Armand Rousseau Chambertin Dinner (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Shockingly good Village level wine, that comes across as beautifully and unmistakably "Gevrey" with its black fruit and roasted meat. Very good balance here, clearly from a ripe vintage, but so fresh for its age (I'd have thought 2002 or 2005). OK just medium density, but that's still great for Village level wine at this age.

Tasted 1999. This has absolutely stood the test of time. Beautiful and intense cocoa and coffee aromas with a hint of leather. Then exploded on the palate with peppery strawberries mixed with chocolate and mint. Wow!

Lunch at Ashino. Ex domaine. This was a lovely matured village. Pale red and very clear. Lovely nose of pomegranate, grapefruit, cherries, smoke, mineral and boiled beef. A tap simplistic on the palate, but there was a really good balance of red fruit and acid. With extended time, there were more secondary characteristics - sandalwood, incense, coffee powder and black tea. In a prime drinking window, this will not improve further but no signs of dropping off the cliff anytime soon.

Pale red & cloudy, upon opening a very sous bois nose with little Pinot red fruits, blew away in the glass, red cherries, lovely on the palate, fully mature and doubt this will improve, drank together with a 2012 which was young, oaky but a lot more fruits, it was quite a contrast one past its peak and one too young 90

Pretty sumptuous for a villages. Purple, some bricking and a little cloudy. Black fruit, bit if vegetable on the nose. Lovely purity with Burgundian febrility in the mouth, good length, sour cherry lick to finish. Spoiling ourselves on a Wednesday evening.

Pre-holiday afternoon with friends...mostly with Burgundy (Northbrook, IL): An incredibly impressive Villages level wine at this stage in its evolution. Lots of black cherry and blackberry aromas with meaty spice aromas that is clearly Gevrey in character. Big fruit as well on palate with just the most faint hint of earthy evolution. Upfront with great power for its level. Even better with smoked venison than on its own. If served blind, I would have easily thought this 1er. No hurry to drink up.

NobleRottersSydney - Eighty Bucks Plus (Alio's, Surry Hills): [13%, cork] {Graeme} Garnet red. An aged but quite restrained nose of meat and delicatessen aromas. Some sweetness is apparent later as it sits in the glass. It’s a pleasant nose but not outstanding. The palate yields gentle, aging red berry fruits – a bit soft and nicely blurry, with fairly soft dusty tannin. Medium-bodied wine, not hugely generous. Medium-length finish; it’s very competent, but not so exciting. I guess you pay for the Rouseau name, but then this is village wine, not cru. Still, I was expecting something a little more dynamic. Unlikely to improve, but ought to hold another 5 years at least.

The Wines of Gevrey-Chambertin (Brooks Hotel, Dublin): A similar colour to the first wine, perhaps slightly darker. More concentration on the nose however: a good weight of maturing fruits and also a sous-bois element. Elegant palate, but with quite some concentration. Quite tannic too: I thought perhaps this was a 1998 until it was revealed as a 1999. A dry, minerally finish; also some tannin. Very good: I prefer this to the first wine (as do most others).

Wonder if this bottle was a bit buggered as whilst not obviously flawed it had a hint of over-ripe camembert or artificial truffle which rather spoiled the effect

Medium ruby, slight brown rim. Red fruits, earthy and perfumed on the nose. Red fruits tastes. Straightforward, easy drinking, not very complex. Light/medium body. Acidic, very soft tannins.

Ruby red. Dense sweet red fruit and earthy beetroot aromas. Compact medium body with refreshing acidity and smooth tannins. Intense crushed raspberry and sour cherries on the palate. Rich, long and mouthfilling. Develops interesting secondary gamey flavours with time in the glass. Lovely

oh wow. this one is actually getting better, and is showing a lot nicer than it showed in October. Lovely Rousseau aromas, though on the light side, with slick acidity and solid balance. Nothing earth shattering, but really really enjoyable and well made. wish i had more! Will hold nicely for a few years.

Ruby red with very appealing and somewhat intense aromas of sour wild fruits, cherries and a touch of marzipan. Medium body, with very slick balance, including integrated and pretty soft tannins, perfect oak and lovely expressive and fresh acidity. Tasty flavors of cherries and wild fruits with some spices in the background. Big finish. Overall a wine that is easy to enjoy, refreshing, tasty and well structured. My first Armand Rousseau, which leaves me with great expectations for the future.

Totally oxidized! The cork popped out of the bottle like nothing. I wonder why the bottle did not leak in the cellar!?! What a shame!
