This was my last bottle of four, and although it became fairly complex as it opened up over a couple of hours, it was opened along with a bottle of Bartolo Mascarello from the same year, and this was light and faded in comparison. The tannins are long gone and the acidity falls a little short - time to drink up. This was a good value at $65 a dozen years ago; it's not a good value at current prices.

This wine continues to drink well and this is my last bottle. Notes of cherry, damp earth, spice - nicely balanced with good mouthfeel and long finish. Tannins are soft and well integrated.

Monprivato dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): No. 10294. Drinks in the same vein as the 2007 -- a ripe vintage made in a restrained style. The nose shows plenty of red fruit, but there are more candied elements on the palate than the 2007. Interestingly, no roasted or raisinated notes, but at the same time, this doesn't have the same complexity as most other wines tonight.

Wow this barolo is drinking well now. So much fruit and freshness to it. Lovely rose petal, cherry with a little herb on the nose. On the palate it is dart cherries with a little Tabacco. Loved this wine tonight

2003 was historically hot & dry. Did Monprivato succeed despite these conditions?
DAY 1 Served the wine with the Vinloq System which allows nitrogen to be pulled into the bottle with pouring 👀Brown/orange mixed with red 👃Cherries, tobacco, tar & roses. Some stewed/dried fruit 👅Mature. Florals and fruit are present. Light. Could use more acid. Easy to drink. Balanced
Remaining wine Slow Decanted with Vinloq and refrigeration
DAY 10 Nice aged notes. Savory. Okay precision. Tannins are good. Kept improving in the glass
DAY 17 👃Classic & beautiful with aged notes. Finally what I was hoping for 👅Drinking well. Cherry. Significant tar. Savory
Similar on the 3 days, but the nose was most beautiful on DAY 17
The pedigree was apparent here in this lovely barolo despite the vintage conditions. Balance was retained with enough precision to allow the Mascarello Monprivato personality to come through👏

We let it open in the bottle for about an hour before we consumed it. We found it very pleasant, light palate weight. Unfortunately not very complex and interesting. The flavors seemed almost primary. Overall a drink now.

Medium garnet color. Nose of roses, tobacco leaf, stewed cherries, and mineral notes. Medium bodied on the palate with good presence and length and softened tannins. Probably time to drink up.

Nose of dark candied cherry, subtle rose, subtle spice, a bit of wood/vanilla. Medium acdidity. Creamy, full textured. Front notes of sweet ripe cherry and vanilla, with backdrop of stewed cherries, caramel and vanilla (that recalled a bit of aged nice rioja). Velvety, bittersweet tannins with spiced vanilla on a medium+ finish. Versus other CT notes, this wine was a bit heavier in dark ripe fruit, caramel and vanilla than expected. I Overall a bit too much on the sweet, rich and caramel side for me, but still balanced and a good wine. 92-93.

"Southern Rhone" Offline (Mystic Room, SF): Double decant, small amount of fine-moderate sediment. Brief initial impressions: Pale ruby with significant bricking at edges; nose is aromatic, rose mulch, strawberry liqueur; palate is light bodied, youthful but integrating tannins, again strawberry liqueur, rose petals persist through the midpalate; finish is medium-plus length. A very good Barolo with excellent persistence and length. I do think it shows the warm character of the vintage, but it retains a lightness and elegance that still keeps it interesting and fits the Mascarello Monprivato style. 91 12 hours double decant: moderately aromatic, beautiful elegant roses; palate is medium bodied, still has a roasted red pepper and red fruit component, medium-plus acidity; medium finish. Balanced, elegant style, nice. May still need some age, but unclear how it will develop. Pricey for its quality in the market today. 90 Day 2: Overall a bit flatter, less vibrant than it was yesterday.

The nose was dark with earth and minerals up front, followed by crushed blackberry, cherry and spicy florals. On the palate, I found silky textures with ripe cherry, violets, brisk acidity and hints of grippy tannin in an unexpectedly balanced and highly enjoyable performance. The finish was medium-long with lingering dark fruits and hints of gruff tannin. This was a beautifully balanced wine for the vintage.

Unlike my last bottle which I now think is flawed, this is very elegant right off the bat (pop and pour). Bright minerally red cherries, totally seamless.

Light red, nose of flowers, primary red fruits and spice, a touch of alcohol. Medium body, a bit of heat from the alcohol, not much tannins. This distinctly tastes of a hotter vintage than my previous bottle a few years ago, perhaps it had more fruit then. Very nice lengthy finish, the calibre of the vineyard still shows despite the hot vintage.

Love this wine. At a really interesting point in its life: still quite young and fruit forward, yet completely approachable and wonderful. Years from now it may develop those classic secondary Barolo flavors, but it's so delicious now that who wants to wait? Terrific structure and balance. In the best of all possible worlds one would have a couple of cases of this to drink at various intervals...

Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): Really in a wonderful spot just now. The more 2003s (and 2005s) I have from this region (and Tuscany, too), vintages there were largely maligned and/or panned, the more I have to laugh, at myself, for believing the Pundits; for believing generalizations. Great producers will find a way to make the best wine they can, which means a lot more than it might sound like - and if they can't make the wine they want, they'll sell the grapes, simple as that. Nebbiolo, a delicate grape to be sure, can really withstand a lot, and through it all, show you beauty you never expected. I think this wine is just such an example. That said, no doubt many clever decisions and hard work went into producing such a deeply pleasing wine. Drink now with modest decant, or over the next 5-7 years. recommended+
massively tannic. but underneath is lovely fruit, tar, rose petal. Gorgeous nose that's overwhelmed by tannins. would probably need years more to resolve. Weak vintage but also more affordable so not bad to hold a couple

A long Sunday lunch on the Langhe: A gorgeous wine served blind by Jeffrey. An attractive, savoury nose of dried mushroom, truffle, tobacco and red fruit, again suggesting a little evolution. On palate, seamless, smooth, succulent fruit, merging with savoury, umami elements. Well balanced. Some saw some fruit sweetness here not typical of a Barolo and wondered if the wine might be a pinot noir. I thought that this was a traditionally made Barolo, perhaps from 1998. A lovely wine with all of the elements in place ... On the reveal, 2003 was a surprise ... Jeffrey said "2003 is the email you didn't respond to ...". An excellent Monprivato.

Notes after following for 6 hours open. The transparent ruby color is almost rose' in opacity. No noticeable bricking. Shy and reserved bouquet leading with roses and potpourri, accented with a bit of cinnamon tea, raspberry, and earth. Palate is weakening on the front end and it takes some major swishing to get the fruit to come out. Freshness is still there in the acidity department but I think the tannins are pretty much giving up, too. Compared to the bottle I had 8 months ago, I wouldn't expect improvement from here on out. 5+10+14+6= 85

This is such a beautiful, ethereal Barolo. Classic Monprivato. Color is translucent ruby. Nose of wet tea leaves, roses, citrus peel and camphor. Palate is mid/full body, very balanced with delineated tannins and lots of fruit. Finish is long -- 30-45 seconds. This can go for a lot longer, but is into the drinking window now. Really nice.

Dark cherries and plums with notes of warm spices, dark chocolate, and forest floor. The tannins were soft and body round and supple, but never heavy. The darker notes and less lifted aromatics really show the heat of the vintage.

Camphor and lemon peel on the nose. On the palate, light cherry, roses, truffle, and a hint of citrus on the medium to long finish, with no noticeable tannins. This is much better than a bottle from about a year ago. It's complex, elegant, and beautifully balanced and integrated. In spite of that, the disappearance of the tannins that were here a few years ago suggests that this may be as good as it gets -- it might evolve, but it might start to fall apart instead. I will drink my remaining bottles over the next two or three years.

My expectations were tempered by the notoriously warm vintage of 2003 and the reputation that precedes it. Cantina G. Mascarello did a fine job with this offering, in light of the challenges.
Early bricking at this relatively tender age. Deep aromas of red fruit. Supple in the mouth with ample complexity. Predominant notes of deep cherry with a touch of orange peel and earthy elements. Drinking much more forward and advanced compared to the 1997 Monprivato I opened recently, yet a very enjoyable wine.

Feminine, floral with a delicate pocket of cherries and soft red fruit. Some very nice hints of charcoal and earth. Very slight heat near finish. Barbaresco-like. Drinking far better than expected, a pleasure right now.

Light color. Wonderful nose of raspberry, strawberry, licorice, earth, violets, rose petals and just a touch of too much alcohol that shows when tasted without food. Elegant, ripe tannins, fresh acidity and fruit in a good balance. Long lingering taste but perhaps again with a bit too much warmth at the end. Overall though, this is a real treat! Drinking perfectly now. If the average score on this one is just around 90-91 I can't wait to get to the other vintages... (93-94p)

Really good showing. I'd be hard pressed to describe any evidence of a super hot vintage in this wine. The fruit is wonderfully pure, no signs of over-ripeness to my palate, no excessive alcohol. Decanted for about an hour, this showed a good palate of red and dark fruits, silky mouthfeel, soft on the sides, drinking very well now. At Rothmann's with Sarah and Jonathan.

Brilliant clarity with a brick shade. Subtle earth and aromatic nose with an admirable amount of alcohol. Bright fruit with powerful acidic mouthfeel and fresh lingering citris back end. Brilliant mix of a ripe vintage with traditional barolo wine making. A hybrid of the highest degree. Not sure if this can be more enjoyable than it is now. Looking forward to finding out.

Roses and menthol on the nose; roses, cherry, and orange peel on the palate, with light tannins. Just a touch of pruniness comes through on the finish after an hour in the decanter. I think a bottle of this I had a couple of years ago was a bit better.

bit obvious for a monprivato; none of the ethereal notes that i normally associate with this wine. certainly not a bad drink, perhaps the best of any 2003 barolo i tasted; but the wine is no doubt marked by this super hot vintage.

Classic bricky colour, and that 'tar & roses' nose, though a bit more 'confit' from the vintage, especially with air. Lovely perfume - quite Burgundian/pinot and none of that excess 03 heat to it. Very good...

I think Ken's note below is very accurate. Upon uncorking, I smelled a good amount of cedar (Ken's balsam?), and after a few minutes a distinct and intriguing note of onion powder among other dried spices. What I did not smell, thankfully, was alcohol, which, given the vinatage, is the obvious concern. In fact, this showed no evidence of the superhot vintage, neither on the nose nor the palate. The palate is lithe, light on its feet, with red fruit notes from strawberry to cherry, increasingly darkening as the wine airs. The texture is silky, although the tannins do thicken up over air time. The onion powder note remains constant. Very enjoyable wine. No degradation overnight, remained beautiful. Bottle # 7750. Bottle 1 of 3.

Quite translucent with onion skin edge. Very appealing nose of balsam, licorice, and bark mulch. Smooth, fairly thick and silky up front. Rough tannins on the finish. Long, tannic finish on first opening. Delicious cherry compote in the mid-palate. Perfume growing as it has been open 3 hours. Thickening in the mouth. Great character, esp. for the vintage. Terrific match with my Bolognese sauce. Long sour cherry finish now.

Cola fizz, vanilla, basil, earth, sandlewood, citrus notes and an alcohol burn. Beutiful clarity lightening at the edges. Dense and mouth coating. A little acidic and only slightly hot. Sour Cherry with cinamon and dry lingering tannin. Give this a little while longer but is good to drink now if you so choose. Not a blockbuster, but enjoyable.

Consumed after an epic Roberto Conterno, popped, flash decanted, surprisingly open, ripe & rich, perhaps not a typical Monprivato, but drinking well now . . .

Hardly noticeable nose and weak and diluted on the palete. The fruit is on the red spectrum and there is some nuances of stone and minerals, but the finish is acidic, short, and generally quaffable but not a good wine. Perhaps as a lot of others have experienced batches of this wine is rather flawed.

I found it very light for a nebiolo grape. Very, very Light colour. When opened, the cork almost had no colour. Looked like a burgundy wine. Nose with some oak and spices. Not very fruity nor anything special. Low/medium body, fresh and ok acidity. not very barolo like. I mean, theres lot less tannins here than in an usual regular barolo. People say barolo is the wine of the kings and the king of wines. Not this one, at least in that vintage.(2003 is known as a regular vintage at Piedmont) Hard wine to judge, because its not a bad wine at all, but, at the same time, theres nothing special in here. I have never had giusepe Mascarello Barolo MOnprivato and i admit that i expected more. I ll give it another chance in a couple of years with another vintage.

On opening the cork has green organic growth on the inside. In the glass the wine was filled with little white/green pieces of mould/sediment. On the nose it seemed slightly oxidised. I did not taste it. I did not want to.

Pop and pour but improved markedly over 4 hours + in decanter - obviously a rich vintage but wears it elegantly and without overt signs of heat or excessive alcohol - a real crowd-pleaser if atypical Monprivato. In a word; seductive.

Very nice! Pale orange- red in the glass. Cherry liquor on the nose. Oak and spice build on the palate with sweet cherry fruit on the back end. A hint of orange zest on the finish. Decent acid, not much tannin. Smooth and enjoyable. Will probably get better with age, but plenty nice to drink now.

Popped and poured. Light translucent reddish-burgundy in color. Palate of earthyness, forest mushrooms and red fruit. No creosote or road tar flavors common to Barolo. This is from the VERY hot 2003 vintage and my guess is that the grapes are riper than average. The acidity seems a bit lower than customary in a Barolo and the tanins are no where near fierce. There is an apparent fruity sweetness on the back of the palate, which may represent the tanins doing what they are supposed to do as they breat up. The wine is very approachable now for a Barolo that is just past 8 years old. I do not know how this will age and I believe it has yet to reach its peak, but it is quite pleasant right now.

Medium ruby color with a clear rim. Not overly aromatic but a pretty nose of floral aromas, cherries and a touch of baking spice. Pure cherry flavors on the palate with maybe some other sweet red fruit notes. Medium+ tannins but the acidity seemed a bit low for me, probably a result of the hot vintage. The wine wasn't flabby but it just didn't have that zippy, mouth watering acidity I crave from barolos. There was also the slightest bit of heat coming through on the back end as well. Smooth mouthfeel and enjoyable finish though. I enjoyed the wine but would not rebuy, even at the discounted sale price I paid.

From memory. Clear deep garnet with an orange rim. Nose of flowery ripe cherries and alcohol. The palate is sweet and a little hot, not entirely untypical nebbiolo flavors but very fruity and primary. The finish is medium-deep and less sweet. I will treat the remaining bottles as if they need more time. Two days later a bit less aggressive, but still not much like I like Barolo.

There were a lot of green organic-looking spots on the bottom of the cork, they weren't crystals and there was no mold on the top of the cork. Tasted overtly flawed, with tastes of corroded metal and a bit alkaline on the finish.

My notes say I haven't had this wine in 2 years, which surprises me, but 2 additional years in the bottle have really aided this little gem. When my wife says "now that's the kind of wine I like to drink" that was a good endorsement and merited this note. The wine is maturing very gracefully, the chewiness of the tannins from this vintage have dissipated and the wine is in quite a fine place. Light colored, as to be expected. Pretty nose of roses, a little chalk, a hint of strawberry -- not showing the full spectrum of Monprivato/Mascarello scents as a more complete vintage, but still unmistakeable. On the palate rich and well structured, again for the vintage, with good body and persistence. Wine has entered a prime drinking window where I would expect it to remain for quite some time. I was very picky in 2003, and think it is about time to do a status check on Cascina Francia. I know from recent tastes that Roagna really nailed this much maligned vintage as well...

Not sure it was entirely typical, but my God this was good! Took me about 5 attempts to actually take a mouthful because every time I raised the glass, I was overwhelmed by the most powerful, beautiful perfume I've ever come across.
Perversely, it wasn't a wine to analyse and dissect, just one in which to glory and enjoy. My note therefore will record nothing but nose and greatness.

Not terribly expressive. The nose reminded me of the smell of the outdoors just following some rain - a little wet soil and fresh cut flowers. The palate, also not showing much, had good acidity for the vintage, with strawberries and tea, and tannins that coated my teeth on the finish.

My first bottle was an acidic mess - this one was much better. I liked it out of the bottle...very serious but light and delicate at the same time, with sweet tannins that were beginning to fade away. After a few hours it started to fall apart. Not sure if this is an off vintage, but this is way below expectations.

From Memory, brought this into Crush Wine bar in Toronto God...I loved this....completly integrated, gorgeous floral, tar, cinnamon, tea, sour cherries. spectacular! I was talking to a sommalier friend of mine who said that the Monprivato does really well in hot vintages as it is situated on predominantly clay which retains moisture so well... I have to agree, nothing hot or stewed here.

Wonderful nose of dusty cherries mixed with tar and tobacco. The palate is very enjoyable with bitter earthy tones mixed with sour cherry. This wine had a very carmenere like aspect to it especially on the finish. Overall a nice wine to consume now but I feel there is a lot more ahead.

Not a whole lot on the nose, thin, very pale. Very acidic and tannic -- perhaps it needs time? 1997 was much better -- not sure how much to attribute to the (much better) vintage vs. maturity.

Maybe there's something I don't "get" here about Barolo, but this was once again an 85-87 point wine for my palate. Ruby red translucent color, vibrant nose of sour cherry and similar fruits set me up for a let-down on the comparatively thin sensation on the palate. Light-to-medium bodied wine with no length to speak of and not a tremendous amount of complexity. It was quite enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but I would expect something like this to go for 15 dollars or less. Could not remotely stand up to the Pecorino cheese pairing.

This is my first barolo so I'll withhold the score. I feel like my experience was inconsistent with the other notes on this page. For my palate this was an 86 pointer. Straightforward pleasant nose of cherry, light-bodied attach of similar with harmless tannins. Lacking the weight I expected, and really drank more like a 15-dollar red. I have two more bottles so I guess we'll see whether this was just an off-bottle.

A very fine baby michet. Lot of typicity. Fruit is perhps plump and acid is low, but this provides a great, early insight into Mauro's genius and the special nature of his fruit. I'm going to have a lot of fun watching this one develop. Great QPR, and the bottle disappeared pretty quickly

Bright ruby. Popped and poured. Beautiful but slightly reticent nose of sour cherry, goudron, alcohol and dried rose petals with a touch of menthol. In the mouth, a touch of spicy and earthy sauvage notes, almost like a great burgundy. Wow is this young - majorly tannic in the mouth, but fairly far back in the palate. Tannins buffeted by bracing acidity, which keeps things in balance. Over time I am getting more strawberry notes on the nose, with a touch of earth. Very good wine, as there is the stuffing to outlast the tannins over time.

Decanted about 30 minutes before pouring. Nose has some typical tar-like character but is somewhat muted at this point. The attack is a bit tannic and sweet at the same time. It is definitely closed at moment but there's a lot of substance, although it is perhaps a bit light on acidity. At times it seemed a bit disjointed and I'm not sure how this will age but I definitely wouldn't open another for at least 4-5 years.

Time Tested
2003 was historically hot & dry. Did Monprivato succeed
despite these conditions?
DAY 1
Served the wine with the Vinloq System which allows nitrogen to be pulled into the bottle with pouring
👀Brown/orange mixed with red
👃Cherries, tobacco, tar & roses. Some stewed/dried fruit
👅Mature. Florals and fruit are present. Light. Could use more acid. Easy to drink. Balanced
Remaining wine Slow Decanted with Vinloq and refrigeration
DAY 10
Nice aged notes. Savory. Okay precision. Tannins are good. Kept improving in the glass
DAY 17
👃Classic & beautiful with aged notes. Finally what I was hoping for
👅Drinking well. Cherry. Significant tar. Savory
Similar on the 3 days, but the nose was most beautiful on DAY 17
The pedigree was apparent here in this lovely barolo despite the vintage conditions. Balance was retained with enough precision to allow the Mascarello Monprivato personality to come through👏

12 hours double decant: moderately aromatic, beautiful elegant roses; palate is medium bodied, still has a roasted red pepper and red fruit component, medium-plus acidity; medium finish. Balanced, elegant style, nice. May still need some age, but unclear how it will develop. Pricey for its quality in the market today. 90
Day 2: Overall a bit flatter, less vibrant than it was yesterday.

Elegant, ripe tannins, fresh acidity and fruit in a good balance. Long lingering taste but perhaps again with a bit too much warmth at the end. Overall though, this is a real treat! Not this one, at least in that vintage.(2003 is known as a regular vintage at Piedmont)
Hard wine to judge, because its not a bad wine at all, but, at the same time, theres nothing special in here.
I have never had giusepe Mascarello Barolo MOnprivato and i admit that i expected more. I ll give it another chance in a couple of years with another vintage.

Decanted 2 hrs. Expressive dark fruit, damp earth with prominent tannins, long finish. An excellent Barolo.

Hauntingly good. Super complex nose. Still young, I suspect this will grow into one of the greatest barolo produced in 2003

Animal, leather cigar box and cherry. Sweet core of cherry fine grained ripe tannin, fresh acid, no green tannin problems here.
