Found a bottle lost in the back of my cellar. Obviously past its prime, but still drinkable. I had it with a bbq flank steak and smashed potatoes. Brambly notes and some stewed fruit. But after all this time, it was nice to see some fruit left. A little hot from the alcohol, but it paired well with the bbq sauce.

Found this laying around the cellar and opened it up to have with a steak salad. Some bramble, but stewy with a plodding mouthfeel. Showing heat from the outset but as it warmed from cellar temp it was undrinkable (15.7%). Down the drain.

Turley's have such a distinct and consistent aroma/taste profile. This one has all the classic very ripe almost raisiny fruit, high alcohol, cedar, spice, etc. I think this wine is holding up pretty well. Ann and our guests enjoyed it but my tastes have shifted too far from this style for me to get any enjoyment out of it. I drank a small bit, dumped the rest and moved on. Not a bad wine, just not my preference anymore.

I was surprised how well this wine held up for a 2005 Zin. I thought it definitley would be on the downward slope but it still tasted very vibrant. On the palate, bright cherry and plum fruits followed by spicy pepper and subtle graphite notes. Zesty acidity that held up nicely.

Delicious and surprisingly light on its feet; well delineated berry-bramble-menthol flavors come across fresh and lively on the palate. No apparent heat from the 15.7% abv. Not particularly complex but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Nose is the best element of this wine, with a melange of cranberry, sous bois and oak that is nicely riotus. Flavors tend to green, however, with certain nice flavors of evergreen, sour cranberry. But really, it is too green on the palate, but the nose is quite worthwhile right now.

First we must note this is entry level Turley, $20 on release with $3-4 going to that ridiculous, potential murder weapon of a bottle they insist on using. I call on all CT Turley future buyers to beg Turley to go to a more envioromentally friendly bottle that will actually fit in a standard wine rack system. Please, call and email Turley. Now how they could make a wine at 15.7% alcohol that still tastes green and vegetal is beyond my home-winemaking, wish I had studied Vit-Eno while at Davis brain. I speculate too many stems and some green grapes (zin is notorious for uneven ripening) got into this wine, or maybe just vine age. I hate overripe and underripe zins and this is in the latter category. Green, vegetal nose with some decent purple fruit and spice, the wine enters with a decent ripe cherry flavors but exits with a nasty, Central coast cab, green pepper vegetal flavor, along with some nice cracked pepper and a somewhat wine-redeeming acidity that keeps it alive. Not totally unenjoyable, not very good either. I liked it better than the high VA, porty, overripe stinkbombs I sometimes get from Turley, but really, they could do better.

Black, brambly fruits up front, then turning to almost sour cherry and lots of acidity and some oak. Mellowed out a little with being open a couple of hours. Overall, just not very complex, but it's not high-priced either. More of a food wine than most zins. 9/4/09 Noted black cherry and cola as predominate, and less of an oak presence than the previous note. Matched very well with grilled pork chops and grilled corn.

All zin spice, pepper and high in acid, without the fruit to balance. Too acidic for my taste, but maybe this is like a good French Rhone? Pulled together a bit on the second day, but not a fruit bomb by any standards. I would have liked more concentration and roundness at this price range. Higher level wines have been much better.

NOSE: very pretty: floral a bit spicy; kind of smells like a freshly baked apple pie; background aroma of paint is a bit off-setting.
BODY: fine particulate matter suspended in the wine casts a slight haze throughout; purple tinged ruby colored; medium-light bodied
TASTE: a bit on the tannic side; flavors of baking spices and baked bing cherries dominate this wine; a bit thin, with a moderate finish (approx. 30 secs.). This is definitely a light Zinfandel, and should probably be consumed now or in the very near future.
EDIT: I saved a bit of this wine to see if it would improve over a couple of days. I had the remaining couple glasses tonight (3/23/3008) and it was nothing but V/A. Absolutely awful. Knowing what I know now, I would amend my above score to 86 points, now that I know there's absolutely no room for improving with time. As the wine drinks tonight, I score it as such:
B: 50, 4, 8, 8, 2 = 72 points/flawed bottle

Very young, very light and very fruit forward but still the classic Turley zin taste. This can't really be beat if you want to pick up a Turley Zin for $22. While not the best Turley it is acceptable and a very easy, every day drinker. I say drink up now. (85-87)

Hmmm... with the wine open for 5 hours, not decanted, this showed pleasant chocolate-laced red fruits and spice. Very acidic, approaching VA-levels. Throughout the night, the fruit seems to fade, leaving a very acidic shell behind with alcohol becoming more noticable (was not noticable for the first hour), leaving it seem thin--even a slight green streak appears (which I would not have expected from Turley). Reminds me of a low-level rustic Burgundy. A real puzzler here. While I've enjoyed some acidic Barbera, this was just too much (and grossly over-priced at retail).

Our first Turley, I think Marquis on Davie, is the only place in Vancouver to import Turley. I'm not a huge Zin fan, but we were won over by this wine. The nose was much better than the taste, brambly, chocolate. Taste was actually very subtle, I was expecting a huge over the top wine, refined tannins, and for 15.75 % hardly noticed the alcohol. The only major draw back was the finish, it was a bit short.

Firm and deep purple color with a bright nose of ripe red raspberry and some notes of spice and an edge of musty earth and mushrooms...a little surprising. Good mouth feel that rounded out over time with a simple structure showing nice fruit at mid palate and a lingering finish...an easy drinker.

Much better than it was 6 months ago. 2 hours in the decanter seemed to take away a lot of the acidity and make this wine quite drinkable. Not as spicy as most Turleys, but a good wine for the $22 price tag.

Tasted at home without food. Bright disc. Opaque purple robe with violet rim. Clean nose, showing quite intense aromas of raisins, blackberries, licorice and underbrush. Full-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity, big sweet tannins and ripe flavors which mirror the nose. Long but hot finish. Were Parker and I tasting the same wine?

I think I overrated this a bit the first time, but I still like this workingman's Turley as a lighter alternative to the bigger, spicier version. Don't get me wrong I love the bigger spicier Turley better, but the price on this one, you can't beat it.

This wine drank much better after having been opened for a few hours. It was a bit acidic and tart during lunch but filled out and mellowed some later that night for dinner. I would imagine a few years will do this wine well.

A very restrained and balanced zin that is youthfull and lacking "heat". Aromas and flavors of berry, licorice, plum and pepper. This is quite different from the big zin's that you often see. The nose is very muted at first, but opens up after 30 minutes to reveal raspberry and pepper.

Turley refers to this as a "Wednesday wine" and I think that's a perfect name for this. Not the big robust zin, much lighter, but still very tasty and refined. For the price, it's a great way to get over the hump of the work week.

Judgment reserved. I don't think this vintage is ready to drink in July 2007. I'm tempted to give it at least a year. Drinking right now very different from previous Juveniles. Some spice notes, but not as full bodied as expected, or at least yet.

I am very conflicted about this wine. I let it decant for about 6 hours and tasted all along the way. It was not very zin like at all. I found the palate pleasant, but I thought it was lacking complexity and some of the spiciness I usually associate with a good zin. I was expecting more from a Turley's wine

Easily the weakest Juvie in the past few years. It did taste better on the 2nd night but showed a bit oxidized. First night, this was acidic and angular only hinting at zinfandel's known profile. Night two, brambly fruit, but just did not have the stuffing of previous vintages. Disappointing.

Overy fruity and rich; way alcoholic. Required some chilling to calm the alcohol which had previously burned my nostrils to a crisp. Promising nose hints of Pinot Noir but in the mouth falls short with watery fruity weak-acid lameness. Someone let me know if this somehow improves.

OK. I have said a bit about 2005 CA pinot but the 2005 Turley Juvenile in really hits its stride in a more restrained vintage such as 2005. The nose on this wine reminds me of a good pinot with a subtle combination of floral elements with blackberry and raspberry. Less brambly and more focused than most zins you will encounter. The label says 15.7% alcohol, but I do not perceive any heat. This wine shows how a winemaker can bring out both vintage characteristics while continuing a house style.

Based on the Parker rating and other tasting notes my expectations were very low. Although not a "normal" Turley and not really in the style that I enjoy, this is not a bad bottle of wine. It is very clear, simple and a little tart. It will pair well with BBQs this summer as long as the food is not overbearing.

The nose is very muted at first, but opens up after 30 minutes to reveal raspberry and pepper.

still fairly young but opened up after 2 hours. Initial nose was closed.
Still a very nice Zin, plenty of fruit and more complexity after airing.

It will pair well with BBQs this summer as long as the food is not overbearing.

not as rich as I would expect from Turley. Bland.
