  • Richly fruited. White peach and apricot on the nose and in the mouth. Loads of spice and plenty of mineral. Creamy and layered, explosive and deep. There’s some flint to the incredibly long finish.

  • Served blind, this was so obviously great from the first whiff. The type of wine you just start getting giddy. Massively deep, palate staining, so much material here one could ponder it for hours and hours. Very polished, refined, and pretty much perfect in every way. Importantly, it continued to improve in the glass - whereas a Leroy served next to it, while stunning at the start, was fading. So the true class of Montrachet came through even blind. Of course I was hoping on the reveal it would be something obtainable, oh well. This is an absolutely spectacular wine, I am thrilled and grateful to have been able to drink it.

  • Ye Paulee (Hao Noodle): 03173/3640, 00/04/08 trio. Really shy today, very composed, pure white fruit, good weight. Perhaps just needs age. 94++

  • Opened in Hong Kong. DRC Assortment Tasting.

This was the only wine of the flight not from 2014. It also happened to be our collective WOTN.

This is an epic wine. Incredibly aromatic upon first pour: white flowers mixed with butter and brioche. Yet, the nose kept on evolving over the course of several hours. At some points there was more popcorn, at other times there was more salinity coming through. On the palate, this is as intense as Chardonnay can get. Great richness which is balanced by sharp acidity and minerality. This wine just keeps giving and there are so many layers to peel back.

For my tastes, this wine is at peak. This should hold for a few years at least, but if you are lucky enough to have this in your cellar, don't hesitate to open this for a (very) special occasion!

  • Close to perfection in a glass. Extremely well integrated with notes of peach and pineapple and the acids and tannins melted in to balance it all out. Definitely at the top of its game

  • A touch of reduction to the aroma but breathes up beautifully in the glass. Wonderfully complex, showing notes of explosive white peach, freshly cut pineapple, fennel tops and smoky mineral. It is rich, layered and voluminous, a big wine but perfectly proportioned and balanced. The finish simply drives on and on.

  • White floral aromatics. Bracing, d’Auvenay-like acidic tension on palate. (03039/3640)

  • Stunning bottle, DRC Monty at its best. Clean citrus notes with slightest tinge of cream. Crystalline, pure and dense palate, great length. (1309/3640)

  • Another great showing from this vintage. Very rich, beginning to show some truffly tertiary development. This took a good 6 hours to fully open up. Stunning

  • Deep, rich, and full. Tropical fruits. Hints of botrytis. Dark floral nose. Successfully finished the evening and played off of the notes in a not so sweet pineapple upside down cake.

  • Decanted and served, it surprised me with a big, piercing aromatic profile right away, and that grew bigger for the next 30 minutes. The tremendous perfume of white fruit, flowers and citrus was followed by zippy, sappy acidity, a beguiling slight hint of botrytis or something similarly complex and spicy, with a long, long and cristalline finish.Magnificent.

  • This is my second bottle of this magnificent wine, the first being only four months ago. In the end my appreciation of the wine and my vote is the same, but there was one big difference. Whereas the first took significant time to open up, this one had a huge, penetrating aromatic profile immediately upon opening and decanting. Reason? The only clue is that the two bottles have different provenance, but I did not record the number of either bottle – shame on me.

Anyway, this is a breathtaking, dazzling, near-perfect and very big wine. On the white Burgundy spectrum this is clearly on the restrained, mineral, transparent, silky and balanced side. Intense floral aromas carry hints of citrus and vanilla, with sappy, savory, spicy flavors, all supported by a body of structure and precision and in silky harmony. There are hints of sweet opulence, but only hints, as this wine’s greatness is based on structure, complexity and silkiness. Fabulous with pesce crudo, but able to accompany an endless variety of dishes.

  • Decanted and served, this was tight and didn’t open at all for 35 minutes, and then it blossomed and was fully open at 60 minutes. It has great aromas of white fruits and citrus, with a lovely floral element; tremendous structure and precision. As great as it is on the nose, it is the palate that is truly outstanding, a fabulous, intense and almost tactile rendering of its aromas. It is succulent, elegant, and chiseled, all at once. Breathtakingly long mineral finish.

  • The great outing (Aalborg, Denmark): What to say - what a wine! Deep, intense, round with some notes of brioche, yet vibrant and precise with loads of minerals. I could have stayed here ... truly unique

  • La Tache dinner. Pale gold, pretty. Starts real angular, citrus and tight but eventually blossoms with wonderful floral notes. Viscous and intense, yet also elegant and delicate. (904/3640)

  • Corked. And to say that's devastating is an understatement.

  • Extremely controversial bottle tonight. Split decision calling this corked, but I can’t find the TCA. Overripe and maybe a bit of boytritus. Palate is rich and dense with thick yellow fruit. Certainly off, but not corked, and honestly not that bad. Extremely rich, fat, and dense. It is clear that there is a spectacular wine in here, but this bottle is wrong. ~90-91 as it stands now, but not the sensational and endless beauty these wines should be.

  • Round and shallow. Clear what it was, but not the best rendition of it.

  • At Wine Group Xmas Lunch. The best of 7 Montrachets with a pale green gold colour and a nose of many characters with white peach, pear, jasmine, touches of honey and butter with lots of nuances that developed in the glass. The palate is intense yet more delicate and nuanced than the 2006 and 2007 with real drive and power leading to a gripping and persistent finish. A beautiful wine that shines in this more elegant year.

  • DRC M 75-11. Somewhat oxidized, but not undrinkable. Honey, toffee, advanced nose. Rich and viscous.

  • Nineteen vintages of DRC Montrachet: The 2004 was literally a rock star, and for me it was the #2 wine of the night.

  • Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Cellar Visit and Tasting (Vosne-Romanée): Tasted blind at the domaine. Honeyed and slightly caramelized with baked apple, fresh apple. Fruit centric start, leaner in the middle, then finishing with modest spice and good textures. I thought this certainly older, as did all other tasters this morning. While I've never had this wine before from this vintage, I'm wondering if this was an imperfect bottle.

  • Just an amazing bottle of wine. The nose is stupendous. While some could argue that the palate lags behind the nose just let it sit for a bit.

  • Tropical fruits.. lots of passion fruit... super well integrated oak. That mineral stone is unbelievable. over the next hour + continued to open up. Started to get more hints of citrus. Could have lasted for much longer. Really Beautiful.

  • Iconic wine, the oldest average vine age in the DRC holdings. (62 years old)It IS a good wine, but the price is way TOO high. 4000 USD per bottle? Come on! I'm not a billionaire, but I am fortunate that I had the chance to taste this wine. Personally speaking it was not as good as 2005 Louis Latour Montrachet for the sake of concentration, it was slightly watery in the finish. But the nose was superb, the balance as well as the body. I'm looking forward to drinking the legendary 1986, could I have the chance before I die?

  • Rich and explosive, dripping with orchard fruits and filling every crevice of the mouth with fruit/mineral nectar. For its sheer size it was harnessed by fabulous acidity and length of flavour was phenomenal.

  • Showing incredibly well for this early period - it is a towering wall of fruit! Incredible wine especially since it avoids the overripeness so often found in the DRC Montrachet. Lovely.

  • An explosion in the nose. A lot of toasted oak in the bouquet, but there is much more; a lot of tropical fruits, minerals like flint stone etc. On the palate a lot of smoky oak as well, beautiful citrus, also oranges, apricots, minerals etc. Everything is so youthful still. The finish is enormously long. What a great and complex wine with a lot of body, concentration and also elegance. No comparison with other Burgundy whites. Some of the best Californian chardonnays show the same concentration and luxury. I feel privileged I had the opportunity to drink this. I love this style. If you are lucky enough to have this; wait at least another 5+ years.

  • Dreamtasting #1 (Restaurant Le Défi, Sprang-Capelle): (*, open label) This was one clenched fist of unforgiving power and strength and took a long time in the glass to unfurl. I mainly was impressed by the unforgettable bouquet. Intoxicating nose of spices like cinnamon, mace/nutmeg and vanilla, sappy tropical fruit sorbet of banana, pine-apple and peach. Also something faintly resinous, pine needle-like in the back. At this moment I thought the oak-dosage was a little too much, but that will definately mellow in time. On the palate it showes beautiful acidity and strength, but it has a hard time to show what its got. This wine clearly was too young, and it will take a few years for all the complexity and harmony to fuse and melt into something otherworldly. Right now it has the slightly clumsy behaviour of a prince, who is just a little bit too young to carry the wealth and descent. But someday he will be king. 18,5/20

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet (Frankrijk, Bourgogne, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru) Kleur: Vol goudgeel Aroma / bouquet: Expressief en complex, zeer overweldigend. Boenwas, kaarssvet, tropisch fruit, banaan, stroopwafel-stroop, uitgesproken houtgebruik, vanille, zelfs wat kaneel-achtig, rokerig, Vleugje 'groenten-nat', gekookte kool, gebrande beukennootjes. Smaak / Afdronk: Friszure aanzet, prachtige rondeur, geweldige mondvulling. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 15 + Smaak / Afdronk: 19 + Algemeen / potentieel: 10 = 99/100

  • Burgundy for Lunch (Scottsdale, AZ): Crazy greenish gold color, this was a nuclear Montrachet. I was surprised at how giving this was out of the gate. It was huge, of course, and evolved in the glass for many hours. However, young Montrachet so often presents a wall to climb, and this wasn't the case today. On this day, this was a better wine than the '05 -- but in time, I expect them to switch roles. In the grand scheme of things, it's just crazy to drink this stuff at this stage and I am eternally grateful to the generous friend who opened it.

  • I am embarrassed to admit that this is the third time I have had this wine. It's such a baby, it begs for many years to slumber. Alas, when the opportunity is there... My experience tonight consistent with the other times: loads of minerality, abundant (but not excessive) acidity, and some petrol on the nose. Even after several hours, just not giving but a hint of what it will some day. On the other hand, though it's giving much less than it's going to give some day, it's currently quite balanced. A wine of tremendous promise. B now, undoubtedly A or better someday.

  • Pop and pour and consumed over the course of our 4 hour meal. Aromatic nose of ripe apricot and peach, honey, caramel, and a touch of oak with delicate floral notes interwoven through out. Huge, intense, concentrated wine on the palate -- this creamy wine delivers loads of clean, pure fruit and floral flavors well balanced by crisp acidity, and a subtle minerality. Finishes long but with a noticeable oak bitterness. To my and my wife's palates (at least at this point 10+ years before maturity!) this wine seemed very much fruit driven -- not at all reticent -- and only hinting at the elegance and refinement I suspect it will gain in 10 years time.

  • G7 (Dave): Noticeable oak on the palate. Tropical fruits and caramel. Very tight. Rich and concentrated. Huge upside. Needs time. Would love to try this one in 10 years.
