  • An incredibly complex and fascinating aroma profile. Dark ripe raspberries, blackberries, leather, bacon, iron, white pepper, toasted wood and vanilla notes. The oak is still evident, but no longer overpowering. Very concentrated, great mouthfeel, delicate and fine-grained tannins, and endless finish. A fairly structured Mouline. An absolutely stunning wine at the start of its drinking window, a drinking window that will last for decades to come.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 96/100

Colour: Velvety ruby red. Aroma / bouquet: Impressive ripe and rich bouquet. Remnants of fresh dark fruit, especially dried dark fruit, menthol, truffle/mushrooms and a subtle hint of pleasant 'groundiness'. After some aeration, this wine develops a beautiful tertiary bouquet with the beginnings of Madeira and soy. Taste / Aftertaste: Refined, soft acidity. Nicely matured tannins, buttery soft but also at this stage vital and powerful. With a 'modest' alcohol content of 13.5%, this wine is perfectly balanced. Everything is right. Mouth-filling, powerful but refined. Long finish. General / potential: Lovers of 'ripe' French Syrah: DRINK NOW. This wine doesn't get any better…. With which I have to return to my tasting note of 08-03-2013 in which I do not suspect this wine of great potential for development. In the past 9 years this wine has developed to the current, seriously grand, level. 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / Bouquet: 14 + Taste / Aftertaste: 18 + General / Potential: 9 = 96/100

  • Les Trois garcons chez Lukas: The nose on this is to die for! Just a wonder of dark fruit, charcuteries, peppery spice, violets, lavender and a touch of olives. Also, strangely, banana! I could sniff this all night and die a happy man. On the palate sadly not living up to the lewd promise of the bouquet. A bit subdued, not giving much more than a sense of dark power. Everything in perfect balance though, with a silky mouthfeel, good acids and very fine, powder tannins. Good lenght but would have wished for more.

Give this another decade and I believe we’ll have magic!

  • Simply extraordinary. As close to perfection as one could dream: stereotypical “slight cloudiness” of Guigal’s Cote Roties. Incredibly smooth and silky tanins, extremely long, with this amazing explosion of flavours in the back of the palate. “Only” 15 years old, yet at its peak (or not?) ; we had the distinct conviction that it would be equally as amazing in 10, 15, or 20 years time. Opened and carafed 2 hours before enjoying, on a roasted pheasant and then cheeses. Opened our only bottle of 2005 tonight in the spirit of “carpe diem”, or “you only live once”, and frankly, also to celebrate the defeat of this American (dangerous) buffoon... if you see who I mean... Hard to think of a better celebration!

  • A fun gathering at L'Auberge Chez Francois (L'Auberge Chez Francois, Great Falls, VA): Expressive nose displaying concentrated black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry jam, black cherry, licorice, tapenade, lavender, black pepper, a hint of cedar and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of youthful black fruit, rich yet silky, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long intense black fruit driven finish. Drinking beautifully in a youthful way. Needs another decade to reach the peak.

  • again quite a tannic monster even with time and air. still has some attractive hints of freshness and the intensity and depth is remarkable.

  • 2005 Cote Rotie La La & Co. - 15 years of age: Tasted blind. Of the three 2005 Lala's this was the most difficult to approach. It was a bight lighter and airy with dark and red fruit as well as licorice. But there is still so much astringency here and the tart acidity does not help either. Will it be a great Mouline. I am not sure but one thing I am sure is that you should allow this wine till 2025 to mature and soften. With lots of tannins left to shed and its freshness I see little risk of this going over the hill any time soon. 93+

  • The intensity to the 2005 La Mouline's nose is incredible: Darker raspberry, waves of florals, and smoke. Dense dark fruited flavors to an absolutely sensually textured palate. Youthful, of course, but wow this is good.

  • At this stage these ‘05 La La’s need at least 4+ hours to open up. Despite its youth the La Mouline is perfectly enjoyable. Another 5+ years should put this apex predator at the top of the wine chain.

Upon opening it is a dark, dense and brooding Côte-Rôtie. After a few hours the diverse and expressive nose reveals an exotic incense of Asian spices, violets, espresso roast, garrigue and pipe tobacco.

Smoked beef brisket, wild licorice, and tilled earth encircle the perfectly ripe dark fruit core. Mid-palate density delivers notable depth and flavor expansion with sensual textures, finely polished tannins and a lengthy finish.

Nothing but stellar old vine juice here!

  • 2005 E.GUIGAL LA MOULINE COTE ROTIE- unlike the 04` La Turque, this was big and bold with fully expressive and not yet balance in fruit, acids and flavours; it was a pubescent highly energetic wine; it had depth and complexity of red and black fruit even though its colour was a deep, dark ruby; I`m not sure decanting would have helped, but leaving the cork in tack and waiting for a few years is recommended.

  • Score here is potential. This wine is really big at this stage and drinks very young. Dark and brooding. Good spice and tons of fruit. Very telling to have this after the 96 Mouline. These wines esp in big years need 20 years+ to gain the secondary and tertiary flavors that are so amazing in these LA LAs. Wait 10-15 years. This will be amazing in time. Right now its just so young and lacking the complexity and nuance of the older wines.

  • ChrisD's 40th: Herbs, violets, smokey spices and redcurrant. Dense fruit shows on the palate, but it maintains vibrancy and lift. Flows wonderfully and crackles with potential. Improved dramatically with each moment it spent in the glass. Should be monumental in time.

  • Plums, banana, beef broth, painfully young!

  • Still primary. Concentrated with ample sweet and ripe black fruit and loads of sweet vanilla oak which needs time to integrate. On the palate it is smooth and creamy with very deep flavors of black blerry fruit and sweet spices. A real pleasure to drink even now but I think it shows just a hint of its true potential.

  • Celebrating Yiannis Karakassis' Master of Wine Entitlement (Food Mafia Restaurant, Glyfada, Greece): Very dark ruby. Powerful and sweet nose with excessive oak at this stage but the blackberry fruit is so powerful that will take over after ceveral years of cellaring. Full-bodied, rich and generous but still a baby. Long aftertaste. Cellar for at least another 5 years.

  • TN: Rhone dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Expressive perfectly ripe sweet black fruit driven nose, cassis, white flowers, liquid smoke, a hint of tapenade and garrigue. Exceptional concentration, intense black fruit driven palate impression, silky, cool and polished mouthfeel, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and seamless long finish. Obviously very youthful but perfectly enjoyable. Need another ten years of cellaring to reach the peak.

  • Last of 8 2005 Northern Rhones tasted blind. Gorgeous polished nose of vanilla, blueberry preserves, and white pepper. Very silky textured with a plush mid-palate and deep dark flavors of cassis, blackberry and dried flowers. Long finish and still very youthful. This is ought to be almost immortal and drink well for decades. Group's #2 and my #2 of 8 but it was a virtual dead heat between this and the Chave Hermitage that came in first. The nose on this, the La Landonne and the Chave led me to guess they were the 3 "LaLas" but turned out La Turgue had been saved for later..

  • 2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): Souced from vines in the heart of the Côte Blonde with an average vine age of 90 years, this deep ruby/red wine (89% Syrah, 11% Viognier) impresses from the get-go. Intensely aromatic, it offers dark plum, Asian spices, fig, pipe tobacco and briar notes which carry through to the palate. Medium-bodied and with a nice acid backbone, it wraps the flavors with medium-weight, silky tannins. The wine's oak and alcohol are tightly integrated and the middle palate is solid. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its finish, which seams to last forever. Absolutely stunning! Drink now-2030.

  • Thrilling to taste with its sensous textures, perfectly ripe fruit, concentration, length and purity. Big, rich, young and close to primary, this beauty will get better and better with age.

  • This is so good, it's close to being off the charts. With insane levels of concentrated, perfectly ripe, dark, red fruits, flowers, thyme, vanilla bean, licorce and smoke, you are hooked. The wine fills your mouth and coats your palate with the perfect blend of density and lift. How Guigal is able to do this, time and time again is beyond me. I know this is expensive, but it's one of the few pricey treats that is worth the bank.

  • Kleur: Volrood Aroma / bouquet: Gesloten, wat donker fruit, kersen, geparfumeerd (vooral bloemig), chicque. Smaak / Afdronk: Matige zuurgraad, ronde tannines, vol, zeer drinkbaar. • This will be one tasting note for La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque 2005. The Mouline was blood red with a slightly carmine rim. The Turque dark blood red and the Landonne was extremely dark with still a purple hue. The Mouline had a beautiful perfume with loads of herbs and spices and some graphite. The Turque also a lot of garrigue, esp. clove as well as ripe fruits and some (pleasant) medicine impressions. The Landonne had beside the garrigue and fruits, saddle leather, laurel and an enormous intensity. The Mouline on the palate concentrated with very juicy fruits, leather, bacon, garrigue, some sweetness, vanilla, good acidity, sticky tannin and a great length. The Turque had the same impressions and also ink and black olives. Also a great length. More firm than La Mouline but so beautiful as well with the same impressions on the palate! The Landonne really is a mouth full of wine with the most tannin and good bitterness. Maybe the least sweet, at this moment. The tannin is still the most locked and a little drying in the finish. Overall; three beautiful and superb wines with each their own merits. I will score all three the same: 96, but with one or more plusses for future expectations. The Mouline is the most elegant and juicy at the moment; 96+. The Turque holds the middle between elegance and future, but imho it has the best balance at least at this moment; 96++. La Landonne is the most reticent at the moment with the longest future; 96+++. For all three wines; wait until 2020 or even better 2025.

  • 2005 Guigals with Lawrence, Vivian and Mrs L (Fook Lam Moon, Hong Kong): Sexy and svelte while also retaining an aura of elegance and poise, the 2005 La Mouline was surprisingly approachable despite its relative youth. Nose was dominated by smoky, velvety notes of dark berries, dried flowers and saddle leather. Medium bodied, with a fine polish and smooth mouthfeel and a plush 60-second finish, this wine was a real knockout in a rather feminine sort of way (certainly compared to the La Turque opened alongside). My first experience with Guigal's famous single-vineyard Cote Roties, and I can see why these wines are often priced for perfection.

  • Guigal masterclass with Christopher Canan (Regional wines and spirits, Wellington): This is an amazing wine. Very expressive nose with plums and very slight spirity aroma. Smooth and round mouthfeel. Very long finish, I could still taste it 90 minutes later despite tasting 11 other wines at the same time. Despite spending 42 months on oak, it carries it very lightly. This stood out head and shoulders as the wine of the night, despite the high calibre of some of the other wines.

  • Wonderfull nose with blackberry and raspberry. Sweet, clean and juice almost like eating stewed fruit ( maybe strawberry). Also a nuance of mint and salt. Very rich and elegant with perfect balance like a great burgundian. Fine finish. A great Mouline in the making, although it is easy to drink now.
