Opened 2 hours earlier. Beautiful deep ruby core without much lightening. Deflating green, resiny aromas. Medium weight, black cherry/blackberry fruit, excellent acidity, but the wine is defined by astringent wood tannins. It appears to have good underlying material, but I always have a strong negative visceral reaction when Volnay is vinified in this manner, which renders it neither delicate nor delicious. If I wanted this much pine, I would have opened a bottle of La Rioja Alta.
To be fair, by the second night, the wood had receded and the sappy dark red fruit had taken a step forward so that the balance between the two was better. It was still a big, bold wine, which for me is weird for Volnay.
Off-putting burnt nose , sweet tasting Pinot , the nose needs to blow off . Had 2 glasses over 3 hours , wine improved , nose only slightly . 2 days later this wine continued to taste sweeter , the nose didn’t get worse but stayed where it was that was , the flaw .

Full ruby. Moderate char right out of the bottle, then ripe black cherry and soil. As I noted 8 years ago, big boned for Volnay, but not clumsy. Succulent, fluid, excellent thread of soil, melting tannins. Gratifying result from this inconsistent producer, and shockingly supple and ready compared to other 2005's I've experimented with recently. Hardly the most detailed Volnay, but an excellent Burgundy nonetheless.

A 2005 that is starting to open. The wine shows show some colour development but its core its quite deep. Expressive and typical of its origins with lifted red fruit, beautiful aromatics and some sous-bois. Red cherries in the mouth with a nice mineral cut. Mid-weight and quite long with good structure. Potel can be a bit uneven but this is very good.

Red and black cherry, floral and earth aroma. On the palate it is highly structured, though elegant and reserved rather than robust and dense. The fruit is in the background, not at all obvious with a mineral character to it. The wine is built more on the delicate tannins and acid than obvious fruit, finishes long and pure. Lovely complexity and balance, though no bruiser. Opened up over three days showing more power and class.

Couldn't resist trying. Good medium ruby core with gentle fading at edge. Highly perfumed combination of raspberry, sour cherry, and a dollop of licorice. Big for a Volnay, which means medium body, some smoke, spice, and earth at the end in addition to ripe but finely rendered fruit. Light underpinning of wood. Excellent acidity, not terribly tannic. This was truly excellent, with wonderful balance that made it inviting even at this early juncture. I look forward to following it over the years.

Early Look at Mid-Priced 2005 Burgundy: Tasted blind along with other 2005s. Modest nose was slightly floral with red and black cherry. Palate also came across as the more subdued in the flight, only showing interesting character on the well structured finish that had some spice peaking through. Wait and see. I'm told this opened up considerably the next day.

LdC Mid-range 05 Red Burg survey (Gregg's): Group #4, My #4 - Full bright red/pink color. Full nose of black cherry fruit with a coffee hint - bright and acidic. Nice red acidic fruit, but perhaps a bit hollow on the mid-palate. Long structured finish. 90-91 pts.

Very very smooth. Nose somewhat muted but still had some lively fruit notes. Finish was a bit short but enjoyable

Good stuff. Tasted great straight from opening. Wild raspberry and nicely balanced acidity. Classic Potel from a great vintage.

Nice, classic Burgundy, but not that special for the price.
