Colour: medium ruby red, legs are medium, no sediment Nose: Forrest fruit, leather, mushroom Mouth: Cherry, blackberries, leather, medium acidity Finish: rather short and not very complex, slightly adstringent tannins, lacks in extract density
Good, flawless everyday Bordeaux you can easily drink to food, but misses somehow in complexity, fruit is somehow lacking, there are better Bordeaux for the same money

20211015-16 Tasting 2018 Mouton Cadet vs. 2012 Dealy Lane We tasted these two wines on consecutive evenings with Bob and Jan Deal, the Mouton Cadet first and then the Dealy Lane. The consensus was the Dealy Lane was better. This is somewhat unfair since they weren’t directly head-to-head, but it was clear that everybody liked both wines, but that the DL was less big (softer) than the MC and that was perceived as positive by this crowd. The cork on the Dealy Lane had tartrate crystals on it.

20211009 Tasting 2018 Mouton Cadet vs. 2019 Thevenet & Fils Bourgogne “Le Clos” I first tried Mouton Cadet in Eindhoven in the mid-1980’s. I was on a business trip to Philips Lampen and I went out to dinner with a colleague. He suggested we order a bottle of wine. I had never ordered a bottle at a restaurant before and it felt sort of decadent. I ordered a bottle of Mouton Cadet and it cost the equivalent of $2 at the time. I was stunned that we could get a bottle that good for $2. Of course, it has gone up a little in the meantime, but it is still a great bargain at $10.99 less the 10% case discount. A true table wine. Our wine guy, Bobby recommended Thevenet & Fils Bourgogne “Le Clos” as a good comparable to try. It goes for $16.99 a bottle. We did a blind taste test… well actually it wasn’t blind at first. We did that later and it changed the answer for Trel. We tested them in unlabeled glasses initially and then I did a blind taste test for Trel. Trel’s comments: • I like them both. • The Mouton Cadet is darker. And it’s thicker. The Le Clos tastes watered down. • I’d better not drink any more if we’re going to have cocktails tonight. …to which I replied, don’t worry about it, I’ll clean your glass for you. [That’s just the kind of guy I am. I’m generous like that.] • I like the Mouton Cadet better. • On a second test after the first tests, but not a full glass later, Trel said she couldn’t tell the difference between the two wines. My thoughts: • She’s not wrong about the relative color and flavor of the two wines. • For the money, the Mouton Cadet seems to be a great choice. • I finished all the samples of both with some cheese. A fine Muenster in a plastic wrapper (hahaha). • I think I like the Mouton Cadet as well. Conclusion, we like the Mouton Cadet better. At least as far as these vintages. I went further to try to analyze the MC with the weak tools I have on hand. I have some essential oils and I tried comparing the nose of the wine to those. It was almost a bust… and I don’t have the blackberries and ??? that the maker suggested would be there, so I couldn’t really test against what they were saying. I found it had citrus, I couldn’t distinguish which one, mint, vanilla and tea notes. Definitely not clove, cinnamon or patchouli.

Pour la masse. Rien de distinctif. Est-ce même un Bordeaux ?

tastes like Merlot dominating, ripe dark plum, medium body, smooth tannins, some spices, mild oak, vanilla and chocolate notes in finish.
A modest entry level Bordeaux, balanced, no mistake as a table wine. will stay at peak in the next 1-2 years.
Ap 5/5, Ar 11/15, Palate 16/20, Overall 2+2/10

Nice classic everyday Bordeaux.
Bought on a deal of 2 bottles for £15 which is perfectly reasonable.

Medium dark red color in glass with lighter rims. Good soft fruit (lots of merlot) on palate with moderately tanninc finish.
