  • La Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (Vancouver) - Canadian Grand Conseil 2011 (The Sutton Place Hotel): Medium red in colour with slight traces of browning near the rim. At first this was slightly shy on the nose but after 15-20min in the glass it started to open up with notes of earth, animal funk, rich red cherries and hints of leather. Very animally nose. In the mouth it lacks the refinement of the Clos de Beze but has beautifully intense red pinot fruit and almost meaty flavours and finishes with a nice peppery note. This didn’t seem to possess the same depth as the CdB or the Charmes. This Mazi is showing more maturity than the CdB and is drinking very well now. While I don’t see this improving over the next few years, I also don’t see it falling apart anytime soon. Excellent.

  • Simple Series VII: B.A.G (Burg, Alsace, German) - JT's farewell (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): I actually liked this better than most on the table. Very seductive, almost sexy nose - oodles lushly perfumed flowers, rich high-toned cherries, some woody spice and bramble notes and mushroomy scents buried in a layer of funky earth - all very rich and luscious. I thought Chambolle on first sniff, then thought Charmes when told it was Gevrey - it turned out to me neither! One can possibly see why on the palate. I think there was that same sexy seductiveness here again, lovely freshness, with a silky smooth entry, and some pure cherry flavours with rather grorious clarity at the fore. However, there was some grippiness from drying tannins and a meaty undertone that pointed away from Charmes and towards Mazis. Unfortunately, the mid-palate lacked a bit of Grand Cru stuffing. However, the wine was so balanced and delicious that I could easily forgive that. Finish was mid-length, with a little of the hardness of the vintage coming through, along with darker fruit tones and wilder, more gamey meat and brambly notes. All in all, I thought this was a very nice wine, and one that we were fortunate enough to catch at or near peak.

  • Simple Series Dinner (Asia Grand, Singapore): First impression on the nose was a wild game meat character which I felt was distinctly Gevrey. Some guys thought it was a Chambolle from the floral aromas. Tannins was silky however I felt it was more like a 1er cru from the medium-level concentration. I guessed a Clos St Jacques initially. A vintage character probably. Drinking well now.

  • 2010 Simple Wine Dinner Series No.7 - JT Farewell (Asia Grand @ Odeon Tower): Alcohol : 13.5%
Tasted blind. Mature garnet red that display gorgeous aromas of l along with deep dark and red Pinot fruits with sense of wild, animal character and underbrush that is framed by utterly perfume-y background of red and blue floravery seductive and complex and I understand why the 50% guessing Chambolle (for the perfumy floral) and 50% guessing Gevrey (for the wildness). The palate is somewhat lack of the dimension and depth of the nose. Med body, again, very rich with animal and wild character, with pure texture and silky fine tannins that went seamlessly to the slight austere med finish that is slight austere and spicy, meaty flavors. Drinking very well now and have no problem to hold for another 5yrs. Buy - No.
