PNP into Sydonios Le Subtil glass (“Root” day): Medium garnet to the eyes.
Black cherries and plums, some wild berries as well. Dried florals. What sets this apart was the sous bois notes that is towards “garrique” and “olives” that one may draw parallels to a top South Rhone Grenache.
Great integration. Mellow and complex with well resolved suave tannins.
Amazing quality here. 94 points easy.

Mature. Tertiary aromas of mushrooms, spices on the nose. Notes of cedar, pine. Wonderfully expanding on the palate, again tertiary flavors, forest floor notes, Pinot spices, soft and dusty fruit. Wide and deep, ready to go. Maison du Colombier in Beaune.

Tight early. Really opened up after 90 minutes to reveal lovely spices, black pepper, woodsy cedar nose, good weight on the palate with nice fruit and smooth finish. Glad I have another bottle of this one.

Served blind. Nose started somewhat offensively, and switched glasses it cleaned up a bit. Dark color, rich fruit, most tasters myself included were thinking '90 - '93 vintage. Reveal was a surprise to all, I'd be curious to drink this again.

Surprisingly backward and tight - quite earthy and smoky on the nose, dark fruit, minerality, spices. On the palate lots of structure, grippy tannins, lovely acidity, good fruit, good length. Drink or keep. 91-93

It had plenty of whole bunch spice and deep red and black fruits. There was a suggestion of coffee and plenty of earth. It was supremely youthful, nicely detailed and really fanned out on the finish.

Deep violet. Muscular aromas of black fruits, anise, game and earth. Later, this develops notes of smoke and menthol. The palate impression is rich but primary initially. An hour later, it starts to reveal some mature notes of mushroom and sous bois. Everything is framed by good acidity and mellow tannins. Powerful rather than refined--not clear if further development will change this. This stood up well to charcuterie and then Guinea fowl with wild mushrooms.

Perfect bottle. Still young colour. Compact, dark ruby.
This wine is open. Very dark and meaty both in bouquet and on the palate. Good mineral, nice acidity, well structured. Everything is in balance ... but it is not a complex wine. A bit one dimensional compared with the big guns from 1999. Pretty good length with a nice finish though.
I will say that the fruit and mineral reveals where this wine come from. It is a good 1er Cru from N S G.

Still tightly wound up and primary with lots of black fruit and fine grained tannins. Over time starts to reveal violets, slate, beef stock. Very impressive purity. No harm in cracking one now, but this wine will continue to improve for many years.

Nose isn't that pronounced, although it was decanted an hour before, but still some cherry and forest floor. Sweet dark fruits, maybe sour cherries in a good way, a tad too acidic and tannins need a bit more integration, but it doesn't detract much from a delicious bottle of wine. Wish I had more so I could try in another year or so but drank both bottles for Christmas lunch. 88 points

Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy, Nuits St Georges (Rodwell House): Light but bright crimson radiating to an orange rim. Aromas of cough syrup, vegetal, stem and herbs join raspberry, red currants and bing cherries. A powerful entry, quite sinewy that initially exhibits a hard, chalky tannin. It starts to open and appear more fleshy and accommodating as the fruit seems more baked, yet lingering underneath is an herb, an undergrowth element and a lively acidity. It's a pretty challenging wine. There is some complexity and intensity, but I feel it lacks composure and seems to stay around this juxtaposition of baked fruit and green leafy notes.

The week of Nuits rolls on. As much as the 2003 Mugneret-Gibourg was a matter of vintage over site Arlot wines are generally a matter of style over site. If you like Arlot wines this is a beauty but I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Quintessential Arlot nose of spiced raspberries, bramble, stem, herb, underbrush and black tea. Flavors are vibrant and balanced, focused around sweet red fruit, kirsch and earthy spices. Texture is supple in the mid-palate with dry (but not drying) tannins on the back. Acidity is lifted and might be a touch high though that could still resolve as this is clearly quite young at this stage. I think there will be more resolution to the flavors, texture and acidity in 10 years than there is now and it will be more of an agreeable wine at that point although I don't know that it will really be a wine that causes one to think of "Nuits" rather than thinking "Arlot" first. Still, if one likes the style of the domaine this is a very, very nice Forets that has a long life in front of it. I would go 90+ right now with room for a point or two worth of improvement as a possibility.

Umm....it needs more time to breath, after 3.30 hours it's right on track. A nice wine, nice producer but not my style...still not my type of Burgundy. I have to try more or maybe it's too young at this moment ?? IMO, the style is like d'Angerville...too difficult for me ??
Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy 1999 Vintage (Rodwell House): Medium crimson with a slight orange rim. A deep, richly satisfying entry with fresh meat, red fruits and chocolate. Some perfume, despite its NSG origins, lifts the nose nicely. Delicate entry, the wine is still masculine with an initial powdery texture that extends to firm but yielding tannins. Plummy notes, some higher tone fruit and a touch stringy on the finish this is nevertheless a delicious wine.

International Pinot Noir Celebration; 7/28/2005-8/1/2005 (Willamette Valley OR): Tough to assess. Excellent start with floral bouquet with plenty of cherry fruit. Palate was mostly black cherry, some red cherry, but fruit was clearly behind firm tannins and acidity for now, giving an austere, even harsh, character. Don't touch until 2010 at the earliest.

Has certainly closed down, with the nose offering some well seasoned oak and a hint of spice. The palate is silky with a bit of fat but the intense red berries I remember when the wine was fist released have gone away for a little slumber
