Tasted for our 20th wedding anniversary on the wine’s 20th birthday over a 3 hour period - starts out nutty with little hint of fruit and a touch of must that eventually blows off evolving into citrus and honey flavor notes and beeswax bouquet. Quite viscous. Finish is dry.

Cork in great condition. Brilliant mid gold colour - perhaps a little darker than expected? Nose is tropical fruit with a little oxidative Elastoplast. Palate is a little faded in truth - some acidity but tending to more tertiary characteristics. Great finish but overall I feel this bottle has suffered premature oxidation. Still very nice but I was expecting more.

Seventh bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2010. Pristine. Not decanted, opened two hours in advance. Consistent with my previous notes. Very youthful white golden colour with green reflections; the nose is quite oaky initially, but it opens up beautifully to a completely classical Domaine de Chevalier bouquet of lemon curd, flowers, vegetal notes and savoury oak; the flavoursome, savoury palate is wonderfully fresh and youthful, sustained by juicy acidity and the tannic structure from the oak; the finish has very good resonance and length without any signs of tiring. This is comfortably on its plateau of maturity, with no end in sight. An incredible achievement in a heatwave vintage like 2003.

Sunday lunch with only Bordeaux (At an undisclosed restaurant with wine clients.): First wine of four this afternoon during lunch. This was our aperitif bottle, sadly slightly less good than the one enjoyed on 25-1-2020 because of some beginning oxidative notes. The bottle was pristine however, the cork was in top shape (see photo!). However it benefited from our small appetizers of Dutch herring; green gazpacho and langoustines.

The reds might be modern, but this white was stupendous, and delivered the "goods" for three days straight. To start, this wine was crisp, and tight, and just exuding liquid mineral perceptions and liquid stones. I hate to say it is rich, but it is, just not in a sweet or too ripe way, it's just rich with mineral, and earth, and white fruit, and flowers, and hints of coriander and fennel seeds. On the third day, I get a hint of furry melon vine and honeydew rind. The approach is dry, but it yields, and envelops the mouth, and begs to be sipped again and again. This, surely, is one of the best whites I have drunk this year!

During a Pessac-Leognan themed dinner. I was apprehensive when I saw this and expected something flabby or oxidative due to the 2003 vintage. Not at all, this was very fresh, some bee wax, lemon curd and a distinct oyster shell touch at the finish. Like a great white Burg in a good way. The Sauignon/Semillon blend here really did magic to deliver a balanced package.

I was really surprised how mineral and fresh it was for 2003 vintage, the nose was quite complex, with lightly roasted nuts, spices, mint, herbs, on the palate, showed citrus fruits but not ripe or dense, pretty fresh and balanced with gentle acidity and minerality. I was impressed (mainly due to the tougher vintage).

Grass, citrus, and sherry on the nose. A deep straw color. On the palate, this shows nondescript bright fruit (muddled pineapple?), sherry, slate, and very mellow grapefruit. The oak gives it some texture. It's a somewhat complex wine that doesn't taste as ripe or hot as you'd expect an '03. Good wine. Enjoy. (And as for that note of Parker's saying that it has no acidity and should be drunk soon - I suggest you ignore old Bob.)

Medium golden color. Exotic notes of grapfruit, grassy notes too, lemon curd, but also some honey and white flowers. It's pretty full-bodied and dense, with surprising medium- acidity for the vintage and good overall balance. Good length. We were all pretty surprised when it was revealed that this was 2003.

Blind Tasting While Watching the Cubs Win NLDS Game 1 (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Tasted double blind. Came across with grapefruit and grass, so I immediately thought Sauv Blanc, but also showing a lush richness, so I thought it from a ripe vintage, approx 10 yo. It seemed more Bordeaux vs Loire and nicely balanced, so got everything correct here, including producer, but thought it 2005 instead of 2003. Best white wine of the evening.

Nose was wet wood and peanut husks and cut grass. On the palate a slightly bitter hazelnut note permeates the citrus oil fruit. Improved as it opened up. I believe this wine is in decline.

A private tasting and dinner (at home): Incredibly fresh and youthful, particularly for a hot vintage like 2003, flowers, minerals, lemons, quite oaky straight from the bottle but less so after decanting, has lost the spectacular richness of its youth, but the balance is impeccable and it looks like this may continue to develop for a very long time. May again add another point when it is mature.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 9/18/2015-9/19/2015: A very waxy nose, with some ripe citrus and some grassy aromas. The palate is quite waxy as well, but comes off quite hot and astringent. There does seem to be a goodly amount of acidity coupled to a very thick texture, but there's also a lot of oak here that is just so distracting on the backend. This is slightly sweet as well on the palate, likely owing to the ripeness. I'm a bit taken aback at how poorly all the elements are integrated here.

Revisited after four years. Good colour intensity, a lively and fresh-faced 12 year old; complex and harmonious nose, deep and mineral, ripe and creamy citrus, hint of tropical fruit, herbal freshness, subtle spicy vanilla from the well-integrated oak; creamy and rounded palate, juicy, good intensity, does not lack freshness in spite of the hot vintage, noticeable bitters; only 13% ABV but slightly hot on the finish, very good length with just a hint of straw at the very end. Nice and mature by now but not as exciting as in 2011. Has settled down and will last another 5 - 10 years.

Lemon, lime, vanilla, stone and spearmint aromas created the delightful perfume. The wine is fat, round, soft and lush and could use a bit more freshness in the open, expressive, lemon wax finish.

pale yellow, like many new world SB's on release;nose of crisp green apple, ginger, lime; more lime and citrus notes on the palate to begin, getting a hint of custard, brulee, later. Also tropical fruit flavors ginger, tart mango, very good acidity( sorry Winedoctor) and balance; aging very slowly, just a hint of softness and increased richness in the tropical fruits since my last tasting 12-2013. Probably wont' pop another for 5 yrs

Domaine de Chevalier Tasting (Chez Bouffard): This was strong right out of the gate - brought this down to about 55 and pulled the cork. Since I speak Left Bank Red fluently and kind of muddle may way through the rest, I'm not sure I have so much to add here. But my impression was that the Semillon was the main driver of the wine, its waxy, lanolin, apricot notes rather dominant. This was very good wine; I remember Olivier Bernard talking to Brook I think, saying that they use the pre-soaked oak with a light toast to give the whites structure rather than oak flavors. I can buy that, but there's still some oak here which I think is a function of this being a young wine.

Domaine de Chevalier Tasting with Adrien Bernard (Crystal Wines Valley Point): This was the WOTN for me. Tasted after the reds, this came across as powerful and vibrant so I can understand why we were advised to taste this last. Nose of thick honey and flowers (like a sauternes), powerful racy acidity dancing on the palate, with a fairly long defined finish. Can't believe WD scored this only 12.5/20 because this is really quite good stuff. If only the prices were lower...

Domaine de Chevalier tasting with Adrien Bernard (Crystal Wines): This was quite an eye opener for me given my relative inexperience with bordeaux whites. Lemon, honey and vanilla on the nose. Creamy, rich mouthfeel. Citrusy on palate with a streak of minerality. Finish went on for what seemed like a long while. I can imagine this would go really well with a richer seafood dish. Nice!

Primrose colour; oak almost fully absorbed, hint of vanillin & later salinity, then a vegetal tell-tale maturity; a softness leaning towards plush, this retains a fresh feel & touch of oak; subtle, spicy edge to a finish with decent length. What is so impressive is the balance achieved in this vintage. For drinking now but will probably age further, with ease. 91 points.

Opened by Lostverse. Not usually a fan of most white bordeaux but enjoyed this. Really liked the salty quality to it which reminded a little me of a Muscadet. A clean and pure texture. Notes of salty minerals, tarragon/lemon and vanilla bean. 89 points.

WOW. Exceptional. I think the best DdC I have had to date, and it is already my favourite bordeaux blanc. Depth and richness but still fresh and enjoyable. That mmm on the palate is uplifting and it has quite good length for a wine of it's age. Plenty of time still before it reaches it's best.

Another Saturday at Domaine (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: This took a little bit to get going, but there were balanced tones of lanolin, white peaches, some wet stones, custard, vanilla, and a bit of oak. There is nice depth to it and it has an expressive side as well.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. The palate isn't flabby and isn't blowsy from the vintage with balanced tones of lanolin, white peaches, vanilla, wet stones, some wax, and a touch of oak.
Overall: This started off being served too cold. As it warmed up, it revealed some real lovely and balanced tones. It's not a long haul wine, but is very enjoyable right now.

Like many 2003 Pessac Leognan wines, this is maturing at a rapid pace. With a nose of sweet lemons, lime, honey suckle and stone, the finish is filled with lush, polished citrus and orange sensations. Unlike many vintages of Domaine de Chevalier blanc, this is not a wine that is going to make old bones.

1/2 bottle Apples and flowery fruits. Buttery fat wine with an oily bitterness. Happy acids and very fresh. This wine displays an outspokenly musty quality that can't possibly be found attractive. The only interesting thing with this wine is the exceptionally low correspondance to the price-quality ratio. ****I don't get it. Why do people bother with these overly priced white Bordeaux wines? A lot of oak, but also good fruit, minerality and citrus acidity behind it. A lot of freshness and layers. Complex wine. I don't want to say anything about the plateau of maturity. It could well be that this is the perfect drinking moment, but there is also a possibility that this will be even more great and complex 10 years from now. 90+ at least.

Dreamtasting #2 (Restaurant de Watermolen, Kasterlee): Subdued, svelte and quite elegant bouquet. And also on the palate this wine seems to hold back. A powerhouse of a wine with tremendous weight, but also amazing energy and tension - immutable in the decanter over a four day period. Seems to have coped with the heat very well indeed. Custard, lemon, sweet, even exotic, fruit, well-judged spicy oak. Try again in 2-3 years. Should easily last for 20 - 25 years.

Originally opening with a very, very subtle grassy aroma, with 15-20 minutes in glass it really began to blossom and continuously evolve itself over the next hour. Stones, lychee, lanolin, honey-soaked bees wax and white blossoms. An excellent acidity, balanced and round. Very long finish. It just kept getting better. This wine will continue to show well for 5-10 years. Past that, I'm unsure. Superb now.

Les Blancs de Pessac-Léognan @ my place (Netherlands): Charming, compact, cool and great minerality. More upfront and open compared to older vintages, probably due to the vintage. But in the end typical for Chevalier. 17,5/20

Light gold colour. Very elegant nose, minerality, white blossoms, citric fruits. Very balanced in the mouth, round and mineral together but with good acidity despite the fact that it is from the hot 2003 vintage. This wine wins not with its aromas but with its finesse and elegance. No exotic fruits and easy things, understated and silky.

Bought and served in Bordeaux. Decanting one hour helped to begin the integration this huge, powerful white wine will accomplish on its own, if left undisturbed for another 5 years. Still offers up a fetching gold color, heavy texture, great beautiful of stone fruit and floral aromas, followed by full-bodied, rich, and still-unwieldy profile as the presence of oak was more strongly noticed, dissipating over time. But it is quite delicious, so we were unable to give it the 4 hour treatment I would have preferred, it simply left the building! Still very young, try again in 2013. Score potential to 95 over time. 60€ in Bordeaux.

nose: nice creamy nose of citrus, bits of oak, lemon/lime tones, bits of almonds, and some white peach tones. Nice depth with balanced aromatics
taste: really good fat feel with great creamed citrus tones, almonds, bits of lemon/lime tones, and slight hints of minerals
overall: a really great and well balanced bordeaux blanc. This note is from the second day as there was a good amount of oak on the first night. It's really smoothed out and has nice tart acidity that is starting to integrate well. This can definitely use a few more years, but isn't a long haul blanc

Nose was tight at the start...smelt like a textbook aussie sauvignon blanc with simple straightforward nose of fresh citrus and palate of fresh minerally lemons. BUT!! after 10 mins in the glass...ma ma MIA!...AMAZING! ...evolvement into sweet lychees, white flowers and some kerosene showing through. Heavy notes of lemon lychee...almost like a german riesling / alsace gurwurtztraminer blend. Delicious body...good mineral length on the finish. And when you thought that was it...BANG! ... the flavours hit you with a new evolvement of top grade butteriness ..reminiscent of a burgundian chardonnay. Amazing wine with absolute potential for ageing for 5 years or more.

When first opened--tight and a bitter oak element--it was very very cold and had been chilled too far down. As it warmed up the wine loosened up and the telltale citrus, grapefruit, touch of gunpowder emerged and it proved to be a nice wine.

Nice!

Agree with the earlier reviewer comparing this to a muscadet. Maybe it's time to drink up, but still a lovely wine with shellfish or as an aperitif.

91 points.

Apples and flowery fruits. Buttery fat wine with an oily bitterness. Happy acids and very fresh. This wine displays an outspokenly musty quality that can't possibly be found attractive. The only interesting thing with this wine is the exceptionally low correspondance to the price-quality ratio.

Superb now.

60€ in Bordeaux.

taste: really good fat feel with great creamed citrus tones, almonds, bits of lemon/lime tones, and slight hints of minerals
overall: a really great and well balanced bordeaux blanc. This note is from the second day as there was a good amount of oak on the first night. It's really smoothed out and has nice tart acidity that is starting to integrate well. This can definitely use a few more years, but isn't a long haul blanc

BUT!! after 10 mins in the glass...ma ma MIA!...AMAZING! ...evolvement into sweet lychees, white flowers and some kerosene showing through.
