smoke on the nose. Same components on the palate, along with some licorice and coffee. Flavors were almost explosive in the mouth. Terrific plush texture and a long, still somewhat tannic finish. I don't want to speculate about when it might peak, except to say that it ain't there yet.

Decanted for 2 hours. Nearly opaque with a thin clear rim, tapering through purple and into a black hole center. The nose starts off with dark plum, burning sage and bright savory herbs. The deep and powerful flavors include cooked down berries, fruit liqueur, and baker's chocolate all framed by ripe tannins, good acidity and full body. Long and powerful on the finish, I'd say this wine is on the plateau and should be enjoyed while still vibrant. I can see this drying out as it ages further. Drink now through 2015.

Big nose of dark, super-ripe fruit with coffee, earth and oak. Uber-rich and juicy with very intense flavors that explode on the palate. Almost thick in texture, but also velvety and mouth-coating. Nice balance with lots of structure to match all the fruit and a terrific, long, fruity, drying finish. This is a luscious, hedonistic, fruit-bomb -- and totally delicious.

1996-2009 Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon vertical tasting (Monterrey, Mexico): In the nose it has a deep core of very pure black fruits and a touch of cedar. This was the most concentrated wine in the flight. Still tannic, but the tannins are very ripe so as to not impart an overy drying sensation. This is an excellent wine that is not as flamboyant and hedonistic as the 1997. Best midpalatae and finish in the flight and a serious contender for WOTN.

2001 Cali Cab horizontal (Montelena Estate, Pride, Dunn Howell Mountain, Seavey) (Monterrey, Mexico): From 750ml bottle. Tasted non blind. In the nose it has a deep core of very pure black fruits and a touch of cedar. This was the most concentrated wine of the night. Still tannic, but the tannins are very ripe so as to not impart an overy drying sensation. This is an excellent wine that is riperthan all other wines tonight, and made in a more hedonistic style than the 2001 Montelena & 2001 Dunn Howell Mountain. Simply excellent. Impossible to pick a winner tonight.

Looks luscious, is luscious. Very deeply fruited nose, with coffee, chocolate, and cassis. Excellent, rich, deep fruit with plenty of milk chocolate overtones in spades. Wow! Threw a heavy sediment. A real beauty, and runs counter to my experience that these wines fade too fast. This is built for the long haul and should last another 8-10 years. 4-13-17-8: 92/100.

Third time the charm! After having my first 2 bottles of this corked('06,'10)....it is SO nice to finally have a perfect bottle of this great vintage for their cabs. This is a replacement bottle from Pride, after the corked one in 2010. The corked bottle in 2006 was replaced with a 2003. This has tons of sediment...dark oozing blackberry/cherry/plum fruit....wonderful mocha, dark graphite spice, liqueur fruit, smoked vanilla bean, and even a little olive and tobacco leaf. Very polished and creamy, yet still plenty of firm dusty spiced tannin in the mouth, and finish...where it explodes the dry exotic woods into dust! Just LOVE the Pride flavor profile...with the mocha and dark chocolate brownies, smoke and licorice. This is an amazing "non reserve" cab....all in perfect balance now, with plenty more days. MAN...when you you get a good one...WOW!

Vacation Wines: Pride, Matrot, Owen Roe, Two Hands, etc.; 8/7/2011-8/15/2011 (Family Beach Cottage, Scarborough, Maine): Decanted for about an hour and enjoyed over the next few. For Napa/Sonoma (and Pride) fans, this is one of Pride's best vintages going back to my earliest bottles of their mid-1990's regular Cab Sauvignons. This is holding up well and has become a little more elegant than earlier tastings. (No, not Bordeaux like, just aging well). Dark cherry, coffee aromas, smoke, oak, and softening tannins. Most friends love this Pride vintage.

A really beautiful bottle with unnatural power. I did find some secondaries, typical of 10 year old Napa cab- that sweet dark berry mixed with a little volatile chemical (not a nice descriptor, but I like it!). I bet this bottle can go 10 more years, my lone survivor probably won't!

Popped and poured. Deep purple color. Nose of ripe blackberry, smoke, some baking chocolate and high toned spicy notes. Full bodied. Concentrated black fruits, chocolate, cinnamon spice, a touch of menthol. Firm tannin structure. 30+ second finish which mirrors the palate.
This is the best regular Pride cabernet I’ve had in some time. Has enough complexity and structure to be pleasing. Ripe but not overripe. Should hold up well for a few more years but ready now.

One of my daughters wanted grilled steak. Having read other's recent notes on this wine I thought I'd give one a shot. Popped and poured. This still had the richness of the last bottle 1.5 years ago, but the tannins are starting to resolve, seeming more fine-grained and less promiment in this bottle. Red currants supported by hints of tobacco, chocolate/espresso. Lengthy finish. Not a hedonistic cab but so wonderfully, typically Napa mountain cab.

Wife thought nearly the perfect wine. Not bad for the day after Valentine's day. Had with fillet. Drinking very well after about an hour decant. Very full bodied, lots of fruit, still with some tannins but doubt it will improve with more age. Would not be a wine with those with a French palate. I can see why one would not drink anything other than CA cabs if you had the wares and foresight to buy the better wines.

Tonight at In Season. I double decanted this at 5PM and started drinking it around 8PM at the restaurant. It showed a fair amount of sediment on the decant causing me to toss a decent mouthful down the drain as I poured it back into the btl. The color is still dark crude. This has a fabulus nose of tobacco and expresso! Worth it just for the nose. The palate was pretty silky but still the tanins could resolve more. Rich chocolate covered berries and spice on the palate. Big mountain fruit but not heavy. Long! Delicious and a perfect pairing with tenderloin tonight.

Decanted for about an hour, giving off a lot of sediment, dark purple in color, a "heavy" nose smacking of chocolate and tobacco, a big, chewy wine that came across very disjointed on the palate with some heat, perhaps it needs more time to come together, but I am not a fan at this point . . .

Definitely still a baby. All those who say Napa Cab doesn't age well should taste this. Needs its good share of air to come around. Tannins play still a major role, but fruit isn't shy either. If you have some bottles, wait a few more years.

The nose was a little closed as was the palate at first, but the wine opened up after about an hour. I would decant next time. This wine's tannins seem to have taken the front seat over its fruit now. The structure and mouth feel are still fantastic. Definitely improves with air time.

decanted (notable sediment); starts out with potent black cherry, plum and some prune, tobacco, kirsch; dense and sl heavy with alcohol on the finish; better on day 2 with the alcohol blown off and some brightness in the still potent fruit. Light to medium acidity, medium tannins and body. Drink over the short term. 90-?

Chablis, Melville Clonal Blending and The Round 3 Let 'Er Rip (My House In The South OC): I don't think this had any decant, was a pop and pour. Currant, black cherry and the Pride forwardness. Yet, for me, smooth and still quite youthful with just a hint of tobacco in the background. Some discussion was made between a few of us about ageability, oak, etc. My comment was that I do think the wine will age and given the relative balance of the wine, I see no reason why it can't sit another few years to let some of the secondary notes emerge. However, don't mistake this for an old world styled bdx wine, it is not.

5 years ago I would have been going gaga for this wine, not long after I bought it back in 03-04. Now, after tasting thousands of wines, and just coming off a trip to Bordeaux, I am less excited about this style. If nothing it is quite delicious and fairly balanced, if not a huge wine all together. Plenty of "come hither" fruit and oak are exuded on this sexy wine. But it’s just kind of like that hot chick with little depth.
Color: Surprisingly dark, very dark for a 9 year Napa cab, but this is a Bob Foley wine, no messing around here! A purple red robe encircles the wine glass.
Nose: Oodles of Crème de cassis, scorched earth, mocha, spice, blackberry and blueberry, this is the dark aroma end of the spectrum
Palate: Similar, but with more currants than cassis, charcoal, licorice, blackberry and some blueberry, spicy. Full bodied, tannins are there but not aggressive; this is balanced well as the wine still has plenty the other parts in line with the largesse style.

Very pleased with this. Deep, gorgeous cassis. Easily handling the oak. I know that not all are pleased with this wine, but mine was showing very nicely.

Had this with Jim, Nichole, Scott and the family at a little family get together. Opened it up a bit cool from the cellar, but the fruit was there at the first taste. Stone fruit, perfect time to drink it. Don't wait ! ! Drinking great right now. Glad I have another 10 bottles . . .

Red to ruby on the rim which is highly extracted... deeply colored. Aromatically very intense with a ton of oak spice, pine, liquorice all of which exceeds the fruit intensity by a bit which is a bit generic with a mix of red and dark fruits. On the palate the wine has a lush and soft entry with low to moderate acidity, an abnormally round and full midpalate for cabernet, a nice transition into a still firmly tannic finish... the tannins are mostly oak in nature and quite firm, moderate to high ETOH. Wine has decent balance you could argue... huge amount of oak at present slightly exceeds the fruit intensity which is quite high, tannins balance the intensity/ETOH reasonably well, good length, great intensity, ok complexity. Wine has very little finesse, a lush texture, and is a little over oaked to show much sense of place. I agree with babnik below completely... I can see how this style of wine is popular, but it lacks some key elements of quality in my opinion. Good wine.

Full throttle, big, syrupy blueberry, milk chocolate, new oak. Cloyingly sweet. I found it overbearing and rather one-dimensional though I know this style is (or at least has been) very popular among some critics and collectors. I bought these wines early in my collecting "career" and now am disappointed more often than not. My opinion is that this style is unbalanced. Checking in on the wine on Day 2, it is all prune flavor.

Deep garnet color, nose of vanilla, cassis & sweet cherry cola leads to a full body of pure sweet fruit with some secondary tobacco and mint. Long seamless finish. Believe the hype!

bright sweet plum and currant nose; potent bright very sweet black currant, plum, tobacco, kirsch notes; good structure with enough acidity and tannic backbone to carry this off; more round over time but still potent and can easily be held; easliy handles thru the bbq ribeye; nice balance and one of my fave pride vintages. day 3 more heat at the finish so less enjoyable; should decant due to significant sediment.

Definately softened since last bottle in 06 and entering it's drinking window. Mocha and oak have settled considerably and the dark fruit takes center stage. Great stuff.

Nicely mature wine. Decanted about 1 hour before dinner and 1 hour more might have been a better idea. Very dark still and just softening on the edges. Rich ripe cab with alcohol mostly under control.Nose not giving a lot. 92 scores below about right.

Best Pride cabernet I've had in quite some time. Opened about 30 to 45 minutes before drinking. Primary impression on the nose was cherry pie. Tart cherry on the palate, with a somewhat surprising lack of vanilla, chocolate, or coffee. A little one-dimensional, but what a dimension! Mouth-filling fruit and an intense finish. Acids and tannins cut through the richness of grilled beef tenderloin. Great with food. Should continue to age gracefully for several years.

Drank over several hours....slow O'd for a few....very disappointing considering my expectations...muted nose that started to yield a bit. Hope this was a case of an off bottle. While not necessarilly a bad wine, just didn't deliver what I hoped for. Not consistent with other 01 Napa Cabs seem to be coming out of thier shell.

Not decanted. Dark almost purple color. The nose floats across the room. In the mouth this is huge, lots of burly pure Napa cab. It is acquiring some secondary characteristics but maintains its rich sweet fruit. Other than the first bottle I ever tried I think this one is the best, telling me that those other couple of bottles I own are probably worth keeping for another 5 years or more.

Deep garnet – darker than expected given its age. Full mocha and mixed berry nose. Has some uplifting structure to counterbalance the rather jammy, up the gut flavors. Surprise here is that it really doe not finish well – bitter and alcoholic. When I tasted this in its youth, I thought it had the balance to age. This bottle does not….does not remotely resemble the bottle from last year. (65)

14.5% ABV. Deeply colored, almost opaque with a clearing rim. This was initially closed, so I splash decanted it. Caramel and woody aromas initially. Rich but closed with some tar-like flavors. A bit firm and missing fruit. Not a great showing.

After about 1 hour - a massive nose of coffee and dark fruit. Concentrated, richly flavored and medium-to-full bodied, with a coating and slightly chalky texture. Intense flavors of black fruits, espresso bean, cherries, chocolate and oak. Just slightly acidic, with drying tannins and a medium, slightly bitter finish. Needs an hour to open up and reveal the layers of flavor and continued to improve for about 2 hours. As others have noted, this is a wine for steaks.

Black purple, full bodied, there is a nice texture in this lovey drinking wine. Balanced the sweet tannin give beautiful structure to the fall forest scents of smoke and oak. The cassis and licorice merge with sweet black fruit for a lingering delicious finish.

Very nice. Taste from Elysian day after. End of bottle, some sediment in the glass. Deep dark glass staining inky ruby color. Nose of rich boisenberries, chocolate, cassis, leather and classic Napa terroir. Palate is dense and very well textured. More dark robust and rustic cherries, chocolate, espresso bean and more leather. Silky tannins structuer with nice acidity. Still another decade under the belt on this bottling. Excellent weight on the palate. Very nice.

Opened to replace a corked bottle. One word for this wine - rich. Cherry, red currents, chocolate. The bottle was drained quickly with a 3" thick grilled porterhouse (shared, of course :). Not terribly complex but delicious with the steak.

Took out of the cellar, popped and drank with a Webered Porterhouse and a salad. Great wine that got even better as it warmed and aerated. Good fruit up front with secondary flavors of smoke and leather coming on with some cedar and sweet tannins still holding out. Finish about 45 seconds or longer.

14.5% ABV. Deeply colored, almost opaque dark garnet. Sweet smelling cedar-vanilla-caramel along with some black currant fruit. Rich attack with dark berry, caramel, and some mint. Fruit seemed to turn more toward tangy red currant at that point. Some lingering tangy mountain fruit tannin. Drinking nicely, but I am probably going to drink my remaining bottles over the next couple years.

The Blind Drunks monthly tasting (Bistro Thai, Geneva, Illinois): Notes of red fruit with a nice herbal undertone. There's some dark fruit tones on the palate, but it is also acidic and thin through the midpalate and finish. This was controversial after it was unveiled. Some thought it mistreated/flawed, others not. It was certainly nothing like the bottle I tasted last year, and I hope it is not representative.

Lusty nose of crushed berry, citrus zest. Flavors are carried in balance through medium body showing cassis, roasted plum, loamy earth and mint. Finish is good, though not particularly long flashing some sour cherry and trace oak. Decanted 2 hr with noticeable fade of both fruit and structure through the evening.

I had this with Filet Mignon against a very nice Syrah and this wine really faired the best with the meat. A great California Cab with a little age on it now. Probably my favorite vintage of Pride. Plum and cherry on the nose and palate, little wood, beautifully balanced, drinking perfectly right now. A little decanting time (1 hour) also helped it show its best.

The oak and tannins starting to dominate the flavors. Perhaps i should have done a better job of letting the bottle settle upright and decanting, but i got the distinct impression of licking an ashtray. the wine itself is doing just fine - albeit one dimensional. hoping that the next 3 years will see further improvement... quite a contrast from the reserve cab which is imho among the best of 2001 napa.

Drank 5 750's pretty much popped and poured all evening after the 2000 magnum, big improvement to the 00...Much more fruit and substance with stuffing, body and texture to spare...After much of this I started to beb for some complexity, that I did not find after mass consumption of this fruit monster, the wine is still primary but outstanding IMO

Served with Italian style lamb shanks with orange & olive. We gave this about 45 min decant and it smelled wonderful right off the get go -tons of red and black pit fruit and very smooth & velvety. More structure & nuance came forth with time and there was a nice chocolate /coffee hint to compliment the meat & earthy tones -there are plenty of soft tannins on the finish which became more and more pronounced towards the end of the bottle several hours later. Tasty.

decanted for one hour (a bit of sediment); still brooding dark smooth rich berry; ample tannins now take second fiddle to the fruit; some oak in the background; much more integrated than when last tasted two years ago; more complex and with plenty of life left; still getting better and one of the best cabs that i have recently tasted;

I had 2 bottles in 2005 that rocked, one bottle in 2007 that made me very nervous. But this is starting to develop into a very nice wine. Baby fat is gone, nose screams red fruit. medium bodied still with prominent tannin. I truly believe in a year or two this has potential to be really good.

Dinner with Linas. Pulled after the 1997 Pahlmeyer failed to deliver. The Pride did better, but not tremendously more. I’ve had this wine many times, but this was the least impressive showing, an off bottle? A dumb stage? My tasting was no where near consitent with other TN’s, rather closed and angular, it never realy opened up. Will need to try again.

Whence revisited it was much more introverted , still delicious , very delicious , but I wish I had followed it a little more closely . I am currently awaiting the finish of my 2 1/2 " porterhouse and will report back . But so far I am glad I put these away for awhile , but I think their time is close

I took a bottle of this to a friends house in Michigan a couple weeks ago. We paired this with dinner of grilled lamb chops which had been marinated in lemon, garlic and mustard using a recipe that my wife got out of the most recent Lewelling newsletter. My wife also made a red wine/beef stock and leftover marinade reduction au jus with the lamb. This wine was my favorite pairing with the lamb. Last time I had this was in 2003 and it was overpoweringly tannic. This wine has really opened since then. Decanted for 2 hours. Deep purple color. Mocha scents on the nose. Medium to full bodied. Notes of rich black fruit, cocoa and vanilla oak. Complex and well balanced with a full mouth feel. Long creamy finish. My wife and I had just visited Pride the week before opening this to try their 2005's and this was better than any of the fine 2005's that we had there. 96 points.

Wow. Fantastic stuff. I think this wine is just starting to enter a new phase of maturity where the intenseness (is that a word?) is starting to mellow out and integrate into a really fabulous drinking experience. There is still a touch of oak to be detected both on the nose and in the flavor profile but it is quite mellow and really mixed well with the fruits and the smooth extended finish. This is better then the 2002 by quite a large margain.

Dense, purple, opaque. Powerful nose of black and red currant, blueberry, tobacco, mineral, nail polish, eucalytpus, violets, vanilla and oak spices. Trademark Foley palate, lush, but still with strong acids and tannins...this still has plenty of life. Almost Pride Reserve like in structure. VGS.

Decanted 90 min. Gorgeous aromas of red and black fruits, mocha, pine tar and toasted oak. Intense fruit flavors with mouth-coating density. Tannins are integrated but provide a nice backbone. Finish is nicely balanced and length is good. Attention-grabbing fruit and balance, but little in the way secondary characteristics or complexity.

Dark purple. A sexy nose of blackcurrant liqueur, licorice, dark chocolate caramels and a touch of mint. Round and plush on the palate with blackcurrant, blackberry and a pronounced anise note. Ripe tannin on the finish. A pleasing but rather simple wine. Will it add secondary characteristics?

This is another big rich 2001, but what distinguishes it from the Cabernet Franc and the Reserve Claret is the lack of good acidity and minerality at its core. I didn’t pick up the drying tannins that Jeff Nowak did recently, but the high alcohol here does make for a more monolithic impression. Bottles I have had earlier showed better to me.

I finally cracked my first 2001 Pride Cab. I was expectant as I opened it the same night a less than stellar review was posted on eBob. The wine is black. The nose is attractive, although holding back some, having lost most of its vanilla scent and now displaying a pure black fruit aroma seasoned with coffee and chocolate. Not the most expressive nose I have smelled, but still very attractive and fruity. In the mouth this is still unforgiving and very structured. Full bodied and tannic but offering a long finish and a hint of its future greatness. This is mountain cab city, so those claiming it's over the hill are doing so when the wine is barely entering into its adolescence. This has a long life in front of it and given the concentration and very sound fundamentals (great flavor intensity, balance between fruit and tannin), this wine will become better with yet more bottle age. No reason to worry if you own it.

Deep, dark purple, brooding, tight upon opening. Dark roasted coffee bean notes stand out but excellent fruit hiding. A bit hot out of the gate. Nice and a long future ahead. I did not decant this at all -- it would've benefited with a couple of hours of air.

Nose was ground coffee, dark chocolate and some toffee. The palate was quite closed when first opened. Over the two hours the wine was open, the palate opened up and had nice fruit with a long finish. It helped that the wine was complementing a nice burger with maytag blue cheese and bacon, the fat really brought out the sweet fruit of the wine which seemed much harsher without food.

so much stuffing!! lots of slightly sweet dark fruit with hints of chocolate; however the tannins remain big, and are not yet fully integrated, even after decanting; this is really not yet ready to drink (think in terms of a few years), and will not be a wine to take to a resturant, unless you are thinking red meat...or for maybe drinking alone by yourself in the dark with some cheese.

It kills me to enjoy this; I've auctioned most of my new world wines for old. Drank staight from bottle to glass at cellar temperature. Black-purple and opaque. Use it to protect your eyes from a total solar eclipse. Its highly extracted, alcoholic and dense. However, I can't avoid enjoying its aromatics, purity and balance. Black currants, plum, licorice and coffee. Heavy oak doesn't overwhelm in the face of the impenetrable fruit. A truly regal wine. The monster tannins have mellowed. On the other hand, this is NOT a food wine. This is a wine to drink alone, or with strong aged cheeses and meats before or after a meal, not during. If you burn your Chateaubriand, serve this and no one will notice the charcoal in their teeth.
OK, that was last night. I hated rating this a 92; tonight, I regret elevating it a point. Its gotten smoother, more balanced, and more complex. Despite its mass, its still elegant. The dark fruit now seems accompanied by butterscotch and dark chocolate. Protracted finish seals the deal.

Double decanted for 3-4 hours. Rich deep color. Terrific nose covering the highs and the lows of cab- dark fruit, some exotic spice, eucalyptus, and a little of that cab nastyness that one finds in big concentrated cabs. It covers the palate with rich flavors and finishes quite well. Even with air this thing needs more time, perhaps 3-5 years. All in all this is a great wine.

WIML92+,PURPLE91,WA95,WS93 Tasted April 32, 2006 at WineDrinkerofTexas’ home. Opened and decanted roughly 2-3 hours before serving in a house Cabernet Sauvignon glass. Dark purple to crimson color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black berries, coffee, a touch of blueberry and a little caramel. Subdued nose from what I was expecting, still a little on the closed side. Flavors of black currants, black licorice, cherries and a touch of mocha. Firm tannins, good balance overall. I don’t think this wine is quite awake yet. I’d recommend holding for at least another 6 months to a year before popping another one. Value is recommended. Definitely some wiggle room here to further improve.

Mostly 2003 California Cabs (Moraga): Dark ruby red. Muted nose of pure cassis, with the signature Pride Cab notes of chocolate showing up with time in the glass (and coaxing). In the mouth, this wine is surprisingly tannic, with a very firm spine, much more pronounced than I remembered from an earlier tasting. Finally recognizable as a Pride Cab when tasted against the 2002 and 2003, still this wine has much more power and thrust on the mid-palate than either of these wines. The palate expression was a bit muted and closed initially, but with time in the glass, the ripe, intensely flavored core of fruit emerged and outshone the 2002 and 2003. I can't really imagine drinking this wine at this stage, however--it needs a good five years to come around, and probably will last considerably longer. 92-93

100% cab, decanted. wish i had stood it up for a while, as there was a lot of mud. however, it was a spur of the moment decision to drink this with kobe steaks. aeration helps this wine considerably. following it in the glass has been interesting, as it has definitely improved over time. first sips were a bit tart, but that completely disappeared, and quickly, with air. the wine is a bold expression of the grape, so, it's not for the feint of heart. nevertheless, it has enough balance to be recommended. licorice and classic cassis on the nose. there is still a significant amount of tannin to resolve, yet it's ok to open one now. i predict that in the 7-10 year window, this will be drinking even more beautifully. i've leveled a fair amount of criticism at pride for their dumb ass, antiquated ordering system, but they make a decent wine. i'm not convinced that anything but the reserve cab is worth the slobbering adoration it receives on this board, but, there is no mistaking this wine as a quality product. bordeaux lovers can eat shit and die rather than drink this.

($58) Lovely aromas of mint, anise, cedar, cocoa, and maybe some lavender then black currant. Intense and slightly chewey with tannin in a good way. Thick. Shows a little more toasty caramel oak on the palate, but remains true to the black currant fruit on the nose. Enjoyable. Would be good with red meat, as opposed to Chinese.

my second go 'round with this puppy. decanted 2 1/2 hours ago. the fruit is more pleasing to me this time. the tannins are still evident, and the wine is obviously going to age for a decade or more, but i'm finding it more accessible tonight than i did a few months ago. bottle variation? the finish remains a bit drying/ dusty, and i presume that when the tannins resolve, this will improve. nevertheless, i'm not knocked out by this wine the way many other notes have indicated. i reported on this wine last evening (92). i left about 200 ml in the decanter, and put it back in the cellar. the fruit has held, the tannins are sweeter, but there is an unpleasant gravelly/ pebble-like finish. i know how popular this wine is, and i like it, too. i'm just not ga ga over it. i actually thought i may have had some reverse prejudicial scoring on it last night. in fact, i'm going to lower my score to 91.

California Wines Offline (NYC): Dark Opaque inky purple. Broodingly thick looking in the glass. Compared to the 02' this wine looks much meatier. Nose is black forest chocolate, blackberries, and some vanilla with sweet tannins. I decanted this for 2 and a half hours and what a difference it made from the bottle I opened a few months earlier. Open for business with gobs of red ripe fruit lush palate taste. Long pure fruit finish that goes on and on. A winner.. Someone mentioned Pavie like.

Purple to the rim. Inviting nose of vanilla and cassis. Palate was rich, confectionary and had a creamy mouthfeel, with notes of chocolate, blackcurrants prevailing. Finish was quite oaky and armed with substantial yet ripe tannins. Still very primary, I look forward to trying another in a few years.

Dark red in poor lighting. Nose is blackberries and jammy cherries. It first started off a bit closed but with about 30 minutes of air started singing a song. Black tea, nice tannin bite with sweet black cherries and dark chocolate. Finish was short lived. I know this wine will deserve a higher score in time but first needs a few more years in the bottle.

Whitefish trip...Cal Cab how it should be done. Nicely fragrant with lilac, blackberry, and some vanilla. Light on its feet with gobs of red currants intermixed with black fruits. Tough to identify as there was tons of everything. Seemless finish if a bit short still. Tannins are sweet and soft. This may not be a 10yr wine but who cares if it shows this well already.

Slightly closed down since last tasting. Amazing nose that reminds you of an Aussie Shiraz or even an Elyse Zin. Palette blows you you away with an insanely long finish. Incredibly pure fruit, this is going to be an amazing wine. Can't wait to taste the reserve and claret.

Took to Bonaire with us to Cappricio and had with tenderloin. Amazing wine. Starting to close down from tasting a couple of months ago, but began opening up after two hours. Amazing purity of fruit with a finish that just doesn't quit. Wait until 2006 before trying again.

Tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. Bottle provided by Erik Miller. Bright disc. Opaque black robe with deep purple rim. Clean nose, showing very intense aromas of black fruit, mocha, vanilla, coffee and toasted oak. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, massive ripe tannins and dominant black fruit. The fruit is framed in liberal oak. Long, fruit-filled finish. This is Webster's definition of a "fruit bomb". The wine was well-received by the tasters, but misidentified as a California Syrah. My score reflects the addition of two points for the massive fruit, with subtraction of two points for the deficiency of varietal character.

Holy Toledo, this juice is simply remarkable! On the nose this has the standard Pride brown sugar thing going on, but in addition it is bursting with pie spice. On the palate this stuff shines with remarkable structure and fruit that balance so well. Wow, this is the definition of the word PURE, it just blows me away. The finish is extremely long with powerful, dusty tannins. Delicious!

($60) Dinner in Las Vegas at Bistro Baccus: Yum…14.5% alcohol. A very nice Cab with cedar and red currant fruit. Toasty sweet oak with a hint of anise. Structured tannin but definitely drinkable now. Tons of length and excellent balance.

Is this wine or blackberry jelly? Looks very dark and thick. On initial opening this wine reaks of oak. Smells like a saw mill. Amazingly after 2.5 hours open, the oak is nearly fully integrated. This is the first sign that this wine is a legend in the making. Intense nose of mint, brooding black fruit (I am not sure what brooding means, but this wine is brooding.) sweet oak. Thick, lush mouthfeel followed by charcoal, black raspberry, and vanilla. No tannins to speak of until the soft subtle kick at the end. Wonderful balance. This wine is going to be a legend. I want to save a glass for tomorrow to see how it develops. It is taking will power (not that I have any) to lay off the rest. Day 2. Still massive. The wine has slightly softened to reveal more lush fruit. Even better balanced than the night before.

Tried in Sept 2003. One of the biggest and most powerful 2001 Cal Cabs I've had. This wine threw up a wall of harsh tannins which prohibited all but the most basic fruit flavors to pass through. I did detect notes of plum and berry but not much else. The concentration, body and fruit core are all present and I am confident this will evolve into an excellent wine but it needs time. 93+.

Fruit took center stage over the oak, which has receded to a slight herbal character. Killer wine, wish that pride wines were still made in this vein. Great job Mr. Foley.

Surprise here is that it really doe not finish well – bitter and alcoholic. When I tasted this in its youth, I thought it had the balance to age. This bottle does not….does not remotely resemble the bottle from last year. (65)

Finish is good, though not particularly long flashing some sour cherry and

Plum and cherry on the nose and palate, little wood, beautifully balanced, drinking perfectly right now. A little decanting time (1 hour) also helped it show its best.

Tasty.

Tasted April 32, 2006 at WineDrinkerofTexas’ home.

Dark cherry and lots of chocolate and mocha notes. Very tannic at this time, needs to sit.

WOW, enjoyed this right after a 2001 Shafer Cabernet. This plays in a completely differnt league. Big and still elegant flavours of dark choclate and plums. Long finish. Robert Foley is doing everything right at the moment. Need to get more of this!

Deep purple. Wonderful aromas of blackberry, casis, mocha. A sumptuous palate exploding with dark fruit, mocha, cassis, vanilla in a long long finsh marked by sweet fine tannins. Tatsed blind against 15 other cabs including 1996 Opus One, 1996 Howell Mountain Vineyard, 1997 Stags Leap, 1998 David Arthur, 1997 Floral Springs Trilogy. Clearly WOTN!!

my second go 'round with this puppy. decanted 2 1/2 hours ago. the fruit is more pleasing to me this time. the tannins are still evident, and the wine is obviously going to age for a decade or more, but i'm finding it more accessible tonight than i did a few months ago. bottle variation? the finish remains a bit drying/ dusty, and i presume that when the tannins resolve, this will improve. nevertheless, i'm not knocked out by this wine the way many other notes have indicated.
i reported on this wine last evening (92). i left about 200 ml in the decanter, and put it back in the cellar. the fruit has held, the tannins are sweeter, but there is an unpleasant gravelly/ pebble-like finish. i know how popular this wine is, and i like it, too. i'm just not ga ga over it. i actually thought i may have had some reverse prejudicial scoring on it last night. in fact, i'm going to lower my score to 91.

Big and tight. Nice nose with some pencil and currant fruit. Huge on the palate with tight tannins and slightly sweet fruit. Finish with aromatics and earth. Good elements in place bode well for the future, but tough drinking now. Probably not going to resolve into something to my tastes though.

Delicious!
