Brick to garnet red with some ageing. The cork almost soaked through but healthy. Started out rather barnyardy on the nose, but that effect did partly air off. Fruit still perfectly alive. Herbaceousness, graphite, leather, spices, thyme and some floral/perfumy notes as well. Medium bodied and dry with smoothened chewy tannins. Well balanced by acidity. Some cedar-like oak, vegetal notes as well as some meatiness. Long aftertaste with graphite, perfumy liquorice and hints of chocolate. Drinking amazingly well at the moment but certainly has years left also. Truly enjoyable - wish I had some more.

Definitive Rhone (Fabi and Rosi European Kitchen Austin, Texas): A surprise, as the odd man out in a 1987-1991 vertical, this wine was light, slightly oxidized, but drank surprisingly well, had elegance. It had a pepper nose, and had a tea component. We detected some brett, smoked meats, cassis, tar, decar, candid bluebery, black pepper, leather, horsehair, rosemary. Many said that the wine was at its peak; knowing this vintage we'd have guessed it to be ten years past its prime, but it had finesse, smoothness, tartness, was very pleasant. One group scored it a 95, another a 90--enjoyed by all.
