I really do like this wine. It is still leaner style but I gave it a 60 minute decant which it needs. Bright acids, but lovely elegant aromatics. Violet, menthol. Fine light tobacco. I am not sure it will get much better but it certainly won’t get worse so I will keep my last few bottles for a few years. I like this style. The opposite of a blockbuster and it likes the food.

1st btl almost 7yrs ago. This has come along quite nicely since. Opened 3hrs ahead. Slow-oxed in 2 Burg glasses & btl leading up to dinner. Semi-opaque ruby center w/ lightening on rim. Intriguing aromas of meat, iron-earth & trace red berries. Nicely resolved & fairly weightless for syrah w/ decent lift & elegance. Palate offers subdued red fruit buttressed by mineral, licorice, tar, meat & other classic syrah notes. This is in its mid-term drinking wdw & quite good now. I'll likely save my last btl till 2025+. A modest 12.5% alc is appreciated! 91+ Excellent value here for $47 on release. Enjoyed it very much for a change but nothing will ever make me gaga over syrah:).

Very good. None of the barnyard funk others are experiencing. Classic Rhône Syrah with a bit of age, some secondary development in the savory, briny school. Tasty and balanced, mid-weight plus.

This was interesting, and while I'm certainly more accustomed to new world Syrah, this was much more reminiscent of a high elevation acidic Pinot Noir. The first couple of nights, very funky (centipede as we refer to it in our home), but there was some tart fruit beneath it. By night 3, the funk was mostly gone, leaving the acidic fruit, and a long mineral, slightly iron/blood-like flavor. This went decently well with pheasant, even with the funk on night 1, and complemented whatever we ate (it was versatile) but I wouldn't call this remarkable by any measure. I also can't imagine it has a ton of evolution or life left.

Red with slight bricking. Initially very feminine nose showing dark florals, asian spice which then shuts down to reveal more savory smoky meats, pepper and reddish black berries. Medium bodied and elegant palate shows a savory mix of reddish small fruits intermixed with brown sauce/pepper, good acidity, fine-grained tannins and a long smoky and mineral tinged finish. Very Burgundian.

This bottle had so much more to say than a bottle three years ago. A good dollop of funk complements rather than obscures the bright fruit. Excellent acidity provides structure and the tannins are quite tame. An excellent match for ratatouille. Drinking great now but no hurry.

This bottle has really blossomed since the last one 6 months ago. Gave this a 30 minute decant. Scent of violet and earth. Tastes of candied violet, dark berry and wet earth. Nice body in a lighter style and good acid. Really a pleasure with food.

Lighter bodied style. Needs a good 60 minute decant to really show well. Fragrant, lighter and crisper with less fruit and more acid than typical 2006 Côte Rôtie but great with food. I would have this with a chicken, pork or creamed veal rather than a steak or beef stew as it will match better. Drink now or 3 years.

Beautifully balanced -- earthy and peppery, salty and sour fruited, soy sauce and acid lift, yin and yang. If someone wanted to know a really good example of what red wine should taste like, this would be a great candidate.
Ethereal, burgundian, lovely. Is it the greatest Cote-Rotie I've ever had? Nope. Is it made in the weightless (& 12.5%), authentic, terroir driven style that modern tastes and hipsters crave (and buy a bunch of less good stuff from my cellar for $300/bt)? Absolutely.
Do yourself a favour and go buy some Jasmin. The '10 and '16 vintage conditions should have suited his style nicely.

Sr. Res. dinner at CK. Very well liked and should have been. A nice intro to NRhone Syrah and Cote-Rotie. Pretty fruit, a whiff of funk, good acidity, neither too big nor too light. Drinking well but may improve.

Continues to impress. A seamless wine that is at once buoyant and decadent. Fruity, spicy, floral, with juicy acidity and a little meatiness to boot. This was good on the young side, it is good now, and I see little reason to think it won't continue to be good when it reaches its twentieth birthday in eight more years. Whether I can keep from exhausting my supply of remaining bottles that long is another question.

Oops, last bottle. Beautiful nose with soft pepper, deep black raspberry, violets and brambles. A touch funky to start, but excellent aromatic complexity. On the palate, high toned red fruit, olive brine and great salinity. A touch acidic on the finish, which shows a hint of cool herbs and cola. Very good, but if I had to nitpick, I would say that this comes off thinner on the palate than the nose suggests. Perfect with our roast leg of lamb.
Day 2: If you have more of this, then congratulations. It is just stunning today and better than yesterday. I suspect it will be phenomenal from the get-go after another 3-5 yrs.

Pop and pour. In a great place right now. Soaring nose with loads of high toned red fruit, a hint of game and olive brine. On the palate, great acidity, and bright musty red fruit, followed by excellent salinity. Great density, but definitely more lightweight in style. Some chewy tannin on the finish, which leans a touch peppery and loads more crushed fruit.

Monthly Tasting Group: Northern Rhone (Tilia, Mpls): Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Chablis28. I agree with Chablis28 on his take. This felt youthful and a bit off kilter. Certainly it has potential and the given more cellar time, I think this will turn out to be very good. As it stands now, good, but a bit disjointed. I don't think it will ever rock your world but it should come into a better balance over a couple years. Though I would not expect this to be a long term ager.

Score based on this drinking very young yet even at almost 10yrs old and a little out of balance right now. Decanted for 2-1/2 hours then back into btl and cork removed upon arrival at Tilia Minneapolis. Sat for at least 2 hours and warming up too much before we drank it. I forgot to check the Alc which was poking through. Part of the problem, my btl was THE very last btl we touched tonight and the chill I had given it had warmed up substantially by 8:30PMish. I don't like my red at nearing 70 degrees because it can shipft the Alc out of balance. I think the wine is well made and has potential but it showed very youthfully primary tonight. I won't touch my 2nd btl for another 5 years if I can be patient. This is about 50% of this wine will be. If you have them, wait at least 3 more years to try one.

This was drinking very well tonight after 2 or 3 hours of air, displaying lots of cassis, earth and sanguine notes with a firm, flinty backbone and undertones of animale and perhaps some hints of menthol. The mouthfeel is on the softer side of rustic. This has good depth and was quite nice.
So this one was a bit nuanced. Nose reminded me of Bordeaux with that reduction and bell pepper. As it opened up it had the pepper, graphite, and hint of blueberry nose. On taste light saline notes with light roasted blueberry. Still tannic and young with a long finish. On the lighter side of Northern Rhone but nuanced and quite nice. This seems like it will age well.

So a closed nose - almost cooked. Very much roasted blueberry and not much else. As time wore on it got a bit of smoke and almost a bacon fat aroma but not quite. Fruit ok acid not that great but a long finish. Not sure what I saw when I bought this. It will get better but I am not sure it will ever be great.

Syrah Blinds (Leon, Tim, and Friends) (The Palace Steakhouse, SF): Medium garnet. The nose is predominantly fecal. A bit strong for me. Dirty diaper, clove, some acetaldehyde. Slight lambic character (lots of Brett influence). Structurally, this sees classic of Northern Rhone, maybe on the softer side. Some age, but not much. 13.5% Alcohol. Based on the rusticity of this (the dirtiness), I'm guessing this is:
2007 Cornas, ~$50 Actually: Jasmin, Cote-Rotie, 2006 no stems, lots of big neutral barrels, some viognier
He racks his wine many times, so gets a lot of exposure to air. They have a faded character. I'm not a fan. Score: 8-8.5

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Dark garnet core with maroon rim; nutty, minty, ripe, hint of VA, smooth texture, black pepper, slight funk, smoky, granite; plush texture, good acid, dark cherry, plum; really delicious, overall a slight rustic quality, very good; called '07 Cote Rotie.

Eh. Lacks the overt oak notes that have characterized recent vintage Jasmin, but one can still sense a slathering of oak in the creamy soft texture. There is a pool of dark fruit but it feels flabby and unstructured. Not impressed. A glass the next night was awful. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Dark red core with dull maroon rim, semi-translucent; plummy, berry, good tartness, some leather, violets, perfumed; mint, plums, leather, sweet cranberry along with its tartness, fresh finish; Burgundian; this bottle must not have aged much because it was a little sweet and unevolved.

Medium purple. Just a tiny bit of sweet oak and bottle funk. After a bit it blew off. Gushing red fruits, floral notes, minerals and spice. Silky mouthfeel and very nice finish. This wine ROCKS! Totally delicious. This wine is not trying to win any competitions, but has what it takes to go with food and completely satisfy the drinker. Truly an excellent Cotie Rotie. The anti- Chapoutier or Guigal... and I mean that as a complement! Great QPR. Needs a couple more years.

closed nose. As it opens up a some cranberry, cardamon, leather, light smoke. An elegant nose. Good flavors with a bit of mineral and bitterness. Smooth tannins and a nice finish. Seems a bit primary and closed to me but most northern rhones I have had are a bit more rustic - i.e. Cornas.

2006 Northern Rhone Superstars at Vin Vino Wine: Gentle nose of blood, tobacco, roasted capsicum, violets emerging with time in the glass. Sweet, ripe fruit on the palate with intense bacon and smoke. Silky, classic CR texture on a fair, feminine frame. I liked this a lot, although it did shut down a bit in the glass.

Dark red color with a touch of sediment. Meat, blackberry, iron, black pepper & dirt on nose. On palate, similar flavor profile to nose with high acidity, moderate tannins and a long finish. Very enjoyable and was great on night 2 so no rush on this. 92+

Aromas of camphor, pine needle and oak. A modern C-R with quite a lot of oak and extraction. Dry, woody finish.

2007 Cornas, ~$50
Actually: Jasmin, Cote-Rotie, 2006
no stems, lots of big neutral barrels, some viognier

Lovely mineral backbone on the palate, good grip, fresh and precise, lacking a bit of fruit. Elegant and long. 90-92

John's 70th B-Day Blowout (Sandy Springs, GA): Beautiful reddish violet showing good clarity; smoky, berry, violets, black olive, greenish, black pepper, granite; softer palate, smokiness continues, black olive, some briar on the finish; less Burgundian than ones in the past so I called Cote Brune,; delicious with the short ribs.

I'd probably put this more in the category of a nice St. Joseph than the all powerful Cote Rotie, but it's drinking great and is certainly serious wine.

Picked up on clearance for around $30. Good buy. Nice maturity, big time barnyard on opening, but resolves to warm spice led aroma, with some moderate red fruit. Tannins still evident but good with food. Solid.

Fine bottle of wine, though not as exciting as I'd been hoping for.

Wanted to try one of these and probably should have waited, will hold the rest. Beautiful nose but the falvor still needs to open up, even a bit of heat for what it says is a low alcohol wine. This will get better and needs more time.

Quite a contrast between the nose and palate. Nose is flamboyant with notes of pepper, lavendar, smoke, mocha and dark fruit. Palate is tight and dominated by the acidity which partly manifests itself in strong metallic notes.
