Slowly maturing red cherry and berry with hints of baking spice and roasted meat. Much more accessible than most 2005 1er Cru, this is charming and balanced already right now, with an expanding finish. Good through 2035ish.

Really excellent. This wine always hits the right notes for me but I was expecting it to be a typical still-shutdown 2005. It is among the best 2005s I have had — deeply textured, layers of red fruit flavors mingled with tingling acidity. Tannins are present but starting to soften. Just entering it’s drinking phase and it will last a long time but no sadness in drinking now.

2005 Volnay Premier Cru Tasting and Lunch (San Francisco): Deep ruby color. Powerful, forward, heady nose with prominent dark berries. Larger scale than the Giroud Taillepieds. Backward black fruit, noticeable oak, excellent acidity, still quite tannic with significant back end grip. This is unready, but it does get a lot better with air.

Still relatively dark for a burgundy, but representative of its vintage. Lovely aromas of cherries, earth and furniture polish. In the mouth there is no shortage of freshness, but the key theme - again representative of its vintage - is the intense and persistent fruit throughout the taste curve. Great length. Satisfying wine!

open in bottle for 2h before tasting bouquet still youthful considering the 15y of age (was stored in a very good, but cool cellar). Mushrooms, earthy notes, hints of forest floor, red fruits such as cherries, leather, toffee. very high acidity, medium alc, medium tannins, medium body, very long finish. delicate aromas on the palate and very complex. as if the wine would prance like a ballerina. enormous drink flow. red fruits leather, woody notes as well. has few more years in the bottle.

- Tasted again from the bottle / 2h open. - Nose: Nice fresh nose of strawberries, plums, vanilla and despite the 2005 vintage still very young: mainly characterised by primary and secondary aromas. From time to time also some forest soil, earth and mushroom. Still has a lot of potential! - Mouth: Extremely fresh acidity (high), giving strong drinking flow. Even younger in the mouth than in the nose. Very filigree. Really floats in the mouth. Medium body, medium tannins and very good length. - Very great wine, still has a good 10 years of staying power, but now also quite accessible.

This is the first bottle, out of 7 so far, that I have enjoyed. I think I got a case from Acker Merrall auction that was stored poorly. Or maybe it is age, but I doubt it. This bottle is good. Not tons of length, but there is fruit and some complexity and it smells good, not bad!

Blind. Mint, aromatic, blueberries, smoked meat, some complexity on the nose; Quite full bodied, fresh, structured, a bit too much knuckles and bones still. Complex finish, though.

this wine has been consistently disappointing, particularly given the vintage. i bought a case at auction from Acker Merrall in 2009. it's not spoiled. but it has no fruit whatsoever. i dont see it getting any better. every bottle i have has been the same. maybe it was improperly stored by them.

Concentrated on the nose - dark fruit, meaty, smoky, spicy, mineral. Not very harmonious on the palate - very dense, very rich, spicy, powerful tannins, good length. Not sure this was a representative bottle (it seemed quite different to the one I had about two years ago), but I can't say I liked it a lot. Maybe time will help here. 89-90+(?)

Very dark for a burgundy. Closed on the nose. In the mouth aromas of cherries and some oak appear, and a sweet-and-sour character more often encountred in italian wines. Good stuffing and length. I'll wait a few years before the next bottle.

Volnay tasting: We were warned about this being fully shut down. At least for this bottle, that was not completely true. Dark fruit, some herbs here as well, big bodied, tight, decent dose of tannin. Open a bit up after many hours in the glass, but never fully. Wait 10-20 years. Rating for now.

Quite a few things surprised me about this wine: - It was somewhat approachable (although still dense and compact - needs time) - Very, very muscular dark fruit. Kind of like the power of Pommard but with the flavor profile of Volnay - Damn, it was good. Need to seek out more of these

Nice earthiness, cherry, stewed fruit and some spice on the nose initially ... though the spice faded. Robust and chewy but over time nice lightness and effervescence on the pallate. Good acidity and nice balance. Really enjoyable and will improve. Drank vs an 08 Panther Creek Shea from Oregon and it blew it away.

Deep, dark, surly and penetrating. There are some meaty notes coupled with a shot of espresso from the oak. The fruit is all dark cherry and it has a seriously earthy base. It has phenomenal structure and is not to be approached at this early juncture as it is probably a decade or two away from any real pleasure.

Deep ruby. My god, did this have a gorgeous beacon of celestial black raspberry fruit which carried it from beginning to end. A little more generous than the Angerville wines and with a detectable trace of wood, but it still had the delicacy of Volnay within the context of this larger scaled vintage. Earth and anise round things out and make for an irresistable blend of sensations. Make no mistake-there is a boatload of structure here, but the tannins are incredibly fine, and the strong acidity is at the core of the wine without imparting any tartness. Of the 5 or 6 vintages of this wine that I've tasted, this is far and away the most complete and impeccably balanced. It will last forever. I'm so glad I got to try it.

France Trip; 6/29/2023-7/10/2023 (France (Paris, Burgundy, & Champagne)): Lot of power here. Strong gripping tannins, but delicate, not chalky, much lighter
Lot of richer fruits, cherry.
Initially the finish had hints of a smokey, whole cluster production. Faded more so over time.
Delicious.
