  • Left bank but clearly with higher merlot content. Nose has hint of smoke, leather and black tea. Palate is rounded, smooth but not a lot of fruits. Minimal tannins. Short finish. Enjoyable.

  • Very pretty with aromas of violets, mineral, sweet earth and cedar. As you work a bit of air into the wine it shows some green bean and tobacco leaf aromas. It is silky and vinous in the mouth with no hard edges but fantastic energy and vitality. Drinking perfectly now but in no danger of decline in the near future.

  • Tuscany Tasting: To mark the election of the new Pope. Some raisin, smooth and rounded, some depth, earthy, tannins all gone. The fruit is, however, a bid ‘dead’. On its way down. Only a minority was in Bordeaux.

  • Smoke, truffle, earth, tobacco, tar, cedar and cassis notes make up the mature aromatics. Four square in texture, the wine finishes with short, earthy, spice and cherry tones.

  • Wines on Thursday (Bellavitae): A low-fill bottle, so I wasn't expecting much, but it managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat and even though it had problems, the problems had nothing to do with the low fill. On uncorking, it's the identical twin of the '61 with its intense cigar tobacco bouquet. As it sits in the decanter the scent transforms into an unusual and unappetizing dead ringer for Flintstones vitamins, complete with the sugary sweetness and synthetic scratch-and-sniff type fruit. This, too, passes, but the wine pours very cloudy and feels correspondingly muddled. The acidity is spiky at first and the material is actually bigger and sweeter than the '61, a nice reminder that the difference between the great and the good is a matter of composition, not of size. It has a similar smokiness so some of the material is the same, it's just not put together nearly as well.
