Winespecials Wine Evening (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Gabriel Universal Popped and poured. Clear, medium golden color with an amber hue. Clean, ripe, developing nose, some buttery notes, botrytis. Hmm, had this better and more expressive before. On the palate you can feel Keller’s signature of Hubacker, but this bottle showed more than all bottles I had before the complicated vintage. Or it might be a not optimal bottle. As always a wonderful salty mineral core, depth and tension. Hubacker typical a bit broader and muscular. But also very ripe, buttery and driven by botrytis flavors. Good length. This particular bottle was at its full peak or slightly past peak. 90-91

Not blind Small vertical of Hubacker. 2010, 06, 09, 16. Second bottle, From the Colour much brighter than expected. Keller Hubacker vertical tasting 2006-2017 plus X (@Private location): Glass: Gabriel Gold Popped and poured. Clear, golden yellow color. Clean, beautiful nose with some undeniable botrytis notes, honey and ripe yellow fruit. On the palate lots of ripe, sweet fruit and botrytis flavors. Mixed with wonderful mineral notes. A bit oily texture, some bitter notes in the background. Very round and balanced. Great length. At its full peak. Will stay there for at least 5+ years. 92-93

Riesling Freaks lazy afternoon lunch (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): En magnum. Expressive nose displaying rich ripe yellow fruit, lemon curd, baked apple, burnt sugar, caramel, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, deeply toned rich yellow fruit, dense and oily, bright acidity, good limestone mineral and a long dense yellow fruit driven finish with burnt sugar and sweet spices at the end. It has a bit of fizz. This is a really rich and dense wine. Kinda heavy weight and serious.

Wonderful dry Riesling, full bodied, well balanced acid/fruit play. I kept a third of the bottle, corked, in a regular fridge for a week. Surprisingly the wine was well alive and, actually it had developed further. It showed a slight botrytis note. No sign of oxidation. No hurry.

This wine is getting better with age. I have one more bottle and I'll try and hang onto it. A big full GG. Bracing without being biting. Lovely broad flavors of grapefruit, lemon but with a minerality and a deep flavor profile. It is amazing what these dry Rieslings can attain.

golden colour. From my personal cellar this bottle was much better than previous ones. Much more intensity and aromas of passionfruit, mango, minerals, oranges, chalk, wetstones, metal and honey. This wine has a fascinating peak now, but it should hold for a decade in a cool cellar.

In Klaus-Peter Keller's spread of Grosse Gewächse, the Dalsheimer Hubacker is always on the more elegant side of the spectrum. His 2006 reflects this truthfully, but it is also clearly not one of the stronger vintages. It is fully mature but with vibrant acidity and slightly chewy bitters, on the lighter side even for Hubacker, without either the baroque opulence of the 2005 or the energetic drive and balance of the 2007. There are aromas of flowers and minerals, a hint of honey and good ripe fruit, but the finish is just a tad light and short. Good wine, drink now - 2021.
Medium yellow. Herbal scents. Medium weight, completely dry, intense rising stone, acidity not that high, a bit of lime, but this is about everything but the fruit.

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2006 (Villa Behr (Wendlingen, Germany)): Double decanted about 1 hour before. Clear, quite youthful pale golden-citrus color. Medium+ intense, developing nose with lots of chalk, fine ripe pear and apple. Dry, with good, well integrated acidity. From all Keller wines in this tasting the Hubacker was the most muscular, opulent wine, but not in the sense of the Bassermann-Jordan. Lots of pressure on the palate, chalk, fine yellow fruit. Long finish, still has potential for further development.

Mid golden colour. Discreet nose of stones, minerals and only hints of citrus fruits, adding a bit of peach with time. On the palate lacking power is the first impression, but with time it puts on a bit of weight. With out a doubt a wine with good body, long lasting finish and enough power to have fun.

Keller Hubacker Großes Gewächs 2005-2013 (Vinothek, Villa Behr (Wendlingen, Germany)): *** Please see this note only in the context of the whole vertical tasting *** Glass: Schott Zwiesel red wine Clear, medium lemon-golden color with a clean, medium- intense, developing nose. This is quite the opposite of the voluminous 2005. It is very elegant, lean, bone dry with a long finish. It may lack a bit of power on the mid palate, but that’s complaining about first world problems. For some tasters the wine of the evening, but I preferred the 2008 a bit more. A difficult vintage, heavy rain in early October necessitated draconic selection at harvest, resulting in the lowest yield of the decade for Keller's Hubacker. Medium-intense colour; initial waxy nose opens up to a classic, ripe Riesling profile with good depth, slightly subdued but bright fruit, wonderful freshness and chalky minerality; the palate displays a slightly chewy character, medium weight, intensity and drive, a linear style with marked acidity; slightly blunt finish, cream and lemons. An excellent 2006, just lacks a little finesse. But it should have another five years in it.

Dry German Riesling (German Wine Society - Washington, DC): Beautifully aromatic: white flowers, pear blossom, slate, intense minerals, salt and lime. Bracing and intense on the palate, with loads of acid and minerals, but the nutty, orange peel, clove and slate flavors give it enough body and richness to make it balanced. Lanolin and slate linger long on the finish. I'm not a huge fan of Großes Gewächs wines, but this is superb. Even though I like to drink GG wines young, this could last for a very long time.

Beautiful colour - starting to turn golden. Fantastic nose with grapefruit peel, iron, caprifolia blossoms, yellow mirabelle, salty minerals. In the mouth this is long, balanced and bone-dry now, razor-fine acidity that just cuts perfectly through the rich fruit and leaves the palate cleansed. No petrol yet. Fragrant, crystalline and pure, stellar fruit, spicy depth, hint of sweetness, relatively open, a bit waxy; light for a Keller GG but very elegant with lovely acidity, successfully avoids the structural weakness that mars so many (even top) 2006's. Good length, excellent wine, not sure about drinking window. Now - 2026?

Bit of medium hay color, nose is the slightest touch of petrol, with light honeysuckle; this has plenty of intensity, good initial acidity, though both fade just a little more rapidly than they should for a wine at this level; hints of minerality on the finish. Overall very nice, a notch shy of outstanding.
3 nights later: finishing the remains of the bottle from the fridge. Wow, this is still just as good, even better than the first night. Beautiful wine, give it some air time.

Enjoyed over several days. Start out very fresh, mineral with some fruityness with emphasis on the lemon component. Then put on more weight, more fatness and oppulence (for a Riesling) becoming more like a mineral Chardonnay from Burgundy. I did not detect the botristys element wich other tasters mention. Great stuff

Double-decanted 24 hours before drinking. No real tasting notes taken but I remember it as quite a disappointment. The taste has a good amount of botrytis coming through and there is a clear lack of acidity to balance out the sweet orange-rind fruit. Ends short with a grape fruit like finish but again without enough acidity.

Many notes on this seems to emphasize its opulence and exotic fruit. To me it appeared quite different: light yellow, very pure nose, mainly with notes of minerals and licorice. Very focused and very elegant in mouth with more minerals and licorice wrapped in cool and light white-yellow fruit. Long. To me it was very good, but properly closed as the fruit was so absent. However the IWC note seems to agree with me: white peach and salty minerality. No matter, great potential there.

Weingut Keller Tasting (Dee Vine Wines, SF, CA): From magnum. Beautifully aromatic wine. A real chameleon, with a kaleidoscopic range of scents. Seems more massive in every way than the '06 Westhofen Kirchspiel GG, with higher sweetness, alcohol and acidity, but perhaps this bottle is just more open. For all the concentration here the wine feels relatively lightweight on the palate. Pretty remarkable. Made from grapes of Spatlese ripeness.

Lychee, honey and a hint of alcohol on the big nose. Rather sweet and alcoholic on the palate, but with penetrating acidity and an under core of minerals. Long aftertaste. Somewhat four square right now, a monster of a wine in need of some bottle age and integration of the impressive separate components.

My first words were: “WOW, this is a BIG one!”. Very opulent, broad-shouldered Riesling. A different kind of animal than the Westhofen Kirchspiel but just as inviting, nevertheless. I’m pretty sure more time in the decanter would have made a remarkable difference for the performance but it seemed a little too clumsy and bold and edgy to be all the way up there where I was expecting it to big. This is a world-class Riesling never the same and if the Kirchspiel is a baby then this is an embryo. 93+ points

2 days later: Sweatier slate, floral, rich with almoust an off-dry note in the middle, bit warm on the finish. more closed and tough to judge than sunday. LONG ager. the main minus is the alc is perceptable (i am very sensitive)
5th day: last drops :( richer - into peach and mineral nose... slight note of RS on finish, more balanced now (WOW) ..complex, excellent acidity, has a great "auslese" feel without the sugar. excellent - obviously needs years to show since its a glass i have been nursing for 5 days. from 92 to 94!!

Riesling tasting (Sebastians appartment): Light straw yellow color. The nose is showing a lot of fat fruit, but underneath hints of petrol, minerals and mushrooms finds it way up. On the palate this is more restrained, giving almost only fruit and flowers. Nice acidity and long lenght ending in a very classical riesling-like petrol finish. It seems to be hiding alot at the moment, yet currently it only shows it concentration and great balance. Very elegant now, but I imagine more complexity will show up with some keeping.

Some citrus. Very fine mineral flavours and lovely lacy texture. Racy and very youthful. Wonderful freshness and length. The limestone is showing its energetic side. Superb wine especially on a hot day,but it will improve

9th Annual Blind Challenge (The Square, Mayfair, London): Mouthwatering sharp nose again. Riesling with a bit of age on it. Some spritz. Sharp. A German Trocken? When Simon says Keller, it falls into place. Super wine!

Keith's Blind Challenge 2012 (The Square, London): Blind. Slightly fuller in colour. Reasonably subtle dry Riesling nose. Quite weighty and rich with a dry and slightly spritzy finish. Plenty of extract. ? Austrian Riesling smaragd. ****

Slate, peach, lime, passion. Great minerality, nicely integrated acidity and almost sweet. Excellent.

Now - 2026?

Høyere syre enn 2005 Keller Kirchspiel GG, men ikke like smooth. Tror denne trenger lengre lagring.

This is quite a powerhouse; packed with grapefruit, apple and riper melon fruit with saline and slightly sweaty/funky accents. Lots of depth and power, but it's well balanced with bright acids and impressive length.

Great stuff

Powerful and fruity nose with overripe pineapple, lemon and minerality. Full-bodied and lengthy taste embodies fruitiness, minerality, strong acidity and a hint of residual sugar.

Double decanted 24 hours before drinking. Almost completely clear colour. Soaring nose of sweet, pure fruits. Still incredibly primary, almost grapey on the palate. Needed 48 hours more air!

93+ points

Rieslings and Farewell to the Dane (Manor): Rich, power first wine, pear and apple, big baby, pineapple, very mouthfilling, long balanced finish... delicious.
