A more backwards bottle than one from a different source. A great wine that just needs time to come around and/or lots of air. Meaty and masculine but still fresh. Wish I had more to age.

Palate is incredible with red fruit and is full body. Nose is opened up a bit after 2 hours of opening. A lot of spices and some soy sauce note. It needs perhaps another 10 years in cellar.

The last bottle of this wine from my cellar sadly, this was opened several hours before serving. The colour was a bright cherry colour with a lifted and complex nose of dark cherries, blackberries, wild strawberry with hints of Asian spices, damp earth and limestone. The palate showed an array of dark fruits with some dark chocolate and spice leading into a gamy/earthy finish that was all the clearer for following a bottle of Vosne Romanee. This is a very good 1er Cru that remains vigorous and richly fruited.

Not the best nor the most disappointing bottle of this wine. It didn't have much of a chance to open as it was a substitute for the disappointing (at the time) Brovia. Well fruited and complex with soil and gamy notes. The structure seemed to come to the fore pretty quickly so I'm not sure what to do with my last bottle. Maybe if you give it more time to open up it will show better, but it was still pretty darn good.

Another terrific bottle of this wine was opened and aired for 3 hours before pouring. The colour was a bright cherry colour with a nose of dark cherries, blackberries, wild strawberry with hints of Asian spices, damp earth and limestone. The palate is again an array of dark fruits with some dark chocolate and spice leading into an earthy finish that is both delicate and long. The fruit beautifully coats the structure and provides both depth and colour. A delicious wine all round !

Dinner with the wine group (Hillside Supper Club): Intense nose with black burly fruit, good aromatics; palate is medium bodied, youthful prominent tannins especially through the midpalate, high acidity, black fruit; medium finish. Lovely balanced wine with the density and character of NSG. Nice wine, still young. 90-91

Really good and maybe I would have enjoyed it more by itself on another night. Like the Chave and Allemand, not the best bottle I've had of this. Paired with the Vaucrains it was easier and more enjoyable, but wasn't the kaleidoscopically complex wine it has been. The fruit was a bit stunted as well.

This beautiful bottle of Chevillon NSG is just coming to maturity with a persistent clear and dark cherry colour. The nose is a compote of dark cherries, blackberries, wild strawberry with hints of damp earth and limestone. The palate is a rich array of dark fruits with some dark chocolate leading into a mineral earthy finish that is both delicate and long. This is a beautiful example of one of the best 1er Crus in the best of hands.

Popped and poured. The nose is just starting to pick up some sous bois notes to complement the red cherry and spices. Silky and pliant palate, shows young but accessible with a deep flavor profile combining fruit and earth and a lovely texture. In a great spot and should hold/improve for some time to come.

Vertical Tasting of Chevillon and Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 2015-1990 (San Francisco): 90% deep ruby with minimal lightening at the rim. Just a perfect Nuits blend of ripe red fruit and earth on the nose complemented by a twist of blood orange. Wow, the balance here is superb! Perfectly round, understated fruit, superb acidity and soil, great enveloping mouth feel and coverage. This just got better and better, and the finish lingered almost a full minute. Outstanding now, room to improve and show more mature notes if given another decade in bottle. An absolute heart throb, and to me, the most complete, seamless wine of the day even if it isn't entirely resolved.

Wineberserkers dinner with Herwig (Heirloom cafe): Interesting nose but slightly closed, some slight Brett, dense red fruit; palate is medium bodied, rustic tannins, red fruit, dense character, medium acid; medium finish. Very nice, a denser and rustic style than the Leroy, though could use even more time... possibly 5-10 years or more. 90-91

Regal. Another excellent showing slowly meandering on its trail. Purity, depth of fruit, mouthfeel it is all there. The kinship with the 1991 is remarkable and what makes Burgundy so captivating. While this is delicious now, it isn’t going anywhere soon. The last bottle from my cellar I opened with FlaJim almost 6 years ago, that seems like a reasonable clip for the remaining bottles.

Took a good hour for the barnyard nose to blow off. But I knew there was a nice wine underneath. Crimson colored, medium body with slight blackberry hidden in the nose. Quite balanced, with a medium long finish. Best to let it evolve for 1-2 hours.

A very strong robust wine full of iron, earth, granite like minerals and savoury nuances. Shows a touch of red berry sweetness to contrast and is a beautifully made and balanced wine. The robustness is in no way "rustic" and there are some fine tannins in this classy 1er cru. No signs of slowing down either a great example of what Nuit Saint Georges is all about. Highly recommend.

Served with the 99 Pruliers and Vaucrains. More structured and stony than the Vaucrains, with a more reserved feel to it. Darker fruited, and more earth driven than the other two wines. Youthful and brooding, but growing in the glass. You can tell this is privileged dirt. There is a sense of poise in this wine, and it has layers to give, but is not necessarily better than the Vaucrains, which was just killing it tonight. It is layered and more on the earth-mineral side than the Vaucrains, and I suspect is going to become a great bottle. A fantastic bottle of wine for me, with tremendous class. All of these have a long great future, Loved it. 94 pts

Third Thursday Does More Red Burgundy (Willamette Wine Storage, Portland OR): The aromas on this wine are dark, showing leather along with earth and smoke. Fruit scents remind me of very ripe and dark plums. It's dense and complex on the palate. I got flavors of leather and cherries, and something like red earth. The acidity lingers well on the finish. There was too much conversation while I was tasting this for me to decide on a score.

Wow, massive nose, very large fruit, huge spice. Intense. Similarly large palate, though very nice and graceful, despite the nearly candied nature of the fruit. Really tannic and grippy as it stays on the palate; this is way too young at current. This is the most tannic wine of the night. Spicy, and slightly alcoholic on the palate, with really tart, ripe fruit holding strong. The finish shows spice, big fruit, and bigger alcohol, but really impressive fruit and balance despite the heat. I'd wait at least a decade before poping one of these.

Initially had a reticent nose that opened up within 30 minutes to express pure clean red pinot fruit with some barnyard notes. Over the course of next 2 hours, this really blossomed into a wonderful wine. While still young with noticeable tannins this was very enjoyable and I have no doubt this will be even more stellar in 5-10 years.

Chevillon Dinner, 1990-2002 (Lupa Restaurant, San Francisco): Very much in the '99 style-firm if not hard, large scaled, and way too young now. Although the two '99s were not tasted side by side, this is almost certainly a step up in concentration from the Perrieres, but tonight, the "lesser" vineyard was showing more complexity.

Two days later from memory. Just a terrific NSG, fleshy, fruity, very punchy and vibrant. Beautifully round. In perfect shape, maybe a year or two before it really hits its stride. Every mouthful a pleasure.
