The '05 Clos Vougeot was simple, but very attractive and is drinking well today.
On the nose, I found red berry fruit, red florals, and a bit of sweet spices, a very classic expression, remaining very primary today. On the palate, the wine is medium to light in body, lacking a bit of depth and with a bit of an unsatisfying finish, but again what was there was quite attractive, with red fruit, sweet spices, and dark floral tones.

Deep and layered, with notes first red and later of darker fruit, some animalic notes, graphite, some sweet spices, violets, also some minerailty. Medium-full bodied (in the context of Burgundy), with good persistence, there is still some medium tannin that is a little rough and might never fully dissolve, and some medium-high acidity. Good length. A very beautiful Clos Vougeot that is at the beginning of its drinking window.

The one with Liz (Home): A lifted style complete with dark ripe fruit which was showing quite correctly for the vintage. Good depth and layered with some complexity while showing quite elegant. What was slightly confusing to me was that my experience with Potel wines have always been a bit more burly, masculine and at times, even a little brash with a stubborn tannic structure - this has changed my mind about Potel!

Drinking very well now...approachable for an 05 C-V. Lots of material here. This is a masculine and dense Grand Cru. The great vintage shows. Poured next to a 2013 Raphet C-V which was quite a contrast. The Raphet was much lighter-bodied with snappy red fruit. This Potel was a more brooding/serious wine showing a bit more black fruit. But the Potel did not come across as modern. Just a stacked wine. Showing some development after 15 years - nice forest floor elements add complexity. Should hold - and possibly improve - for many years. Was great with a hearty beef dish.

A little too extracted for my taste. Dark, plummy fruit, a little barolo-esque, with some nice minerality and structure in there. Enjoyable but not my favoriate style of Burg.

Taken out to dinner and opened about an hour prior to tasting. Medium deep red; rather restrained savory nose with some red fruits. Initially this was quite tight, especially on the finish; over the next 2-3 hours it slowly evolved into showing more and less tannic fruit and better overall integration. This bottle seemed too young to be showing well; I will save my last one til age 20 or thereabouts. Seems to have the material to evolve into something very good.

My number 5 of 9 at Old Burgundy Tasting. This wine had the most fabulous, enveloping nose of all the wines. Although an excellent wine, the palate did not quite fulfill the promise of the nose. The entry and mid-palate were full of great fruit, which was nicely integrated, but the finish rolled off quickly and felt a little empty. This was still true at hour 6 after opening.

Much better on 2nd day. Elegant and good finish. Shows decent acidity on the finish and more fruit notes than day 1. Need to wait a few years before drinking the next bottle.

Viscous garnet fading at the rim. Complex, foresty nose - wild berries, pine needles, menthol, almost juniper, with tertiary licorice root and white pepper. With air the medicinal notes quickly evaporate, leaving concentrated strawberry fruit perfectly balanced with ripe acidity and gentle tannins. Like the best pinots this has layers of flavor that go on and on. Maybe this can get better but it's pretty irresistible now!

Pre-Memorial Day Wine Before/During/After Dinner (Chicago, IL): Bottle had been opened the day before. I was told it was very firm and backward, so was given a day to mellow. Lots of structure was very dominant that second day, in the forefront ahead of the black cherry and berry flavors. Good raw materials so I'd cellar this longer, but don't have a good sense of where/ when this will be more pleasurable.
HK Central Wine Club. 750 ml. Non-decanted. Deep purple. Concentrated nose of cherry and strawberries (burnt). Red fruit medley with some tones of oak, caramel. Quite alcoholic and acidic, but good structure. Nevertheless round, velvety mouthfeel. Still very young. In 10 years?

Winestreet Does 2005 Burgundy (Kozlak's, North Oaks, MN): Wide open for business. Rich, perfumed, fragrant nose. Deep, rich, earthy dark cherries, with earth/forest floor lurking underneath. Quite tannic. A delicious Clos Vougeot. WOTF for me.

Winestreet Celebrates 2005 Burgundy (Potel, Jadot, Bouchard, Girarding, others): The nose gives an elegant expression of red cherry and strawberry fruit with a great spiciness. On the palate this is awesome. Great texture -- soft and pretty with tons of flavor. Great weight. Great balance. Very tannic, but not enough to obscure the excellent finish. Should be winner after extended cellaring.

Showing a bit too much brown oaky notes, still in need of more cellar time to integrate. Rosh Hashana at Suzanne and Kenny's.

Corked. What a bummer. A bottle I brought to Aureole one year ago (also with Jim W. and Joe D'A) was glorious. Quality Italian.
