Guys night - course meal (Kevin and Vicki's house): Drank a small glass over 45 minutes. Not that different from a bottle 8 years ago, and its quite impressive that Suduiraut pulled this off in 2006. Relatively sweet and rich, but there is a lot of spicy botrytis here. It strays from a GREAT Sauternes by being a touch lacking in complexity and attack, but man, still quite pleasurable.

Very pretty, a lighter expression of Sauternes with honey and botrytis spice framing bright citrus and tropical fruit flavours. The botrytis is here in spades though it never feels heavy thanks to surprising acidity here. Lovely wine that (unsurprisingly) paired very well with canelés for dessert.

I love how this is developing. Rich and heavy, but there is a good acidity to the wine that carries the experience through to a very long and lingering finish. Classic profile with honey, apricot, sweet lemon, pear. A nice floral note on the nose and a little cooking spice (clove?, nutmeg?) in the transition to the finish. Very rewarding and I think I should drink more if these. A couple bottles left and I think they will last another decade. But really, why wait?

Friday Night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Golden bright and still on the youthful side of Sauternes and really bright and delicious. Soft honey, light waxy palate, soft sweet lemon, apricots and just drinks seamlessly. Great and always come back from trying these wines asking “ why are we not drinking more of them?” Easy 92-93

A 750cl bottle from Paul (who likes this so much he’s bought a second case). Dark for a Suduiraut. Strong botrytis hazelnut nose which fades and leaves candied orange peel with a welcome touch of bitterness. Complex palate includes apricot. Good acidity and length of finish. Bigger and darker than usual I would have guessed Rieussec if served blind. Still a lovely slightly underrated wine which will age for decades. The ‘83 was excellent last year.

Out with Charles (St. Genevieve): Bought this 375 for cheap and didn't expect much in an off-year. Wow, this Sauternes delivered. It is relatively sweet and rich, but there is a lot of spicy botrytis here. It strays from a GREAT Sauternes by being a touch thin in complexity and attack, but man, still quite pleasurable. Suduiraut and Rieussec seem to have stepped up their game in 2005+.

"I'm Bored" pot luck lunch at Kevin's 4/1/15. Rich golden color. Sweet Honetsuckle nose with a “sliver” of fusil. Honetsuckle / peaches apparent on palate. Sweetness balanced beautifully with acidity preventing even a suggestion of a cloyingly sweet wine. Long finish. Wonderful even at young age. (Definitly not an April Fools Joke by Gary.)

A Wild Wednesday (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): REally pretty medium deep gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. Oh my was this in a good place. Just tickles the olfactory senses and sets off a cavalcade of delectable aromas and flavors. The nose is complex with pineapple, apricot, peach cobbler, honey, and honeysuckle. The palate is so well balanced showing crisp acidity and freshness of fruit that is just the right amount of sweet, pineapple, orange, apricot, honey, vanilla creamsicle, mildly spiced, lifted finish. Delicious. Clearly WOTN. 93+pts.

Really nice wine here, but lacking the concentration and lush character found in the best vintages. Still, there is ample layers of honey coated apricots, orange, pineapple, vanilla bean and floral scents to get you going. The sweet, fresh, luscious, spicy, honeyed finish is a treat. This will only get better with time.

Deep and very intense golden yellow color. Cool and somewhat herbal yet very rich and complex nose with aromas of pronounced toasty character, exotic spices, cinnamon bread, some honey, a little bit of dried pineapple, a botrytized hint of fried mushrooms and a touch of syrup. The wine is very full-bodied, quite sticky and extremely rich on the palate with very complex and intense flavors of honey, toffee, vanilla, toasted bread, some white syrup, a little bit of fried citrus fruits, a hint of candied orange peel and a touch of pineapple. The wine is only medium-to-moderate in acidity, which accentuates the sweetness and richness of the wine. The finish is extremely complex and almost endless with layered and ridiculously persistent flavors of toffee, toasty oak spice, honey, some Weetabix, a little bit of exotic spice, a hint of smoke and a touch of dried apricots.
An incredibly complex, rich and weighty Sauternes that once again shows why Suduiraut just might be my favorite Sauternes Château. This vintage seems to have put richness, cocnentration and weight over freshness and elegance, but the wine still retains enough acidity to pull it all off remarkably well. Overall the wine is still pretty young, only light bready and toasty qualities hinting at bottle age - otherwise the wine is still very youthful in style. Although not painfully young, i.e. the wine is drinking very nicely right now, it is still more about future potential than immediate enjoyment. I'd let the wine age at least twice as long before returning to it. Very lovely.

EK 148 AMS -> DXB 1st Class (A380): Medium(+) golden-lemon, viscous with widely spaced slow moving legs. Medium complex aromas of peach, orange peel, diesel, caramel, botrytis. Sweet, medium acidity, medium body and medium(+) alcohol. Medium(+) flavors of sweet ripe stone fruits, lemon zest, cinnamon, butter. Rich and unctuous mouthfeel, buttery lip-smacking texture. The balance between acidity-richness combined with the packed flavors end with a long lasting finish. An excellent wine

Magic Number 6 - 2006,1996,1986,1976,1966 (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Side by side with its grandad the 1966. Golden, waxy glossy in colour. Lovely balance and freshness with good notes of apricot, honey, light lemon and botrytis. Well round and fresh on the palate, decent acidity. Fine it is not the most in terms of depth and complexity but no way anyone would not enjoy this wine. For the record we liked it more than the 1966 ( Papies 90); Here is to the beauty of youth then! 92 maybe more.

Lunch with Nicholas Pegna of Berry Brother & Rudd (Moluccas Room, Marina Bay Sands): A nice wine, with a very noticeable Suduiraut stamp on it, from its orange peel amd lemon rind accents on the nose, along with a bit of honey and apricots and slightly chalky scents, to a nice, fresh palate, with apricots, sweet lemons and even a touch of jackruit, shaded with a lick of minerality at the finish. I really liked the balance on this wine. There was a nice caramelly weight on the creamy attack and a nice touch of honeyed depth on the midpalate, yet without a single hint of sluggish heaviness. Unlke many youngish Sauternes, I could acually imagine myself drinking quite a few glasses of this. Good stuff. While I like my Sauternes with a good bit of age on them, this is actually quite approachable now, especially when paired with the right food. On the day, I thought it went particular well with a pandan pancake topped with jackfruit and a touch of sweet coconut sauce.

This Suduiraut was beautiful on the nose with lots of honey and pineapple! On the palet it was thick as oil and had a good mouth feel with the honey maybe a bit too much but still very good! The finish had nice acidity to back up the sweet tones and all together an enjoyable sauternes!

JohnR's "wake": Tasted with Phredd and the gang at "JohnR's wake". I echo Phredd's notes (see below) and like he mentions, guessed this was the 02 since it displays "older" green pea and dried fruit characteristics. My thoughts are the green pea comes from the Sauvignon Blanc used in the blend, and even though not a majority %, we all know how grassy and vegetal SB can be. By no means am I a "ratings guy" but I intentionally bought the 02 and 06 for this blind tasting, with WS scores of 90 and 96 respectively for the exact same price of $39.99, and we were left scratching our heads once the wines were revealed. While it did not have the depth and expressiveness of the '01, the '02 was much better than the '06 in quality and therefore value. Nonetheless the '06 is still a fine Sauternes and will be interesting to see how it develops with a few more years under it's belt. Overall rating- A-.

NC Cindy Tasting. JohnR's Wake. (WineKnurd's House): NC Cindy Tasting. "JohnR's Wake". Tasted single-blind alongside the 2002 version of the same wine, both from splits, this was by far the darker of the two in the glass, showing a nice dark gold. This wine was also the more viscous of the two. On the nose, this showed very dusty apricots with some stewed oranges and maybe even a trace of sweet green peas. The palate was similarly secondary in nature, with lots of botrytis and dark apricot with just a hint of pineapple at the top end, but even the pineapple aspect was more like dried pineapple than fresh. Thicker and more mouth-coating than the other bottle, this had a substantial, but not eternal, finish that included a bit of unpleasant bitterness to it. Everyone at the table agreed, incorrectly, that this must be the older wine. In the end, I thought it had a bit less depth of flavor than the '02, and the prominence of the secondary flavors on a wine this young makes me wonder if this has the fruit to stand up to long-term aging. Overall, a very good effort, albeit not truly spectacular.

Impressions on some 2008 Bordeaux (and some '98s and '88s): Surprisingly approachable, this is very floral and expressive on the bouquet, and kinda light-bodied and elegant for a Sauternes. Given how inexpensive I seen this one, a very nice buy for a early enjoyment.

14.0% alcohol. From half bottle. Lovely, light honey color. Intoxicating bouquet of apricot, ripe peach, honey, and spice. In the mouth, viscous and palate-coating, with a range of ripe fruits caressing the palate, enlivened by spicy notes and terrific acidity. Finish just goes on. This is absolutely terrific. A-/A

2006 Bordeaux Masterclass: Alcohol :: 14% After a set of young white and red Bordeaux, this is indeed a very good ending. Medium, bring golden color. Lots of Bortrytis spices with almond, pineapple, mango, dried apricot, peaches with underlying preserve plum and mineral. Lovely. Viscous, very rich, oily in texture but this turn into clean dry mouth feel when the ripe, lively acidity kick in and penetrate into the super rich, oily texture for good vibrancy and focus with a juicy finish that's long and complex with some rubbery, nutty tones. Buy - Maybe.

Liquid gold. Nice botrytis funk on the nose, with apricot and honey. Similar in the mouth, with more tropical fruits -- tangerine, mango, and sweet honeydew. Mouth-filling, with good weight and enough acidity to make the balance perfect. Everlasting finish.

Suduiraut Vertical: A unique nose but a little low on the fruit concentration. A very enjoyable wine that just pales to the comparison vintages in this tasting. We tasted 88-89-97-01-03-05-06-07 Suduiraut.

A little too sweet on the palate, but very tasty with balanced acidity. Deep flavors of tropical fruits and botrytis come through deliciously. If additional aging mellows out the sweetness this will become a wonderful wine.

Tangerine, honey, passion fruit, crushed stones follow from the nose to the palate. The tangerine element seems to dominate the full-bodied palate. Zingy acidity and a moderate finish round this out nicely. This will continue to gain some needed depth and personality with extended cellaring. Nothing special (right now), but well made nonetheless. Approx $20/375ml.
update: still rock solid on day 30 (fridge only, no gas), impressive

From a half. Drank with a 1983 Suduiraut to compare young vs. aged sauternes. Absolutely delicious. Shows great tropical fruits and honey, along with some botrytis flavors and apple. Palate shows baby fat, wonderful complexity with good acidity and balance. Palate also shows some orange/citrus finish. Day 5: Fantastic. This wine got significantly more complex by day 5. Easily a 93 point wine. Beautiful spice, fruit- especially orange, balanced sweetness (although still with a lot of baby fat). Beautiful. I wish the finish was a bit longer... that would add at least another point or two.

This is a fresh, well-balanced Sauternes with tropical apricot/mango. Good complexity and richness without too syrupy, but the nose wasn't particularly expressive and finish was a bit clipped. With age, I hope it would bring out all her nuances. But even now I can sip this all night.

This is terrific. Young, but gloriously filled with expressive aromas of coconut, pineapple, lemon zest, and stacked-and-packed with long, sweet flavors of creme brulee and apricots. Stylistically, it's more of a big rich 2003 than a racey minerally 2001, but it has good aciditic verve and terrific length. Seems very pure. There's a great yin-yang between intensity and sweetness. A very good QPR ~$20 per 375 ml. 93-94 pts.

WFA Bordeaux 2005/2006 Tasting by the Wine Review (Suntec Convention Centre, Singapore): Very nice, but perhaps just a small step down from the 2005. Very nice nose showed almonds and macadamias along with marmalade, citrus mandarin oranges and some chalky mineral - all very lifted and fragrant. A bit too sweet on the palate, but with nice layered flavours of sweet fruit along with some nuts, a little fresh grapefruity lift and a ream of smoke. Finish had a nice marzipan ring to it. A good Sauternes.

"Chameleon!" Straw in color. Nose of apricot and mangosteen. The wine really shines with balanced acidity and sweetness. Flavors of peach and apricot start the taste and the lingering finish shines with subtle honey notes. Very complex and it is difficult for me to describe all the layers of flavor. Each taste seemed to highlight something different. The wine smoothed out as it rested and became better over the hour or so it was tasted.

Sampled at the UGC event in Chicago. Far and away the best '06 Sauternes poured. Operates on a higher tone than the '03 or '01 vintages, with fresher acidity. Yet it still exhibits wonderful orange creamsicle notes. Not classic like the'01, but extremely tasty and worth purchasing if you are a Sud fan.

After a set of young white and red Bordeaux, this is indeed a very good ending.

A little too sweet on the palate, but very tasty with balanced acidity. Deep flavors of tropical fruits and botrytis come through deliciously. If additional aging mellows out the sweetness this will become a wonderful wine.
