Stored in a warmer than textbook cellar since release and developing at a glacial pace. Garnet with minimal lightening in thin layers. From the start a quite intense also complex nose and palate with black and red fruits and earthy notes like forest floor. I have to admit, that this is developing in a totally different way as I expected drinking the previous bottle. This withstands the time and slowly opens up to something interesting. But who wants to wait nearly 20 years after the vintage for a wine not much more than just excellent? I advice to let this stand upright for at least a week, because the sediment is very very fine. 5/13/17/10. -2040+

Clos des Epeneaux survey, part II (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly, a decent 2005 (which honestly is few and far between, and I'll throw in my editorial comment that it is one seriously charmless vintage very much like 1986 Bordeaux). This is actually quite close in profile to the 2009, but the fruit is darker and feels more subdued. Almost a leathery tannic note here, with plenty of grainy tannin that still needs to be resolved. Probably the wine with the longest-lived potential tonight, and that's because there's enough fruit here.
Very dark. A touch of cork taint but not terrible. There is so much dark fruit here, a silky complexion and then the grip! So young...this is quite a performance, despite the TCA.

Natebm-Very dark hue, dark fruited scents with a touch of discreet wood. There is definitely excellent concentration and raw power in this wine, but its fiery backbone does not make a good candidate for pleasure now. Quite over extracted, so patience advised, and I am not sure if it will ever be a friendly companion.

Dark garnet. A real wild, savoury nose, complex, rustic, meaty stew, mirepoix, Sri Lankan spice, dried rose petals. The palate fresh, youthfully exuberant, bracing acidity, framing vibrant red fruits, powdery limestone mineralite, feminine and beguiling yet simultaneously robust and savoury, mature sous bois, pungent animale in the best possible way. Initially moderately prominent tannin recedes seemlessly with air. This is a gorgeously seductive, complex Burgundy just in the early stages of maturity and a real hedonistic delight!

Based on recent negative reviews I had to open my first bottle. The initial sniff suggested the wine was not flawed. Tasting said the same. Indeed it is a wonderful wine. Still only in the earliest stage of maturity. Very tight nose and taste at first. Some opening came while in the glass. Much still to develop. Very similar experience with "lesser" 2005's very slow getting to the beginning of maturity.

In a weird place right now. Some tertiary notes (and maybe a tiny bit volatile) but still very tight. Opened out over 3 hours, and quite broad and long on the palate with lots of savoury notes. Still has lots of tannins, and some overripe notes of a warm vintage. I'm not sure where this is going, but I won't be searching for any more. Bought in 2011 and well stored for the past 10 years.

Incredibly disappointed, this is well past it’s prime, with stewed-tomato and port-like overtones. A hollow, fruitless shell of a wine. Properly stored in a passive cellar.
Opened the first bottle of a half case of this and was frankly disappointed. Beautiful color; fairly restrained, but nice enough nose; and a muddle, overripe taste. Reminded me of some of the lr]esser wines of 2003 and 1990. Raisiny, almost port like flavors, without the purity of port. Had I not known how it had been stored the las 13 years or so, I might has suspected a very mild storage or heat issue. It wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t us to 1er Cru burg standards.

Andrew Edmunds (Andrew Edmunds, London): Frankly struggles at this stage and felt like the winemaker lost out to the 2005 heat and maybe got a bit out of hand. HAs a slight over ripe feel, to the point of having 1-2 port notes. Purchased on release and stored in my passive cellar. Which might appear to make a difference, based upon other notes, as perhaps the fact that it has not been in a high end refrigerator for the last 13 years is why it is open right now out of my old school cellar. Great dark fruit, lovely balance, tertiary notes developing. Still dark red with a large amount of time left. Really long and clean on the savory finish. Double decanted. Not anywhere near peak, this wine will be spectacular at peak I believe, score adjusted up for future potential.

Mørke bær - blåbær og kirsebær, litt parfyme som nesten går mot maling. Med litt luft overtar skogbunn og andre modningsaromer og frukten forsvinner i bakgrunnen. Fløyelsemyk i munnen.

Alcohol level illegible. Good long cork with no wine penetration. Very dark colour, especially for Pinot; somewhat cloudy. The nose is rich but also very lively with red berries and some raspberry in evidence. The mouth is in the same vein, with an unusual combination of richness and liveliness; the oak is perceptible at times, but it is never overwhelming. Unrecognisable from my last tasting (December 2016), and so much better now. There is still more to come in my view. This is still in a muscular style that is not my favourite, but there is no doubt that the execution is very successful.

Finally cracked open this bottle that was tapped by Coravin 4-5 times over the last 4 years and overall this has been getting better and better with time. On the nose, red fruit with strawberry components. Pretty advanced nose with a touch of brett.. In the mouth spicy red fruit, iron, and great acidity. Still youthful but this opened up beautifully after about 2 hours decant. Great now but there's probably a lot more around the corner if you wait it out. 92-93p

Long lunch with Martinborough winemakers (Martinborough, NZ): Served blind by Paul. Another deep, powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries and other dark fruit, earth and dark spices. Some barrel oak yet to fully blend in. In the mouth, large scaled, dense and structured. Ripe black fruit, soil, dark chocolate and slatey minerals. “Bone dry but with evident fruit sweetness” observed Larry, it is rich and almost unctuous. “2005 at its best” said Mike. A quality but relatively backward wine I would expect to be very long lived. Enjoyable on the day though.

2005 COMTE ARMAND CLOS des EPENEAUX POMMARD MONOPOLE 1er Cru- lots of flavours in this bottle with depth and complexity unfolding with each taste; I got chocolate and spiced black currant, black cherry and black raspberry; it was full bodied, had soft tannins and a long, satisfying finish.
Appearance: Bright and clear, it has medium/deep ruby color, with fading rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, red fruit of strawberry, animal notes of musk, pungent spice of licorice, maturity notes of savory. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin which is grippy in texture, showing medium (+) alcohol, medium body and medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit of dark cherry and blackberry, red fruit of raspberry, animal notes of musk, floral notes of violet. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Pommard with an intense nose showing good complexity, the wine is very dark in color for a Bourgogne, with good acidity and tannin, plenty of structure which would reminiscent a grand cru. On the palate the good concentration and length is another good indication to the ageing potential of the wine. It is ready to drink now and can maintain for another 5-7 years.

During a La Paulée lunch, so only brief impressions. From Magnum. Holy cow, almost St.Estephe level of tannins, fruit and rusticity here. Black, fruit, gingerbread, cherry, earth. Make sure you have red meat with this. The anti thesis of an elegant Chambolle Musigny but not a bad wine at all, just need to be prepared when opening this and you had your light red fruit Burg in mind...

Very impressive wine. Dark and brooding with grand cru depth and weight. Excellent balance. This is a darker-toned wine that has eons to go before it's ready, but the tannins are fine enough and the fruit concentrated and deep enough that it's no crime to open one now. I predict this will be quite special in a decade or two.

A deep colour; quite full and rich, with dark cherry and plum fruit, even a touch of blackcurrant, and some savoury notes, but also some rather thick tannin which will need time to be absorbed. Whether this is ultimately a great wine, or merely very good, will depend on whether the tannin resolves itself or not. Try again in 3 years or so.

Ruby to the rim. Cherry, black fruits, flowers, but then a palate that Neal Martin from the Wine Advocate called "more impressive than pleasurable". The tannin levels are high and thank God there is enough fruit to keep a bit of balance. On the palate the wine shows good dimension right now, but it will never get better than this. Drink it up before the fruit fades away. Martin gives it a drinking window till 2025 and 90 points. Let's hope that Benjamin Leroux is through with experiments and knows "how far we could go" with extractions. Here they went to far again.

Very inviting and welcoming in a way. Quite dark in color and to be honest feels like it has a few more years to show full potential. Dark fruited, good ripe fruit, velvety in a way and still very much on the fruit side. The oak has been assimilated but still needs a bit more complexity to move it from a good to a fascinating wine. A solid 92 for now but when this develops more will be a solid 95

This is an opulent and super-smooth wine, probably too much so for my taste. The oak is certainly perceptible (again on the excessive side). It may very well be that the oak will become better integrated in years to come, letting the finer flavours emerge. At the moment, the wine is luxurious but somewhat anonymous. A relative disappointment in view of the terroir (and the current price!).

Deep ruby, expressive somewhat oaky nose, full of black and blue fruit. Actually almost has the nose of a jammy Californian Pinot (which gave me a bit of a fright, to be honest).
Medium body of super ripe red and black fruit. Strawberry, black cherry, blackberry, anise. Medium+ tannins that are now well integrated. Where the oak was strong on the nose it is perfectly integrated on the palate. The wine is sweet and concentrated without being jammy.
Only thing missing is a bit more minerality/salinity. I imagine that the fruit will carry this wine for another decade, but I'm not certain it will improve from here, so why wait?

Pours out an inky colour reminiscent of a bruise. The wine is so dense and concentrated yet everything is in balance and proportion is perfect. There are notes of dried plum, liqueur cherry, licorice, tar and smoked meats. It is has so much presence in the mouth with awesome power. Structure is monumental and it is probably a 50+ year wine if the cork can hold out. A monster but not a really scary one. Although it kind of tries to intimidate you now with its awesome strength.

An earthy wine with plenty of tannins. Seemed to stay in stagnant state and not blossom more. But the nose and the palate tell you something is hiding. The dark red color seems to indicate it also.

wine is showing way more forward than I thought. Still youthful and has to shed some tannin and oak but there's complexity in the texture of the wine and plenty of dark earthy fruit. The nose is already quite open and just fills the bowl of the glass with that dark savory pommard fruit.

Showing to be still so youthful. Grippy, yet tannins have softened. Earthy character, dark fruit, quite well knit but not showing supple ripe Pinot Fruit. Had wanted this to be better.

very dark and turbid. An earthy aroma not usually met in a burgundy bottle that is not a plus. Next time I will decant for a day...... Actually, this is not like a Burgundy wine at all.
Burgundy tasting chez La Grappe. A very deep colour. Concentrated black cherry and blackberry fruit on the nose. Similar on the palate, which is rich and concentrated. Still very youthful, with noticeable tannin. Very long. Will be excellent in a few years' time.

Closed down pretty hard. But a very impresse wine where everything is turned up to eleven. Massive concentration, primary intense fresh fruit and a laser beam of acid throught it all. Wait at least 10 years (perhaps 20).

Burgundy dinner @ Serenade in Chatham: This was my contribution to the reds...Very young wine, still dominated by primary flavors. Nose was black fruits, cinnamon, earth. Palate was dark fruits, plums, smoke. High acidity and young tannins. Long finish.
This is a big wine, still young and primary - didn't compare as well to some of the older reds in the evening, lacking some nuance at this stage. Needs time - will be very good in another 5+ years

Last minute impromptu gathering but some great wines – Roumier, Mugnier, Lafite, CB and etc. (Paul's house then to Adam's): Impressive big scale wine. Broad and expressive nose of red and black fruits, cherry, blackberry, root beer, cinnamon, iron and strong earth note. Exceptional concentration, sweet and earthy fruit palate impression and nicely integrated tannins. This is a big scale wine displaying a bit of rustic earthy tone. Very primary but the ample opulent fruit makes the wine very enjoyable already. True to the style of the producer and the commune.

Lots of complexity going on here. The fruit shows fairly ripe, especially on the second day but not overly so. There are also some signs oak showing stronger on the next night. Long palate with strong tannin and acidity. The strong yet lean concentration of fruit is promising for future development though it drinks pretty nice now with air. Terrific.

Dark ruby-purple colour with an opaque core, looks thick with high extract content. Intense aroma, mostly vegetal (cabbage) and leather, with less fruit. With aeriation the wine opens up, cabbage and leather mostly disappear and then some fine vanilla, smoke and cherry come. In flavour it gives the feeling of first biting a flower of a rose, then nice and fresh acid and quite well integrated, but still young tannins are playing in the mouth. The finish is very-very-very long with cherry, vanilla and black currant. Very exiting and complex with high degree of elegance. This will further evolve by aging. Around $100.

Christmas day dinner wine. Very very good, not great. Will benefit from a few more years in the cellar, but not many. Pure, vibrant pinot noir. Typical high end Pommard. Lacks a little length to be on the next level.

Closed down pretty hard. But a very impresse wine where everything is turned up to eleven. Massive concentration, primary intense fresh fruit and a laser beam of acid throught it all. Wait at least 10 years (perhaps 20).

Too young. Tight and rustic and three hours in the decanter still did not show anything positive. I think this has promise, but I would wait for another few years.

Very young and still primary but very impressive. Great flowery nose, very rich palate with plum and herbs and leather. Very long and clean on the finish. Excellent, could easily get to outstanding.
