We opened the bottle one hour before, did not decant it , when it came in the glass the wine was tired and the first impressions was to say that it was declining , the same for the palet, nothing bad, warm and then nearly no acidity anymore , but....after 1 hour the nose had a lot of new flavors to be discovered , really very attractive , leather, fraises , framboise , sweet orange, very sexy nose, but the palet didn't change ,

Belated birthday dinner: Agree with previous notes that this is fully resolved and drinking nicely. Nose needed some time to sort itself out as it was a little funky to begin with, but began to show a lovely restraint after a couple of hours. Silky elegant palate that made me think that it was a Vosne GC, seamless texture and a huge depth to the wine. Bright cherries note that led to a very fine and silky finish. Became a little pruney with air but what a showing still for a wine that is over 30 years old.

Pale garnet orange rim. Beautifully maturing notes of dried flowers, sour cherry, prune, sweet and peppery spices. A bit of undergrowth and tea leaves. So elegant and expressive now.

For a 1988 this is nicely resolved and integrated. No rough edges or acid spikiness that sometimes goes with this vintage. Just good old-school Grand Cru Burg. Nose gave it away as Burg immediately. Tasted blind, nobody guessed CdT. Guesses were all over, but because of how silky this seemed, the direction of guesses was more towards the Vosne/Chambolle side of things. I also detected a slight rusticity...like a bloody/animale thing...but just a hint. This is a lovely, complex wine.

This was beautiful and quite soft for an '88. Resolved and elegant and got better over the course of two hours. Fruit got brighter and more energetic. A complex mix sous bois, red fruits and hints of floral. Solid acidity and a nice line of minerality. My last few sips were around the 3 hour mark and it started to tighten up and show more '88 hardness. Gorgeous and in a great spot.

I have not had many good experiences with Clos de Tart. This was a wonderful exception. Quite similar to the 88 Rousseau CSJ in profile. A bit less length and complexity but not by much. Also quite wonderful tonight.

Complex aromatics of decaying leaves, earth, smoke, rose petals and brown sugar. It has good posture and a fine, minerally spine. It is still relatively compact but as it takes on air sweet cherry fruit intensifies at its core. It finishes with outstanding cut thanks to breezy acidity and length of flavour is terrific. Still has a long life ahead of it but a joy to drink today.

This was a lovely bottled much fresher than one a couple of years previous. Deceptively light in body. The nose was fabulous, there was still cherry fruit, some violets, truffley forest floor and a little subtle spice. The palate had a huge depth of flavour to it with the acidity in perfect balance, really very lovely indeed.

A stupendous bottle tonight, where all the cosmic elements aligned - much more rounded than previous bottles where all the components fell into place perfectly. A stinky, feral nose of sous-bois, red fruits, forest floor and sweet cherries mixed with soil and spices. Smells coming up from nowhere it seemed at times. Light weight yet somehow dense. Astonishing wine.

Unusual nose. Floral but also with some distinctively smell not exactly like wet earth. Not very clean nose. Maybe this is a more mature version of 2003 vintage with ripe and meaty fruits. Still hold up extremely well despite its age, should last for a while yet. Quite interesting and I am not sure why the great RP scores it 75 pts. 91-92 pts

Bordeaux v Burgundy III; 7/7/2012-7/9/2012 (The Square, London): Woooooof!!! This comes straight out of the glass as though it means business. Stinky, feral yet at the same time classy - kind of like a posh person who never washes. Over 2 hours this shifts and changes but at all times this has that depth of terroir that only the best of Burgundy can provide. Brisk acidity keeps in fresh as well and sits well against the fruit. Classy and feral.

Tasting of 1990 and 1988 vintages with Mike, second place, bright red color in the glass, black cherry fruit on the nose, more of the same on the palate, brighter and sweet fruit to taste, medium body and medium finish with too much acid on the aftertaste.

lovely maturity - nicely holding together with just a touch of age. Sylvain Pitiot's first vintage.
