Single glass. Tasted at Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, FL. Saffron, saffron, and more saffron. Then fruit of quince, apple and cider along with smoke, honey and fresh herbs. The palate has a slightly creamy texture and ok acidity. A good sauternes, nicely aged, but a below-average vintage for Yquem.

Gorgeous. Honeyed citrus nose showing an incredible steely, fresh, subtle salinity — reminiscent of early morning air by the sea. Plenty of dense saffron up front with dried peaches, and apricots. Nuttiness and silky rich sweetness on the palate, balanced by a light acid component. Really pretty.

Popped and poured. Dark amber with a yellow rim. Excellent nose with its best trait being impeccable balance. Walnut bouquet. Sweet caramel in the mouth. At 28 this is fantastic. Long, rich, mahogany finish. Really goes on forever. This is really special, and I bet it only gets better with a bit of air. Wow, at $60 purchase price this was a bargain. 4-13-18-9: 94/100.
This wine was very fresh and fruity with a touch of honeysuckle and a hint of sweet, mild honey. An undertone flavor reminiscent of fresh wildflowers was present. There were notes of tangerine and a bit of orange marmalade. An unmistakable hint of dried apricots and raisins were in the background. It was very smooth with no harshness. Although sweet and rich, the sweetness was fresh and not overpowering. Although a still wine, it reminded me more of a very rare and elite champagne. This is without a doubt one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted.

The first in a long vertical of d'Yquems paired across a dinner. I actually only had a small sip of this one, but the impression is it's exactly what d'Yquem should be. All sweet and complex and different and a nice bite of acid to it (although not as much as some others) and generally a very intense but also enjoyable experience.

The Papies 25th Anniversary Dinner & 1993 Vintage Horizontal (Hide, London): 2 bottles, very consistent, decanted for a good 3 hours. Special as always and very few ways one can end such a celebration that would trump with Yquem. The 1993 is different in the sense that is softer, less acidity, more marmalade in feel. Orange twist on the color, bright and glossy. Lovely balance, elegant as expected of its pedigree and so delicious. Liquid gold. 5 years ago when we had it last (for our 20th) we commented "vintages come and go but Yquem is Yquem" and once again we will leave it to that!

Tour of Palace Coburg wines & dinner @ Silvio Nickol; 6/18/2018-6/19/2018 (Palace Coburg in Vienna): There really aren't any comparables to D'Yquem. This isn't the best version I've had - it's perhaps missing a touch of acidity and a balance and an almost hint of sour in there - but it's still very good. Long finish. Apricot and honey and orange blossom. Could pair this with quite a few things, but went very nicely with the signature dish of foie gras and carrots (sounds a bit odd, but it was fabulous).

Weekend at Magog; 9/22/2017-9/25/2017 (Magog, Quebec): Medium amber color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour from 750ml. This was a good but not great d'Yquem as many have noted. Orange, overt spice, burnt caramel, apricot, wood. The palate is medium full body, has glycerin but not as round, toasted shaved coconut, honey, oodles of botrytis spice but to the extreme to an extent; moderate fruit, orange, spicy, candied apricot, medium finish that is not the typical elegance. 91+ to 92pts.

Not that I have a lot of experience with a d'Yquem (very little in fact) but I was told this was from a bad year. If they could make a wine of this quality from a bad year, what would one from a good year taste like? Elegant nectar from the gods with plenty of dried apricots, jackfruit, honey, starfruit, quince, stone fruits, stone minerals and hints of something aniseedy.

From a 375. Color is deep gold with only a very faint hint of orange, excellent for its age with a cork that has almost no penetration (~1mm); nose is full bodied, dense, full of baking spices, good underlying fruit, nose takes a bit of coaxing; palate is full bodied, rich and smooth, candied orange fruit with some orange peel, good freshness at first with solid minerality, lovely white fruit throughout but seems more of one or two notes, not the usual combination of multiple flavors and acidities traditional to Yquem; flavors of fruit and fresh minerals persist through finish where the fresh minerals take over, surprisingly medium-long finish. An interesting experience, since this is the first "off year" Yquem that I'm trying, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Overall the wine is much better than expected with good balance of richness and acidity, persistent flavors, and a surprisingly medium-long finish, though it does lack the vibrance and complexity of multiple flavors that dance over my tongue in the best years of Yquem. An impressive effort for the vintage, and very enjoyable to drink especially at a discount as this was at auction. (And a fabulously stored auction bottle at that...) I'm glad I got to try it. 91 Day 2: Again, good richness and spice throughout, good balanced acidity on palate, but flavors just aren't quite as complex as they usually are with Yquem. Consistent with note from yesterday. I'm again impressed by the balance and overall enjoyment, but again note the relative lack of depth compared to other Yquem. Day 3: Starting to lose a bit of flavor and vibrancy. Still has pronounced orange/citrus component on nose and palate. Will finish today.

Double Blind 1993s From Around the World (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind from 375ml bottle. Clearly identifiable as Sauternes with good layers of botrytis. Somewhat simple and one dimensional with modest fruit that is showing older than I'd expect from 20 yo d'Yquem, even from an average vintage.

1993 Horizontal - The Papies at year 20! (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): We were worried about what we would get here read many notes about off putting smells. No issues with this bottle though. An orange ting to the colour to remind you this is not a young puppy and from then on the wine tells beautiful story of purity, balance and structure. Full on alive, vibrant and with good acidity held its own well and proved once again that vintages come and go but Yquem is Yquem. And we will leave it to that! 94-96

There was something slightly off about this bottle. The nose was showing very little and at first the palate was. Very hollow in the middle. Over time the palate filled out and the typical herbed honey yquem notes started to show. It never got as good as it should've been. Bummer.

Paired with Creme Brulee next to 95 with fromaggi misti con miele di tartufo. Just awesome the 93 seemed to be more concentrated bolder flavors of tropical fruits pair, pineapple etc. Felt a bit thicker also more like honey. Yquem will deliver every time in my opinion, and excellent way to conclude a fabulous dinner.

AWSEC Great Bordeaux Tasting (AWSEC, Hong Kong): This was not a great year for Sauternes. It looks quite dark - orange even. Very thick and glycerin. A bit funky on the nose with truffles and a little acetone. Not great - especially compared to the Rieussec. Wood very obvious. Slightly buttery note. Again this shows the value of the vintage.

The Other Great French Blancs: Champagne and Sauternes (Wink Restaurant, Austin, Texas): Shared top honors in a good flight of Sauternes, it had the darkest hue of the flight, deep gold, and a slightly medicinal nose, maybe like poultry right out of the bag. Tasters had various opinions about the palate here, most of them positive: notes of dried fig, apricot, dried fruit, lemon peel, candied orange rind, lemon meringue, tart coffee puffs, petrol, pine, plastic, gunpowder, and some iron minerality, with a hint of smoke or toast. A critic of the wine thought it tasted like sour drapes and tired laundry. Was that sour grapes or sour drapes Some tasters thought the finish amazing and layered, others that it was quick and the flavors flattened. This difference might have been due to how long the wine had been opened, because this wine might be better if decanted for at least 30 minutes.

(Very old note for personal reference) Full and complex nose. A load of saffron. Layer upon layer. Dried apricots, cocos, oak, butter and botrytis. Mighty. Notes of maturity in the form of shoe polish. Very full, fat, dense and sweet palate. Just about ready. The young impression of sugar has resided. A monster combination of saffron, oak and botrytis. But also elegance thanks to acid and grip. Weak vintage and still such a dense and powerful wine....
