A nose of turkish delight, prunes, pine and truffles. Mouth of black cherry, milk chocolate, mud and coffee. Medium length finish of blackberry jam. Still has a lot of life.

A 10 year old wine, which is still showing great youth. Deep purple in colour all the way to the rim. The nose shows ripe red fruit, plum and a little white pepper. The palate was a little flat - still plenty of fruit character, a little spice, but not much else. Not sure if age would improve this or not!

Medium (on the light side). Ink red / purple with strong aromas upon opening, but abating somewhat in the glass. 5 second finish, not overly complex. Reminds me of Merlot. Fruity and "sweet" with a tiny hint of vegetative matter. Overall very pleasant but not overly complex or full. Not very tannic.

Penfolds Tasting with the Wine Society (Old Trafford): Slightly lighter colour, but still remarkably dark - ripeness of fruit, I suppose. Very very young purple at rim. Lovely nose, spicy and Rhone-like with lots of stewed red fruit and plums. Very forward nose. Good attack, but then rather uni-dimensional, somewhat lacking depth. Powerful, but fairly soft tannins on finish. Seems much younger than it is. Needs more age.

Just to be clear, this was a Shiraz Grenache Mourvèdre. An excellent drop, earthy, spicy, spice and excellent finish. A real find.
