The nose is alive and kicking with nice beef and some bell pepper notes. The palate is a little weak in the mid palate and somewhat tired. More acid than fruit but some nice bright cherry notes. Bit of dust.
A 50th birthday party for R. S brought a 3L of this for dinner. Decanted for 1/2 hour. Smooth, medium bodied. Great aged cab of muted dark fruit with dust notes. Good finish. I wouldn't think a 750 bottle would be drinking this well so should probably drink up.
I was worried before drinking this that the wine was passed its prime. My worries eased when I saw it in the glass. A beautiful magenta purple with not a hint of brickish red or any other colors indicating it was too old. The nose was pure Cab: plum, blackberry, spice, and oak. The dominant fruit I got on the palate was black cherry. This wine was silky and elegant. It paired wonderfully with filet mignon. A fantasic drinking experience.
Sam and Mike's house. This was in 3 LIter format, and was the first large bottle I EVER purchased. It has been stored in my cellar for the past 8 years in perfect conditions. I must say I was really surprised by this wine. I expected it to be good, but not this good. If you have this in 750's you need to drink it up, but if you've got a mag or larger it's still vibrant. Lots of sweet fruit, perfectly balanced, with maybe a hint of VA to it. That was something I did not expect considering the cool 96 vintage. This did not need any decanting, but I did open it about 3 hrs before dinner. Lovely!
