Last enjoyed eight years ago. Still beautiful nose of iron, blackberry jam, and a chocolate menthol sweetness. Mature wine in the mouth with rustic blackberry and licorice, all integrated well. Balanced at a moderate level with just the right amount of fruit, tannin and acidity. This needed 30-60 minutes of air to open.

Absolutely on point. Loaded with garrigue and roasted plum, hint of white pepper, fairly mid-weight for Pegau, reflective of the vintage, just LOADED with energy and a simmering intensity.

Amazing. Tell-tale Pegau showing iron, oxblood, garrigue, sweet Grenache, La Crau speaking loudly here, a classic wine. Drinking a point, I think, shall se what goes on tomorrow. #Kandestederne

Popped and slow oxed for an hour. Great bottle. On the lighter side for CdP which is fine by me. Dark fruits, bramble, earth all melded together. Drink now.

Quite pale. A bit pinched in the nose and palate to start. Some air brought out some breadth and more interesting notes of leather and cherry menthol. A touch of alcohol poking out. Last glass much the best after around 2 hours, suggesting a decent decant is worth doing.

Very closed to start, this needed a couple hours to open up for business. Similar to my last bottle, I didn't enjoy this as much as other vintages I've tried. That said, note that this bottle was from auction, so not sure if it was fully representative.

Great example of a mature CdP. Decanted to remove sediment. Aromas of bruised black raspberry, charcoal, bay leaf, and black olive. Complex and deep. Gobs of melted licorice/anise in the mouth supported by unsweetened black cherry jam, and minerally soil. Medium weight and medium tannins. Rustic, savory, and drinking beautifully. Couldn't ask for more from this vintage.

I had to open this at the restaurant due to another event immediately preceding dinner. The nose was much more restrained out of the bottle than I'm used to with Pegau. It did end up showing well with some air, albeit with less nuance than expected.

Monthly Tasting Group: Rhones (Noyes and Cutler, St. Paul, MN): Dark red color. Drank a small glass over an hour. This followed the gorgeous flight of '94 Beaucastel and '00 Donjon and it was a tough act to follow. I always love Pegau, but in the aftermath this felt quite youthful despite its 16+ years. Rather bold and spicy tonight, but still with all the class of Pegau if not the expected nuance.

James & Carries btl at our Sunday night big wine group Rhone dinner at Noyes & Cutler. A perfect Lowertown St Paul venue for our group and theme! Great food, service & roomy! I've sworn off the vast majority of CdP but Pegau rarely disappoints and tonight's 06 was lovely! In a pretty nice place right now but plenty left in the tank too.

Wine at perfect place right now. Dark red color, complex red berry nose. Cherry notes plus plum plus garrigue ending with a lovely sweetness. C9P at its best. Wonderful length.

Very evolved. Tannins gone; some beef bouillon notes and pale brown meniscus. Cloudy. Purchased on release and kept in Vintage Keeper at 12°C so not poor storage. Nowhere near the depth and enjoyment as the 2004.

Typical Pegau funk on this nose as expected. Up front fruit profile of red cherry, black raspberry, and dark plums. Mid-palate notes of leather, earth, grilled meat, dried herbs, mushrooms, and olive tapenade. Still has some good acidity, smooth tannins, and nice finish. 2006 wasn't the best CdP vintage but this bottle is holding up just fine.

Very good place at the moment. Grenache comes through clearly on the mouth now that the tannins have integrated completely. Mrs said Plumy raisiny. I wouldn't have gone that far but well balanced if not overly complex. Would agree drink now

Medium- bodied, traditional styling. PnP, consumed over 3 hours from decanter. Quite a genteel and classic CdP nose and palate, with little of the funky Pegau additions you might expect. Light red fruit, dried herbs, clay dust, mushrooms. Good balance and decent length, but less complete than when younger. Would drink now, or within the next few years before it loses more fruit and concentration.

I was was pleasantly surprised given some of the recent reviews. In my view, this is in an almost perfect spot now. Beautiful nose which balances mostly red fruit with savory herbs and just a hint of Pegau funk. Palate holds up its end of the bargain, with no overly ripe/old notes. As others have noted, this is on the lighter side of Pegau. Served with roast lamb, but probably deserves something a little less hearty. 92-93 range.

Dinner with Friends (R&R's): From magnum, double decanted off its sediment a couple of hours before dinner. Red berry fruit dominates the nose and palate. Terrific earth and garrigue undertones, with a wonderful spice, almost clove, on the palate. Drinking beautifully, if on the young side in this format.

BP’s bottle. Drinking well. I like the restrained, more elegant nature of this vintage. As I read James Molesworth’s original note, I would think I was drinking a different wine, other than the fresh acidity and garrigue part. Happy to have a couple, and no need to rush with these.

Reviews from ERIC, CSIMM116, DBKITC below nail the profile. Back in the day, Wine Spectator noted that this wine had 'buried garrigue' in it, but that burial took 15 years to be rebirthed as an explosion of garrigue, muddy barnyard funk, with pine, tar, fig, and black currant. Maybe it will get better, but a very unique flavor profile that drinks well right now.

Sappy, delicious and spicy with pine needle, garrigue and raspberry. Maturing very well, still plenty of weight and primary vigor. Maybe a touch of bitterness on the finish, but overall this is lovely.

Signature Applewood bacon and mulch kick off the launch of earthy dark red and black berry, kirsch, cedar plank, garrigue, soppressata, sandalwood, and earthy funk flavors that culminate in a medium-bodied display of ripe fruit that is disciplined by the traditional sightings of damp soil, compost, and leather notes. With air, the core deepens and the finish elongates. It starts to taste more advanced than it is, which actually adds interest and complexity. Though this will last for some years to come, I prefer a drink now approach, as this is at what I would suspect to be the apex of its freshness trajectory. 92-94 points.
My greatest day of wine (over)consumption. Ever. (Aaron and Tiffany's pad): An unannounced but most welcome guest, this was the second wine brought by dfc. On the nose and palate, all manner of red and dark fruit from strawberries, rhubarb, red cherries to dark berries, figs and plums; dry earth, garrigue, funk, a bit of smoked meats and incense. Medium to dark garnet, medium+ bodied, medium-thick legs. Medium++ acidity, medium tannins, no heat. High on complexity, persistence and intensity. Unlike most of what we drank, the Pegau CR is an old friend, whether the late '90s-early aughts vintages with an acidity driven, red-fruited feel, or the '09 with its brettiness, darkness and almost port-like quality. This vintage did a great job of marrying qualities of both. Great structure made it my second favorite food wine of the night, hot on the heels of the '09 CH Astralis, but also rock solid on its own. While this bottling always seems to turn into a third rail wine, my experience was clearly more like the last 2 writers than the several who preceded them. Really fresh, and if the '98 is any indication, will be in great shape for a decade to come, although there's certainly no need to wait. A close second as my favorite CdP producer to Clos des Papes. Underrated on CT and a screamer at the WS price.

Second Sunday Group: 2008 Ken Wright Pinots (Fontina’s Italian Kitchen (MiY)): Double decanted off its sediment and poured a couple of hours later with dinner. Notes of black fruit, pine sap and garrigue with a subtle barnyard funk in the background. Flavors of black currant, licorice and garrigue. A fine showing, and if representative, just entering its window. Happy to have a couple more, plus mags, set aside.

Clear bottle that showed terrific. Aromatic wine with dried fruits, Sandler wood, provincial spice. Red fruited palate, some mild sandy tannins. Quite spicy and nuanced, with just a hint of alcohol. Really solid, but may be just starting to “dry out” a bit.

91 pts

Somewhat oxidized notes on the nose, such as dried porcini, nuts and dried figs. That said, the balance on the palate is laidback and really enjoyable. Melted tannins, complex flavours, unremarkable alcohol, low acidity and refreshing salinity. Fully mature, drink up.

Not too intense colour, nice but relatively closed bouquet of jammy red fruits, some vanilla and a touch of wood on the nose. Taste is nicely integrated acidity, bitterness and fruit have melted into each other. It is not the blockbuster CdP but a more softer not so outspoken Grenache wine. 2006 was indeed a cooler year in between the 2005 and 2007 top vintages and the wine makes me think of a burgundy in a hot year like 2003. At its peak, don't wait. I decanted for 2 hours but 30 minutes is more then enough here, less decanting should preserve more freshness

Turning brown at the edge. Ripe, ripe black fruit - plum, fig, jam, asphalt, touch of oaky vanilla. Sweet, "gobs of fruit" as Parker would say. So inviting. The sweetness is tempered by a subtle acidity. Rich, juicy, soft tannins make it very easy to drink. The 14% alcohol is not a problem - you don't notice any heat at all. Very well balanced. Just starting to enter its peak. Slight woody note at the finish. Not especially long, but more than decent. Very hard to stop drinking this. I normally drink, at most, a half bottle at a time, but I don't think I would have a problem finishing a whole bottle of this. This has enough stuffing to go up against a spicy mergueze sausage. Popped and poured. Drink with pleasure now, but will surely get more complex with time.

Consumed over 8 nights, using VacuVin/refrigerator. From opening to last sip, a very expressive nose of leather, minerals and red fruit. Medium body, luxurious mouthfeel without heaviness, tannins fine and well in check, nice acidity. A joy to drink, and I think it will last another 10 years without much if any decline.

A delightful bottle. Was pretty much ready to go on opening. It evolved slightly over the next couple of hours becoming a little bit smoother. Youthful red fruit flavors (my wife thought the fruit profile was more dark than I did), a bit of wild spice, a bit of anise, and some earthy flavors. Full bodied with a long finish that has a nice bit of spiciness at the end.

Appearance: medium ruby, some garnet highlights, just starting to show some rim variation, medium sediment.
Nose: clean, developing, medium+ intensity, ripe strawberry, ripe cherry, ripe red plum, blackberry, black plum, licorice, lavender, thyme, violet, rose, hot stone, scorched earth, smoked meat, old leather, alder smoke, dried strawberry, candied cherry, fig.
Palate: dry, medium acid, medium+ tannin, high alcohol (14%), medium+ body, pronounced intensity, long finish, ripe strawberry, ripe cherry, ripe red plum, blackberry, licorice, black pepper, lavender, thyme, violet, hot stone, scorched earth, alder smoke, braised beef, soy sauce, dried strawberry, kirsch, fig.
Overall: A traditionally styled CdP with lots of herbal and savory notes. Ripe red fruits are still dominant, but some delicious umami and meaty flavors are beginning to develop, as well as some more tertiary fruit tones (candied/dried red fruits and figs). The structure is pretty good, though I think the acid could be a tad higher, and the finish is long and satisfying. Overall a good example of a middle-aged Southern Rhone.

To my tastes, this bottle has reached the perfect stage of CDP evolution. The fruit is rich and unctuous with cherry fruit roll up flavors dominating and earthy, slightly leathery garrique undertones. The tannins on the longish, spicy finish are still on the chalky side, but in harmony with the rest of the elements in this wine. This remains one of my favorite traditionally styled CDPs.

Crimson in color. 14% ABV. Savory nose of red fruits, leather, garrigue and olive tapenade. Medium to full bodied with strong acidity. Clean and fresh. Cherries, kirsch, herbes de Provence and blood on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Very good CdP from just an average vintage but not on par with other recent versions including the 03, 05 and 09. Drink over the next 2-3 years.

I love Pagau, nice southern rhone garrique aromas and flavour. This bottle showing a little less well than a previous one as the rich viscous nature of grenache seems more dominant. Tastes more like a riper vintage like 2007.

Medium-to-deep garnet in color, Pégau's 2006 Cuvée Réservée delivers aromas and flavors of dark bramble fruits, cinnamon, cocoa, black olives and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, fresh and with nicely integrated alcohol (14%), its tannins are quite supple at this point, giving the wine a silky mouth texture. Dense in the middle and medium in length on the back end, this is ready for prime time drinking. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years. Drink now-2024.

Chateauneuf and Hermitage: I believe this was a pop and pour, and I got my small pour after it had been open for an hour at the other table. This was very true to a younger Pegau. The funk is in check. It is very ripe. After drinking 3 older CDP's, this was definitely a contrast in age.

Monthly Tasting Group: Older CDP's and Northern Rhones (P.S. Steak, Mpls): Small glass. This bottle of '06 offers a tad more of acidic freshness and a more lively balance than the '05 we had immediately before, and less alcohol than the '07 we had last week. Lovely. This was wine of the night for me. The nose was a lovely melange of meat, and earth and sweet cherries and berries, with a hint of violet flowers and garrigue at the edges. I loved this. The palate was just on the edge of being too young, but alteady starting to drink nicely, with a base of savoury meaty earthiness wed to a chew of dark cherries and berries, all perfectly balanced and poised, leading into a long, earthy, mineral, garrigue and lavender laden finish. How very lovely.

Five years since the last one and it has become even better - a calmly assured maturity about it. Blackberry, garrigue and a bit of funkiness on the nose. Pop and pour and enjoyed after dinner on its own over two hours with my wife. This is a rich and smooth wine. It’s extremely generous and easy on the palate with silky mouth feel. Decanted 2 hrs. This Pegau was simply on point last night, very fragrant on the nose, multiple dimensions on the palate such as kirsch, lavender, a little black olive, and a touch of black cherry preserves. But, this is much lighter on its feet than the 07, which seems to be dominated by baked plums which mask any other qualities that could emerge. Think of this as a very close runner up the superb 04 Reserve, which is very high praise in my book.

I really liked this. Decanted; very dark in the decanter. Evolved a fair amount both on the nose and in the mouth. Violet, garrigue, pepper, grilled, marinated veggies, dark cherry; lots going on. Had a good backbone to match with food. Think this is at its peak.

Popped and poured. Pale crimson color. Cherry and white currant fruit with spice and herb undertones. On the lighter side of medium-bodied; flavors of red fruit, pepper and spice. CdP and Beef at the Woody's (Kyla's Kitchen): I think this bottle had a 3-4 hour decant and Joe said the "funk" was pretty heavy initially. Cherry core with a hint of bricking on the edge. Cherry note on the nose with secondary development very obvious, leather and spice with a nice wild garrique note. On the palate it is rich (but not fat or flabby) I'm drinking it ever so slightly chilled (proper cellar temperature) Lovely wine, at a perfect crossover between fading fruit and secondary development. This note is based on the second half of a bottle (decanted into 375ml). I have stored this wine in my house so may be more evolved because of that.

Beautiful nose of iron, meat and black olive tapendade. Mature wine in the mouth with rustic blackberry and licorice, all integrated well. Balanced at a moderate level with just the right amount of fruit, tannin and acidity, albiet not half the stuffing of the stunning 2003 of this wine I had several months ago.
Lost fidelity by the fifth hour, which makes me wonder about the longevity.

Popped and poured. The nose is reserved at first with just the faintest note of fine leather. While this is not extremely complex, it is silky, graceful and very enjoyable. Ann and I found that we had to slow ourselves down as this is quite chuggable.
With some air, some beef jerky, blood/mineral and spice notes emerge. The wine becomes more masculine. I like it.

Bright crimson in color, this wine reveals morello cherry, black pepper, olive tapenade and tobacco on the nose. The mouth feel brought intense, somewhat sweet tannins and elements of blood, iron and lavender. The finish was long, complex and intense with ever deepening sweet tannins and acidity that kept coming out longer and fuller. 14% abv.
Recently purchased at retail for $74US, this wine is drinking so well right now It paired perfectly with my Thanksgiving dinner.

First try. Very complex, here is transformation in place from the first second. A little bit to much of figs and plums in the beginning. Heavy alcohol, demands food... needs air, I think I'll enjoy it even more in a cuple of days

Strongly vegetal at first but, after a 2 hour decant, became really balanced. Medium tannins and nice structure. Not a blockbuster but very, very nice.

DTC Chateauneuf du Pape (@ SS): In the bouquet very ripe dark forest fruits as well as cherries, some development end minerals. On the palate dark berry fruits, garrigue, ink, licorice, laurel, juicy acidity, sweetness, some barnyard, firm tannin and at this moment the wine (this bottle) lacks some refinement. Not sure if this bottle is 100% fresh. No score.

For Labor Day of ribs and burgers. Gaminess, earth and leather, but dark fruits still come through. Nice acidity makes me believe this will have some life left.

Slightly less than two years after the first note, this still presents well. Elegant in the mouth, with nice fruit mixed with pepper and grilled meat. Smokey, some gaminess, but in a elegant not rustic package.

Excellent notes of hoisan sauce, leather, light garrigue spices, and a touch of barn yard. Medium body, only 14%, coming into its own, but still on the verge of being primary with red berries, plum skin, dark raspberry and dusty minerals. Very tasty with a very savory fillet mignon and cuitlacoche sauce at Babita.

About 7 years cellared. Decanted 1 hour, should have gone longer. Continued to develop complexity over a few hours. Subtle nose w/ earth, pepper, black fruits integrating nicely. The body is dark, soft, very fine tannins are present. Quite mellow - almost no brightness, but the CdP blend and balance are just outstanding.

On opening this smelled great, but did not taste that good. After about an hour it stopped tasting bad, but was fairly different from what my previous notes indicate. My wife said "this is really deep dark." It wasn't terribly fruity. A lot of earth flavors, some dark fruit, and overall a little bland but with a nice little zing on the finish that kind of redeemed it from dullness. It continued to smell beautiful throughout - spice garrigue and red berry fruit, but the palate never lived up to that.

Much better bottle than previous note. Fresher, with more fruit to accompany the barnyard and earthy notes. Still maintain this is at its peak. Will finish remaining bottles this year.

Over 4yrs from my last bottle. The fruit had receded a bit and is now slightly in the background. Still, great depth and complexity. Slightly darker fruit profile and plenty of spice, iron, and touch of beef blood. Showing plenty of tannin with a lengthy finish. Doesn't have the plushness or fullness of the warmer years but plenty to like here. Drink or hold.

Disappointing. Color shows considerable browning. Way more mature than I would have expected. Fruit fading. Maybe a bad bottle. Hope the remaining ones are better than this.

Very ripe fruit, mainly plums and apricot, but also a slightly oxidized expression and some tobacco and violet. Initially the wine has some barnyard notes but these quickly disappear. The palate has sweet red berries, some ginger and sandy tannins. Acidity is very careful and soft but still present. For a wine showing this amount of ripe fruit and with a rather low acidity it manages to stay surprisingly fresh.

Medium red, browning. As with all of the last 3 bottles, a hefty dose of brett. Quite lush without overripeness, slightly muddled red fruit. Missing some focus and tension due to low acidity.

Warming up to the great 2006-tasting, this was tasted vis-avis the 2007, this comes out ahead with plenty of barnyard, garrigue and even minerality to back it up. Very fresh, very young, this is an absolute beginner, and will live for 10+ years. But if you like the primary, sweet Grenache, it can be drunk now, I shall wait at least a year before opening the next one from my one stash.

Another delightful bottle. While this bottle shared a lot with the previous bottle (garrigue, earth, mineral flavors) this one seemed to have quite a bit more: an intense lush dark fruit on the attack, and this one had some anise throughout also. It took about half an hour to open up but then kept getting better. Did not throw any sediment to speak of.

In the bouquet good garrigue. On the palate red berries, a touch of sweetness and mild acidity and tannin. Although very ok, between all the other wines in this Pégaü tasting, this was one of the least inspiring bottles. Just read my previous notes and the wine might be in a dumb phase now. Probably wise to wait some years. Until 2019 or 2020?

Flavors a bit ripe and monochromatic on first pour (not decanted). Large group so it was drunk and loved, but it would have filled out with airtime and it didn't get that chance. Remind me not to open bottles like this at 2 a.m. :)

Very nice. The nose has a lot of garrigue flavors - smells like an herb garden. On the palate my wife says dark cherry, but I got much more of the herb and mineral profiles, more garrigue, a little stony minerality, some tobacco. My wife thought it was slightly hot but I'm not sure about that. Long lingering finish. Very nice.

Popped and poured. Deep garnet core, pink rim. An absolutely stunning bottle – blackcurrant syrup, kirsch, mocha, liquorish, exotic spices, cedar-wood and faint hints of barnyard on the nose and palate. Rich, concentrated and sweet, but perfectly balanced by a solid structural backbone. Surprisingly fruity and not really showing off a whole lot of the (in)famous Pégaü funk, but has more than enough complexity to make it interesting. A very rare case of a superior bottle opened at exactly the right time – lucky me!

This is really delightful tonight with rich red fruit, abit of bret, some leather, abundant greenish garrigue and a fairly long finish. This is one of my favorite classically styled CDPs that, to my tastes, was drinking really well tonight after about an hour of double decanting.

Quite bretty with barnyardy, funky, animale/worn leather notes, along with soft macerated stewed dark fruits; medium soft and lightly chewy, lower acid at this point, easy going, structure seems to have faded a bit, but grew on me with the Korean ribs and a hot summer night outside.

During a merchant tasting. Medium purple. Expressive nose, so typical of Pegau with a clear animalic/bretty touch, grape stalks, dark fruit and some meat. For me this vintage has just a little bit too much funk (I clearly prefer the outstanding 2010). On the palate medium bodied with good aromatic complexity. Could be cleaner on the fruit though.

Rich fruit, soy sauce, a bit of acid on the finish...definitely one of my favorite CdP houses. I prefer the strong mineral presence in the '07 vintage, but this is still quite delicious. As it opens up, the savory notes become more prominent and the acids less so; I'm hard pressed to say which profile I like more. This is one of those wines that, when I drink it, I think: I must go here, to this part of the world, and see what it is really like.
Lots of coffe, mocha, dill on the nose. Also some beautiful grilled peppered meat, thyme, leather. Cherry pit, sour cherry. Very enjoyable. Extra weight would have lifted the palate.

Medium ruby without fading. Definite brett. Some dark red fruit and bark, but even more volatile acidity, menthol, and funk giving it a rather thin feel. Not a pleasing bottle at all, and the second in a row where I've had real doubts about whether it might be falling apart.

Chateauneuf du Pape 2006 (@ VD): This is the second bottle of Pegau 2006 the last 5 months that doesn't seem to fit with what I am used to from Pegau. Or is it the vintage? I have one bottle myself which I will try to save until 2018 or later, so there will be a follow up on this note. Still a beautiful and elegant wine with in the bouquet some garrigue, tobacco, cocoa and toast. On the palate quite complex and elegant with firm acidity and even some impressions of bell pepper. No more notes and I did not score the wine. (But 90+ no problem)

While I have gravitated away from CdP to Burgundy it can't be denied that there are those CdP you can't live without. Pegau for me is one of them. Their basic 06 is simply outstanding with balance, deep dark black fruit and color to match. Strong structured legs well integrated tannins and nose of smoke, bacon, leather and chocolate. On the palate it tastes as it smells but we a creamy sweetness that is not over the top and the 14% ABV is barely noticeable. Lovely wine and a crowd pleaseure. If there is one downside, and I'm not sure it is a downside, at this point in its development it is the heavy spice and acidity on the finish that really grips and lingers. Finally, while many CdP can be drunk alone and this one can as well, I believe this is a more food oriented expression of this wine.

Popped and poured. A bit light at first but put on complexity in the glass. Just a bit of the gnarly Pegau funk - enough to keep it interesting. Not one of the best Pegau's, but should be very good if it puts on weight and matures in the cellar.

Decanted one hour. Tight and a bit hollow initially, perhaps due to not having fully warmed from my passive New England cellar. After three hours in the decanter the fruit came forward and the wine picked up some richness to go along with its bramble and earth. Really nice wine that completed a strongly flavored meal and was a real pleasure on its own after the meal. This vintage in general is one I enjoy in the southern rhone, and this is a great example of why.

Galoots Lunch (Double Zero Napoletano- Sandy Springs): Classic Pegau, lighter Brett but classic red radish marker, leather, raspberry, fig, garrigue, surprisingly elegant and less brutish than the last example I had; this one seemed to be just entering its drinking window.

A bunch of CdP on a Saturday Afternoon (Loretta Paganini School fo Cooking): I opened this late. It was my back up bottle and so, you know, it got opened anyway. What's a CdP tasting without a Pegau. The nose has some classic Pegau stink on it which I love (and my wife hates). Another reason to open with friends instead of at home. Also plenty of kirsch and spice. Still, plenty of fruit. showing some layers in the glass. On the palate, this has a nice juiciness to it, but it does finish slightly dry. Other than that, a great wine.

I opened this as we were drinking with a friend who really likes barnyard and fink. This had very little of that. Kind of funny to be disappointed that way. In any event the wine rocked. Ruby in color. Still on the young side. Nice spice, cherries and raspberries on the nose. Medium bodied. Juicy acidity. Good fruit on the palate. Went well with tofu prepared pastrami style.

Weekly tasting group #140; A fully blind test. (@ AH): Just a few notes. Beautiful bouquet with some sweet notes and some spiciness, Not the garrigue I am used to from Pegau, but certainly beautiful and still youthful considering the age of the wine. Same on the palate. Served as part of a six bottle blind tasting, this was the clear star of the show. Garnet, showing few signs of age. Expressive nose picked as southern rhone by most everyone in the group. White pepper, black cherry, roasted meat, smoke, and gamey. In a nice spot now. Very silky mouthfeel.

A Labor of Love (and wine and beer) (Our home): Great showing for this bottle. I might even go up a point. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has earthy funk, slight barnyard, Raspberries and Herbs de Provence. Complex and layered, while still youthful, this is getting close to mature. Certainly no hurry, but worth checking in on. Soft tannins. Long finish. One of the crowd favorites.

A Few Rhones at Urban Butcher (Urban Butcher - Silver Spring, Maryland): We decanted this and it started singing. Lots of fruit on the nose to start, cherries, plums, some Fruity Pebbles cereal, but then come the cured meat, olives and pepper. On the palate this is full and grippy, still strong and age-worthy but well balanced. Plums and jammy blackberries, rich and velvety, coated with anise, smoke, bacon and coffee. Some graphite and mineral elements come out on the finish. It got better and better with air, as it will with more cellar time. A gorgeous Pégaü but no rush.

As opposed to a bottle a few months ago, some definite funkiness here. Muted dark red fruit, some garrigue, and a lot of tobacco. Medium weight, good texture supported by strong acidity and a good dose of remnant tannin. Very good but this bottle could have used a few more years.

Archetypical southern rhone nose and palate...dark red fruit, herby garrigue, spices and little licorice, crunchy tannins, and balanced acidity for a fresh, clean finish. As others have noted this is a full bodied, complex wine without being the least bit heavy or extracted.

Within minutes of the wine getting swirled in the glass, a great complexity unfolds. Adequately ripe dark berries, cedar, smoked meat, tobacco, herbs, blood, minerals, and earth components show weight without heaviness. God bless Domaine du Pegau.

Medium ruby core with tawny edge. Bright raspberry and cherry liqueur with mint joining in after several hours of air. Mouthcoating without being syrupy or heavy. Wonderful ripeness of fruit which veers toward the darker red type, and a solid center of licorice drop and tobacco that provides good structure. Completely clean. This is doing very well yet could improve to some extent over the next 2-3 years.

Light red slightly orange throughout. Light red fruit, cooked fruit and tomato nose. Tomato ketchup palate, not overly acidic. weird! Two bottles are the same.

An interesting wine with varied character - initially a fair hit of liqourice then fading into earth and leather - maybe the weather was too warm to really enjoy this - and possibly the 2 hour decant was a mistake as I felt this was fading towards the end - pleasant but drink soon

YES. A really nice wine, real character, a bit more classy that Pegau's usual rustic foursquare style. Deep blackberry notes with still very little secondary aromas. Still seems young. Will last for ages more, I would say.

I like this vintage in CdP. This is balanced. Garrique and roasted meats and leather on the nose and palate, with tart cherry underneath. Nice acidic lift. A bit of barnyard for interest. A wine of its place drinking very well. Works well on a cool winter night.

My last bottle must have been oxidized because tonight this wine really sings. Some maturity, but have time left as the nose delivers herbs, BBQ vegetables, earth and iron. Taste has a nice metallic taste which mixes with the dark fruit in a very pleasent way. Tons of tannins still. No rush here, but enjoys to drink it now.

Felt unbalanced at first, but with some air the sour, oxidized character went away. Goose berries, sea buckthorn, leather, cassics, juniper and flowers comes up immediately. This wine is not shy at all. Taste is smooth, with nice perfyme, herbs and strawberry jam but feels too thinn and hollow to match up the alcohol. I have had many CdP's before and this one is by far the most perfyme dominated. I would say that the wine is on peak and starts to get past it. Have one more. Will drink up soon. As a whole, interesting wine, but for 50 Euros? No thanks.

A OG's wine tasting. Closed at first, the nose a bit, and the palate a lot. Quite a bit of licorice, which did decrease during the night. The alcohol was also very dominating at first. After an hour much more settled and the tertiary notes came through. Nice !!!

Mature ruby, to brick to clear. Typical Pegau nose - grape and blackberry skin, warm dirt and distinct minerals. Really evolved over the evening - sometimes more fruit, sometimes more earth.... Well balanced Chateauneuf with good penetration. Probably will never win a big tasting beauty contest, but that is fine with me. (91)

Two years since last tasted. Open for busienss, but has not starting to show any real tertiary aromas yet. Herbs, dark barries and some wet fur on the nose. Clean medium bodied palate with good supporting acidity. Tannins there, but not obtrusive. I would save this for 4-5 more years. I believe we may have underestimated the 2006 vintage.

Tested this to see, where it is at, now. Not as mature, as I had expected. But my co-drinker (much more experienced and advanced than myself) argued that this would have quite some years left of cellar potential. I tend to agree. A pleasure to drink, and the 2006 vintage proves to be better than many predicted.

Consumed across two days. This is a rather classic and enjoyable vintage of Pegau. Not as vibrant as the 2004 (few vintages are); much more fleshy and full than the 2008. Mid-weight. Loaded with garrigue. My only nit is that it does show a little heat, but that is a nit at best. This is very enjoyable, drinking well already, and surely will benefit from more time in the cellar as well.

Notes from 30 minutes in decanter. Given meniscus, looked older than an '06. Cooked fig, plum, dirt, cherry on nose. On palate, medium body, layered flavor profile - fig, cherry, glycerin, dirt. High acidity, silky mouthfeel, some tannins noticeable on the very long finish. I very much enjoyed. #1 red wine in blind tasting of French wines (WOTN was an '07 Jadot Corton Charlemagne). Would buy again - I tasted this in January of 2010 and it has put on some weight since then but it has excellent depth and an extremely long finish. 94+/-

Tasted double blind. Opened for 2 hours. Reductive nose with animal, reduction aromas and anise. It needs plenty of time in glass to open up and show some red fruit, garrigue and more anise. On palate this wine is medium bodied, quite dry on mid palate and still with present tannins, mainly offering red forrest berries fruit-type. I found the finish to be a bit short. I felt it showed quite tipicidy on nose and still needs either bottle or larger deccant. I would have labeled this wine as a classy CdP profile one. (91-92)

Wow. Beautiful wine. I opened the bottle for a BBQed lamb dinner. Sipped on the the first glass as soon as I opened it (at 14 Deg Celsius). Could not resist the perfume. Wonderful aroma of dark fruit, leather and tobacco. Superb long finish. I will decant it for a couple of hours at room temperature until dinner is ready. Top scores on all levels but quality (only because I don't know how to judge quality so I gave it half the top score) 50+5+15+20+5 = 95.

Lunch at Quay (Quay Restaurant, Sydney): This was very good indeed, but I thought we caught it at a rather awkward moment. It had a wonderful nose throughout the couple of hours it sat in the decanter and in our glasses, with meaty, savoury notes of leather and tobacco bits married to an absolutely perfumed core with lovely floral wafts drifting amidst sweet prunes and redcurrant and dark cherry aromas, all this just dusted with little touch of roasted coconut, spice and garrigue - just lovely. The palate was certainly less complex or expressive though. Still just on the primary side, it had fine tannins providing quite a grip and lots of fresh acidity running through bright, juicy flavours of red fruits and prune on the attack. A very lithe, light expression of CdP I thought, with a nice transparent feel to it, yet still carrying quite a bit of substance. There was a touch more development showing on the midpalate, where little savoury notes mushrooms and meat with sprigs of fennel and garrigue drifted in a rather smoky finish. I enjoyed this, at least until it started shutting down after at the end of the afternoon. Good stuff, but given how it is showing, I would leave aside for another 5-6 years at least.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins. The structure shows the youth of the wine with good depth and really nice tones of black fruits, funky tones, black cherries, and some mesquite with a touch of lavender.
Overall: While this will certainly need time to fully show, it's a classic pegau right now. There is very good depth on both the nose and palate with some nice layering as well.

T-day wine, from magnum. Very nice CdP, serious wine, with great earth-dominated profile of slate, spice, iron, and dark cherry. Persistent, smooth on the palate. Tannins still quite tight on the finish, I think the larger-format bottle could stand another year or two of age before it begins to peak.

No detailed notes. Great quintessential Pegau. Expressive spicy nose with meat, garrigue, and iron. Palate was sharply focused, fine acidity, still a little taught with fine slightly hard tannins on the back end. Almost explosive meat, spice, iodine and blood on the palate with some black cherry in the background. Sandalwood and iron finish. This is in a great place right now at the beginning of what seems like a long drinking plateau. Glad I stocked up on this vintage.

Young Pegau Vertical with Warso: Double decanted for 3 1/2 hours. The first of the Pegau's of the evening. This one has a fairly closed nose. On the palate, the fruit is dark and brooding, with leather, licorice and garrigue in the forefront and white pepper notes on the finish. The tannins are firm and chalky and abit green. This has nice depth, but today the fruit is a little on the shy and reserved side. Still quite nice and Pegau continues to be one of my favorite classically styled CdP's.

Not as enamoured as the last time I tasted it. Seems like quite a rustic vintage, especially compared with the 06 Giraud Grenaches de Pierre which outshone it on all facets. Frankly, it was not that enjoyable given the pedigree of the vintner, the alcohol was very present and it could not have been paired better than with lamb. I hope I am wrong and that this wine just needs more time...

Much improved over last bottle on 8/20/2012. Vinturi and 90 min decant. More deep, concentrated flavors. Tannins more integrated and this wine is ready to go. I'm happy! (Doris enjoyed 30 min after first taste). this wine just needs air time if drinking now.

Darker red color. It is the only wine that shows very ripe, almost prunes like aromas. This can be a bit tiring compared to the other wines. Rich, very ripe fruit, licorice, prunes and spicy aromas on the nose. Full bodied, it seems more concentrated and very spicy on the palate compared to ’04 and ’05, assertive and bigger tannins in the mouth, and a medium plus long spicy finish. A bigger wine, even though the alcohol stays at the same 14%. (91-92/100)

This was interesting. I noticed a few CT reviews that felt this vintage was in "drink up" status, while others felt it was still in a young stage. I'm with the latter group. After decanting an hour, I found this wine to be tannic and a little out of balance, probably needing more time for integration. It was on the dry side, with some acidity and heat. Elegant and silky on the palate in a medium body. Red cherries and dark fruits intertwined with minerals, bramble and earth. Overall, delicious, not as deep as expected, and will try another bottle after another year. Pegau always offers excellent wines and this will not disappoint after more cellar time. (Doris enjoyed but felt it was a little too tannic)

A more traditional CNDP, with tagine spices and a pronounced baked, peach cobbler nose. Palate is also a little rustic but beautifully integrated and balanced with a long, fine spicy finish. No hurry, but delicious now.

Garnet. Nose was granache raspberry but with some more herbal components than usual for Pegau. This added interest for me. Taste was as the nose, with red fruits and fresh oregano and thyme. Delish

Was my entry in a friends wine and cheese evening and have to agree with many of the sentiments on here this is a very beefy CDP with powerful currents only slight criticism is it's not as complex as the 01 or 07.

This was very tasty and certainly a delight to drink with BBQed meats with which it paired very well. However, it supports my conviction that CDP is not an appellation for ageing and I am not sure where the critics got the idea that these wines age because, as some other tasters have noted, it is evolved and in the twilight of its life. You would have thought a 20 year old Bordeaux given the bricking and developed color. A good dose of funky brett announced the nose which never disappeared but gave it extra old world character. It was also quite jammy with cherries and pomegranates. A charcoal texture on entry with red fruits with pomegranite, dried figs and the alcohol quite present. Great, but drink up!

I have found this to be in a very open and mature state---one I was surprised to see in two straight bottles. Very full, sweet and even on the palate, frankly this drinks as easy as the 98 beaucastel. I do not see this going thru the decade (unlike 01, 04, 05, 07) rather I will continue to drink thru mine over the next 36 months. An expensive wine for such a near term drinker---but fully enjoyable so no regrets.

YES. Tried the 2003 earlier in the week and you would not think they were only 3 years apart. The 2003 was well developed with great secondary aromas. This does not seem to be as good a wine, but is still fine. Very classic rustic south rhone, foursquare. What I thought was odd about it was how young it appeared, still with some hard tannic edges. May be a long stayer. Good structure. I will leave it for a year or two before trying again.

Rich Ruby. Nose of strawberry rhubarb pie. Loads of deep red fruit, herbs and garrigue. Very clean and fresh. Generous, with impeccable balance. Full body, long finish. Still a bit primary at the moment, but still a joy to drink. I think 3-4 more years would add complexity. This is what I am looking for in CdP. Excellent.

Took 2 hrs in the decanter to open up. Color is slightly brown despite young age. Soft herbal, earthy aroma with lots of fruit underneath. Medium- heavy bodied. Very smooth palate supported by gripping but fine tannins. There was very little residue in the bottle despite the strength of this wine. The wine feels very young but already a pleasure to drink, and I look forward to drink again in several years' time.

Really an underrated vintage for Pegau IMO; dark, tarry, brambles and earth collide in a medly of rich flavors. This will be dynamite with roast chicken tonight.

Mmmm, Pegau. Very nice. Rustic garrigue on the nose with dark fruits and some meatiness. Some interesting metal/blood tones on the palate upon PnP, but after a few hours (4) of air it was amazingly smooth and well rounded. Good stuff, and I anticipate getting even better.

Beautiful. Red berry fruit, garrigue spice, hints of licorice, pleasant minerality, long finish. A little heavier than medium bodied with crisp acidity. I need to keep my hands off these.

From a 500 ml bottle. This is a wine that needs time. When I opened it yesterday it had bright forward fruit; decent but was a bit unidimensional. I recorked it and put back in the cellar. Today it was awesome. Rich dark fruit with Mediterranean herbs (sage, oregano?) and slight hints of earth and smoke. A complex and interesting wine.

Today, this bottle was bursting with forward red fruit, some garrigue and white pepper. The mouthfeel was fairly delicate, that tannins were dusty and soft. While very good, this bottle was lacking the depth I usually find in Pegau.

Olives, cassis and blackberries (but more crushed than stewed). Lovely, deep, long, funky nose. Very high toned. Shows its 14% alcohol, but not unpleasantly. Very 'clean' (not bretty at all). Lovely wine, showing well now, plenty of aging ahead.

Showing beautifully. Light funk on the nose, with loads of raspberry fruit, pepper, and earthy tones. In the mouth, silky mouth feel and just terrific texture, with forward fruit that is precisely styled and extremely well balanced with the peppery, meaty, earthy nuances that are on a surprisingly light and elegant frame. Bright acidity and some strong tannins that are nonetheless terrifically refined. This is just singing. A

Saturday Night at the Claffee's (The Claffee's): Another exciting bottle from the 2006 vintage. I wish I had bought more of this - the vintage seems primed for aging...maybe a bit like 1994? Dark fruit, earthy and funky - just lovely Pegau.

This was a perfect pairing with Thomas Keller's ratatouille recipe. Classic notes of Herbs de Provence, meat juice and black raspberry. Tannins have settled enough to make this drinkable now (with at least a few hours' decanting), but this will just get better over the next 15 years.

Massive herbes de provence with cherry dominate the palate. With an hour of air in the decanter the wine started to come together although the mouth puckering tannins say check back in 3-4 years.

Not being a fan of CNDP, I actually found this rather compelling. I usually enjoy Pegau's Reservée so I wasn't that surprised. It is very easy to drink right now and quite generous, however the palate and the nose just doesn't seem in sync. Give it a year and I am sure it will be singing! 91+

Prior to Seinfeld, we ate at Tilikum Place cafe---the wine was superb and it will be hard to avoid drinking our stash. I had rabbit (from our farm BTW) and it was jus wonderful too. The wine will age for 15+ years---but will I have any left in our cellar; that I doubt!

Delightful. Red berry fruits but both the nose and the palate are about the garrigue spice and minerality. Very smooth and followed by a long finish where the fruit is a little more pronounced.

Decanted for 3 hours. This is very open on the nose. Initially, the meaty aromas were very noticeable and overshadowed the fruity and floral scents. I've also got the barnyard the others users described. But then, very nice aromas of very ripe figs and plums started to emerge from the glass as well as some liquorice. At this point, both the meat and barnyard were less intrusive. On the palate, this is full bodied with sweet and refined tannins and long aftertaste. This wine is not a crowd pleaser, but a complex and typical CdP. My wife didn't like it at all, but I really enjoyed! It might get better with addittional short-term cellaring, but it's drinking beautifully now. Overpriced, but recommendable anyway. However, I prefer the 2007 Marcoux to this one. 91.

Not closed at all. Forward nose of herbs, some bacon, deep dark fruit. Has not developed too much tertiary aromas yet. Very good balance, full bodied with soft acidity. Tannins not very noticable (but they rarely are in Grenache). Good drinker now if you want a fresh taste in CDP.

My first experience with Pegau, and I'm not sure I like it. There was the 'barnyard' tastes that are often mentioned but this seemed to overpower everything else. Maybe this is too early and will have improved with more bottle age?

We didn't decant which was a mistake. Long legs. Nose full of lush fruit, meat strawberrys and sherbert fizz. Meat on palate with white pepper. Big wine which will age well. Left it for a day and it opened up into a fantastic fruit filled monster. Well worth trying, decanting for at least 3 hours (even longer if you plan ahead) and enjoying.

While this wine can still be found at a few of the local stores, I wanted to revisit it to see if I should pick up a couple more bottles. Its been about 16 months since we last opened a couple bottles. The first bottle was great but a month later we were disappointed in the second one obtained from another source. This was another grey market bottle with the green tax stamp on the capsule. Popped and poured, this was initially pretty tight, with some spice, mineral and some red fruit aromas. On the palate, some more spice, pepper and black cherry fruit. Light middleweight in body. Over a couple hours, the wine fleshed out some, and added leather, roasted chesnut, a little bit of meat and some nice rhone funk along with the spice, minerality, and some darker fruits. The wine became a little silkier in texture. I didn't think it was very tannic at all and I loved the elegance that the wine showed. While it is not as good in my book as the 2004, this bottle showed really well. On a weeknight, Ann and I rarely finish a full bottle, but we killed this one and I would have happily drank another glass or two. I'm going to pick up a couple more.

decanted for three hours, deep scents of meat, herbs and wild strawberries, which carries through to the flavors, vivid, silky textured, really nice strawberry smoothie, earth and other natural red fruit on the palate, deliciously balanced, smooth tannins, solid structure for aging, great for the price range, distinctive, brought out sweet gaminess when paired with rosemary lamb rack, amazing match, sleeper vintage for Southern Rhone, shhh

Followed a '99 and accompanied beef tenderloin. Decanted for about 4 hours and could have used all day. Quite closed upon opening, this is a big and complex wine with a long life ahead of it. It's just going to get better with time, and it's damned good now, given air-time.

I first started purchasing Pegau years ago as I grew enthusiastic for the region. This domaine obviously stands out as one of the grand exemplar, yet owing perhaps to a hording miser's disposition, I've just never found the occasion to uncork a bottle. After a day digging out and pouring in the winter-garden raised bed, nail and elbow deep in dirt, chicken-shit, and vermiculture compost, tonight I found an excuse. Brief 40-min decant @60F more to mix the contents than seriously aerate. This wine's medium dark red complexion is homogeneous throughout, clearing only a cm off the edges. The bouquet lacks intensity at this stage but shows a classic combination of cherry fruit, Provencal herbs, garringue, and dusty pepper on dirty field game. I can forgive the somewhat thin palate, as it makes up for a lack of concentration with fruit and flavor complexity and sheer balance. Sappy, shrubby, and vinous in acid, taste and feel; cherry and raspberry fruit add sweetness; absolutely no burn of alcohol. Dusty dirt and pepper abide within the later half. There's a funk that shows at times which reminds me of raw, game-ish turkey skin. This "funk" is especially apparent on the generally medium length, sometimes long, sometimes clipped finish. Overall, this isn't a life changing wine. It needs more saltiness, concentration, and length I think. No doubt, this expresses a unique terroir, and the excellent balance displayed here will someday yield an outstanding, classic wine. In line with expectations based on the respected opinions of others. I'll age these for another several years and keep an eye out for more as prices continue to fall almost commensurate with the economy on this vintage of Pegau.

Quite ripe, pure strawberry cream and garrigue. Not insignificant heat. Were it not so ripe / sweet / hot it would be straight up excellent. As it is, quite acceptable but not to my liking.

Nose of French oak, bramble, and dried herbs with an underlying minerality. Similar palate complemented by focused blackberry, bright cherry and anise flavors. Finish is a bit tight with some oak and moderate tannins. This should really shine in a few years when the finish opens up more.

What a nice wine. It is shy on the nose only showing some herbal scents. The palate expands on the herbs to show earthiness, meaty and fruity flavors. Clean, complex and precise. This is so refreshing after the 07 CSJ CDP.

What a great bottle from Pegau's 2006 vintage. This is Pegau in its soft, approachable style, with loads of licorice and tobacco on the nose, wild raspberry flavors and aromas and something sauvage in the background. Drinkable (very drinkable) now but sure to evolve for a decade in fascinating ways. The score doesn't really do it justice because somehow scores can miss the basic hedonistic pleasure factor.

Medium ruby, bright and transparent. Youthfull nose with cherries and strawberries in alcohol on a background of minerals, graphite and violet. Fresh and well delinated. Medium body with fine acidity and fruit, lots of ripe tannins which are soft and supple leaving a clean and long aftertaste. On both nose and mouth typical Grenache based blend from Chateauneuf. A wine that will age very well.

infanticide has its place. Dark garnet in the glass, garrigue, spices and pepper on the nose. elegant on the palate and much lighter than I had expected. Medium acid and tannin levels. alcohol levels were noticeable. Good now. better in 4-5 years. (Triplr decanted, 3 hours of air)

A solid Chateauneuf du Pape but a little disappointing for Pegau (and also not as good as another bottle of this same vintage that I tasted at the domaine about four months ago, which I had pegged in the 92-93 range). Solid core of fruit, but lacking the richness as well as the garrigue character I typically find in Pegau, and a bit bitter on the finish. Should "last" and may be a little more drinkable in 2-3 years, but not something that will likely develop in any meaningful way with bottle age.

Fight Night Wines (Washington, D.C.): i absolutely loved this wine. i know it's young, but i was impressed by how well this was showing. dark purple colored. the nose explodes with smoke, cured meat, olives, black pepper and dark cherries. just intoxicating. i could smell this wine forever. the structure is impeccable. dense tannins, full-bodied, and a rush of flavors. i get tons of bacon fat, smoke, coffee, blackberry jam, all the wonderful flavors of a great sunday breakfast. the finish is long and sexy. great stuff that will surely only get better.

I'm having mixed feelings about this one. On the other hand the wine was nicely expressive, wild and complex. On the other hand, I think, it was somewhat out of balance and/or not yet integrated. Time will tell how much better it will become. It is certainly asking for 10+ years in the cellar.
Popped and poured. Medium garnet. Scents of barnyard, smoke, red forest fruits and some animal notes. Medium bodied with well integrated tannins and flavors of berries, meat, spices and oak. Great CdP! Very approachable from now, but with further ageing it will gain in complexity
For me, this didn't really live up to my expectations and past experiences that I've had with Pégaü. While it was still a very good wine, I think I was just expecting to be blown away and I wasn't. Professional scores for this wine are all in the 92-94 range and I feel that's a bit of a stretch. The main flaw I found was that the alcohol was a touch out of balance and certainly made the wine very hot on the finish. Everything else was quite nice so perhaps it just needs some time to come together. I've got another bottle that I will check in on in the near future and reserve scoring until I can give it another chance. As it is right now, I'd put it in the 87-90 range.
Popped and poured and decanted the remainder of the bottle. I am hoping this was an off bottle although I did not detect any TCA, Brett, etc. Compared to the bottle of this we had a couple of weeks ago, this was missing the meaty/bloody notes as well as density and depth. It was almost as if the syrah/mourvedre was left out of the blend on this one. This was spicy, a little hot, and thin. The tannins never showed up as the wine opened like our previous bottle. We both preferred the last bottle over this one. Another thing - this bottle arrived with no back label but it had the green tax stamp on the top of the capsule - from the gray market.

Popped and poured. Put the rest in a decanter. Initially this was very tight with lots of blood, meat and mineral on the nose. I was worried Ann wasn't going to like it. As it opened over the course of an hour and a half, this faded and the loads of sweet fig and black cherry fruit really started to show. This showed some black pepper and spice and faint leather. No noticable funk or barnyard. The very fine tannins also started to show up the more this opened. As we killed the bottle it was really singing. Gotta get more. Hopefully we'll be able to keep our hands of 'em.

Medium red. Like most of the 2006's I've tasted, the wine looks almost like Pinot Noir and can appear thin. But not on the palate. Lots of barnyard before yielding to a nose of pecan pie, spice box, and cinnamon. Meaty and spicy at the same time. Soft on the palate and very juicy. Yum.

San Antonio Wine Geeks (Turquoise): Initially served single blind, opened but not decanted the night prior. Aromatic spicy nose with meat with a strong iron/blood note. Coarse tannic backbone with good acidity. Palate showed ripe plum with red fruit highlights with herbal spices coming out with time and leading into a lengthy finish of rock and herbs. Hints of barnyard in the nose. Quintessential Pegau, approachable with a decant now, but not showing it's full potential just yet. More spicy with more subtle fruit than my tasting last year.

Semi-opaque ruby color in the glass. Nose of leather, earth, some blood and dark red fruit. A solid structure that I would imagine will further integrate with its fruit and savory flavors in time. Still a very nice drink now, but I'm waiting (perhaps inappropriately?) for it to develop the texture, richness and intensity that I saw in the 2000. Wasn't expecting to see this opened so young, but who am I to turn it down?

Surprisingly open after popping & pouring. Very new world on day one with relatively jammy fruit for a CdP and sweet oak. More like what I had expected on day two, tight with tannins, leather, and garrigue appearing. A young CdP with an easy decade or two of life in it. This might become a good value as its 2007 sibling gets all the attention.

I know that I drank this far too early, but it was hard to resist. The nose is truly exotic. Lots of smoked meats, espresso, baked tomato, black pepper, and rich custard. The color is a deep deep purple - basically black. The mouthfeel of this is really nice - smooth from beginning to end. The flavors are rich and complex with dark dark cherry, and smoked herbs being the dominant flavors. There's also a sweet coffee flavor, similiar to Bryers coffee ice cream flavor add to that a very pronoucned olive tapanade flavor. It's amazing how well this is tasting right now, and just makes me excited for where this will go over the next 10-20 years. Could turn out to be a superstar!

Slow o’d for 20 hrs or so. The first whiff indicated we had a brett free Pegau on our hands, as subtle but of so beautiful aromas of plum and spices escaped from the bottle. My experience last night will echo the majority of notes already written on this wine: this is a subtle, classic, easy going vintage for Pegau, but in no shape or form did I find it thin or lacking in any capacity. The feminine counterpart to the muscular 04 version if you will. The classic, grenache red strawberry fruit was matched blow for blow with equal parts of garrigue and underbrush with a delivery that is comprised of both poise and confidence. I also agree that this won’t translate into old bones by the domains standard, but certainly should fully blossom in the next 5 years or so.

The nose had cherry, pepper, olives, and a big whiff of brett. The nose just paled in comparison to the 07 Beaucastel we were tasting this next to. The palate had dark bramble fruit, with a roasted note, and the brett coming through in a big way on the palate as well. This was also a Garagiste bottle with no back label - for what that's worth. I was not a big fan of this as I enjoyed the Beaucastel and Saxum that we tasted next to this much, much more. I did like tasting this wine while eating Key Lime Pie. I know that sounds like a strange pairing, but it did work. Dan Kravitz had mentioned that oddball pairing on an eBob thread, so we saved some of this bottle to try with the Key Lime Pie. I liked it better with the dessert than I did with our meal, or even on it's own prior to that.

Not my favorite Pegau, but still very nice, needs time, a bit disjointed, I'd guess in 3-4 years this will come around really nicely. Typical pegau style, just a bit less exciting than other vintages, will have to try another bottle in 6 months

Very expressive nose - savory meat, iodine, pepper, curry spice, bit of band aid. Very salty palate with good but not overpowering concentration. Long finish. This wine may prove that CDP is just not my thing - this doesn't excite me. For fans of the style, however, this is probably 92+; personally, this is more interesting than enjoyable, 90-91ish. Could see liking it quite a bit more with lots of age on it, though.

Lovely clean nose of thyme, laurels, freshly cut green paprika, ground white pepper, some roses and plums. A vintage of Pegau which is more flowery and fruity and less meaty and animal in its bouguet. The attack is sweet and appealing, mid palate very well in balance with a zesty refreshing and extremely well integrated acidity. Long finish, this wine begs t o be drunk and avery sip leads to another one...

Drank over 5 hours, best after an hour. Pepper, lavender, green spice, leather and smoke on nose. Very spicy front palate, almost hot. Followed by pepper, currants, red raspberries and grilled meat. {ST} Decanted about 1.5 hours.Garnet color with dark hues, medium-full body. Enticing nose of raspberries, leather, funk, lavender, bacon fat, and pepper. Medium depth flavors of sweet raspberries, cherries, garrigue, and leather. Medium acid and medium level tannins that are polished and make this very approachable now. Finish of raspberries, earth and spice on nice wave of minerals. Doesn't seem to be a long-lived Pegau, but certainly delicious and shows class and complexity. Good value relative to '05.

Modern and crafted and lacking in soul compared to other CDPs, but really tasty after two hours of decanting. I'm sure this will have a fairly long life ahead of it, but I can't see it becoming profound at any point. Drank with Lamb chops and roasted potatoes, great match.

2006 Southern Rhone horizontal tasting - CDP (Crystal Wines): Alcohol :14% Tasted Blind. The lowest alcohol level in the line up. Quite focus and complex nose of pepper, Indian spice with floral, raspberry undertones. The palate is still pretty reserve with round and silky texture that is good structure with long mineral finishing with bitterness. The acidity only able to surface later. The underlying material is promising. Need time. Buy - Yes.

Feraud-Brunel and Pegau (Arlequin Wines, San Francisco): Medium color with a light rim. Whoa, after the delicate, squeaky clean wine from Feraud-Brunel, the animal funk on the nose came as an olfactory shock. A completely different sytle-thicker, weightier, more concentrated and more alcohol (without any heat). Darker fruit, wonderful complexity with tar and tobacco, powerful, but the wine could use more acidity for some lift. As is, delicious but somewhat dull in the mouth.

Nez complexe mais discret, de viande, de cuir, avec fruit noir et encens.
Vin dense, concentré, long.

Even after being open (but refer'ed) since Friday, this is still a full bodied wine. Lots of kirsch, deep rich scortched earth aromas and loads of substance. Of course the tannin has mellowed over two days, but still a wonderful wine to enjoy. I am so glad to have these--but will leave them in the cellar for 3-5 years. Should be a point or so of improvement as the wine matures.

Trip to the Southern Rhone; 6/11/2009-6/12/2009 (Avignon, Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and the Dentelles du Montmirail): Gorgeous nose. Very rich and expressive, with plums, redcurrants, earth and a little meat. Lovely aromatics on this wine. Again, red currants on the palate, some deeper cassis fruit and a step-up in minerality towards to mid-palate. This had all the friendliness of 2006, but the structure was finer than many other CdPs of the vintage, with firm but fine tannins and superb acidity. I thought there was just a tiny dip into hollowness at the end of the palate just before the finish stepped in. Still, a small mar in an otherwise polished and complete wine. The finish itself was lovely, with a little coat of tannins, a hint of thyme and then a gorgeous pull of mineral. Like its maker, this wine was understated, unpretentious but full of class.

Medium body, fresh acidity, and suculent aromas of earth, leather, and matured fruit. Tannins are almost not present at this stage. With any doubt lighter than 2005, but pleasant anyway.

Great young bottle. Leather, spice on the nose, clean entry, great fruit, great length. Tannins not overpowering. Really nicely balanced, a pleasure to drink from first to last.

For a young CDP this wine drinks very well now. Probably it lacks the stuffing to last 40 years but so do I, so I won't hold it against the wine. It shows some tannin but softly. and it presents nice cranberry, raspberry, vanilla, brioche, spicy flavors on the palate. Very nice.

VVW Wine Bar tasting. Nose of plums and spice was overshadowed by more than a little brett. Complex palate, full, sweet, round and well balanced by fine tannins at this age. Decent acidity and a long finish. Had a hard time getting past the brett.

Immediately after opening there is a vibrant aroma of leather and dark fruits. After breathing for a bit there is raspberry, pepper, and cherry. More of a red fruit profile but there's also some blackberry. The palate is medium to full body with moderate tannin. Lots of sweet fruit and nice acidity. Really well balanced. Good length on the finish with red fruits and tingly pepper. So good now but this should be even better in 5 to 10 years.

Medium ruby, translucent. Lavender and menthol on the nose. Similarly, medium weight and all garrigue in the mouth, although some candied tones suggest more fruit to come. Sound acidity, lowish tannin, although the latter sneaks up on you with subsequent tastes. As with my first taste of this wine, I liked the elegance and savory complexity here. Relatively accessible early.

Medium tone and depth of color. Fairly spicy at first with licorice and lavender adding to restrained aromatic complexity. Remarkably smooth, open, and supple. Lighter weight for Pegau, but it has a strong core of black licorice on the finish. Mild sweetness of clean fruit with acidity that becomes more prominent as the wine gets air. This is clearly more about the savory elements than overt fruit. A rather elegant and very approachable Pegau that seems constituted for short to medium term drinking.

Pegau Reserve Vertical Tasting: Medium red color with a bluish hue. Closed nose with blueberry and licorice. Similarly closed taste, where raspberry fruit starts of, and is followed by some licorice and spice on the midpalate. Good length and the juicy fruit stay all the way to the finish. The tannins are harsh and leaves the mouth dried out. Got potential for several years of cellaring.

Very nice nose of horse, leather, bacon and oriental spices... in the mounth, very long and pure ripe strawberries fruit with silky tannins... this wine was the perfect match with the scalops and truffles... a great pégau, close to the style and quality of the magic 2001

Trip to France; 10/13/2008-10/24/2008 (Burgundy, Rhone Valley (Chateauneuf-du-Pape), Paris): Aromatic musty nose of black cherries, leather, and earth. Palate with some acidity, and gritty tannins, but rather open for a younger wine, and full of dense red fruit flavors. Long finish of mostly earth, flint, and tar. Very balanced and approachable now, plenty of rustic flavors.

Pegau Vertical (Morton's Steakhouse, Washington DC): rimal but elegant. It held a nice balance of youthful exuberance but pedigree and direction. This is a wine that drinks well young and should continue to for several years. A brighter expression of fruit without secondary nuances. If this is how you like your CDP, I suggest drinking these on the younger side.

Tasted from cask with Paul Féraud at the domain: Grenache cask : Nose of pure cherries, loads of red fruit in the mount and a little bit of white peper and spices, totally integrated tannins almost imperceptible. Very good and refreshing acidity combined with sweetness of the bonbons "Haribo" Syrah cask: Black as ink, loads of very sweet and silky tannins and loads of spices in the mounth. (94-95/100)

Domaine du Pegau Tasting at Wild Ginger with Laurence Féraud (Seattle, WA): Foudre sample. A very brambly nose, showing a little stem and a slightly leesy character, as this has just finished malolactic fermentation. The Grenache stood out quite clearly on the nose but not much else. Mmm, the palate is primary, again with some nice bramble and rather tart, noticeable acidity. While interesting to try, I can’t hazard a score, as I lack the experience to evaluate a wine at this early stage.

Mid-palate notes of leather, earth, grilled meat, dried herbs, mushrooms, and olive tapenade.

The nose offers classic CNDP hallmarks - an old cellar, dark berries but they are subtle.
The palate offers the same - great acidity. This was paired with eggs, cream, morel mushrooms, pepper, garlic scapes, and cheese. Salt and Pepper.
This is Classic CNDP!!!
Everything here is in order. Minimal Tannins.

Drinking very nicely at the moment. Slightly faded color. Good acid, moderate tannins. Showing some savory and sweet notes. Balanced and mature. Might benefit from an hour or two in the decanter. This is mature with a few years left.

Really excellent and fully mature now with complex berry flavors, integrated tannins and great length. We had two bottles in Norway with fish and were superb matches for the flavors in the dishes.

14% abv.

Popped and poured. Deep garnet core, pink rim. An absolutely stunning bottle – blackcurrant syrup, kirsch, mocha, liquorish, exotic spices, cedar-wood and faint hints of barnyard on the nose and palate. Rich, concentrated and sweet, but perfectly balanced by a solid structural backbone. Surprisingly fruity and not really showing off a whole lot of the (in)famous Pégaü funk, but has more than enough complexity to make it interesting. A very rare case of a superior bottle opened at exactly the right time – lucky me!

For me this vintage has just a little bit too much funk (I clearly prefer the outstanding 2010). On the palate medium bodied with good aromatic complexity. Could be cleaner on the fruit though.

Recently purchased at retail for $82US, this wine is drinking so well right now It paired perfectly with my entrees shared with an Oregon wine maker who was in town for a tasting.

Wow, a very silky and fresh Pegau -- none of the funky brett or reduction usually in Pegau. Inky dark, fresh palate of dark fruit, a touch of maple/soy, nice.

A few Veleta wines with Nola and Juan Palomar (Emilio's Tapas Sol y Nieve, Chicago, IL): Nose: This is open and everything you'd want from a pegau from the outset with tones of funk, black fruits, licorice, garrigue, mesquite, spice tones, and black cherries. There is very good depth on this with style as well.

I do not see this going thru the decade (unlike 01, 04, 05, 07) rather I will continue to drink thru mine over the next 36 months. An expensive wine for such a near term drinker---but fully enjoyable so no regrets.

This does not seem to be as good a wine, but is still fine. Very classic rustic south rhone, foursquare. What I thought was odd about it was how young it appeared, still with some hard tannic edges. May be a long stayer. Good structure. I will leave it for a year or two before trying again.
