Lush, velvet, silky. The wine just glides down effortlessly. Cherries, strawberries, plum, blueberries. Slight tobacco and leather, eucalyptus, peppercorn. Fruit was on the ripe side but not overpowering. Long lingering finish. Sublime. So generous PNP, got even better with a little air.

Unico + BBQ Makes for Quite the Night (Los Olivos, CA): Nearing if not at peak, with all the components working harmoniously to present a complete product. Very complex aromatics, with roasted herbal notes vying for primacy with dark fruit, smoke and tobacco notes. Energetic in the mouth, fresh and with good tension. Edged out by its 1981 older brother by a hair or two, but what they shared is more notable, specifically Right Bank-like attributes as the bottle age has allowed the Bordeaux components to come to the fore, adding red fruit notes which are a touch sweet.

After struggling with the cork that went into multiple pieces despite my using special decorker for old bottles, a pocket knife and a cork screw, I managed to salvage the wine. Noble crimson ruby red color, definite evolution there, very little bricking. On the nose, immediate strawberries, brambles, candied red apples, cinnamon cake. Pure silk on the palate, creeps up on you mid palate as it gains strength and grip, very complex structure and a mouth and palate coating long finish with acidity and tannins present but shielded by the beautiful structure and fruits. A real stunner. 6 bottles left!

One of Vega's best vintages which I have seen evolve over the past 10 years. Beautiful mature ruby red color. Nose of candied red fruits, sweet spices and quintessentially balanced Vega. On the palate builds strength with time in the decanter. A very subtle and refined entry on the palate, amazing structure and acidity, medium to full bodied, goes with about any food you can think of and finishes very long and darker red and blue fruits and cola. Tannins very soft. Lovely wine and a pure classic.

Blind WOTN, many people said bx, Italy. I was in Spain but went for a younger Rioja. This wine is timeless and not reached his peak. I would never guess 82. A bit like an old school bordeaux but also hint for an old sassicaia in great shape. Elegant without any sign of oxidation in the sense of vividless. 98

Had 1982 and 1974 side by side, both are much more integrated (in terms of oak) than the 1996 vintage we had about three weeks ago. Both are still fresh and show good ageing capability, especially the 1982 one. On the nose, black currants, a touch of vanilla, gently rubbed leather, minerals, modest smoke, exotic spices, on the palate, as the oak is quite integrated already, the texture was smooth and the tannin was round yet chewy, there was gentle acidity, spices and minerals on the finish. Comparing these two, 1982 certainly showed more strength and complexity, it got more layers on the finish, showed both power and grace, the 1982 was my WOTN that day.

Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): Tasted side-by-side with the '74. A stunning wine from the get go that continued to stay strong and improve over the course of dinner. Incredible concentration yet elegant. Layer after layer reveals itself across the palate. Still quite youthful and densely primary. Long, long finish.

Dinner at S.K.Y. with The Little Horse and Ms. Bubblehead (Chicago, IL): While the 1974 was obviously a great wine, I actually preferred this a little more, because it fit better with my preconceived notions of Unico. This is a voluptuous wine, with so much generous black fruit and American oak on the nose. It is undeniably rich, and a fruit bomb in the best sense of the word. There is leather, smoke, and spice all mixed up in the fruit as well. On the palate, there is the sweetness of dried prunes, but not of the heat-damaged persuasion. Notes of leather and earth add rusticity to a very silky palate. Absolutely incredible stuff.

Absolutely fantastic bottle and one of my favorite Vegas. Fully soaked cork, excellent condition and aroma, blackberries, blueberries, spice cake, cola. Decanted and aerated for two hours, and drank over another two. Deep crimson color, slight evolution on the rims but still youthful, this is one of the most pristine bottles of 82 VS I have had. On the palate superb complexity, density and richness to the fruit, very complex with multiple layers supported by good acidity, vivaciousness and balance. Medium to full bodied, long finish with tannins still present and very fine. A wine to drink or to cellar for the next 10-15 years at least.

Ordered off wine list at Nice Matin. From a magnum. This was just awesome. Unfortunately we didn't really have time to go through the full evolution of it. the wine is clearly still young. Opened and decanted and poured and swirled quite a bit in the glass. First taste was tight. As it opened up it's the red fruits with peppercorn and just a depth and complexity that I always marvel at. Never quite hit full expression from what I could tell. Last sip was the best. Delicious wine.

Best bottle so far. Crimson color with bricking throughout a clear sign of age. Decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over 2. On the nose very complex red, black and blue berries, anise, caramel, flowers. On the palate the entry is shy but then evolves into a rich array of berries, and a honeyed cola finish, very long. Medium to full bodied wine, very complex, acidity and fruit in perfect harmony.

I will refrain from rating it and describing the wine as I don’t believe an hour’s decant is enough. I think this wine needs at least a couple of hours in the decanter to properly aerate and show off its capabilities and will do that for my next bottles.
Somptueux magnum!

A really good bottle of Vega Sicilia. At perfect maturity with still time in hand. Depth of fruit, clarity, complexity, none of the volatile elements old Vega Sicilias often show. It would have been interesting to have it along top Bordeaux's from the same vintage - I guess Vega Sicilia would have been fuller and sweeter than most otherwise it would be very similar.
On the nose it had the patina of age with depth of blackcurrant fruit, notes of orange peel, herbs like mint and leather. It was savoury and sweet on the palate with almost full body, mellow tannins and good balancing acidity. A great wine.

Vega Sicilia Unico Dinner with Pablo Alvarez (Betony): Strong and distinct nose, still mostly young black and purple berry fruit. Chocolate, liquorice, and lacquered black cherry. Little varnishy. Syrupy but also quite dry through the palate. Smells ten years younger than the '86 and '87. Built to last. Wound up palate.

Decanted and drank over 4 hours. Dense and sweet black fruit, tobacco and old wet cedar on the nose. Over time more sweet red fruit and spice came out on the palate. Outstanding balance, depth and silky texture. This bottle had just been shipped the day before, so I am going to wait to rate this 'officially' until I have another after they have rested.

Great wines for no special reason (Duke's house): Served early and remained the wotn over an evening of great wines. Somehow, this shows both power and restraint. Bright red fruit, bright tannins and a touch of smoke and leather all vying for attention in your mouth simultaneously. Absolutely no sign of age on this wine. The more I have the opportunity to taste older Vegas, the more I think they are among my favorite wines (and this from a burgundy lover). Thanks for serving this.

'82 is the oldest vintage of Unico I've had to date (I hope one day I can get my hands on a '68). 4 bottles of '82 drunk so far, all consistently great. Last bottle drunk last week. Decanted and drank over 2 hours in the company of friends who appreciate Unico's uniqueness. Evident browning at the rim, beautiful crimson color at the core, very dense wine almost syrupy. Aromas of sweet blackberries, plums, sweet spices and tobacco, cashmere attack on the palate, black fruit explosion mid palate rendered complex with multiple tones of spices, sweet tobacco, and moccha, fully resolved tannins, minerality / iron dimension to the wine, solid backbone, and a long flabberghasting finish. Hedonism at its essence. I hope my '94 Unicos last another 12 - 15 years so that I can attain the pleasures brought on by the '82!

From Magnum. Much brighter fruit on the nose than the magnum of '68. Sweet baking spice (clove, nutmeg, cinnamon) with the classic "bloodlike/iron" aromas. A hint of anise. Great palate with the dark fruit coating the mouth. Very soft tannins with a long finish.
