This wine was tasted at our Thanksgiving dinner together with the 1985 Monfortino of Giacomo Conterno Ripe, and mature red, turning to brown; the color is a little lighter than the Monfortino. Bon the nose: fine grained tannins, a bit of leather and some wood polish. The same impression continues on the palate where the tannins are coating the mouth and are seemingly a bit overwhelming to the rest. When we drank it with the Goose, bread dumplings and savoy cabbage it markedly improved and came together, complimenting the food to perfection.
What started as a vegetal nose of cucumber and herbs quickly evolved into a wonderful display of crushed strawberry, brown spice, earth and dried roses. On the palate, I found soft textures with a rich display of spicy crushed cherry, which was pumped up by a pulse of vibrant acidity and mineral thrust. It finished on dried red berry, which coated the palate and slowly faded to minerals and earth.

A great and still very youthful Rocche. Still has pretty red cherry fruit to go along with roses and earth. Smooth but still has real structure. Great now and I think will be even better with more time.

Popped and poured. Gorgeous. Soaring nose of tar, dark fruit, and dried roses. Great serralunga power. In the mouth, great balance between acidity and tannins, with a long long finish. Distinctly younger than the 85 falletto riserva i had a few months ago.

Barolo in St Helena (St Helena, CA): Stinky, skunky, sulfurous upon pouring, clearing with time but remaining a little mute. Tart in the mouth, with delicate flavors of iron, tart red berries, meat. This really took some time to open up, but by the end of the tasting this was killer with licorice, tart red fruits, balsamico, and lots of iron. My and the group's 1/3 for the flight.

A bit reserved at first, but a very classy drink that needs some air.

BYO Dinner at Tribeca Grill (Organized by Acker Merrall): Oh boy! This was stunning stuff! A nose redolent of rose petals and strawberries. Balance and length; integrated tannins. Just pure liquid enjoyment. 95+
