  • 2/12, good cork. Pale/medium garnet core, wide pale rim. Nose shows dark fruit, iron, smoke, mineral, touch of liquorice and damson as it warms slightly. Medium bodied on the palate, dark liquoricey fruit, smoke and mineral with a touch of iron again, it is firm but fine with a pleasing sense of austerity, fresh/vibrant acids and a good length, lightly grippy finish. Excellent.

  • Lots of sediment thrown but still sporting a relatively dense and vibrant ruby color. The aromas start out earthy and nicely developed and even tease you into thinking this might actually be mature, but it becomes more rather than less restrained over the course of the bottle. The fruit is mellow but still has that lovely 2005 sweetness. The mouthfeel is relatively supple and easygoing but as those aromas become stonier and more reserved the tannic hiss also picks up a little bit. So this still needs a few years to get fully into the zone but it's in a spot that's enjoyable and not just promising.

  • An Afternoon of French and French-Inspired California Wines (Healdsburg, California): Ruby. Ripe cherry and soil. Medium weight, round and quite sappy. Open dark red fruit and earth, solid acidity, and some lingering but ripe tannin. Very enjoyable now but 10+ years of potential improvement.

  • Clear yet quite deep colour. Expensive wood and some wet earth on the nose. With higher temperature, closer to room temperature, there's also an element with raspberries. In the mouth it's first and foremost hard. Little grace here. It is firm and balanced, that is possibly the nicest way to say it. Decent length. Will it improve with age? It's just as likely, I think, that it does not have the fruit to take it much further.

  • The nose is a 9/10, intoxicating mix of damsel, ripe red fruit, dried rose petals and a touch of sous-bois. In the mouth however, this was disappointing: somewhat thin, only little fruit and slightly drying tannins. Still drinkable, but not ablot of enjoyment. My best hope is, that this was just a bad bottle.

  • Showing very Ile.... earthy and meaty, pan drippings, dark red fruit, a little cooked fruits and syrups, pine forest, beets... smooth tannins, Briailles really nailed the level of extraction in 2005, they didn't overdo it, this is svelte and lively despite its intense meaty side. Long on earth, flowers and meat, integrated dark red fruit notes are secondary to the non-fruit complex. This is probably fully mature, but will continue to drink well for many more years, and may even improve.

  • Stewed cherries, Brandied cherries, earth, moss, Chinese herbal medicine, blood orange, prunes, fig

Palate: medium body, Spicy, med acidity, med+ length. Everything in balance. Perfect to drink now!

  • Light red with brownish rim. Somewhat closed nose with hints of raspberries and almonds. Pleasant and soft with ripe fruit. Ripe with soft tannins. Softer and more fruit after an hour decant. Good lenght. Save max three years.

  • Pale red color, with clear bricking at the rim. Nose is developed but still dominated by fruit, elegant and complex aromatics which immediately remind one of Pinot Noir's class. Medium bodied, lithe and nimble with good depth, beautiful lacework- really easy to drink. Brilliant finish. Perfect now but can probably be enjoyed over the next couple of years

  • Rich, balanced, crisp, terroir, elegant .
Drinking well, light bricking, room for maturation . A good one !

  • Best bottle of this yet. Nose of sandalwood and cherry. Initially the palate was a bit overly acidic but with air it settled into a beautiful, balanced classic red burg. I very much look forward to enjoying my final bottle over the next few years. I suspect it will hold up for a while (as most well-made, and properly stored, ‘05s would), but it feels at or close to peak so I see no reason to wait. Paired well with kurobuta pork roast.

  • 1/12, excellent cork.
Pale garnet core, very pale wide garnet rim. Nose is quite developed, nicely aromatic, liquorice, soil, mineral, underlying mainly black fruits, touch of iron. Medium bodied, supremely elegant and graceful, but with excellent depth too - cool dark fruit, mineral, liquorice, finely drawn with fresh/vibrant acidity and then a long lightly grippy finish with soil and cool dark fruit. Just lovely (and absolutely perfect with Coq au Vin), drinking well for me but no hurry.

  • Similar to prior note. Lost a point this time around, although there’s a chance that speaks more to the poor pairing (Italian chicken and pasta dish) than to the wine.

  • Monthly Wine Group: Double Blind Pinots From Anywhere (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Light medium ruby color. PNP, drank a tasting pour double blind over an hour plus. Wine #2. Nicely balanced, tart cherry, iron and mineral, slightly rustic, light-medium bodied, the tannins still have a little hold to them. Very pleasant, I was thinking Village Burg, 10-15 years.

  • From our double-blind wine dinner at Ciao Bella in Bloomington MN. My btl & one of my two personal favs tonight. Even though my '05 Pernand-Verge & Kevin's '08 Henri Gouges NSG 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges were stylistically quite different. My Chandon de Briailles was a feather weight w/a subtle range of tart cherry, loads of mineral, earth, spice & forest floor. Restrained & perhaps a little standoffish for some palates in our group. I loved it! This is a typical '05 where you ask yourself, "will it ever be ready"? Kevin's Gouges, which I also loved, was fully assessable & "come hither". Richly fruited & yet while fuller bodied, showed plenty of energy. Tonight's Gouges Clos Poret was also quite different from Chevillon NSGs that I've had many more of & seem more classic than the Gouges here. That said, the Gouges was my WOTN & so easy to love regardless if you're a Burg purist or lean more domestic. More about the Gouges in a TN to follow. I loved both wines & just wanted to comment on both since both appealed to me immensely, for different reasons.

  • This wine continues to impress. Light colored yet earthy and true. Glorious fruit purity held together by a mineral spine. Vibrant. A bit tighter than the previous bottle but seems like it is on a terrific evelatory path - just needs some time. Love the nose. Try again in 2027. (93+)

  • Consistent with prior notes.

  • Dark crimson. Black cherry cough drop bouquet. Brisk attack, unfolds into engaging mid-palate of dark cherry. Acidity provides freshness still though this is well into tertiary development. Tannins are fine but very much in eveidence still. Medium bodied and quite long.

Very nice development here - this still feels wound tight.

  • Fragrant nose of flowers, mint and perhaps a hint of licorice. A bit restrained on the palate, with red fruit and earth dominating. Was decanted for around an hour before the first taste, and it did open up a bit over the next hour. But never fully bloomed to offer more intense flavors I was hoping for. Elegant and quite enjoyable nonetheless. This is a 92-93 in my book, with 94 potential of it opens up a bit more (have it a 93 to reflect my wife’s higher score).

Paired well with rosemary garlic rubbed boneless leg of New Zealand lamb.

  • Consistent notes with previous review in December, 2020. But have to agree with previous reviewer - I may have been under-rating this wine. It IS definitely in the same class as some of the ‘05 GC’s I’ve tasted. Sublime bouquet, dominated by red fruit and earthy notes, and a pure, yet multi-dimensional fore and mid-palate, followed by a truly silky and beautifully long finish. Lovely juice ! Will continue to age well for at least a further 5, maybe even 10 years.

  • I’m digging this wine. A light ruby color that is still youthful at the rim. The nose is framboise sauvage, cinnamon and purple flowers. Wow is this complex. The palate is a bit richer than other vintages but is still light and transparent. Just great. So deep and savory. I think most reviews are underrating the quality here. Love the style. Grand cru quality that will age beautifully. (94)

  • Translucent ruby, with a bit of bricking around the edges. Lovely nose fills the glass with copious red fruit - wild raspberries and redcurrants, poached prunes, damp earth and forest floor. Full-bodied palate, textured, elegant with just enough tannic grip into a long, silky finish. Classy juice for this level.

  • This bottle never entirely opened up, two hours in and the wine felt tight still. Not tannic, it wasn't about the structure, but the material itself - the aromas and flavors felt like they were wrapped around themselves, and hadn't yet blossomed. I've had bottles of this that did open and were truly lovely. This one was entirely correct, but just needed 10 years in the cellar.

  • Decanted 1 hour. Garnet, some bricking. Subdued bouquet, palate is high toned cherry with acidity prominent but not overbearing. Some violet hints on the medium final. Tannins completely integrated, medium bodied.

Well balanced and enjoyable tonight but not as good a showing as my other bottles. Think these are slowly winding down.

Note from day 3 after opening: Coming back to this wine 3 days on I do not think it is winding down - more likely still too wound up. The wine was certainly fuller tonight, with perceptible minerality. Overall profile remains middling in terms of body and depth of fruit, but there is good balance and complexity here. Score adjusted.

  • High toned and floral, but still tight. Needs time- but not sure if that's 5 years or 10.

  • Incredibly backwards and tight, showing but a bare trace of iron and earth on opening. With air you get purple flowers and cherry flesh appears on its minerally bones. It remains rigid and compact and needs another decade at least.

  • Moderately expressive on the nose with notes of earth, coke, anise and leather. Round and tasty, some structure, good length. Restrained elegance. Had this with friends for a tasting of Burgundy 2005, and in spite of this note perhaps sounding a little boring, the wine was indeed very well appreciated. I bet on the fruit holding up until the tannins are fully resolved and will drink my remaining four bottles over time up toward 2025. Reading some of the other tasting notes on this wine, it could even be interesting to revisit even later.

  • Rather astringent and closed on opening, needs some air to waken up, and only after two hours is it really approachable. Moderately expressive and complex nose of furs, licorice and wood/earth. focused and sappy taste, well rounded and good length. Will probably keep well through its twentieths birthday.

  • Faded ruby. Light and earthy to start with little fruit. It blossomed marvelously over 2 hours to show tart cherry and more ripeness while keeping its lean underlying structure and soil. I'd have to think that it is just getting started.

  • Decanted 2 hours. Followed over 2 hours. Pale ruby. Subtle bouquet of violets and cherry, some mineral presence. Slow attack, gently builds to an impressive mid-palate of dark cherry and sous-bois. Acidity is an important part of the balance and generates a sense of tautness throughout the long final. Medium bodied and fine tannins that are fully integrated.

Drinking very nicely now. This is a wine for those who appreciate subtler Burgundy but everything is there in spades for those who do. Superb winemaking and quite a steal at the price.

  • Light red with brick hue; mature color. Taut red fruit aromas are the primary characteristic. Delicate sois-bois and fleeting floral notes. Not a powerful nose. Palate has crisp structure dominated by light red berries and red apple skins. Rather high in acidity with barely discernable notes of earth. 2 hours open and no significant development. A diplomatic way to put it is that this is a very delicate Burgundy, but additional depth and texture would be welcome. Disappointing for a 1er Cru in a great vintage. Last tasted in 2014 with similar notes. No further upside expected so drink up in 2018-2019.

  • Way way way improved from my previous note several years ago. PnP, but over about an hour dark rich black fruit notes, blood orange, meat all emerged. What a difference a few years made.

  • Drinking very nicely after an hour in the decanter. Fresh raspberries, rose bush, and potpourri. Delicate on the palate and finishes very savory.

  • This wine sings sings sings ... incredibly fresh, mineral and pure, this is really my style of wine. Cherry stone all the way and very very long. I love this wine. 93+ as it could still improve

  • This is excellent wine. It starts out very slowly, disjointed and almost severe. I think that it is maybe 5 years too early to be getting into this wine, based on what I experienced tonight. At first there is a whiff of dark fruit, and not a whole lot else. But after 90 minutes open the wine begins to articulate itself, showing a prominent mineral side, with savory elements of wood and charcoal, rock, and something like shrimp paste. Yup. And then there are waves of fruit, and it is vivacious, juicy, and alluring high toned red fruit, and still noble and focused. Two and a half hours in and the wine just sings. Energetic and driving, with sweet and complex fruit and savory aromas and flavors too, and all perfectly balanced, showing great purity, and completely harmonious. The finish is very long and entirely mineral. There is an awful lot of wine here, in a humble package.

  • 2nd time tried from my cellar and still disappointing. Ruby red in color with mostly earth on the nose. Fruit totally lacking with mostly earth and a hint of spice on the palate. Same as last time tried 2 years ago. I don't find the fruit that other CT tasters find in this wine. Will hold my last 2 bottles for a few years and maybe some fruit will emerge.

  • Subtle nose but elegant. Floral. Light bodied, with noticeable tannins and bright acidity that verges on dominating the finish. Seems much younger than 10yrs. Needs more time.

  • Pale ruby. Earthy, red-fruited ahd high pitched aromas of wet leaves and tree bark. Sappy and deep palate with tiny cranberry, mushrooms/ earth, and dirt. Silky smooth and surprisingly gripping finish. This needs a few more years. Very impressive at this price point (I paid $35 on release).

  • '05. Need I say more. When it's right, it's just right. Pretty pale magenta. Very expressive nose, darker red fruits beyond cherry, ok maybe kirsch, somehow lacquered in to make it more intense, though those words really don't make any sense. Something ineffable behind the fruit, I dunno, there's earth and an almost vinyl-like but at the same time appealing and not chemical or artificial flavor. Wish I could put my finger on it, but I feel like Tantalus and it's just beyond my grasp.

Beautiful ripe red fruits in the mouth, exploding berries, perfectly balanced. Good to go.

  • To paraphrase DeNiro or pre- hipster Brooklyn, "Fuhgedaboutit." After an encouraging look at a vibrant medium red/ color, the absence of any nose did not deter hopes for this wine to have unfolded more than it had two years ago. Instead of developing more fruit and complexity, and curing the mid- glass fall off back then, this wine never opened. An absence of fruit, matched by a tiny fleeting berry taste, with no nose. Even after decanting part of the bottle, an hour brought forth nothing but a little increase in corps. And it was not in a dumb stage. So while I acknowledge the small possibility that a PV will develop further, I would suggest holding for 3 years or using now for boeuf bourgignone.

  • Blind at Anita: Slightly pale ruby; this was very juicy, fresh, with red berries, strawberry, slight spiciness. Nice cool fruit aspect to it, drinking well, and pleasant. Would probably get a higher score if drank solo.

  • Rather tight at first, we gave this an hour or so of air and it was much more approachable when we poured it at the restaurant. This is showing one note on the palate right now, raspberry and raspberry tea, not much nuance or additional detail, although that may also be a function of the sub-optimal stemware. I understand that I am supposed to judge young Burgundy based on texture (which makes sense with this wine, because there isn't much else showing on the palate), and in a textural context, this is just smooth and silky and lovely. It's also really well balanced, with the tannins soft and no oak or acidity sticking out, and while the palate is one-dimensional, the finish is long. Hold and try again in five years.

  • Light red colour.
Closed, but reviels some ripe raspberries and almonds. Fresh and tight on the palate. Savoury with tight finish. Traditionally made. Save for 5-10 years more. Hopefully the fruit lasts that long.

  • Still very, very closed for the first hour or so. Pretty tannic and heavily acidic. After a while in the glass, it opened up a good deal, tannins and acids mellowed a bit and it became beautiful and silky with an expansive palate. Seems to need a few more years to enter a prime drinking window.

  • Light and transparent purple red. Earthy and mineral on the nose, also pine, wet leaves and underwood. Maybe some old barrels too? Reminds me about oldfashioned winemaking. In the mouth, silky, but tight and concentrated with lovely acidity. Low extraction here. Improved in the glass. I believe this is a stayer, 10+ years. I really liked this.

  • At first, sunset in the hills outside Beaune. Soft, darker fruit envelops the Nose and palate. Plum, dark cherry, a hint of smoke and tart fruit. But it does not hold. Even acknowledging the youthful age and potential of the vintage, this wine is just a fine Pernand , not more. Do wait a bit to prevent the acid bite that developed after a half hour and to coax the more refined flavors that will evolve. Well made.

  • Somewhat subdued nose albeit shows signs of developing. Still some primary grape but hints of spice, black fruits. Fairly dense body with great balance just beginning to develop and a sense of much more to come as it relaxes. Has the characteristic Chandon de Briailles softness. Medium long finish that ends with dusty tannins. This is youthful but everything seems primed for continued great development. Try again in a couple of years.

  • Completely shut down on the nose. The palate is showing some nice red fruit - still completely primary. It's still very reserved, a little tart, and quite tannic. Should be great potential here, but I would not check in again until 2015+

  • All mineral and earth with notes of soil, shale, chalk, iron and graphite. When I said all mineral and earth, I actually told a lie as there’s some sweet cherry fruit and something animale but undiscernible. This is structured and a little agricultural yet all elements are in balance and it has good power. Way too young but really enjoyable with the beef cheek dish at Tanunda’s Ferment Asian restaurant.

  • Pure, clear ruby color. Delicate nose of red fruit, especially strawberry, and some spices. More accessible while being poured into the decanter than later from the glass. The palate is on the light to medium bodied side - a smidge lighter than I would have liked, although the wine did put on weight in the glass. A red fruit-driven taste that is good but not my stylistic preference. However, the balanced acidity and tannins will provide the structure needed for development, so hopefully this wine will morph into a more mineral, earth driven, secondary stage since I have a couple bottles tucked away.

  • Dark purple but easy to see through the center. Began with licorice and coffee aromatics. First impression on the palate is rather slight, little fruit, tannic, and lots of grip. After about 2 hours, some essence of blackberry appeared on the nose, the wine picked up some body, the structure relaxed a bit, and the first faint hint of black fruit and any sweetness reared its head. I think this is just getting started and will reassess the remaining half of the bottle tomorrow evening.

Second day--Some interesting changes. More translucent color. Absolutely no oxidation over 24 hours. Now, menthol, spice, and even some red fruit on the nose. Still on the lean and light side, sharply focused by substantial acidity and tannin, but prettier, less severe, and more lacy than it first appeared. The soil underpinnings are much more prominent too. Retasting it makes it much easier for me to see the potential for positive development here. Could turn out to be a "mini Volnay", which would not be a bad outcome at all. Thinking about it, amazing that this does not betray its warm, ripe vintage origin in the least.

  • 2005 Chandon de Briailles Burgundies (Vineyardgate, Millbrae, CA): (Rouge) Gentle, intriguing nose of fresh red berries, soil tones, tree bark, perhaps cinnamon. Tart red berries on the palate with good freshness but felt a little flat on the midpalate, I wanted more acidity (which seems odd having now tasted the rest of the wines, but it's what I wrote). A light-bodied, gentle wine that while rather tight currently is nevertheless less tannic than the other reds here and should be approachable much sooner. Really great nose, lots of promise here.

  • From cask: Pale raspberry/cherry. Light nose, with very ripe raspberries and just a touch of sulphur. Nice but somehow seems far-away. Light but well-balanced mouth entry. Quite a big tannic structure. Pleasing lighter style wine, but ultimately may not be big enough for the structure. 3-
